Blessings in disguise

Hi Everyone,

皆さんはフィリップ先生のコメントを読みましたか？見ていない方は一つ前のエントリのコメントの最後の方をご覧ください。

He was very pleased that you were all so interested in him, but he didn’t have time to reply to every question. I was planning to write out the interview for you, but I’m afraid I don’t have time to do it today. Actually, I think you all managed to get most of what he said, so well done and thanks to all the advanced people for all your help.

I am really happy to see that we are getting comments from new bloggers all the time – welcome to you all! I hope you will help us to make this community even bigger and even better. (By the way, I was amazed by Kiko’s progress. You must all be very good teachers!)

We are going to have another guest speaker next week (not my mother), but before that, I want to tell you about an interesting difference between Japanese and English that I noticed this week…

火曜日の授業に、学生さんがこのような例文を作りました。

When my dog got angry, he bites people.

この文は過去形と現在形を混ぜているので、一回だけの過去の話、それともこの犬の性格についての話か分かりませんでした。本人に聞いたら、この面白い現象に気づいた…

In Japanese, you sometimes use the past tense (過去形) to talk about future time, or to talk about ‘if X happens, then Y happens’ . In English, if we are talking about this kind of situation we use the present tense, so my student’s sentence should have been ‘When my dog gets angry, he bites people.’ (You could also say ‘if my dog …)

Someone recently showed me a fantastic speech made by Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple to a group of graduating university students. You can read it here. It is quite high level, but if you find any bits you can’t understand, write them on the blog and I’m sure someone will help you.

In this speech, Steve Jobs talks about when bad things happen to you or things don’t go the way you had hoped, but then later you realize that this actually had a good effect on your life.

I have had this experience many times. For example, when I was in the police, I applied for a job as a teacher in Japan. At the time, I had never studied teaching, but I was still very disappointed when I didn’t get the job. Because of that, however, I went to London to train as a teacher, and then worked in Singapore, where I learnt so much about language, culture, and teaching. Looking back now, I’m really glad I didn’t get the job at that time. Do you have any stories about disappointments that turned out for the best?

Steve Jobs also talks about ‘connecting the dots’ (this comes from those pictures you do as a child where you have to draw lines between the dots to make a picture), and he says that you can only connect the dots in your life when you look back on them.

I always tell students the same thing. I think many young people in life worry that they have to find 自分の道, but they don’t realize that they are making their own 「道」 every day of their lives. Imagine that you are in the center of a jungle, and you have to make a path through it to get out. There is no path for you to use, but if you start cutting trees and plants, you will make begin to make one. When you look behind you, you will be able to see 自分の道, but you can’t see it in front of you because it doesn’t exist yet.

It took a long time for me to realize that, and I wish someone had told me when I was younger. I always believed that somewhere in the jungle was a path that was already made for me, and I just had to find it. When I realized that my ‘path’ was made up of the things I did and the decisions I made every day, I began to enjoy life much more and feel less stress.

Thank you for your response even you had quite a lot things to do. We could train listening to English thanks to you. I was a little dissapointed because you didn't have the time for ansewring our questions. But I understand it well!! I(we) will happy if you sometimes watch this blog in London and write "Hello everyone" like that. I hardly understand what native speakers who are not only British, but also American(another native) say if they talk as fast as usual. So I'm making a effort to focus on listening English. I'm enjoying thinking about your travel to N.Y without your permission as if that was my plan. So I read the comment of Alex and I imagine what I would do if I would go there(lol). We, especially women, think mostly about foods when we plan out traveling. It's important to have delicious foods, right? I will tell you about the imformation of N.Y if I find something. I hope you spend a couple of sweet hours with your husband there♪

Alex, your co-workers including you seems to be very smart and exciting. What kind of jobs do you do? You don't have to tell me if you mind because that is your privacy. I guess your office is always energetic.
By the way, I've stayed 3 or 4 days in Boston. You had studied there, right? I went to many places there like Boston museum, whale wacthing, Harvard University,The John F.Kennedy Library and Museum...etc. Boston is one of the great cities, isn't it? Reading your comment is hard for me, but it's great training for learning English.

Thank you for your help! You are right, I made a mistake. 単に"Osaka" と "there" と入れ替えてしまいました。。　Thanks!
"GIST" means “主旨” or “要点” Actually, I didn't know this word, so I looked it up in the 英辞朗. Don't you use it? I think it's very useful. Because there are lots of words and idioms and example sentences. (英和、和英のどちらにもなるので便利ですよ～(＾_-)-☆）
Yes, it's very important to have delicious foods when we travel. 美味しいものを食べると「いい旅行だったね～」という感じですよね(笑） でも食べ物だけじゃなくて他の事も考えないと･･(＾＾ゞ　Thanks a lot!

Hi David and all,
How are you today?

I listened to the sound file 2 times and read a speech made by steve jobs. I mostly understood what you said, but I have no idea about my story. I will think about it and tell you later. However, it may not success story because I'm still on the path to my future from disappointment experiences.
I hardly to read the speech and got tired of reading long speech. But I understood what he wanted to say(maybe). And I'm sure this speech gave me more motivation for my future.

"Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice"

This comment moved me and I will never the above sentence.

I will read his speech again and again to understand more. Today, my brain doesn't work any more. So I will write something more this weekend.

I'm happy you understood me and I thought the mistake is like "ケアレスミス". Actually, I myself realized how to use "in" before "here or there". I forgot about it.
Thanks for your very quick help. I usually use a electronic dictionary and English-English dictionary.
My old computer work soooooo slowly to check words. But I try to use "英辞郎". It seems to be very usuful. Thanks a lot.

Hi David, Hi Everyone,

I read the speech by Steve Jobs. Whew, I wouldn’t have read this kind of stuff, if David hadn’t brought it up here. I have to say this guy is quite amazing, and so is his story. I am especially impressed with the part where he tells how he got fired by his own company and started all over again. And his perception of death is so brave and positive. It must have inspired many young people. But David’s theory about finding one’s way sounded more helpful to me. Who said there is always “your way” to find? It just never felt right to me. You can only see it when you look behind you. I really liked your idea, David. And it is also my belief that when something bad happens, it’s a begging of something good. I can’t think of any good examples off the top of my head, but that is something I learned from my not-so-eventful life so far.

Gee, this is sounding awfully like a book report or a monologue. I think I should stop here.

Hi David,

I managed to read the speech. It was really high level and long! I think his life is full of ups and downs like roller-coaster. I agree with Lily. Your thought is more helpful to me.
About disappointments that turned out for the best, I think everything(both bad things and good ones) might happen by necessity, not by accident, and there might be some reason. I think it depends on your way of living or thinking whether you can change your disappointments into the best.

I read the speech. Impressed very much. This ‘connecting the dots’ story reminds me of Takamura Kotaro’s famous poem 「道程」, which goes like this;
「僕の前に道はない　僕の後ろに道は出来る　道は僕のふみしだいて来た足あとだ　だから道の最端にいつでも僕は立つてゐる」(excerption)
Recently I come to think that there’s no futile experience in your life, even if it’s a very bad one.

高村光太郎、「道程」・・！　中学生の頃、大好きだった国語の先生が読んでくれたものでした。　むらさきさんが書いてくれるまで、すっかり忘れていました。。　本当にDavidのお話とぴったりですね・・！　中学生の頃は難しかった高村光太郎も、今なら理解できるかも・・。　もしかしたらむらさきさん、相田みつを とかも好きですか･･？（私は好きなのです）　全然違っていたらごめんなさい。　むらさきさんのコメントを読んで何となくそう思ったので・・。

高村光太郎かあ。わたしも確かにそのフレーズ、どこかで読んだ覚えがあります。教科書に載ってたのかな？（だってわたしは自分で詩とか読まないし＾＾）
今はあんまり読書とかしなくなったけど、子供の頃読んだものや、学校で読まされたり見せられたりしたようなものは、意外と心のどこかに残っていて、人生の糧になっているのかな・・・なんて思いました。

Steve Jobsのスピーチは確かバークレー大学の卒業式のゲストスピーチのものだったと思います。自分の経験を素直に、しかも、自分でつかんだ哲学を飾らずに話してことに感銘しました。１年ほど前に読みプリントはいまだに捨てていません。それだけ!!!しました。

ところで、今回のＤａｖｄｉのブログのタイトルが“Blessings in disguise"です。自分自身でと思いますが、"David'sインチキ理論”という題にしています。

Hi David＆everyone,
言いたいことが英語でうまく伝えられないので日本語ですみません。日々の生活の中にこそ自分の道があるということにとても考えさせられました。そういうことって普段の生活ではあまり気にとめませんよね。先のことに不安になったりするけれど今が大事なんだとあらためて思いました。やはり経験者の言葉は伝わります。今はまだ振り返ってみても道と呼べそうなものは確かにはわかりませんけど、DavidやSteve Jobs の話が聞けてよかったなと思いました。

Tomo,　いつも私の支えとなる３つの詩のうちのひとつは相田みつをの
「しあわせは　いつも自分のこころが　きめる」
です。今回Tomoが紹介してくださった詩もとてもすばらしいですね。ありがとうございます。

Lily, ひとつ前のブログのコメントですが、まさにおっしゃるとおりなので、 I just want to let you know that I couldn’t agree with you more on your comment on different kinds of English. If (or Because ) English is the global language, as you mentioned, we should adapt ourselves to many kinds of English (pronunciation or accent?), let alone American English and British English.

By the same token, I’ve heard not a few native English speakers say, “It’s OK for Japanese people to speak ‘Japanese English’, because it’s your character. And characteristic English can sometimes even make the speaker very charming.” Remember Boutros Boutros-Ghali, former Secretary-General of the U.N.? He speaks Ghali’s English. That means we don’t need to make too much efforts to speak like “Americans” when we speak English. Because the number of people who speak English in “perfect pronunciation” is very very small. 大切なのは内容ということですね。

I can read all his speech without stopping, but of course, I spent a lot of a lot of time to read it. But, I really think that his speech makes a strong impression. From his speech, I realize that a strong mind (don't fear failure) is important for life. There is no useless things in my life. I believe myself and want to walk on 「自分の道」. I always think that the person who can say the word influence our mind is wonderful. David, you are one of them.

How are you? This is too long. I tried to summarize and translate the speech by Jobs in English and Japanese. I understand not all of it（すべてを理解できたわけではない）. So I may misunderstand some parts of it. If you have time, tell me what I didn't understand（一部分でもよいです）. However, this is quite long and not clearly. If you don't have time, don't read the following. I'm going to sleep now. So I will read his speech later to understand more.

First story
His biological mother put him up for adoption because she was a college graduate student who was not married. And a couple who had never graduated from college(his father has never graduated from high-school became his parents. First, his biological mother reject them because of their academic background. But they told her he would go to college, and then she signed the final adoption papers. And he went to college 17 years later. But he couldn't find what he needs for his future in the college(it has no value) and drop out.
(大学自体を辞めたのか、必修のクラスを辞めたのかどちらなのでしょうか？）
And then, he took calligraphy class with a poor life.
(Reed collegeとは最初に入学した大学と同じですか？）
１０years later, his friend and he were designing the first Macintosh computer.

彼のconnecting dotsとは、大学を辞めたことにより、書道の授業を受け、それがMacのデザインをすることに繋がったということなのでしょうか？過去の挫折（決断）が未来に繋がるということを言いたかったのでしょうか？

Second story
20歳の時に友達と２人でappleという会社を作り、10年で社員4000人、（資本金？）20億円の会社に成長させた。才能のある人間を雇い、1年はうまくいったが、方向が別れてしまったために、30歳で自分が始めた会社を解雇された。挫折を味わったが、その事が成功に繋がった。5年の間にNeXTと、Pixarという会社を始め、今の奥さんに出会い、アニメ映画会社として成功し、AppleがPixarを買ったので結果的にAppleに再就職したことになった。

人は時々レンガに頭をぶつけるような挫折に出会うけれども、信念を忘れないようにしなさい。仕事は人生の大部分を占めるので、あなたが信じられることをすることがすばらしい仕事になれば満たされる？（Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work理解できなかった）。やりたいことがまだ見つかっていないのなら、安定（一つの仕事に定着するのではなく）を求めるのではなく、探し続けなさい。

Third story
17歳の時に読んだ本に感銘を受け、その後33年間、毎朝鏡に向かって、今日が人生の最後だったら、自分はどういう自分になりたいか（？）と問い続けた。
（whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row訳せなかったところ）

癌に侵されたが、手術により克服・・・

死に直面した時に一番大きな人生の選択ができる。人生は終わりがあるので、自分の心の奥底の声を無視して他人の意見に耳を傾けるのではなく、自分の心と直感に従う自身を持ちなさい。本当になりたいものはわかっているはずだから、他のことは二の次だ。

Hi David,
I was impressed by your idea. I thought sometimes I was walking a ‘wrong path’ and there must be a ‘true path’ somewhere. But you said “my ‘path’ was made up of the things I did and the decisions I made every day”. There may not be a wrong path. There may be just my unique path I am making every day. Instead of thinking this is a wrong path, I want to trust and enjoy my life. Every little experience turns to be a piece of my path. Even bad experiences make me grow up. This idea encourages me to enjoy and value every day of my life.

I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: ""If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.
毎朝鏡を見て自分自身にこう問いかけてきました。「もし今日が人生最後の日だったら、今日しようとしていることをしたいと思うだろうか。」この問いに対して「No」という答えが何日も続くときには、何かを変える必要があるということがわかるのです。

私はアメリカの大学システムについて詳しくないので、よく分かりませんが、おそらく籍は置いたまま、学部または学科の履修をやめたのではないでしょうか？なぜならそのあとに、「正式に退学した」とあるので。（stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit.）それともう少し後のほうに、Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal classes,　普通の講義を履修する必要がなかったともありますね。

The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.
なので、同様に「drop outするとすぐ、興味のない必修の講義を受ける必要がなくなり、面白そうな講義を受けてみることができた。」さらに、Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. とあるますし、Reed Collegeのcalligraphy classのことだと思います。

connecting the dots については、m.n.がおっしゃるように、過去の一つ一つの出来事（点）が後から振り返って見ればみんな現在につながっている（糧になっている）ということだと思います。将来を見ながら点を結ぶことは不可能だけれど、何年か経ってから振り返った時、1つ1つがみんなつながっているのがはっきりわかるということだと思うんです。

Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.
「仕事は人生の大きな部分を占めることになるでしょう。そして、本当に納得（満足？）するためのただ1つの方法は、あなたがすばらしい仕事だと思えることをやることだ。そして、すばらしい仕事をするためのただひとつの方法は、あなたがやっていることを愛すること（好きになること）だ。」（途中からはAshが訳してくださったとおりです。日本語が稚拙でごめんなさい。でも、だいたいこんな意味だと思います。）

最後の部分は、Ashの訳で完璧だと思います。

Wow, I’m impressed with your work! It’s one thing to read it through and get the “gist” of it (or think you did) but it’s another to really understand it and making a neat summary like this. I think your summary is pretty good. And Ash filled most blanks. So I’ll tackle with the college part.（以下要約）

Steve Jobsは17歳でReed collegeに入学したが6ヶ月で中退した。まだ将来の展望もなく、大学で学ぶことがどう将来に役立つのか、そして労働者階級である両親が一生懸命ためたお金を費やすほどの価値があるのか、という疑問を抱いたからだ。しかしその後も１年半ほどは聴講生として興味のあるクラスに出席していた。その中の一つが書道（っていうのかな？）だったが、これが10年後アップルコンピュータの活字デザインに活かされることになろうとは夢にも思わなかった。後から考えてみれば、すべての点がつながっているのだ。

It's been raining since yesterday around Tokyo.What's it like in your neiborhood??

I've read your evocative comments.Actualy,I'm neither good at,nor used to expressing my ideas about life.But I'll bear in my mind the phrase "connecting the dots".
That reminds me of what one of my friends said, "Everythig happens for reason". I also agree with this concept.What dou you think???

As I mentioned,I finished the 2 day seminar for the oral examination of English tour guide test yesterday.That was like a discussion class at a university and I found it very interesting.

Topics we gave presentations are such as...
*What dou you think about Mr.Shinzo Abe?
*How should we deal with North Korea?
*Why are such loud announcements made at train stations all the time in Japan? (Hahaha...I want to know how David feels about this!)
*What dou you think about the increase in "freeters", or job-hopping part-timers, in Japan today?
*What dou you think about the continuing cases of suicides caused by bullying?
*What dou you think about the widening gap between rich and poor in Japan today? etc.....

I certainly have my own opinion on each social issue, but it's difficult to express it in English instantly in clear and concise sentences as the explanation to foreign tourists who came to Japan for the first time...

Hi, all.

It's either overcast or rainy all day today. I'm trying to fight off the sleepiness as usual... Bloggers also seem to be getting off to a slow start this week.

I have to thank David for introducing the Steve Jobs' speech. I am deeply touched and greatly inspired. I used to be told to make future plans carefully and precisely before getting down to it. But after reading his speech, I came to realize that it means, borrowing Jobs words, to "connect the dots"that don't even exist yet and I was trying to connect the dots as I mark the dots at the same time. But as it is true of everything, you'll need some leeway in your life. Because things don't always work out the way you wish no matter how carefully they are planned.

My blessings in disguise would be that I had to come back to Japan against my will. I got to see and experience a lot of great things I would/could not have otherwise done - I've started some new hobbies met some interesting people, I was able to spend some time with my grandma before she took her last breath, got to see my niece and nephew born and grow... Now I know for sure that I appreciate the time leading up to now since I came back. Without it, I would have missed out just way too much. And I hope I'm seeing things a little bit more clearly.

Hi Everyone,

I'm glad you liked the Steve Jobs speech. I know it is very difficult, but the great thing about this blog is that we can try more difficult things because everyone is working together. I hope my students can learn to cooperate as well as you do! Special thanks to m.n. for your summary, and thanks to the others who filled in the blanks. I am not going to make a new entry today because I think some people are probably still working through the speech and I don't want to change the topic yet.
It was really interesting for me to hear about the Japanese poems. Isn't it amazing that such different people as an American businessman and a Japanese poet are saying exactly the same thing? Or maybe it's not so amazing, because we are all humans and we experience so many of the same kinds of things.
I'm still looking forward to hearing some more stories of 'blessings in disguise'. (By the way Nyanguru, I have nothing negative to say about Japan's railway system or stations at all! If you visit Britain and try to use the railways there, you will realize how wonderful Japan is!)
Anyway, on Wednesday I am going to introduce you to our next special guest. Her name is Umidahon Ashurova, but we just call her Umida. She is from Uzbekistan, but she lives in Japan now. She speaks Uzbek, Russian, English and Japanese. She is married and she has a small child. Her husband is also from Uzbekistan. She is a Muslim, and so she has some beliefs that might seem unusual to many of you. For example, she has told her husband that it is okay if he wants to have some more wives in the future because in her religion, it is okay for the man to have as many as four wives.
Anyway, you will be meeting her on Wednesday, so お楽しみ！I'm going home to make dinner now.

Thank you soooooooo much your very useful help. I didn't expect of quick reply. Yes, it was very hard work, so I couldn't rewrite clearly after I finished the work because I was exhausted. Even though it was not clearly, you all told us what I didn't understand. むらさき, are you sure that you were at work? Your explanation is very clearly.

I'm going to resummarise(translate?) his sppech under your helps.

This is like my note for understanding his speech well. So try to read the following if you still have some parts which you don't understand. Please tell me if there are something wrong.

First story
　産みの親は、未婚で大学院生であったために、自分が産まれる前に、すでに養子にすることを決めていた。そして、大学を卒業していない女性と高校を卒業していない男性の夫婦が養子にする赤ちゃんを待っており、彼らに引き取られることになった。しかし、産みの母親は彼らの学歴を理由に最初はサインを拒んだが、彼らが自分を大学に行かせるだろうということを伝えたので、彼女は承諾した。（その彼らが自分を育てた両親である。）　

Steve Jobs（自分は）は17歳でReed collegeに入学したが6ヶ月で中退した。まだ将来の展望もなく、大学で学ぶことがどう将来に役立つのか、そして労働者階級である両親が一生懸命ためたお金を費やすほどの価値があるのか、という疑問を抱いたからだ。しかしその後も１年半ほどは聴講生として興味のあるクラスに出席していた。その中の一つが書道（っていうのかな？）だったが、これが10年後アップルコンピュータの活字デザインに活かされることになろうとは夢にも思わなかった。後から考えてみれば、すべての点がつながっているのだ。（by Lily）

Second story
20歳の時に友達と２人でappleという会社を作り、10年で社員4000人、（資本金？）20億円の会社に成長させた。才能のある人間を雇い、1年はうまくいったが、方向が別れてしまったために、30歳で自分が始めた会社を解雇された。挫折を味わったが、その事が成功に繋がった。5年の間にNeXTと、Pixarという会社を始め、今の奥さんに出会い、アニメ映画会社として成功し、AppleがPixarを買ったので結果的にAppleに再就職したことになった。

人は時々レンガに頭をぶつけるような挫折に出会うけれども、信念を忘れないようにしなさい。

「仕事は人生の大きな部分を占めることになるでしょう。そして、本当に納得（満足？）するためのただ1つの方法は、あなたがすばらしい仕事だと思えることをやることだ。そして、すばらしい仕事をするためのただひとつの方法は、あなたがやっていることを愛すること（好きになること）だ。(byむらさき）

やりたいことがまだ見つかっていないのなら、安定（一つの仕事に定着するのではなく）を求めるのではなく、探し続けなさい。

Third story
17歳の時に読んだ本に感銘を受け、その後33年間、

毎朝鏡を見て自分自身にこう問いかけてきました。「もし今日が人生最後の日だったら、今日しようとしていることをしたいと思うだろうか。」この問いに対して「No」という答えが何日も続くときには、何かを変える必要があるということがわかるのです。(by ash)

すい臓癌に侵されたが、手術により克服・・・

死に直面した時に一番大きな人生の選択ができる。人生は終わりがあるので、自分の心の奥底の声を無視して他人の意見に耳を傾けるのではなく、自分の心と直感に従う自身を持ちなさい。本当になりたいものはわかっているはずだから、他のことは二の次だ。

How are you? You had good experience, but got tired of it, didn't you. You seems to be busy. Anyway, I'm going to try to answer some of the following questions.

*What dou you think about Mr.Shinzo Abe?
Actually, I don't know what he is going to do make Japan better country. He doesn't look powerful, so I think he just does things given. And I don't know why his wife gets attention about her fashion as the first lady. Is the fashion of the first lady more important than any other issues in Japan? I think Mr. Shinzo should change something and they are the most important in Japan, but his wife which kinds of clothes wear.

*Why are such loud announcements made at train stations all the time in Japan? (Hahaha...I want to know how David feels about this!)
It's because most of Japanese people always rush out something like working, going home... So we can't accept the trains are late, even a few minutes. That is why we need any informations about time schedule of trains.

It's hard to make opininons as soon as I get questions, especially in English. Don't get feel down
because of only 2 answers. ちょっと疲れちゃいました・・・

I seemed have a similar experience to you about connecting dots.(my experience is not big) I came back to my hometown a few years ago against my will even though I decided it not like you. First a half year, I couldn't find any funs things because most of my friends are the city where I used to live and my hometown is countryside. However, this was my decision. The life is short. So I changed my mind and find something for my life. And I started to learn English again. And then, my life is getting energetic. I started to go to English Lesson and meet this blog. This will lead to my success in my future. I hope. Even though I'm still on the path which I haven't find what I want to do yet, I will find something near future. I'm not satisfied with my life now. However, I don't regret that I came back here. I'm also having fun with my nephew!! I'm sorry this is too long and my story may be different from your story. (なんとなく親近感のわく話だったので、コメントしてしまいました）

Sorry, I couldn't write my comment. I think I caught a cold. It's not so bad, I just feel dizzy a little. So my "English brain" doesn't work well..
I just wanted to say this. I felt the same way about that it is amazing that such different people are saying exactly the same thing, or maybe it's not so amazing, because we are all humans and we experience so many of the same kinds of things.
We are all different, but maybe it doesn't make much difference whether American or Japanese or British. We are all moved by the same kinds of things. That means we can understand each other. I'm glad I found it.

m.n, good morning. Thanks for your comment. It does sound like you have a very similar experience, except that you got over it only after 6 months later. You are positive than you think you are. It took me much longer. I was in denial for quite a long time. Whether you can learn a good lesson out of what appears to be a negative experience depends totally on your attitude, I guess. When there's nothing you can do about it, you just have to change your mind and move on, instead of dwell on it. It's easier said than done. We learned the same lesson, didn't we?

You said you've been to Boston! What time of the year did you go? Visit Boston (the New England area) in the fall. You'll enjoy the beautiful, vivid colored autumn leaves. Autumn in New England has a very different feel to it compared to that of Japan.

Tomo, I was just wondering what you were doing. Don't work too hard. Get some rest! I agree with you that there is no difference in the fundamental ideas or truth about life and life's lessons we can learn, though the process of learning the same lesson may be completely different.

Kiko, are you back from Chicago? How was your trip? Did you get to eat Chicago Kalbi? Let us know.

私はスピーチの英文をそのまま日本語に置き換えることもなくさっと読んで、大意をつかんだだけで、細かいところはあいまいにしたまま（見て見ぬふり）で終わりにしていました。
それでもその内容のすばらしさは良く分かりましたが、翌朝m.n.のコメントを見て大反省（猛反省？日本語までおかしくなった？）！私は脳の表面で読んでいただけで、しっかり脳に刻み込んでいなかったのがわかりました。これでは進歩がないわけですね。
それで、仕事中でしたが、m.n.の助けを借りながら私なりにいろいろ考えてみた次第です。おかげさまでより深く理解することができました。

Thanks for your reply. You seemed to spend long time to get over, didn't you? I think it's because you coudn't contact with your friends easily and the life in Japan and Amerca were quite different. In my case, I had often called to my friends when I felt down and missed them. In addition to that, I visited them twice a year. I sometimes think of going back there even I don't regret now as I told you.
