I was wondering if anyone would anwer to it.
It was a big challenge for me.
I admire David's way of learning foreign langage. I think many Japanese people have been struggling to improve their English. I've been spending a lot of time and money to it. But still I can't be satisfied with my English ability.
Talking about spending money, one of my friend takes English private lessons from a foreigner . It costs 4000 yen per one hour!!! How come it costs a fortune? Or is it helpless? She says she
needs opportunity to speak English in order to improve her speaking skill. I undersand what she says. But are there any good way of improving speaking sill? Please let me know if you have any good idea.

The only way to improve your speaking is to speak. It doesn't matter if the person you talk to is a native speaker or not. When you reach a point where it is difficult to go further, you need to read, write, and try to do different things with the language. You need to notice how language is used and try to use the patterns you notice yourself. Here is my re-writing. Check it against your original comment.

「多くの日本人がずっと、自分の英語を上達させることに必死になっている」という英訳は、単なる現在形で表せるのですね。
現在完了進行形（っていうのかな？）を使わないのですか？現在完了進行形（あってるこの言い方？）は、どんな時に使いますか？

Hmm, it is difficult to translate 仕方がない。When you are trying to say something in English, it is important to learn the difference between speaking English and translating Japanese into English. That is one of the reasons why comprehensible input is so important. It helps you to get a feel for how the language is used. In your example, I think the closest expression would be "Maybe that's just the way it is", but I think it would be better to just forget the expression 仕方がない here and leave it out altogether. Does that help?

About gender differences, I myself am more manlike in some ways. I used to play with mini-cars rather than dolls when I was little. But I think there are some different tendencies in behavior or way of thinking that man and women naturally have. You could say it’s just about sex and this might be an extreme example, but most women fall in love with man and vice versa. A few people have a kind of mental disorder that they strongly feel they are the opposite sex to their biological one. I heard it is likely to be caused by a physical malfunction in their developing process when they are in their mother’s womb. I don’t mean we can stereotype people according to their genders, of course. We definitely shouldn’t allow any prejudice. But for me, the biological aspects of human mind are fascinating and I feel the wonder of the great nature in those things.

I feel your plan is wonderful for us, especially for me. I've been hesitating to ask foreigners to check (re-write) my English.

The reasons are...
1)It depends on the relationship between foreigners and me. I tended to worry whether we were friends each other or not. So I coundn't ask them to do.
2)Since I had less opportunity to write English in junior highschool, high school and university, this made me nervous to get cheked to my terrible sentenses.

But I had a chance to exchange English e-mails with Chinese students, and this changed me. I could see some "real English sentenses"! We, Japanese learn English not by using it (=experience) but by studying itself (=understand) for the entrance exams. Even though we need to practice when we learn languages, we were lacking of practice. This experience was great opportunity.
After that, I got used to writing English much better than before. But there is very big problem! My purpose to make English sentenses is NOT to know better expressions BUT whether I can make acceptable sentenses or not.
So I feel to get re-writing by foreigners these days.
I still hesitate to ask foreigners to do for me.

Have you ever been asked to check English sentenses by Japanese friends (not students) before? How did you feel at that time?

I don't think this will be so useful for people because your English is close to perfect, and also the level is very high, but here is my version anyway. (I only made 2 changes).

I don't mind being asked to check English by my students (or blog family), but I think I would get annoyed if people asked me to do it all the time. I was lucky when I came to Japan because most Japanese people were happy to help me with my studies. Here is my version of your comment.

意味不明な部分について・・・ですが、文章を書きなれるにつれて、だんだん「意味が通じればOK！」と思いながら文章を作っている自分に気づくんです。つまり時々「ヒドイ表現でも意味が通じそうだからいいかな」と自分で納得してしまっている気がして怖いんですね。そのため、誰かに添削してもらう必要がある気がしています。独学だけではいい加減になってしまっているのではないか心配・・・というbig problemに直面しています。

Hi iun,

Me neither! I don't have any friends of native speakers. And I can hardly see them in my city.(I live in a rural area.) I have never been to any eikaiwa-schools. (I didn't know that it costs so much!) I wanted to go there before and thought that I needed it for improving my English. But it was very difficult for mothers who have little children to attend an eikaiwa-school. So I had to find another way. On the charity day, I've talked with David for the first time. And it was the first time I had talked with native speakers. I think it is possible to improve your English without eikaiwa-schools, studying abroad, and spending much money. But I think we, learners need to spend much TIME for it.
What I want to say is.., you said to me before "I want to be like you", right?(Thanks!) Yes, you can, of course! If you use English in your daily life, every day. Remember? I don't have any chances to talk with native speakers except this blog. And I don't need to use English in my daily life at all. But I use it every day because I like English and want to be a better English speaker.　一緒に頑張りましょう＾＾

It's really fun to join this blog even though I am a new comer. Everyone seems to learn English enjoyably. Reading and posting comments in English is really good way to take a balance of input & output. Communicating in English with such woderful members is more useful and exciting.

If we could the same thing with our own friends, they tend to hesitate doing writing English as what I used to be.

Anyway I agree with the idea of making this blog also seen from cell phone. Younger people love to use cell phones better then older one, and they need such an interesting site to know how to improve English ability. I would like to see here not only by the computer but also by the cell phone(^^

But I have a favor to ask. When you correct our writings, please place some mark where you changed them. ×　mark, '' mark or any mark is okay. because it takes a lot of time to compare all of the two writings.

Q-chanの文とDavidのre-writeの文章をどうやったら効率よく比較できるかなぁと思って、普段から仕事で使っているソフトを私は使ってみました。改行などちょっと手を加える必要がありますが、2人の文章がどう変わったのか視覚的にも分かりやすいです。"WinMerge"といいます。検索したら日本語版を探すことが出来ると思います(フリーソフトです！)。

明日か明後日かちゃんとしたコメント書きます！そのときは"OK to re-write"と書ける様、英語で書きます（＾＾）ｖ

Hi Panda. Actually, I didn't mark the parts I changed deliberately because I think you will remember things better if you have to look carefully to find them! Also, it makes you look carefully at the correct sentences too. But maybe it is better if I mark those spots or just write up the corrections. The problem is that it takes me a lot longer to do it that way. I suggest that you read the original comment and then read my correction and see what differences you notice. Then you can go back and check more careully. In my re-writing of Tomo's comment, I will leave out the sentences that were perfect.

I think this chance to have David re-write our comments is really interesting and useful for all of us.

The readers want to improve their English, that's why they read this blog, I guess. Reading is a very good way to get input, but I don't think it is enough. Now I understand that you deliberately don’t mark the point you changed. OK, here are the sentences I’d like you to check.

My one-year-old daughter has a high fever right now. I am writing it with her on my back. She is so fat (10 kg) that my back and shoulder aches much. But I can’t but do that, because she doesn’t sleep sound and cries when I lay her on her bed.

We are getting used to our new life. My husband likes his job（職場、と言いたいです）. My son is in soccer team and enjoys his new school life. My older daughter made friends (most of them are boys!!). Our new house is not very new, but we got all the wallpaper changed and repaired the broken parts. It is very big compared with the previous one. I like it because I can find a quiet place when my kids are playing or quarreling loudly.

It seems that my baby daughter sleep sound on my back now. I am going to sleep, too.

The secret of the method? It's very simple. The most important thing for learning English(and most other things) is your strong feeling "WANT". And there is only one way to improve your English, and that is by trying your best with the English you have now. That's what David taught me(us). Hi, everyone!
This blog is really helpful to English learners. I noticed that ordinary blogs seem to be a one-way-communication. Someone post his/her messages to the general public and a few people post comments. Although in this blog David post his interesting and useful messages to the general public, quite a few people post comments with replying each other. So everyone can feel warm atomosphere. (In this case, "everyone" include people who post messages and who only read them.) I used to read other blogs a lot, but I could find the blog like here nowhere.

Now I feel that learning English is not so complicated than I imagined before. I used to be worried what to do when I found so many books for English study at bookstores and there were a lot of methods.
But "simple is best" seems to be true in all ages. Just memorize words, phrases and sentences, then try to use them.（習うより慣れよですね。） After finding this blog, I'm very happy to learn English and spending more time in learning it! Thank you everyone! I want to join here longer:-)

Hi Panda. Thanks for your feedback. I hope no one is worried about the time it takes me to check comments. On average, it takes me less than a minute. Also, this is connected to an idea I have for my next book, so I am really doing market research to find out whether people think this kind of study is useful or not.

I went for a long ride on my bike today. I found some beautiful cottages out in Gifu. A new friend of mine and I are planning to have a party somewhere in June with all our friends and their friends' friends, so I think this might be a great place to do it. Actually, the aim of the party is to find a wife for Tonari san, but I haven't told him about that yet!

I will try to do a new entry tomorrow.

I think Panda said it right. When you use the words “get” or “have” in this way, it means it is someone else that actually did it. In other words, when you pay someone to do something like haircut or repair, you should say “I had my hair cut” or “I got my watch repaired” in English while it’s common for us to say “髪を切った” or ”時計を修理した” in Japanese. I realized not a long time ago that’s the main point of this “have (get) something --ed” or 使役用法 thing and I don’t think anyone pointed it out to me in school :-(

I had interesting explanation about 使役動詞 before.

We sometimes say 「髪切ったの～」 in Japanese. But this is funny... if I translate this into English, 'I cut my hair.'　->This means "自分で切りました"...Oh...でもそういう人も時々いると思います。
This must be 「（美容師さんに）髪切ってもらったの～」->'I had my hair cut.'

Another example is 「昨日歯を抜いた」->'I pulled my tooth yesterday....Oh...ものすごく痛そうです。麻酔なんてなさそうです。ペンチを自分の口にくわえた痛々しい姿が頭をよぎります。・・・。
Actually I often hear someone say like this. But "歯を抜いたのは歯医者さん", so we have to say 「昨日はを抜いてもらった」->'I had my tooth pulled.'

When I heard those examples, I imagined the scene in my head. I couldn't stop laughing when I had taugh the story of "tooth".

I had my purse stolen.I stole my purse.
THis is also the same thing.「私は泥棒ではありません☆しかも自分の財布を盗むの？」

I really felt confused when I learned 使役動詞 in my old higuschool, but those examples make me understood 使役動詞 easier!

If these examples are wrong, please let me know!
I've believed in those explanations for long time.
