America

Hi Team,

Thanks for taking care of the blog while I was away. I missed you all, and I am glad to be back. Thanks also for doing the homework. I will explain why I needed those things in the near future. Actually, I just wrote something about my life for my students using only the 1k and 2k words. I will send it to ALC and ask them to put it up so that you can read it if you want to. If you could give me feedback, that would be very useful. Is it interesting? Is it easy to understand?

Anyway, let me tell you about my trip to America…

The first thing was that I had a big shock at the airport. The security checks take soooo long, and I was selected for a random security interview. It was very stupid:

Airline person: What do you do?
Me: I’m a teacher.
Airline person: Why are you going to America?
Me: For a teaching conference?
AP: What are you going to do there?
Me: Talk to lots of other teachers.
AP: What about?
Me: Teaching!

Do you know the word ‘pointless’? It means 無意味. This check was completely pointless. I don’t think many English teachers living in Japan are likely to be terrorists!

Anyway, I finally made it to America. It was the first time I had been to the States since I was a university student, so it was quite exciting. I noticed some really good things and some really bad things, and today, I want to share my thoughts with you.

Good things:

People are very, very friendly. Everywhere you go, people talk to you, so you never feel lonely. Americans love talking to people, and they don’t care how old you are or whether you are a man or a woman. Service in restaurants is excellent, and waiters and waitresses ask your first name and then say, “Can I get you anything else David?” They even bring you free refills of drinks if you ask. It made me realize that in Japan, people don’t really talk to each other. In shops and restaurants, people only use 決まり文句、and 警護、but in America, they talk to you like a friend. I like the American idea of service!

The food in restaurants is fantastic, and there is so much of it. When you ask the waiter or waitress about something on the menu, they always know the answer. In Japan, they always say, 少々を待ちください。ちょっと聞いて来ます。

When people in America open a door, they always check to see if someone is coming behind them. They will hold it open even if they have to wait a few seconds. I have noticed that Japanese people almost never do this.

Bad things

Americans have terrible, terrible manners when it comes to mobile phones. In almost every seminar, someone’s mobile phone rang. In one seminar, the main speaker’s phone rang! People use mobile phones everywhere – in the streets, in restaurants, everywhere. And they always speak in a very loud voice. I thought they were very rude.

Many Americans smoke while they are walking along the street, so it is not nice for people who don’t like smoking (for example, me!)

There are a lot of very, very fat people in America! Some of them are absolutely huge. I have never seen people as fat as that before. The strange thing was that people seem to be either very fat, or have a really good body. Actually, I saw a book in an American bookshop called, "Japanese women don't get fat". It was a book about Japanese food and Japanese cooking for Americans who want to lost weight.

Anyway, I think that is enough for today. I have a sore throat from being on a plane for too long, so I can’t do a recording today. Let me know if you have any questions about my American trip.

I enjoy your post! It's interesting.
But "警護"は"敬語"ですよね？
And I think Japanese waiter or waitress often uses "丁寧語" if they work at other than "高級レストラン". ( Unfortunately Most of Japanese waiter or waitress cannot speak correct "丁寧語" or "敬語". )

Really?? I do that, and I know many people do same thing. It might depend on "土地柄" or "年齢" or (of course)"人柄" ??

About smoking at street, I hate that!! I DON'T LIKE SMOKE. And I fear if a lighted cigarette touch a little child. It's difficult that we can notice little children if they are near us, when we are in crowd!
In Fukuoka, "歩きタバコ" is prohibited under the City Statute. It sounds good, but some people break the Rule...

Hi David,

I enjoyed reading your American trip. It seemed like you had a good time.
The security interview was really pointless but funny. I imagined the scene and laughed.(I don't think it was funny for you, though.)
About the waiter or waitress. Really? Do they call you your first name and talk to you like a friend? I can't believe that, but I loved it! That sounds good. But if Japanese waiters or waitress called me my first name in Japan, I would feel strange and uncomfortable. I can accept(maybe welcome) people from other countries do it, but can not accept that Japanese people do the same thing.(変かな・・？） And you are right, we Japanese people don’t really talk to each other in shops and restaurants. How about in your country?

About your writing "Where are you from?", it was very interesting. I have seen the movie "Braveheart" and heard that there is a difficult problem in the UK, but I didn't know the movie was a real story and there were that many countries. It sounded like that Scottish, English, Welsh, and Northern Irish people were all British but all different, they were from different countries. Is there still a difficult problem in their hearts? Many many years ago, we also had many countries in Japan. And many people tried to bring the countries under their rule.(天下統一） But it sounds like British is different from Japan. I got a feeling that Wales, Scotland, England and Northern Ireland are united as one country, but they still have their own country.
This kind of topic is difficult to write in English, maybe even in Japanese because I'm not good at the world affairs. So it was a good study, thanks!

By the way, do you speak Welsh? I'd like to hear your Welsh. Anything is fine, including the village's name, of course(笑)

---“There are a lot of very, very fat people in America!”--- You’re right! It’s only natural because they drink a bucket size of Coke and eat a table size of pizza.
When I went to a super market in the U.S. for the first time, I felt like a dwarf. Because everything (a pack of potato chips, a hunk of meat, a container of ice cream…) is BIG, BIG, BIG!!

I liked reading your document file.
But I think ... "Where are you from ?" is the most standard noncommittal　question to fill in the time　for most of Japanese.

If you order to some Japanese it,
They will not be able to speak more.

Incidently, When I was elementary school student I learned ‘Igirisu’ called 「グレートブリテンおよび北部アイルランド連合王国」.

BTW, As for Igirisu, the word of Portugal "Inglês" spoke with a local accent.

I know American people are really friendly. They like to talk.
I go to Hihg School, and My English teacher always talking in class. All the time.
But we sometimes don't understand, what he is saying.So sometimes class being quiet, but he still talking.

It's nice to have you back here. I enjoy your comments, and I even more enjoyed your short article of "Where are you from." Although I knew that the UK has four areas, I didn't know that each area has its own strong character. Now I feel sorry that I didn't visit Scotland and Wales, since I visited England many times on business and pleasure in the past.

My suggestion, if I may.
If you reply "I am from Igirisu", you can go away without hussles. Most of us do not distinguish the UK into four areas. Yet, you are not giving a wrong answer.

How are you all doing?
It's been a while since I last posted a comment.
Actually I just submit one recently but ALC seemed to decide not to publish that, unfortunately.

Anyway, I went through David's thought about the states.
I know what you mean!!
I sometimes feel I "should" be negative and unfriendly to others in Japan.
Don't take me wrong, I don't mean offence any of you at all and it is true that I really feel so many Japanese are always negative.
What I mean is something like they often say what they cant't do well or how badly something went when they tried something, etc.

People look as if they don't really pay any attention to others if they don't know each other.
They seem not to have much to say or talk.
They also look as though they don't know much about out of their own world.....
On top of that, many of them are kinda skinny.
If my comments offended, I'm sorry but that's the way I often feel.

Of course there are good things about Japan like any other country.
I don't think I need to explain that, do I!!!
Anyway, good to hear David had a great trip.

Welcome back, David! I enjoyed reading your comment about the U.S. and your essay about where you are from.

I didn’t know Wales has its own language that people still speak daily. Does Scotland have its own too? As for Ireland, I once had an Irish English teacher from the Republic of Ireland. I was surprised in the opposite way that although she learned Irish at school, her first language was English and that young people don’t speak Irish in their daily life.
I remember learning the word “England” as イギリス in junior high. That’s the sourse of your problem, David. We were taught “Britain” and “the United Kingdom” later in school but that’s not right. They should have taught young students such basic things like the proper way of calling the country and its background in the first place, because they were learning “English” after all!! I don’t know about what they teach in junior high these days but I sure hope they teach these things now.

I agree with you wholeheartedly on this point! Okay, maybe I don’t really want to be on a first name basis with a waiter I meet for the first time but I really like the human interactions they have with their customers. And of course, ordinary people talk to each other in a friendly manner even if they don’t know each other. I love that. I wish we were like that in Japan too.

> Random security interview
I was once picked for a random security check on baggage, not an interview, when my friend and I traveled in the United States. Actually, my friend was picked next time so we ended up going through the inspection twice! We wondered how they chose people, because none of them looked suspicious. We thought maybe they were picking people who came to the airport well in time. Baggage check must be done before boarding and they don’t want to delay the flights, right? ;-) Anyway, the inspection officers were very friendly and they made small talk with us as if entertaining the passengers who were forced to wait during the inspection was their line of work.

David - I have a question about a phrase you used in the entry. You wrote “People use mobile phones everywhere – in the streets, in restaurants, everywhere.” Do you use the phrase “in the streets” the same way as “on the street”? Are there any differences?

Iun – Of course, I remember you! Maybe I haven’t talked to you but the first time I dropped in here, they were talking about your essay on your trip abroad. I’m glad to have you back :-)

Murasaki – I liked your expressions about American size! “A bucket size of Coke … a table size of pizza … felt like a dwarf … “ I’m going to steel them ;-)

Hi, David and everyone;
I found David’s writing very interesting, clear and comprehensive.
It’s a very difficult question, indeed! I’ve learned a lot about UK, and Ireland from literature, films and news. That’s never enough, though.
The writing reminds me of a story about a woman who has 4 passports; issued by Macedonia, former Yugoslavia, Slovenia and Croatia.
She was born to a Macedonian and a Croatian in former Yugoslavia. Married to a Slovene and had lived in Beograd (Serbia) for more than 30 years. Is she Yugoslav, by the way? There’s no such country any more because of dissolution.
I’ve learned that the question “Where are you from?” could be sometimes not so simple and heart-wrenching.

Hi David

I imagined how much you had fun in America. And your comment about America is very interesting. I have thought before people from U.K and America was same because they speak English. I know I was foolish. But the difference is like Chinese and Japanese, right? I mean we look similar, but completely different. Do you understand what I said? So your (from Wales) talking about America is quite new for me. I can see not only the difference America and Japan, but also America and Wales(British, too).

BTW, I didn’t know the most of things about where you are from. I know about Ireland that they have problem like about IRA. I watched the movie about it. But I had no idea of Britain. I’m watching “Braveheart” to know and understand about your country(countries) well. However, I’m envy of you are very proud of your country, Wales. I can’t be proud of where I’m from.

I'm a Japanese female who lives in NY with my American hubby! Though I checked this site occasionally, I've never posted my comment before. But I found your interesting subject about your American trip, that reminded me of something....... Like I said we live in NY, last summer, one of my Japanese friends and her British husband, John, visited here for a couple weeks. Keep in mind they live in Japan for a long time, and my hubby has been to Japan twise. The other day, we had dinner at some nice restaurant. My hubby and John talked about Japan and their countries at that time. My hubby said, "Unlike U.S., Japanese taxi has an automatic door, and some taxi drivers looked like a butler that they wore white gloves. Needless to say, their servise were great. What's amazing to me was that we didn't even have to give them tips." And John said, "Yeah, that's right, they're pretty nice. Look, when I got back to U.K., I went to some bar, cuz I was SO thirsty. And at a counter, I tried to order a beer, but before I order, a bertender(a berman) said to me, "What do you want!" Since I've got really used to Japanese politeness for a long time, when I heard it in my own country, I was EXTREMELY disappointed. How rude he was!!." My hubby said, "I hate to say it, but most of American people are sometimes same, too." Both guys was laughing. So for a long long explanation, I think you are lucky, you could get a nice service at a restaurant you went. Of course, there are a lot of great restaurant here, but sad to say, some of them are still not. So my hubby and I really miss Japanese politeness once in a while. BUT don't get it wrong, we love American considerations as well, like holding a door for others. (also British too ?)

And you're right, there are a lot of obese people here. The cause is obviously bad food habits. Everytime I saw a woman who has a huge butt, I wonder where they get those huge size pants!!

Welcome back! It sounds you had good time in the U.S.

I agree with you about American's friendliness and the custom of door.
Some people from here are not friendly like Americans, but most of them do hold a door for a person behind them as well.
And also I like about Americans and British saying "thank you" more often than Japanese. I think Japanese tend to say "domo". It has a meaning of thank you, but I prefer to say "arigatou" instead of "domo".
On the other hand, I like Japanese acting consciously with other people's feelings. I mean, they hesitate to do some things which could bother other people; speaking loudly in a public or during a night.
I see soo many people around here don't care about other people. For exaple, I've seen some people playing football front of my room 3 in the mornig!! And many people make so much noise by talking, playing music and so on.

If I remember correctly, I think British people say "in the street" and American people say "on the street".

Very interesting story about the Yugoslavia.
(My study focuses on Kosovo conflict).
The UN envoy stated that independence is the only viable option for Kosovo, and the Secretary-General sent the report to the Security Council in this week. I don't think Russia would buy it, but it is a step considering the failures of dialogue between Belgrade and Kosovo.

Nowadays there are not many active IRA.
Beginning of this week, Ian Paisley, leader of the Protestant DUP, and Gerry Adams from Sinn Fein sat on same table and agreed a power sharing. It is a historic change!!


BTW, I'm going to N.Ireland from tomorrow as a study trip. (And I have to get up early as we're driving & taking a ferry to get there!) I will meet some local NGO workers, politicians and police officers. I'm excited about it!
But I MUST finish my essay before I leave.

Hi all.
Long time no see.

That's interesting! I just read a children's book whose scene was in Wales two weeks ago. I found there were fewer vowels in Whelsh words than English ones and lots of names in the book start with Gwy or Gwi. Do they sound like "グィ"? Do they mean something common? I thought. It's hard to imagine how they are pronounced, isn't it? Especially for Japanese!
Prince Charles is Prince of Wales, right? Can he speak Welsh as well?

And about countries. I used to believe that "イギリス人" is from England. I'm so embarrassed!! I think that was because both people from England and language which "イギリス人" speaks are called English. Actually, none of British people I met said "I'm from the U.K." or "I'm from Britain." They just said a name of cities or countries where they'd lived. Thinking the U.K as separated countries remainds me of "King Lear". How about you all?

Thank you for your message お忙しいのに！日本語で申し訳ありません。まだまだ修行が足りないので、英語脳がすぐにストライキを起こしてしまって．．．。
コソボ紛争を研究なさっているのですね。ニュースを見ているだけでは理解できないし、少し興味もあったので、ユーゴについての本をいくつか読みました。
きりがないので簡単に切り上げますが、改めて国家や民族とは何なのか、宗教や言語がどのようにかかわっているのか、いろいろ考えさせられました。
よく、「私は地球市民です」なんて言う人がいますが、それはちゃんと自分の国があり、パスポートを持ち、identityもしっかり確立している人のたわごとだと思えます。そうでなければ、民族自決、国家建設のためになぜ何十年も文字通り血みどろの争いをするでしょうか？
Keyは紛争解決などのお仕事をなさるのでしょうか？ヨーロッパの紛争地域については、日本（人）は欧米諸国と違い、直接の利害関係も、過去の汚点もあまりないので、理想的な仕事かもしれませんね。どんな道に進まれることになってもご活躍をお祈りします。

チップのお話はとても面白いですね。アメリカやヨーロッパその他のチップ制度のある国で、レストランのサービスが良いのは、チップをたくさんもらうためだと思っていましたが、日本ですばらしいサービスを受けてもチップを渡さないことには考えが及びませんでした！
確かにごく普通のレストランでも、日本の良いレストラン（必ずしも高級という意味ではありません）はとてもfriendlyだし、サービスも細やかですばらしいですね。私のオフィスの周りにもそういう所がたくさんあります。

Thank you for　answering me(*^_^*)
Yes, you're right. As for tips, when I heard this episode, I thought I have to be proud of my country, seriously. When my hubby visited Japan, we stayed at Japanese regular hotel. As we was about to get into there, two porters approached us, and they took care of all of our luggages. As soon as we arrived our room, the porters came and left our luggages promptly. It's typcal for me, but my hubby was really impressed and moved, and he felt sorry for them at the same time.
What do you think he did after that, むらさき？
Guess what?

He gave a tip to them by force, though they said "NO". On top of that, by $$$DOLLER$$$. At first, they hasitated to take it, but they could not refuse custmer's offer. I felt sorry for them in a different way(T_T)　But come to think of it, it might have been good to give them for a tip by dollar, cuz if he gave YEN for a tip, it would be like an allowance for Japanese people, not a tip.
What do you think?

I forgot to give you my feedback on the English of your essay in my last post. This is just my personal opinion but I think it would be a very good reading material for lower intermediate to intermediate learners. It is written with simple words but I don’t think it’s too easy for Japanese English learners to understand it, probably because the English is very English (you know what I mean??) and sentences are fairly long and also because it is about complicated issues.

We had another Pink before and I thought at first “Oh, she’s back!” but you were a different Pink, right? I’m glad to have a new member! Thank you for sharing your stories with us. Yeah, I feel proud when people say nice things about Japan :-)

You are right! There are a lot of nice friendly servers and clerks in Japan too. And I hope they never adopt tipping in Japan and I don’t want them to come to expect tips from foreign customers either. Don’t tip in Japan, foreigners!

I was planning on doing another entry yesterday, but things were a bit crazy at work, and I just didn't have any time. Michelle, I don't think that ALC ever delete comments unless they are obscene, but there are sometimes problems with the computer system. One of my comments disappeared once too.
Pink, welcome to the blog! You must have lots of interesting stories to tell being married to an American and living in N.Y. Can we do a feature on your experiences sometime?
I'm at work today, but I'm going home now. I want to go out for dinner, but I have no one to go with - poor me!

PS I hate tipping! The fact that we don't have to tip anyone is the best thing about living in Japan. I don't agree that service in restaurants in Japan is good though. Most waiters and waitresses are just students working part-time, and they don't know how to do anything except follow the 'manual'. This might be a good topic for discussion...

I hate tipping, too. I wish this system was abolished. Unfortunately, it's a fact that if the system of tip was gone, a lot of people could not earn enough money that they live in U.S.
To me, tiping is ridiculous , but to them, it's crucial and indispensable. No matter what I think, as long as I live here, I have to do it. I don't have a choice(T_T)

Hi! I have good news today. My new house is finally complete! We started to move our stuff little by little. But there are still some problems, and I asked the builder to fix them. David, the story about your trip in America was very interesting. I like to hear about travel abroad and differences between countries. But I agreed with nami and Kay about holding doors. Japanese people didn’t used to hold doors for others, but they do nowadays. But I admit that they don’t do it if they have to wait. As for waiters, I think Japanese employees are average both in a positive and negative way. Few waiters are really professional. Instead few waiters are rude. In America, I guess there is an extreme difference between employees who are well-trained and not. I’ve heard that if you are slow to pay at a checkout, some cashers impatiently click the resisters with their nails, chewing gums. It never occurs in Japan. Even untrained part-time workers know how to behave to their customers. That’s why I think Japanese employees are average. I’m sorry if I mix up waiters and clerks.
I also like your essay “Where are you from”. I was able to read it through without a stop, even though the theme was serious. There seem to be many people who know about this problem in this blog. It’s probably because people who are interested in English have more knowledge about Britain than other Japanese. But I didn’t know Welsh is completely different from English. I got interested in Wales but I’m not confident about traveling there where even English people get in trouble. I tried to find a website that shows the pronunciation of the village name, but I couldn’t. Did anyone find one? By the way, I think the best way to make Wales well-known in Japan is to take part in the soccer World Cup 本戦! I wonder why each country of the U.K. can independently participate in the soccer World Cup.
