Comprehensible input
Hi Everyone,
How are things with you? I am always tired on Mondays because I teach all morning and then have a meeting all afternoon. I don’t like meetings. Thank you for your votes on the writing. I think the result is that everyone who entered was a winner in somebody’s eyes!
I have been thinking a lot about teaching English recently (because that’s my job!) and I have realized that the biggest problem for Japanese learners is that you don’t have enough input of natural English. When I ask my students to speak or write in English, the sentences they produce are not really English, but more like Japanese sentences with English words replacing the Japanese words. つまり、多くの日本人の学習者が作っている英文は英語の文章ではなく、英単語を当てはめた日本語の文章です。これは通じないことが多いです。例えば、…
I want early to meet him. （早く彼に会いたい）
この文章は「早く」の訳も間違っているし、単語は日本語の順番のままですね。
In natural English, this would be ‘I can’t wait to see him’.
もし自然な日本語の知らない英語人がこれをそのまま訳そうとするならどうなるでしょうか。「私は彼に会うのが待てない」？ 全然意味が違うでしょう！ やはり直訳は危険ですね。

I have nothing my dream.
これはおそらくI don’t have a dream.という意味かな？でも、日本語の知らない人だったらこの文章の意味はきっと解けないと思います。
If I get angry to her, I allow her when she tears.
(Sometimes I get angry with her, but I forgive her when she cries.)
All of these sentences were written by students I have taught in Japan. I always tell my students that their sentences are not really English, but recently I have realized that this is because they don’t have enough input of natural English to know what is English and what is not. I always thought that Japanese students get lots of input in junior high school and high school, but actually, I don’t think they do. （ポイント：I think they don’t.よりもI don’t think they do.の方が自然です。）In public schools, most English classes are done in Japanese, and the listening practice is just listening to the same CD or tape again and again. Students read, but they only read one kind of text, they read very slowly, and they don’t read very much. That’s why this blog is such good practice for you: every day you are reading English sentences that you can understand about topics that interest you. This is very, very important in language learning, and I don’t think my students get enough of it. (Did I tell you about the ‘Book Flood’ experiment in Fiji? If I haven’t told you yet, let me know and I will tell you next time.) Have you heard of a man called Stephen Krashen? He is a famous language teacher and researcher from America, and in the 1980s he said that the most important thing in language learning is lots and lots and lots of comprehensible input. This means input from reading or listening that you can understand. I have an idea for doing a book based on the kind of writing we did in our competition. If I decide to do it, I hope you will all help me write it!

Do you have cold? Be careful not to be serious. Onsen is the best way to get rid of tired. I didn't think British people like onsen. You are special? Or it depends on people? Anyway, spend the silent and beauty time in an onsen!!
I don't think you told us about the "Book flood" experiment in Fiji. I'm not sure because I didn't read your blog from first(この場合、fromは不必要ですか？日本語では、最初からと言いますが、「今から」を英語に訳すと「now」のみｄいんですよね。）. I want you to tell us about it even if you had already done it.
I realize that this blog make my English skill go up little by little. My reading speed in English are faster than before meeting this blog. I still misunderstand something in English, though.

About the ‘Book Flood’, is it about an interesting study that some researchers did in Fiji? It was the experiment showed that reading a lot will have an effect on everything, not just reading.
If this is about the ‘Book Flood’, you told us on October 13th. The title of the entry was "The value of reading".
But it's been a long time, and we've got new bloggers, so you might want to tell us again.
I've heard of a man called Stephen Krashen and his theory "input hypothesis" a little. In Japanese, he said “理解可能なインプットを受け取るという方法でのみ、人間は言語を習得できる”.
His theory inspired me and I changed the way of studying English about a year ago.
If you do a book based on the kind of writing we did in our competition, of course I will help you!

が、少し気になりました。
きっと m.nさんは、「（風邪が）ひどくならないように気をつけて」と言っているのだと思うのですが、上の文だと、「深刻にならないようにして」という意味にとられるのではないかと思うのです。
Try not to be serious.
と、同じようにです。
私も English input が足りない日本人の一人なので、確信はありませんが、
Take care that your cold don't get worse.
これなら、間違いないと思います！
もっと簡単な言い回しがありそうですけれど…
それから、次の文にある get rid of tired も、
get rid of weariness にしたり、また、この四語を refresh という一語に置き換えてもいいのでは、と思います。
もし、私の方が間違っていたら、本当に恥ずかしく、申し訳ないです。

WikipediaでStephen Krashenについえ読みました。日本語検索ではヒットしなかったのですが、英語のＷｉｋｉｐｅｄｉａで検索できました。スゴイ人（教授）です。語学の学習では、acquired と learned を区別し、acquried でなければ使えないとし、acquired にするために多読することを主張しています。
語学を身に付けるには本を多量に読むことが必要なことを実感しています。これは母国語の日本語でも同じです。本を離さないアメリカ人と日本人の友達がいます。彼らの書く文章は明確で品があり素晴らしいです。当然話題も豊富で楽しい友人達です。多読が必要であり、ベストの方法ですね。

和英辞書で「許す」を引いて ａｌｌｏｗ を見つけて使った英訳ではないかと思います。
I have nothing my dream.
I have nothing in my dream と表現したかったのではないか？と考えます。
この英訳は、『動詞』の理解が足らないからではないかと思います。allowやhaveの意味と使い方が理解できていれば違った表現や単語を使った文章になったとおもいます。
学校で最初に教える英文が「ｂｅ」動詞であることが英語を身に付ける障害になっていると思います。なぜ、第一文型の動詞を使った文章、第二文型の動詞の文章といった順番で教科書が作られていないのだろうか？（最近のはそうなっているかな？そうであれば効率的に効果的に学べます。）

I haven’t said hi to you all, I think. So, Hi! ;-) It looks like you are enthusiastic learners. Let’s have fun with English together!
I agree with David about Japanese students’ very little exposure to English too (English at all, let alone natural English). Stephen Krashen’s theory sounds quite convincing. It reminded me of something a friend of mine at ESL school in Canada told me. He had a classmate who spoke English very fluently without using many difficult words or phrases. The classmate was always carrying an ESL book or two (books that are re-written in easy English for learners). He told my friend that it helped him improve his spoken English because he could learn how to describe or explain things and situations in plain English, something you need to learn to become an advanced speaker and also something difficult to learn from daily short conversations. It made sense! Reading ordinary novels is good and fun but literally works don’t help you improve your English very much especially when your English isn’t so advanced. But reading ESL books can be “lots and lots of comprehensible (and usable, I might add) input”, can’t it? So I started borrowing ESL books from the library. I don’t do that in Japan now but this blog works in a similar way. And more! You can have lots and lots of comprehensible (?) OUTPUT as well.

I read this topic with interest. I've forgotten about "Book Flood", but, because tomo taught us the place of it , I could read it immediately. Thank you tomo!
In Japan, for students want to pass entrance examination and for working people want to get English qualification such as TOEIC, these are common reason of the purpose of studying English. It is easy to find a lot of 攻略本 ,like "TOEIC ○○点突破！", at book store. But It is difficult to find a foreign book, even if you find it, there are only a little numbers. We have the opportunity to read an English description book rather than to read a foreign book.
I think it is very important to do a lot of reading for acquiring language also in Japanese or English. マック has already told that. Maybe, we clearly know the meaning and usage of simple word (have, make, take, etc) by reading many books. In any case, I think that we cannot listen to native speakers of English what we do not understand it by reading.
本当に、多読は言葉の学習に一番効果的で必要な方法だと感じました。今の子供たちは（大学生でも）文章を書けない子が多いと聞きます。多分、本を読む機会が少ないのでしょうね。Stephen Krashenはスゴい方のようですね。彼の本を読んでみたくなりました。さっそく図書館に行ってみます。
PS 最後の英文は”読んで分からない英文は聞いても分からない”と言いたかったのですが、全く自信ありません。

I have got your 英語と仲直りできるドリル just today and skimmed it (of course I will read and write!). I am looking forward to finishing it. When I speak and write in English, I am always worried my sentences or phrases are natural or not. Your new book will give me a big help, definitely!
By the way, I have a question! Is that man on the cover you? 似てない！I can tell you are a good-looking guy than the illustration!

Ayako, that last sentence would be 'if you don't understand something when you read it, there is no way you will understand it when you hear it.'
Is that what you wanted to say? I was thinking more about input today, and I realized that the biggest problem with reading books for learners of English is that they all focus on written language. I think Japanese learners need to read lots of transcripts of spoken language. I have another idea for a book...!

Thanks you welcome me. I wanted listen to podcast of all on this blog. で、どこから音声があるのかわからないので、始めから読むことにしました。音節の話やいろいろ興味深い話がたくさんありました。英文は全部正確に読めるわけではないので、読めるところや興味のあるところだけ読みました。左のコラムにある過去のアーカイブの三角をクリックしたら2006年5月からのスタートだったので読めましたけど、もっと前からのスタートだったら途中で挫折していたかもしれません。
むらさきさんは'Because it takes time, you know.'といわれましたが、英文を書くのに時間がかかるって言ってるんですよね。だったら I don't know です。みなさん凄いなぁって思いながらコメントを読んでいました。あっ、それとも you knowというのは流して聞くものなのでしょうか？相手のしゃべり口調で単にそうなるだけとか？悩みます。

ところで、私も遅まきながらポッドキャストにトライしました。まだ聞けませんか？iTunesをダウンロードしましたよね？私はこの手のものにはあまり詳しくないのですが、指示に従ってインストールして、iTunesは開きましたか？
私は、Davidのポッドキャストのバナーがあるページを小さくしてiTunesの中に入れてしまい、そこからバナーをドラッグして、iTunes上でドロップしたのですが、一覧表みたいなところに「英語と仲直りできるポッドキャスト～」と出ますよね。
そこをクリックしたら勝手に始まりましたよ。パソコンのボリュームコントロールはミュートになっていませんよね。何が原因なんでしょうか？
ところが、私の場合は、どういうわけか第2回が入ってしまい、第1回はどうしても聞けません。まったく訳がわかりません。

I checked it again and write to you, but a bit of comment because I thought others who want read it to find easily. However, it seems to spend the time until you can see it. Anyway, it's strange to have forgot about it because I decided to buy English books and read them after I read the entry... Do you remenber all what David said in this blog. I learned many things here, unfortunately some of them lost...

I checked it now.
Serious has many meanings...
Serious illness/mistake/accident...so not with cold.
(Native often say something with big words(大げさに）,right? I can't say like that collectly(大げさに言っていいことの区別や、大げさにいう時の単語がわかっていない）. I need to read many books!!
And about the "weariness" and "refresh". Your ideas helped me to express what I wanted to say more. Thanks! Can I say "Onsen make us get rid of busy life"? I checked the words you pointed out in the English-ENglish.

Yes. I always think that I can't catch words which I don't know. And blank of what I catch can be extended becase I don't know when the words finish.
For example, (a) can be heard as (b) if I don't know "station".
(a) I went to the shibuya station with my friends.
(b) I went to the shibuya --------------- friends.

Hi again.
I happened to see this brog last month, and found out it's very interesting. So I am trying to read from the first page. (Every entry is very long and I have read only half .)
By the way, I found two strange comments in August 24. They seems to be phrases from Bible, but don't have any relation to the contents of the brog. And I can't understand them at all. Please check it and see if it fits.

from nowの使い方について少し気になったのでコメントします。只私の方が間違っているかも知れませんが、、、
前にDavidが下記のコメントを書いています
Because you say今から in Japanese, many people say ‘from now’ in English. For example, “I’m going to eat dinner from now”, or “From now, I’m going shopping”. In English, we would just say ‘now’.
確かに“I’m going to eat dinner from now”はおかしいと思います。何故ならbe going to～は今既になにかをしている、しようとしているという表現ですので今から(from now)はおかしいと思います。もしI will go to eat dinner from nowであればこれは問題ないのではないかと思います。
それにfrom firstは少し違和感を覚えます。From beginningの方が私にはすっと入りやすい様に思います。

I posted my comment last night, but I found it on the blog now! When I posted it, I got a message from ALC. They said "We check every comment so that we can
prevent from posting bad comments. It takes time until your comment appear on the blog."
But it took a long time, so I sent the ALC e-mail requesting. I wrote "Please, put member's comments on the blog." Did all of your comments appear on the blog?(I hope so!)
I've noticed some people have been posting bad comments. These days, the blog often gets in trouble. I'm not sure that the bad comments cause the trouble. I just hope the blog is always fine so that we can enjoy every time.

今、ポストしようとした所でアルクさんから回答を頂きました。
最近スパムコメント(不正コメント）が増えた為、スパム自動判別のランクを試験的に1つ上げたところ、普通のメンバーからのコメントが間違ってスパムとしてはじかれてしまった、とのことです。 今は判別ランクを元に戻したそうです。 皆さんのコメントは無事に掲載されましたか・・？

おじゃまして申し訳ありません！
ここのところ「コメントが表示されない」「表示されていたはずのコメントが消えてしまった」といったご指摘をいただいています。
確認いたしましたところ、皆さまからのご指摘のとおり、いただいたコメントのうちいくつかが表示されていませんでした。早速、すべて表示させるよう手配いたしましたが、もれなく表示されているでしょうか？？
スペースアルクのブログは、投稿されたコメントがスパムであるかどうかを自動的に判別し、スパムであれば表示を保留する仕組みとなっています。ここのところ、そのブロックをかいくぐって表示されてしまうスパムが増えてきたため、ブロックレベルを上げてみたところでした。そのせいで、問題なく表示されるべきであった皆さまからのコメントのうちいくつかが間違ってスパムと判断され、表示されていないという状態になっていました。
ブロックレベルは以前と同じに戻しましたので、今後はこのようなことも起こらなくなるかとは思いますが、また、コメントが表示されないなどの問題がありましたら、ぜひご指摘ください。
このブログでは、コメントの事前確認は行っていません。投稿していただいた直後に表示されるはずです。

Dear David,
Yeah, I know what you mean from my experience. Teachers in junior/high school were always speaking Japanese and all they made us do was translating Japanese into English or English to Japanese.That made us think English in Japanese. Sounds awkward,doesn't it?! So when I first went to Australia I couldn't even open my mouth coz I didn't know what to say:0
Anyway, my English isn't that bad now but still, you know what's the catch? It's just my point of view but as your language skill get better, you are expected to be like a native speaker in a way. I mean how to comunicate people, how to behave,what to say in a certain situation, and the like. I'm not saying it always happens but sometimes, in your daily life, if you are in a situation that you need to speak that language in your daily life, you might say things in your way which is hugely influenced by your first language.Then it could sound a lil strange or worse offensive even you don't mean it at all. As your language level is high enough, people might think you intended to say that. You know what I mean?
So what worries me now is learning English isn't just learning grammar, vocabulaly or expressions but getting to know the way people talk. It can be cultural matter, manner or common sense. The thing is these stuff isn't so easy to know. Have you got any idea how we can learn these things?

Is this your first comment? If so, welcome. I know exactly what you are saying - I have the same problem in Japanese. When you are a beginner, people understand and forgive you if you make mistakes, but as you get more advanced, there is s danger that people think you really meant what you said. It's a very difficult problem, and I still don't know how to solve it. I think the only thing is to watch people's reactions, and if they react strangely, ask them "Did I make a mistake? I'm sorry. Please tell me the correct way to say it."
Also, of course, a blog is a great place to learn these things because we don't know each other and people will tell you if you say something strange.

Thank you for your comment! Of course I want to remember all what David said on the blog, but it's hard, you know.(Maybe it's impossible.) Actually, I'm forgetful in daily life. By the way, the "you know" means something like “ね？” in Japanese. I think native speakers often use it. Have you hard this expression? "You know what.., I met my old boyfriend yesterday." This "You know what" means “ねぇねぇ” or “あのね” or something with no meaning.

上記のコメントのＰＳで書かれた最後の文章は、『英語と仲直りする・・・』の格好の題材になりますヨ。道で出会っても「どこに行くのですか？」という質問も禁句です。日本では極々普通の会話表現も、欧米人の間では立ち入った質問と受取られることがあり、 It's non of your business という反応をもらいますヨ。
どうするかというと、「私は○○に行く途中ですが、一緒にいきませんか？」というような間接的な表現にします。今回は、「気に入ったものが見つかりますように」とか、「混雑していると思うのでスリに気をつけて」等々言ってあげるとよいと思います。
皆さんへ：
英語学習方法について多読と多聴が最も効果的ですが、『ヒヤリングマラソン１０００時間』では、一日２４時間続けて聞いても４１日以上かかります。『１００万単語読破』（月刊雑誌が発刊された）では何日間かかるかわかりません。【ＡＬＣさんに叱かられるかな？】
最近は、『トレーニング方式』で英語を身につける方法が少しずつ普及しはじめました。トレーニング方式を始めて体験したときに、「なんと遠回りして英語を身につけたのだ！」と思いました。それほど効果的で効率よく英語（スピーキングとリスニング）が身につきます。
残念ながら日本ではこのトレーニング方式が教授方法として認知されていません。文部科学省が、確立された学問（教授方法）として承認していないので、中学、高校の英語授業が相変わらず翻訳方法なのです。
このブログ参加者の中に英語教師の方がおられたら、意見をお聞きしたいです。

そうなのですか・・？ もちろん初対面の人に聞くつもりはありませんが、「どこに行くのですか？」も禁句なのですか・・？ 知りませんでした・・。 ただ、Davidとは直接会った事はないけれど、もう半年以上もコミュニケーションをしてきたので、私としては初めの頃より仲良くなれたのでは・・と軽い冗談のつもりで書いたのですが、これも日本人的な感覚なのかもしれませんね。 色々教えて頂いてありがとうございました・・！

Thank you for your advice (of yesterday)! "I think that we cannot listen to ......" I was really unsure about this sentence. "If you don't understand something when you read it, you definitely won't understand when you hear it." Exactly this is what I wanted to say. Maybe everyone could understand my strange sentence, because I wrote it in Japanese, too. I couldn't write the sentence although it was very easy also in Japanese or English. If I did read many books of English, I could say some phrase with easy word. I'm going to try lots and lots and lots of comprehensible input!

You've said 「日本語の知らない人」in your comment, but I don’t think we say that. We would say 「日本語を知らない人」It’s complicated again.

ご指摘のyou know は、英語で文章を書くのは（一般的に日本語に比べて）時間がかかります【よね、そうではありませんか？】の【 】内のように、単にちょっとした同意を求める意味でした。
でも、Toriのコメントを拝見して、思い当たることがありました。最近問題な日本語のひとつで、初対面の人に向かって「私って○○じゃないですかー。」（たとえば、私って英語が苦手じゃないですかー。）というのがありますが、一歩間違えるとそれと同じような問題な英語になってしまうかもしれませんね。そんなときはI don’t know. と言われてしまっても仕方ないですね。使い方には気をつけなくてはいけないなと思います。

Don't worry, I laughed when I read your question. I always ask questions like that because I am very nosey. Actually, I have been shopping for presents for someone I love very much - me! Electrical shops are very dangerous places for me. Money just seems to walk out of my wallet every time I visit them. Today, I bought a PSP (Playstation Portable). Do any of you remember the game Parappa Rapper? I love it! I was totally addicted to it for about 3 months when I lived in Sapporo. Anyway, now you can get it for PSP, so I will probably not be leaving the house for a few weeks! Actually, that's not true. I am going to play with my new toy on Friday, (on the Shinkansen on the way to Tokyo to record more podcasts) and then on Saturday, I am going to take it to Suzuka and lend it to Tonari san while he is in hospital. I worry that he is going to be really bored because he can't move or do anything. I hope the PSP will cheer him up.

I thought I wondered if you could say "from first" in English because David told us about the mistakes of the way to use "from" with now before.
I think I should say "from the buginning" as you taught me. The word came up to my brain (何となく）just before sleeping yesterday. It was too late... "From the buginning" is natural words, isn't it!!
「もしI will go to eat dinner from nowであればこれは問題ないのではないかと思います。」
※人（自分を含めて）の予定を表す時には、「will」は使わないそうです。(Davidの本で確認しました。）なので、この場合、「I'm going to go eating(having) dinner now」 となるのではないかと思います。
※予定していたのではなく、今決めたことであれば、willを使えるそうです。ということは、masaの英文は間違っていないですよね。
どちらにしても、"from now" ではなく、"now"のみで今からという意味になるのではないでしょうか？
「から＝from」という日本語脳が違和感を感じてしまいますが。慣れるしかないですね。
それにfrom firstは少し違和感を覚えます。→これは、完全に間違ってますね。こんな英語聞いたことがありませんでした。

I get books some ather way. For example, from Amazon, libraly, a bargain sale of books, etc.
And I read some books twice or third or more if I like. And I sell some books after I read.
確かに読み始めの頃の出費は大きいです。まぁ、ただの読書ですし、日本語で読んでいたものが英語になっただけだと思えばさして気にもなりません、なによりそれに代えられないものが得られのであればそれで満足です。その分日本語の本はほとんど図書館で借りて済ませることが多くなりました。

Hello, stranger!
The biggest problem with English written(and spoken) by most Japanese is their poor understanding in fundamental difference between the both languages. Most Japanese usually fall into a trap called "inter-lingual transfer error". They blindly follow the circular logic of Japanese sentence without comprehending what it generally means, and then transpose Japenese words and phrases into "literal" English. Because of this, their error in English writing is sticking out like a sore thumb. Yet, they won't be aware of them until their ("native") English teachers point out. It's so pathetic to see so many students struggle at schools, because they are not even taught about the basic grammar and logic of Japanese language.

BTW, I totally agree with your concept about our far less exposure to natural and "spoken" expressions.I studied English grammar only in Japan and still need to revise my knowledge to be able to use it in the natural and understandable ways. I've started studying about English-Japanese business translation. I once again realized things are conceived quite differently in English from the way they are in Japanese.English learners should take more time to understand how to switch their mind to English mode of thinking. I'm just in the middle of this process, though.
I'm really looking forward to your new book-based writing practice method.
