It's getting colder and colder lately. How are you guys?? I enjoyed reading all comments because I've never studied and lived abroad. I also have no plans to go abroad but your comments made me want to go somewhere in the world.
This time I tried to listen to the sound file first before reading David's comment. I undrerstood almost everything David said... I was wrong!! I thought David liked roller coasters when he came to Japan! I thought "Oh yeah, Japanese amusument parks are awesome, like Fujikyu-highland..." I was stupid!
Anyway, I was relieved to hear that you are getting better.

I used to live in Canada for 6 months but it was not long enough to learn English and other stuff like culuture. But even this short time, I had such a great experience! and my views of life changed a lot actually. "I lived in such a small world!" I felt so after I came back to Japan. and also I realized there are many good things in Japan too. It was a great chance to think of Japan from another country. Each country has pros and cons, so I think I should find a middle ground. (Actually I tend to complain about Japan just after I came back to Japan! )

Anyway, I can't wait everyone's comments and David's.

Thank you for your advice. But I should forget all of the reasons? Wow, I never thought of that. But I think it's very you!(as a good meaning, of course.) The 3 words struck my heart. Actually, It almost jumped out of my chest. Life is short..you are right. Maybe I should do that.
When my son got home from school today, I asked him, "Can I travel overseas alone? Just for a little while." Then he said, "No! I'm going with you!"
If I could forget my husband(sorry, Papa, but I love you!), I would never forget my children. I bet your mother always thinks of you, cares for you. No matter how old you get, No matter how far away you live, it never change. That's what it's a mother. So maybe I should find a job to save money for a trip for five people.

Anyway, I'm glad to hear that you are feeling a lot better. Don't worry, we are always here for you! And the corrections helped me a lot. Thanks iun and David.

Hi there

Someone told David to eat honey-dipped-Japanese-radish to soothe a sore throat. My grandmother used to do that! One time -- when i was little -- she brought me a jar of honey-dipped radish. I saw the bottle and was totally shocked. There were some ants trapped in this honey filled jar! No way I was going to eat (or lick) that...lol...but I'm pretty sure はちみつ大根 (without アリ) is good for your throat.

Iun, are you going to Christchurch (CHCH) next month? Cool! I went there two years ago and loved it. It's a beautiful city, people are so nice and friendly, and there are a lot of activities you can enjoy. One of them is "punting" (boat riding) on the Avon river. A one-hour bus ride will take you to a beautiful harbor called Lyttleton. But watch out for Kiwi English, it can be a bit confusing at first. When I was there, it took me a while to understand what "ギィール" and "キィット" meant (which later turned out to be "ギィール = girl" and "キィット = cat"). But don't worry too much, you'll get used to their accent soon ;-)

CHCHは一度行っただけですが、自然が美しく、現地の人はフレンドリーだし、大好きな場所です！キウイイングリッシュは最初ちょっと戸惑いましたが…。でもすぐに慣れると思うので、あまり心配しないでね。

I've also been to the states (NY, LA and some other cities), Canada and England.　(Thanks for asking, Alex! This answers your question:-) I really liked NZ and wanna go back there some time.

Tomo, I agree with David's opinion on going abroad. Take it easy and just do it ;-)

Your English was great! Maybe the person at the dentist said "No Monday and Wednesday" for confirmation, I think. It happens in a hospital or something in Japan. Never mind! But I think "No Monday and Wednesday" is very simple expression. How about this?

I'd like to make a appointment for my daughter, after school hours, no Monday and Wednesday, please.

Surprised! I didn't expect Davit would suggest me my mistake by himself. But he did.
I didn't know we should say "Including me" or "myself included".
I felt how wonderful this blog is.
Also I was very impressed Davit's suggestion for Tomo san.
Just do it! If you think about it, you will probably come up with hundreds of reasons why you can't go.
It's not just for Tomo and for going somewhere, but for every person and everything.
Most of persons tend to search hundreds of reasons why you can't do it even you want to do without try.
Many people are wasting a lot of chances to make it their dreams including me because of these mistakes.
I tried using Davit's suggestion now "including me not include me"

Hello everybody!

I enjoyed all stories here. You guys look traveling a lot. Lucky you!

I had not started to study English when I went to the U.S. as the first overseas travel. On a way to the U.S., when a flight attendant asked me what I want to drink, I odered "コーヒー" with very Jaapanese pronunciation. She couldn't understand what I said so I said "コーヒー" again and again.
Finally, my coworker who was American and could speak Japanese almost perfectly ordered coffee for me and said "発音がダメだったみたい。(苦笑)あれ意地悪だと思うよ。普通あれくらい言えば分かるよ。".
Anyway I really enjoyed two weeks there. I went to San Jose, Atlanta, Disney World, Vero Beach.
Two months later from the trip, I started to study English at super beginner's class doing "There is a pen."
So, don't say "I'm a beginner". (kidding!) I was a beginner at that time. It was six years ago.

And I love supermarkets in America. Some people around me love those too. They are huge, have a lot of strange things.

The day befor yesterday, I was surprised and excited when I found your comment "I don't think you are beginner." Thank you so much! I was happy, and your words cheered me to write comment in English.
Your new idea, putting "( )" on important phrase, is nice, I think.（←変な英文な気がする…） I can learn it is useful phrase for writting or speaking English.

Yesterday, I wanted to post my comment, but I can't. I was very tired and went to bed early because I went to pool and swam for two hours after I finished my work. （2年ぶりくらいに泳ぎました！）

It’s so interesting for me to hear various stories（＾‐＾＊）Every time I think of going or living foreign country, my feeling is growing☆I know I have difficulty communicating with native speakers. But I want to go and live in England, Australia, or Canada someday. No matter how my English is poor, I have a strong mind or I can do it. David said ''Life is short.'' I think so too. 昨日、Tomo&Alexに私が書きたかったことです☆
Davidが言うように行けない理由を考えすぎるより、行きたいと思うときが行くべきとき！！と思って先月イングランドに行ってきました。今までの私ならこんなに遠い旅行に出かける勇気はなかったと思います。私が行った町では、海辺でおじいちゃんとおばあちゃんが仲良く手をつないで散歩している様子がそこでは当たり前の光景で、どのカップルの姿も本当にすごく素敵だなと思いました。そういう和やかな雰囲気・優しい空気…いつかホントにここで住みたいと心から感じました。ますます大好きになりました。来年からは不規則な勤務で、のんびり海外旅行に行ける時間など作れないかも…と不安になりますが、それでも私は暇を見つけて海外旅行へ行こうと決めています。外国の文化、コミュニケーション、食べ物のことetcとにかく、もっともっと知りたい気持ちでいっぱいです。こんなに何かに興味を持ったり、強い気持ちを感じたことは初めてで、この気持ちを大切にしたいから、自分に素直に行動してみたいと思います。Tomoが海外行ったときはぜひぜひ話を聞きたいです☆いろんなことにexitingしてる想像をしてしまいます（＾‐＾＊）

メモ帳やメーラーの新規作成の画面等を使って下書きして、書き終わった後に文章をコピーしてコメントのウィンドウに貼り付けると良いですよ。時々保存すれば間違って消してもやり直しが効くし、コメントのウィンドウに直接書くよりずっと楽だと思います。

Your "coffee" story reminds me of my sister's funny experience. She ordered for herself a coffee at a restaurant somewhere in Carifornia. And then, what she was served was a "Coke"! Funny, isn't it?
In her case the point is the "f" sound, I guess.

This is my second comment, i.e. I am the person not posting my name…
Thanks David for taking care of me.
I completely have the same feeling with David. One day, I felt like my English is fine and I can communicate easily, but other day, I felt like my English is too terrible and lost my confidence. One of my Japanese friends who has been here for 3 years and speaks English very fluently told me that if just living abroad gets your English to improve, there would not be any English schools in the UK. Thanks to the friend, the people in this blog and David, I realized that the only way to improve English was just using it!
David, can I ask a question?
How did you make a Japanese friend before your Japanese became fine? I know this is a sort of chicken-or-egg argument. But actually it is quite difficult to make friends with English not enough to communicate. Of course, I want to make friends with British people.

They say it will go over 20 degrees during the daytime, but I just can't buy it from the bitter coldness in the morning! I finally tood out my gloves to bicycle at 6:30 am. Shivering!!

m.n, I misspelled the word "slump" for slum. スランプだったというと聞こえがいいですが、今で言うニートにすらなれなかった臆病者です（笑）。私の考えは甘いかも知れませんが、あらゆる状況が許すなら、今後の人生をどう生きたいか何をしたいかを探しに、今ある現実から離れて自分や置かれている状況を客観視するための時間を持つのもいいかなって思いますよ。確かに、現地で大学に行こうとか働こうと考えたらそれなりの準備と覚悟と目的がしっかりしていないとくじけてしまいますが。海外は一見、非現実だけれど実のところ超現実だったりしますよね。

Ayako & m.n、"envy"の件ですが、似た表現に"jealous"ってありますよね。実は、その2つの違いをネイティブの人に聞いた記憶がありますが、はっきりと覚えていません（苦笑）。間違っていたらごめんなさい。おそらく、嫉妬やねたみに近いのが jealous で、もう少し純粋に「うらやましい」というときは envy だったと思います。でも、I'm jealous (of you). という表現をよく耳にしましたから、使う状況によってそれほどいやな感じはないんだと思います…。例えば、会社の同僚がバケーションでハワイに行ったという話を聞て、その間働いていた自分としては、I'm jealous. って言うような気がします。どうでしょう…？

Kiko, I don't think you said anything wrong. すごいですね。最初にコメントをされた時の頼りない感じからは想像がつきません。Mothers are strong! 一つだけ…。No Monday and Wednesday? と聞かれて、日本語で「そうです」と言いたいときは、"No."になるんだと思いますよ。ちょっとややこしい!!!質問に否定語が入っているとわけが分からなくなりますよね。「月・水はだめなのね？」に、日本語は「はい、だめです。」って言いますよね。一見、肯定していますが、「だめ」という点では否定。だから、否定の付加疑問と同じだと思います。私も苦手です。だからいつも逃げの手を使います（笑）。True/False形式で応えると、今言われたことが正しいか間違っているかになるので、日本語の「はい/いいえ」に近いでしょうか。"Right./That's correct./That's right."と言えば、「その通りです」と言うことになるので、質問が否定かどうか気にしなくてよくなりますよね。

Your advice about "envy" and "jealous" helped me a lot. It's still kind of difficult expression for me. When I was writing the last comment to you, I was not sure which words I should choose, "Lucky you!" or "I envy you!" or "I'm jealous!"
"envy" も "jealous" も強い言葉のような気がして、使った事がないのですが、もっと軽い意味で使えるのかな・・？と思いました。　それから、私も"No Monday and Wednesday?" の返事は"No" かな・・と引っ掛かったのですが、説明が難しくって。　この辺は本当に難しいですよね。　頭で理解しても気持ちがなかなか気持ちが付いていかない、という感じです。　でも "Right./That's correct./That's right." を使うのはいいアイディアですね！　私も今度試してみます。

PS You are right, women are weak, but mothers are strong!

実はコメントを入れた後、気になってちょっと調べてみたんですよ。Jealous vs Envious (Envy)の使われ方は、研究がなされるほどネイティブの間でも微妙らしいです。No wonder why we can't tell one from the other! Jealousは全般的に負の意味があるようです－喪失の不安、裏切りに対する不信感や怒り、自尊心の低さや喪失に対する悲しみ、不安などを伴ったねたみ、嫉妬（!?）。一方、Envyには、劣等感、その気持ちを抱いている相手に対する罪悪感を伴う悪意（反感）という意味での嫉妬心もあるようですが、憧れ、向上する意欲、ライバルと同じ能力を持ちたいという願望が含まれるようですよ。（ちなみに参考にしたサイトは：http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jealousy_definitions）使われる状況によっては、さほど違いがない単語なのかも知れませんね。あ～難しっ！

envyの件、ありがとうございます！　辞書で調べると、たいてい「ねたみ・嫉妬・うらやみ」という訳で始まるので、どうしても悪い印象を受けないかと心配になりました。ただ、英英辞典だと、jealous が feeling angry and unhappy ...　とあり、え？これも妬みだよね〜と、混乱してしまいました。でもalexさんが同僚の方に言った例はよくわかります。
話し言葉はその場の雰囲気や言い方で、妬んでるのか、羨ましいなぁと思っているのかが分かるのでしょうね。メールだと、言葉のイントネーションが分からないので、ニュアンスを伝えるのが難しいです。

Hi David, hi everybody!

I've just stumbled upon this site. I've been using Eijiro on the web for a long time but I didn't know they have such an interesting blog here. (BTW do you have a good word to call these individual sites? We would call them "corners", I guess. なんとかコーナーとかよく言いますよね？）

I've lived in Vancouver, Canada for a year. (I'm sure many of you have been there or lived there, since it's one of the most popular places for Japanese students ;) At first, I was going to stay there for 6 months to study English, but a couple of months later, I realized I wasn't making as much progress as I had hoped for and decided to stay longer.

When I came back to Japan, I found that I'd got used to Canadian or North American English so much that I had difficulty understanding other Englishes like British. So listening to David's English is a good practice for me, I think. Your English doesn't sound so British, though. (Ok, who am I to decide that??)

Just like everybody else, my English fluency seems to change everyday. When I feel sick or feel like my brain isn't working, my English becomes terrible. That sure makes me upset but I always try to think this way; "This is a good chance to enhance my English ability. If I could speak well when my brain is dead, I would be a really good speaker! "

See? Positive thinking! That's my policy ;)

　とんでもありません。まだまだ頼りないので宜しく御願いします。病院で予約をとるための表現は、わりとどんな本にでも載っていますよね。大体聞かれそうなことも想像がつくので前もってどういうか調べて行ったから、まあ大丈夫だったんです。でも、「No」と言わないといけなかったのに「Yes」と言っていたんですね。あちゃ～。そういえば「Yes」と言った後「Tuesday,Thursday or Friday」と私が言ったんですよ。だから、何とか通じていたのかもしれません。はあ、難しいですね。That's right ですね。Yes,Noはすぐ出てくるんですけど、それで、失敗することも多いのですね。予約は何とか取れましたが、治療に行くのは何を言われるか分からないので、今からとっても嫌です。I'm really nerves….

或る映画（タイトルは忘れました）を見た時に" I envy you"　「貴方が羨ましい」と言うニュアンスで使われていました。それも幾分甘えた様な口調で。
たぶんnativeでもそう使うのだと思います。
随分前の事ですが、しっかり記憶に残っています。

I have had some people (Japanese girls who were studying English) tell me "I envy you!", that always made me a little bit uncomfortable...it made me think "Did I do something to make you envy?" If I was someone like Paris Hilton, who doesn't have to have a real job (but is rich), gets invited to every glamorous party and movie premiere in Hollywood, and has a lot of cute rich guys to go out with, then I don't mind people telling me "I envy you!" and I would probably say "Oh yeah, envy me!"

でも、普通の会話だったら、I think it'd be nice if we could say...

- You're lucky to have an understanding husband (cute bf, lovely children etc)."
あなたには理解あるダンナ様 （素敵な彼氏、かわいい子供）がいてラッキーね=うらやましい！

- I wish I could speak English as well as you do.
あなたのように英語が話せたらいいのにな＝英語が上手くていいな～！

- I got short eyelashes. Yours look so long and full!

こんな感じで言われたら、何をうらやましがっているのかも明確になるし、"I envy you!"と言われた時のように驚いてしまうこともないと思います★

が一番いい表現じゃないかなと思ったのですが、どう思いますか？

私も、否定形で質問されると、　I'm always confused.
これもDavidの本で説明がありましたが、否定形で聞かれた場合、日本語で「いいえ（否定形の日本語）、行けます」と答えたくても、Yes（肯定形の英語）, I can.で答えなければいけないようです。これでは、わかりにくいですね。

私の体験談で話します。
アメリカ人の先生（T)が私（M)にお茶を勧めてくれた時の話です。

T「Do you have something to drink?」
M「No, thank you.」
T「Don't you want?」
M「Yes...」
この後、先生と私は「NoとYesを何度か言い合う羽目になり、わけがわからなくなって、ほんとはいらないのに結局、買ってきてもらうことになってしまいました。
　
本当は、「Noと答えなくてはならなかったのに。
日本語では「はい、いりません」と、言いたくても、英語では「いりません」の意味の方で「No」を使わなければいけないんですよね。

「はい＝Yes, いいえ=NO」という考え方を捨てなきゃいけないんですね。」
今まで何度説明されてもわからなかったのに、この本を読んで初めてなるほどと思いました。

"Do you mind if...?" 「～しても構いませんか？」の答え方（「どうぞ」なら"No, I don't", 「いいえ」なら"Yes, I do")と同じく、混乱しやすいですよね～。私もm.nさんと同じくハマってしまったことがあります。上のTomoさんの説明わかりやすいですね。
（日本語だとやっぱり「さん」付けしたくなる…）

でも、"Do you have a child?" 問答が何度か続いた後に、"Oh, so, you don't have a child?" とたたみかけるように言われたら、私はとっさに"Yeah...I mean, I don't have any kids."とか言ってしまいそうです…。もしYES/NOを間違えてしまっても、その後にフォローアップしたり、別の言い方で言えば大丈夫！と思います。I hope I'm not making Kiko more confused...　（Kikoさん、余計混乱させてしまったらごめんなさい。。。）

envyの使い方が少し話題になっているので、日本語書き込みで申し訳ありませんが少し付け加えます。
以前ＤＶＤの映画には日本語と英語の字幕が入っているので、英語のせりふをパソコンの中に書き取る事を一つの勉強方法としてやっていました。映画の数は２０以上になります。
チェックをしたら映画のタイトルが分かりました。
"The horse whisperer" 邦題は「モンタナの風に吹かれて？」主演、監督はロバットレッドフォード、前後のせりふを書くと
I know,I've seen it. I envy your mother. I do. It must be great to be her age...and to be at the point in life when you have no more guesswork.
まあ、これだけのフレーズを書いても前後関係の状況は想像できませんが、和文のスーパーでは「貴方のお母さんが羨ましい」とでていた様に記憶します。（和文スーパーは書き取っていないので）
envyの名詞としての意味は「ねたみ、羨望」となりますが、動詞では「羨ましい」で使えるのではないでしょうか？
アルクの英辞郎でもその様な表現がでています。
ｍ・ｎさんとのコメントと食い違ってしまってすみません。
そしてまた「英語と仲直りできる本　by David」の本をまだ読んでいません。今度探してみます。

Hello everyone! I'm so busy, let me write in Japanese.
YesとNoの答え方の話が出ていましたので、私も付け加えさせてくださいね。
否定文で質問されたときの答え方が日本語と異なることはわりと知られていて、よく耳にするのですが、相づちをうったり、命令されたときにも当てはまります。
相づちとは、例えば、
I'm not good at singing...　私、歌が下手だから・・・
と言われたら、日本語で「そんなことないよ！」と言う感覚でつい、No!と言ってしまいそうになりますよね。でも、そうすると「そのとおり！」と答えてしまっていることになります。ですから、Yes, you ARE!と答えなくてはいけないんです。相手が否定文で言ったことに「そうよねぇー」と相づちを打ちたければ、No...と言わないといけません。No, it is.とか、Yes, it isn't.という表現はないので、学校で習ったようにフルセンテンスで、No it isn't. Yes it is.と答える癖をつけると、間違えたときに違和感があるので、すぐに気がつくと思います。私もその方法でだんだん慣れてきました。（ときどき間違いますが・・・）
あと命令ですが、Don't～と言われたときも返事が逆になります。例えば、Don't forget ○○.と言われたときに、「はい」と答えるには、Noになります。なぜなら、後に続くのが、No, I won't (forget).だからです。ですから、銃を向けられてDon't move!と言われたときについYesと答えてしまうと撃たれますので、気をつけてくださいね（笑）。
というわけで、質問されたときでなくても注意が必要なときがあります。
ちなみに、Do you mind ～？で聞かれたとき、文法的にはNoが正しいのですが、会話ではよくSure.と答えたりもするようです。

髪型中心は、髪型設計中心のことでしょうか。私もよく見ました。中心は○○センターのようですね。（そのまんまやな・・・）　髪型設計もそのまんまですけど。

Hi, m.n. I'm just logging in before going to bed to tell you that はちみつ大根 juice is working! It doesn't smell very good but tastes nice and I like it. I chatted with an American friend earlier tonight and he told me about "Hot Toddy" (it's another folk remedy for a sore throat; a mixture of whiskey, hot water and hoeny). I wanted to try that too but I don't really drink much and decided not to.

How are you, David? You are busy or feel bad again?

I was really tired mentally. Because the comment about my experience abroad has gone during writing. I can't believe it.

But let me tell you about it...

I decided to traveled to the east coast in USA with my friend 5 years ago when we were university student. We wanted to find something to have confident. If we traveled hard like called"poor trip", we had thought getting something. So we did it. In the truth, many things happened more than we expected, especially 9.11 tero(that was terrible for the victims).
We went to Niagra falls(you should go there, you will find a mejestic view) first, and then, N.Y, Boston, Philadelphia, Washinton D.C(I really wanted to go, but I couldn't bacause of tero,生きていたことに感謝だけど）　and Florida. We met many kind, interesting people any cities. We saw many beautiful places. On the other hand, we faced hard situations. For example, we had to make reservation for amtrak(train) tickets and youth hostels. First, the staff hung up because of my lack of English skill...へこんだけど、慣れたら通じた。We stayed some stations at the night because Amtrak was always late some(4 or 5) hours, not minutes...
We met a few bad people, they said to us" go to china". I don't want follow them. We can see many discriminations in another countries(of courss, in Japan,too). But many people helped us telling us the way to somewhere, broght my heavy luggage...many things. Thank you guys!!!

In this trip, I experienced many things which I can't forget. I think people should travel anywhere even own country as possible as you can. I don't say the reason because they find something if you do so.

About 10 days after stayed in N.Y, 9.11 tero happened. We were in Philadelphia. We knew about it some hours later. Actually, I think I coudn't realize what happened then. People say "it's like movie". Exactly... I wish it just had been a bad dream...
I hope to be stopped the war right now. Don't kill each other... just understand each other, we all are different

私の経験ですが、日本のあるホテルでの朝食の時、チーズコーナーで
一緒になった二十歳位の美青年に（御両親と弟さんは、少し離れた席にいました。）

We enjoyed swimming in the lukewarm sea, put on and off our swimsuit in the bush. Also people coming from a island 500km away treated us to lunch (native cuisine using taro and coconuts) with a present(2L coke).
