How are you? I worked 13hours only first day. If I have to work such a long time, my body would be… I’m sure that my job is exciting, on the other hand, I have lots of stuffs I have to solve. I’m worried about them, but I’ve never felt the worrying like that. How can I explain it? I feel like that because I took one step forward in my life as you said. However, I’m annoyed how I talk and teach English to the people who have just started learning English. I didn’t expect it’s hard to do it before…
By the way, you are enough brave to go through your next turning point. You have already taken many high steps in your life. But I suppose this time is special for you. I really hope you get something special for you in America.

By the way, I love the song “I need to be in love!” I love old songs, like Carpenters, Elton John, Sting, Billy Joel, Queen, Beatles… But I don’t care the lyrics about them because I couldn’t understand…even titles, I didn’t care about them. I just listened to them. I noticed that there are lots of beautiful lyrics in this world now.
About my job, actually I’m exhausted every day. I can almost understand what the teacher said to me, but speaking what I think is different. That is big problem. And the most hardest thing is to change more simple words what he said. I study English and other stuff every day. In the truth, I’m nervous when I talk to him. I often feel like “Help me…God”. However, I have tremendous experiences in my new life.

This topic is really interesting! I’m surprised that your father taught you how you treat the women!!! That is the western father. I don’t think Japanese men do like that. It’s impossible in Japan. We are very shy people, especially between parents and children.
Anyway, I’m trying to answer the question you gave us.

1, Yes, it’s true. And the Japanese women are not better how we are treated by the men than western woman if we hope that.
2,
＊ In Japan, parents tell their children to study than to date if we are junior-high school students, maybe, high school too?
＊We tend to avoid talking about love in our family. Sometimes the dating are prohibited in some clubs at schools.
＊We focus on the couples if they kiss or talk something sweet on the street. The behavior is not good manner in Japan.
(But we are getting like western people...???)

It’s quite difficult to answer it. It’s because I don’t want the men to say something romantic in Japanese. I think Japanese women can’t accept all sweet and kind things which the Japanese men do if the western men do them are O.K. What I want to say get across to you?

1. I think it is true. Not all Japanese men, but most of them, maybe.
2. I agree with you. One of the biggest differences is parents. I think it comes from cultural differences. Men didn't know how to treat women (but women knew how to treat men) because men were more important than women in Japan. So men didn't need to be a gentleman.
3. Hmm... it's difficult but..I think they need to learn that what makes women really happy. It is not about date courses or spots, fancy restaurants or cool cars. Hmm..I can't make a 5-point plan now, sorry. Please give me some time.

hmm, that's all interesting.
It seems that way but I'd say J/men are also gentlemen in a different way.

It's all only my opinion but something like this seems true,
J/guys rarely bring a bouquet or a flower at the first date.
Younger guys have been changing but still lots of guys doesn't really help their wives do household chores.
W/guys say I like you, I love you or compliment more often than J/ guys do.
It happens less with w/g,b that having no sex with their partner.
etc.

Sweet about J/ guys are...
When their g/f is in trouble, they tend to help them out until the problem is fixed.
They often enjoy shopping together.
Less curse!
J/men are used to guessing women's or others feelings.( it might be a cultural thing, but w/g,b seem to explain their feeling more directly on the spot.)
etc.

So I can't say w/men know better how to treat women than j/men.
It all depends what you expect them to do, doesn't it?
Some sort of categorization isn't really my style so I wouldn't say whatever they are but anything like Japanese is this and European is that... kinda stuff, you know what I mean??
Anyway, I'd like to know other way of seeing things so it's a interesting topic!

Long time no see, all.

I don't want to be treated like a princess but I'm glad when a men keeps me from danger, like David's father said, and opens a really heavy door for me. "a really heavy door" is key.(w)

Here are just what I think about answers.
1. I think both men and women should learn how to behave to each other. How women should be treated have changed from years ago.

2. As Michelle said. It's just cultural difference. I guess it's because of differences between chivalry and bushido. Following chivalry, they have to dedicate to women. Following bushido, obedience to their master was necessary and obedience to men was considered as women's virtue. Those ideas affect us a lot.

3. (1) Women can figure out hidden meaning from what you do or say and know more than you said. So be careful about what you should say and do.
(2) Understand women's difficulty and care about that.
(3) Women sometimes want to tell you just some storys. When a woman is in this mood, don't give her an advice. It'll annoy her.

I think those are enough. Men'll just do exactly what I write if I give them details.(w)

Tea's thought about differences between chivalry and bushido is very interesting. I agree with her. It's so true.

Here is a 5-point plan.

(1) Learn chivalry and ladies first or how to escort women.
Women are weaker than men, not mental but physical. So women sometimes need men's help.
(2) Find nice things and pay a compliment.(もっと褒める）
(3) Do (1) and (2) naturally or casually(さりげなく）.
(4) Express yourself more.
(5) Throw out 照れ or 武士道精神. Like “何も言わない美徳”

勝手なことを書きましたが(笑）、I don't think Japanese men can do it naturally. It is not easy to change old ways. Besides most Japanese people think it is snobbish. (やっぱり日本人には似合わないのかも･･?) But I want to tell my son your father's advice when he has a girlfriend.

昔、こんなセリフを聞いたことがあります。(ドラマだったか、コマーシャルだったか･･) 『女ってね、｢綺麗だね｣って言われると本当に綺麗になるのよ。』　いくつになっても褒められると嬉しいのは変わらないと思うので（容姿だけじゃなく）、日本人男性にはもっと褒め上手（喜ばせ上手？）になって欲しいな～。　お世辞ばっかりじゃ嫌だけど・・、いや、でもお世辞でも嬉しいかな・・。　う～ん、難しい女心ですね(笑)　 As Tea says, I'm also glad when a man keeps me from danger. 　平等ではいたいけど、守られたいというか、大事にされてると実感したいというか・・、そんなところです。

Hi all. Nice to join the team again.
David raises an interesting but difficult topic.
No five point plan, but as David knows, different girls also like different PHYSICAL features on men.
Some like mascular men, some love their necks, shoulders etc.........Could it be the same about moral/behavioral traits? Afterall some expectations go back to ancient cultural values like "bushido" as Tea mentioned above. But then I think some gestures from men may be apreciated by women all over the world (maybe!) Women in Uganda literally belong to the kitchen! But then it's common sense that men help with "heavy" work in the home. I think all women will smile if treated like David's father suggested; if a door (heavy or not ) is opened (held) for them; if they are NOT addressed with the Japanese equivalent of おまえin public etc...Maybe!

これは本当です。（実施済み？）　また、男性も同じ。男性の場合は綺麗になるというより、誉められて頑張れといわれるとものすごい仕事や勉学をします。だから、ますますカッコよくなります。

“功名が辻”をごらんになった人はわかると思います。スト－リーや演技も素晴らしかったけれど、誉めるのがうまい内助の功で、一豊は大名まで出世しました。

子供を育てるときも一緒です。アメリカでは誉めながら子供を育てるが、日本では叱りながら育てると言われています。納得できます。子供を誉めると、喜んでますます一生懸命やります。

Now I train to make conversation in English. It’s very hard to do it more than I expected. I don’t know how I keep going to the conversation when a student ask me about the word which I don’t know. That's right! 昨日帰りながら「人によるのよね」と考えちゃいました。 So, I knew I should comment again about this, but I wonder what to say... Uhhhn

例えばなのですが "石原軍団なら許せる"けど"たけし軍団はムリ"とか。それから、自分がそういう相手が好きかどうかにもよります。ということで、結局はお互いの要素で決まるということでしょうか（＾＾） 「相手によって決まる」とか、「その行動を受ける自分で決まる」などと思ってしまうところが、日本の文化にはないものなのだなぁと改めて実感するところでした。

The woman replied. And the Japanese subtitles read 「I love you.よりお皿を洗ってもらいたいわ。」

Vick－Nice to hear from you! Yes, you are right. All women will smile if men treat them like David's father. I don't know much about young Japanese people nowadays but I think Japanese men are not that bad. My husband also help me with heavy work or high-place work. He open a door for me if my hands are full. Yes, it is common sense. I think most Japanese men escort their girlfriends home, but I'm not sure if they always wait until their girlfriend are inside the house before they leave. It may be a little thing but I think it can be a big difference. I think Western men know the little things well.(I'm not sure if it is true. Because I have never seen Western men.) As Murasaki says, it might be just a “habit”. Even if so, I think it is a wonderful habit. They can make women smile naturally. I think all women will smile if they realize that men taking good care of them even if it is just a little thing.
By the way, about being addressed “おまえ”, I don't care it at all if it sounds sweet. Like “ばかだな、おまえは･･”. “ばか” and “おまえ” are bad words but the ones sometimes sound sweet for women. I don't like to being addressed “おい、おまえ！” But when “おまえ” sounds sweet, I feel like the man is close to me. Did I get meaning across? It's hard to explain.. I need the sound file!

Why there are greate differences between Japanese and Korean?? I noticed that differences when I watch "韓国ドラマ". We are same nation, aren't we? But in Korea, it seems usual that "デートの時は彼女の荷物(バッグ)を持つ" and they often say "I love you". I think it's realy usual thing for Korean People. And I think it is a secret of explosive popularity of "韓流".
As a matter of fact, most of Japanese women(especially 40s ～ 60s) want to be treated like "韓流", aren't they(we?)?? If the assumption(仮定) is right, most of Japanese women want Japanese men to be more gentle and more romantic. and maybe i want it, too............

And I have a question.
日本人(especially young people)はおもしろいことを書いたり、照れてたり、まるくおさめたいときなんかに"(笑)"や"ｗ"を文末によく使います。英語にも同じような表現はあるのでしょうか？どなたかご存知の方、教えてください。お願いします。

"lol" means "laugh out loud." In Japanese it would be more like 爆笑. But that is the English equivalent of 笑, I think, nami.

Hi all!

I think Japanese men don’t know how to treat women in Western way. It comes from cultural difference as someone said previously.
But their minds are gentle same as Western men.
I want to show you a story of a son of my friend.
He was a little boy, 4 or 5 years old. He used to enjoy playing with little boys and little girls together, some of them ware younger than him. One day, he rushed in toward his mother and started to cry while playing with friends. His mother explained to me why 　he was tearing. The reason was she always said to him that he should treat tenderly girls and younger friends both boy and girl. At that time he fill angry because of something happened like a girl or a younger boy took his toy, but he remembered his mother’s advice which I mentioned above, so he knew he should be patient, but he couldn’t stop to cry. He was just little boy. It was cute, wasn’t it? It was more than 15 years ago. I haven’t seen him for a long time, but I’m sure he is growing up a young gentleman in his 20’s
I want to say that Japanese parents give their kids lot of advice about being human in good manner, not about dating.

Not only women but also men would smile and fell nice if they were treated tenderly. This is a good point for having good relationship. I totally agree with マック. It's a nice suggestion!! Thank you,マック.

Good morning! How are you doing? I've got the Billy Joel CD yesterday. To my surprise, there were lots of songs I've heard! "Just The Way You Are", "An Innocent Man", "Piano Man", "The Stranger", "The Longest Time"... I didn't know those are Billy Joel's songs. I don't understand the lyrics well, but his voice and the sound of piano make me feel good and comfortable. "This Night" は入っていなかったの聞いてないのですが、I loved it! When I was listening to the CD last night, my husband were back from work. He asked me "Whose songs are you listening?" "Billy Joel." I said. "Billy Joel? 俺の青春時代だ！" ...I didn't know he was listening to Billy Joel's songs when he was young. He looked very tired when he got home yesterday. But after listening to the CD, he was in a good mood. Maybe the songs reminded him of the good old days. I was grateful to Billy Joel last night.
By the way, it is a maintenance day today. So we can't access the blog from 10a.m. to 6p.m. I can't wait till the maintenance is done!

“おまえ”、ダメ～？　もちろん呼びかけじゃなくて、会話の中で出てくる場合なんだけど。。　何て言ったらいいのかな・・。　もちろん立場は平等なんだけど、好きな人とかに“おまえ”って言われると、何となく他人じゃないというか、近い感じがするというか、包容力を感じるというか、・・う～ん、うまく言えない・・。　これって私だけかしら・・?　呼ばれるのは名前の方がいいです。　でも子どもが生まれてからは「ママ」と呼ばれる方が多いかな～。　最初は「私はあなたのママじゃない」って反論してたんだけど、もうこっちの方が慣れちゃったかな～。　私も「パパ」って呼ぶほうが多いし。。　たまに名前で呼ばれるとドキッとしちゃいます・・（＾＾;）
ところで、お仕事大変そうだけど・・大丈夫？　教えるのって難しいですよね。　でも教えながら学べることがたくさんありそうな気がします。　最初から上手な人なんていませんよ～。　頑張ってね(＾_-)-☆

Hi Everyone,
You’ve got interesting comments about men & women. So I’ll just say one thing.
I read “Why Men Don’t Listen and Women Can’t Read Maps” too, and found that I’m more like a man than a woman by its definition. Actually, a friend of mine lent it to me, and she was pretty much “woman” and we didn’t really understand each other although we were close and we were well aware of our differences. We had a good laugh about it after we read the book. What I’m saying is that, except for social or cultural gender issues, it’s not just about a man & woman but it’s more about two different human beings, only in a romantic relationship or marriage it could be more difficult because it’s usually more intimate, intense and exclusive (and, of course, biologically different! ;-)

1 Yes, it is true. Most of the Japanese men don’t know about women at all.
2 That is because they don’t have opportunity to learn how to treat women.
3 I cannot make a 5-point lesson because I don’t even know what it means by gentleman. That’s because I hardly see any gentlemen around me! Please tell me what gentlemen do!! Do they give me flowers? Do they open the door for me?? Do they do anything else???

It’s hard for me to STUDY English. So I guess it’s even harder to TEACH English, in particular, to novices.
I remember watching an episode ofちびまるこちゃん, in which ちびまるこちゃん　goes to English school. In class an English teacher asked all the students, “Do you have a pet?” But the students got it something like 「どういうハブがペットに良いか？」

m.n, it’s been only a week since you started working there. If you could do it perfectly from the beginning,世の中のベテラン教師たちは全員クビになってしまいますよね。新人を雇った方が人件費が安く済みますから。どの職業もそうだと思いますが、教師は日々の実践の中で技術を磨いていくものではないでしょうか。だからm.nならきっと大丈夫ですよ。来年の今頃には最初はあ～だった、こうだったと笑えるようになっているでしょう。

Tomo, your son is so cute!!! I can’t stop smiling. I have same idea as your son said “Girls are stronger than me ( boys ).” Especially little girls can speak better than little boys. Little girls speak like little mothers. 女の子のお喋りは”おませさん”ですよね。
Men are stronger than women in physical, but women are stronger than men in mental. 母は強しともいいますし... Who knows....

I can’t stop laughing over 「I love you.よりお皿を洗ってもらいたいわ。」 which むらさき said. Thank you むらさき for introducing such a funny story. But it is easy to know French woman would complain if her husband washed dishes without “I love you.” Don’t you think so? I realized we women are so difficult to treat.
And other むらさき’s comments make me laugh too. むらさき, you have a great sense of humor!!　素晴らしい！！

I enjoyed to reading our team’s comments regarding the topic, and realized our own Japanese culture. Thank you for giving a good chance to think of it. But I’m afraid the title “女性の取り扱い説明書” would make someone feel uncomfortable. I know you don't mean any harm and you just translate “how to treat women” into Japanese. Would you please understand this is a just advice for you? “取り扱い説明書” seems for machine. So the title looks 女性 is a machine. Now we have a similar discussion about Japanese Health Minister Yanagisawa…..
So here is my idea. The title is “ 英国式紳士の作法” or “女性との欧米式おつきあい” なんてどうでしょうか?
When I speak English, I sometime worry my English makes someone feel bad mood. It is a difficult point for me. But learning is so fun!!

How are you doing today?? Today, I'm going to write my experience about my English Class.
I'd been a member of English Class in my 11 and 12 years old. I joined the class later than other students. So, I can't keep pace with the other students "最初の頃", but I remember only somthing joyful. Because My teacher was a very very cheerful woman. I leaned a few words (ex) "girl", "boy" "cat", "dog", "apple" and so on. And, I leaned "I am", "It is", "I hove a", "Do you have a" などの簡単な出だしを。Only them. But それで十分でした。 My teacher gave me several easy question, and I could answer them without "ためらい"とか"おそれ". いつのまにか単語も覚えていたし、文章も分かるようになっていました。「楽しい」と思えたからこそなんとかなったのかなーと思っています。中学校に入ってからの勉強はまたﾍﾞﾂﾓﾉでしたけど（＾＾；
それから、英語習っていた頃は "hangman" で単語覚えました！みんな盛り上がって楽しかったです!!

あーー。。
今日はこここまでで帰らなきゃ！半端な内容&英語でごめんなさい！

Actually, I failed to making my first class. I taught English to 5 and 8 years sisters yesterday. I was so nervous. I felt like the time passed so slowly. They were getting boring. Everything I did made worse. However, I found how the difference between my teacher who is Japanese and I and learn many things. I will have many chances to learn how to teach English next week. I’m trying to get skill of it. I understood what you said, but the student would not come the class if I made the students happy and fun. がんばりますよ！「どういうハブがペットに良いか？」は傑作ですね（笑）緊張が、クラスを単調に、つまらなくしてしまうので、笑えるクラスを作るようにがんばりまーす。
