Injuries and accidents

Hi Team,

Did you enjoy the weekend? I was working both days, but I went out on my bike for a couple of hours yesterday evening. I have just bought a book about techniques for racers, so I’m itching to get back on the circuit again.
I just read Tomo and Anne’s challenge reports. It is really interesting for me to see what you pick up from the book. Like Tomo said, sometimes it is surprising how easy it is to say things in English. I really believe that this kind of study is the most effective for Japanese people who have studied English but can’t use it. I hope lots more people will buy the book and actually try the tasks.
Anyway, here is my idea for today’s topic…

This week’s topic is going to be injuries and accidents. I chose this for two reasons: I have lots of experience of this subject, and I think that you will learn a lot of new vocabulary if we talk about it. Anyway, here are some of my stories.

I have had many accidents and been injured many times in my life. I think boys in particular do stupid, dangerous things when they are young (and even when they become adults!), and I was no exception. When I was a child, I used to like playing soccer. I was usually the goalkeeper, and I sprained both my thumbs lots of times through getting hit by the ball and the other players. Another thing I used to like doing was stunts on my bicycle. I remember one day a friend and I decided that it would be a good idea to tie a rope between two bicycles and take turns in towing each other. It was not a good idea! When I was being towed, the rope got caught up in the front wheel and I went flying over the handlebars. I landed on my hands and grazed all my knuckles. I still have the scars today.
In high school, I was in gym class one day, and I jumped on a trampoline to get over a box. Unfortunately, I flew too far, fell off the end of the crash mat and landed on the floor. Because I wanted people to think I was tough, I pretended that I wasn’t hurt and tried to help the other students put away the equipment. But when I tried to use my arm, I was almost sick with the pain. I went to hospital to have an x-ray and found that my collar bone was broken. When I was about 18, I went into hospital to have an operation on my nose. At that time, I had a girlfriend called Ruth. She came to visit me in hospital. She was anemic, and the hospital was very hot. When she saw me lying in the bed with blood coming out of my nose, she fainted, hit her head on the floor, and had to be admitted to hospital herself!
In university, I pulled a muscle in my right leg when I was doing karate. That injury has caused me problems for many years. I also got cut above my eye when I was taking the test for my karate black belt. I had blood all over my face, and I still have the scar from that fight.
Anyway, I think that is enough to get us started. I’m looking forward to hearing all your horror stories. Feel free to talk about things that happened to people you know as well.

Bye for now,

David

Comments

Hi all,

It's a little bit no see you here. How are you? I was reading your commens about dream, but not all... To talk about dream is really fun. Especially, dream is a real life which David's friend said. It's very interesting because I've never think like that.
Anyway, I seem often to talk when I'm asleep. Actually, I shout or scream, sometimes cry... It's terrible.

Hi David,

You are really taugh. You always got recover even though you had many accidents. So maybe, you would be ok even if you got accident in the future. Do you mind about my comment? If yes, I'm sorry.
BTW, I tried to think about my accident. I don' remenber anything. I'm a very healthy person.

But let me tell you about my embarrasing and sad story. I played soccer when I was young. I kicked the ball against wall. I was really close to the wall(I don't know why). Can you guess what happened after?
I reacieved it by my face, but my leg...(鈍くさい)
It hurt and I cried... but my fault.
It's very embarrasing, right?

Hi Lily,
I reply to you late. I'm sorry. I told you my listening skill is getting go up. But I wonder if I could say it??? Because I can't understand any movies without subtitles. I just keep listening English as possiple as I can.

Look forward to your stories!

Hi David,

You really have lots of experience of injuries and accidents! You are right, boys often do dangerous things when they are young and get injured. I'm always worried about that my sons (especially my second son) might get seriously injured when they are playing outside because they don't know what is dangerous or limits of their abilities. When they see something they can climb, they always do and try to jump off. I think boys in particular like high places, something that involves speed and competing against their friends. But interestingly, a lot of men don't like roller coasters, I think. I love it! How about you, David?

I haven't had many accidents and been injured many times in my life. I haven't been hospitalized with illness and injury. I'm very lucky and healthy. But I remember my sixth birthday, after the party, I was playing with my friends. I jumped from some stairs outside and made a bad landing. I got a cracked ankle. It took several months to heal completely. I think that was my first serious injury.
In junior high school, I was in club activities and practicing volleyball, I stepped on the net in the gym when I just did オーバーパス. I slipped and landed on my face. I bumped my front teeth so hard and almost broke them. Blood dripped from my mouth onto the floor, I looked like a lion during a meal or something.

By the way, you have the black belt for Karate? Wow, you are strong!

Good night and see you soon.

Tomo

Hi everyone.

When I was a schoolchildren in the lower grades, I was bitten by a dog.
That was very unfortunate experience for me.
The scar on my hand sometimes awakens my distant memory.
In those days, there were many unconfined dogs in my hometown.
My hometown had been full of dark shadows of fear.
lol.
See you.

Hi Kimio,

Your comment reminded me - I was bitten by a dog on my nose when I was 14. I still have that scar too! Hi m.n. Can I comment on the last part of your comment? You used an English expression that many Japanese people get wrong. Many Japanese say 'as possible as', but the actual expression is 'as much as possible', 'as far as possible', 'as often as possible' etc. In your comment, 'I listen to English as much as possible' would be correct. You could also say, 'I listen to as much English as possible'. (By the way, I don't mind your comment at all. I am not tough - just stupid!)

See you all later.

David

Hi David,
How are you doing? You were in my dream last night. I was the same as me now, but I was your student and in some classroom, and I was taking your class and asked you some questions. I can't remember what the questions were, but it was a good dream!
By the way, you were bitten by a dog on your nose? But why did the dog bite on your nose?

Hi Kimio,
Welcome to the blog! Like David, your comment reminded me that I was bitten by a big black dog on my middle finger when I was in elementary school. I was going to give the dog my snack, but he was going to eat it with my hand!

See you later,

Tomo

Hi David,

You wrote "Can I comment on the last part of your comment?".

Did you write to me?

See you.

Hi David,

It came to my attention that you wrote to m.n..

You should begin a new line.

What do you think about your fol.

"
Hi Kimio,

Your comment reminded me - I was bitten by a dog on my nose when I was 14. I still have that scar too! Hi m.n. Can I comment on the last part of your comment? You used an English expression that many Japanese people get wrong. "

Hi m.n. is like a interrogation point.

Hi m.n. means 「ハイ、 ムーン。」

See you.

Hi, all

Here are the story of my father. When he was a college student, he had a Kuroobi, too. When he was practicing, he was always in bare foot. He ran bare footed outside, and there used to be broken glasses, and he often cut his foot sharp and washed it in the river. That’s what he says. When he was in his twenties, he drove a car drunk at night, and the car slipped off the road and rolled down the river bank. (Not into the river.) He came to himself at the next morning, and found out his several front teeth were stuck into his gum(歯茎にめりこんでいた).

See you, all!!!

Hey guys, how's it going?

I am the last person to get hurt. My bones have never been broken. I'm too chicken to try dangerous sports or something like that. I don't like even amusement parks. What else? Oh, I almost drowned when I was a kid. It's a horrible memory.

Hi Kimio.

You are new here, aren't ya? Welcome to the blog. And you know what? English speakers don't start a new line every time when they write English sentences like Japanese people do. I know that at first it's hard for you to read it, but don't worry, you will get used to it. Hey, if you don't mind, could you tell me what was "ハイ、ムーン"? Is that a joke or anything? I'm just curious.

See you soon.

Saydo

Hi Tomo,

I'm one of those who hate roller coasters. And now, there are rides which are more unbelievable than them. I can't understand why people like them. And also you reminded me that I hit a tooth against a chair accidentally when I was around 10. It was almost broken and bled a lot. It still looks strange.

Take care.

Hi Saydo,

Many thanks for your advice.

When I read "Hi m.n.", I thought "m.n" meant David's involuntary nodding.

When we nod, we sometimes vocalize.
For example, we vocalize "ウン", "ウーン", "ムーン", "m.n".

See you.

Hi panda,
I read your comment (father’s car rolled down the river bank and 歯茎にめりこんでいた). I felt a cold chill! Your father must be a charmed life!!! (same as David!?)

I've not done a big injury before. But my fear experience is…
The story was when I went to a restaurant with my friends. It was the restaurant with atmosphere and the main light was a candle on each table. When we saw the menu with the help of a candle, we heard of the sound 'メリッメリッ' and something smelled very strange.
Guess what??
My friend's long hair began to burn by a candle on the table!! We did not notice her hair burn at all, because we had concentrated on only the menu. The staff had covered her head with the wet napkin immediately, so fortunately her hair was not burned down. But she went to beauty salon next day and her hairstyle changed from long to medium. This is fear and sad story…

Thank you for your horror stories, everyone!
Welcome, kimio!

Fortunately, I don’t have any experience with serious injuries and accidents as far as I remember. (Knock on wood!!) So how about this;
One of my colleagues was really drunk that night, and she managed to go home and fell asleep. Next morning she found her pillow was bloody, and her two upper front teeth had gone! But she had no idea what had happened the previous night. That’s what she told me.

And have you ever heard of a man who was unaware of 12 cm knife stuck in his head? He was reported to suspect he had had the knife after falling from a kitchen stool when he had been drunk. He noticed no blood and had no major pain at the time. Later, he suffered headaches, and finally physicians found a knife blade in his head but it did absolutely no harm. Then physicians simply pulled the blade out of the man’s head without any complications. I should not laugh at the story, but it’s like a stupid cartoon. INCREDIBLE!

Hi David and everyone,
I have two sons.So when they were kids ( till senior highschool students), scrapes and cuts were usual matters to my family like David and Tome said. I always kept big Band-Aid and swab those days. There were many junury stories. When my sons were five and seven years old, we spent a holiday by the sea. After enjoying all day long, my sons went into the shower room with their father. After a while, elder son rushed into women's shower room and said," Mom, OOOO slipped on the floor and cut the top of his head!" Actually younger son was terribly bloody and was sent to the hospital by the amubulance.Even now around a hair whirl, his hair didn't grow slightly. Another story is my injury. I often ride bicycle when I go for shopping. About ten years ago, I left my house getting on the bicycle. Unluckily, the road was slippy after the rain. But I was running down the road without slowing down the speed. I fell down and hit my right elbow at the iron gate of someone's house. Just after that, my elbow was beginning to swell. At the hospital, I had an x-ray and found my elbow bone was cracked. I had to have my arm in a plaster cast for a month.( I never meant to do stunt, but failed...) Since then I've learned to slow down the speed. This is my painful story.
Wow! Panda's father's stories were horrible!

Have a good night,
Anne

Hi David,

I appriciate you taught me my mistake. It was not easy for me to use that expression. So I don't use it when I talk. I feel like using it next conversation somewhere.
I was bitten on my knee by dog about 4 years ago. It was so hard. The scar didn't disappeared for 2 years. I didn't go to a hospital, though.
Many people have the same experience like David, kimio, tomo. I'm surprised it.

Hi kimio,
"m.n" is my name which I use here. Nice to meet you.

Hi panda,
I can't read your father's whole story. I'm a peson who can't see even my own blood. If I saw it, I'm sure I could faint...

Hi ayako,
I'm scared of your friend's story. I can't think that my hair get burned...

I'm sorry I was laughing about your co-worker who was drunk. I know it's terrible for her. But I wonder where and how she lost her tooth and how much she drunk??? She is a real "酒乱". You too???
I have never know about the guy you was talking. I felt weird on my neck.

Hi anne,
All mothers are really strong. I would not be able to do anyhthing when my kids injur.( if I had kids.)

Hi m.n.

Nice to meet you.

Is your name Nonomura Makoto?
Nonomura Makoto's initial is M.M.

I found "as possible as" in SPACE ALC.

"If you or any of your family are interested in attending, please let us know as soon as possible as class size is limited. "

But, "as soon as" is more important than "as possible as".

David's advice is precious.

See you.

Sorry.

Nonomura Makoto's initial is M.N.

Hi Kimio

About the "as possible as" you found in eijiro, I don't think it is "as possible as". I think it is “as soon as possible + as class size is limited”, and I don't think they(native speakers) say "as possible as". (Sorry, if I'm wrong.)

By the way, 'm.n' is a cute girl;-)

See you,

Tomo

Hi everyone,
I have never been seriously injured. So, I will tell you a story of my daughter.
She liked licking everything when she was one year old. One day, I opened a freezer to take something out when I heard her burst into tears. I saw her tongue stuck on the side of the freezer! As I didn’t know what to do, I tore her tongue from the freezer so she wouldn’t get frostbitten. (I should have poured water between her tongue and the freezer. Silly me!) You know, as tongues bleed a lot, it made me panic more. She kept crying and bleeding while I was calling a hospital, half-crying. She stopped bleeding soon. I drove her to the hospital and her injury turned out not to be serious. I was relieved to find it out. I learned that keeping your calm is the most important in those situations. When we got home, I found a small frozen piece of her tongue still stuck on the freezer!

Hi m.n and all
I thought about "as~as possible" a little bit.
Like Tomo said, "as soon as possible"means 「~するや否や」and we understand this as an idiom. From your writing,I thought as follows:

1:I just keep listening MUCH English.
2:I just keep listening as much English as possible.(I can.)(as~原級as の比較級の文)
3:David's rewriting
I listen to as much English as possible(I can).
You might already know this and sorry if I'm wrong.
But it's a good opportunity for me to think again about the usage. Thank you sharing the idea.
Hi Kimio,welcome!
Hi Tomo,
Sorry for mistyping your name. When I was reading members comments, I noticed I mistyped your name Tome. I know I should not giggle... What a difference! Typing is not my forte.

There are many horrible and sometimes humorous stories about injuries. All of them are impressive!

See you soon,
Anne

Hi again,
I mistook .
Thank you sharing--Thank you for sharing

Anne

Hi Anne,
Don't worry, I don't mind it at all! But like you said, there is a big difference between Tomo and Tome.(笑) I giggled when I read it;-)

Hi Everyone,
Thank you for sharing all your horror stories!

David, how are you doing? I hope you'll get back on the circuit again soon. But you need a new bike, don't you? Are you planning to go shopping in the near future?

Speak to you soon,

Tomo

hi everyone

I read all of your comment. it made me feel pain. because I was reading the comments with imagination.
let me tell you my experience. when I was in 5th grade, I was walking around in the crass room one day. I hit the somebody's bag hanging at the desk. I didn't feel any pain. but my friend looked at my leg and she said ' What happened to your leg? It's bleeding. so I looked at my leg. it was bleeding. I cut my leg with 鞄の縁の部分の金具で(I can't exprain in English). I went to the hospital and the doctor sewed up the cut with five stitches.
about 5 years ago. I went into hospital to an operation on my eye(detachment of retina). during the operation I could see the needle facing my eye. I was really scared.

Hi, m.n;
Don't worry!

Tomo;
Oh, no! Please don't even think of it.

Hi David and Everyone,

Good morning, how are you? It seems like it's going to get hot today too. How is the weather there?

Amo, about the operation on your eye, that's really scary!!

。 By the way, むらさきはお酒が強そうだね~。 Let's go for a drink someday;-)

Anyway, I've finished the task 9 ‘Last weekend’(週末にしたこと), and here is my report.

The first take,

『I went to the hospital to have medical checkup, checkups last, last Saturday. It was the first time .. I had had medical checkups, and I hate shots, so I was a bit nervous about it. But, ... it went all well, and the doctor said I ha .. I, .. said that I had no problem and ... I was healthy. ...Well, it was, .. it was good for me. ... And after that, I went to .. a rent, rental shop “TSUTAYA” .. with my husband, and we rent some, some DVD's .. of movies. At night, we watched one of them, .. and it's kind of a .. it's a ..love story. ... Um, it was beautiful but, ... it had ...it, it wasn't happy ending. So, ... I thought I should have .. rent some other movies.
And on Sunday, I went to go shopping with my family, and it was Father's Day, .. so I cooked .. for my husband his favorite dish for dinner. And my two sons ... massaged my husband's shoulders. He looked very happy. So, .. yes, I have a good time .. with my family. .. That's all.』

Thanks David!

The latest take,

『Last weekend, I went to the hospital to have medical checkups which is called ‘人間ドック’ on Saturday. I had it for the first time in my life, and I hate shots, so I was a bit nervous about it. But after all the checkups, the doctor said that I had no problem and I was in good condition. I'm happy about it. Afterwards, I went to a rental shop ‘TSUTAYA’ with my husband, and we rented some DVD's. We watched one of them at night. It was a beautiful love story, but it didn't have a happy ending. I should have picked out some other movies. I like happy endings.
And on Sunday, I went shopping with my family. It was Father's Day, so I cooked my husband's favorite dish for dinner, and my two sons massaged my husband's shoulders. He looked very happy. So, yes, I had a good time with my family. That's all.』

それは‘Who with?’ 今までは‘Who are you going with?’ あと、私が真似した表現は、‘for the first time in my life’「生まれて初めて」と、‘afterwards’「そのあとで」です。
と‘I just stayed around the house.’
それから、‘I had a good time there too.’「そこでも楽しい時間をすごしました。」 迷わないのは‘Me too.’とか‘So am/do I.’くらいかな・・。
と言いたいとき、私もレベル2のモデルと同じ‘We enjoyed fireworks on the beach.’という表現が浮かんでしまうけど、ネイティヴなら‘We set off some fireworks on the beach.’

See you soon,

Tomo

It's very interesting because I've never think like that.
(It's very interesting because I've never thought of it like that.)
Anyway, I seem often to talk when I'm asleep.
(It seems that I often talk in my sleep.)

So maybe, you would be ok even if you got accident in the future.
(Maybe you will be ok even if you have an accident in the future.)

Do you mind about my comment? If yes, I'm sorry.
(If you do, I'm sorry) (Of course, I don't :))

I'm sorry. I told you my listening skill is getting go up.
(My listening is improving.)

The scar on my hand sometimes awakens my distant memory.

By the way, you were bitten by a dog on your nose? But why did the dog bite on your nose?
(I don't know. I was sitting down by the dog stroking it, and suddenly it just bit my face for no reason.)

(I've not had a serious injury before, but here is one scarey experience.)

Fortunately, I don’t have any experience with serious injuries and accidents as far as I remember. (Knock on wood!!)
(Hi Murasaki. I'm guessing that a lot of people don't understand 'knock on wood'. Can you explain it for them?)

But I was running down the road without slowing down the speed.
(You cannot use 'running' for a bicycle or a car. You can only use it for real running. Many Japanese people make this mistake because they translate 走る. If you were on a bicycle, we would say, "I was riding".)

I can't read your father's whole story. I'm a peson who can't see even my own blood. If I saw it, I'm sure I could faint...
(I'm one of those people who can't even stand the sight of my own blood. If I saw it, I'm sure I would faint.)

I mistook .
(We don't say this in English. We say, "I made a mistake".)

(Difficult question. In English, we would not usually use an action verb here. I think we would say, "We had some ...".)

I will do another entry tomorrow.

Bye for now,

David

Hi Team,

Sorry, the first part of my comment got cut off. Anyway, this is some feedback on the English you have written so far. It's very interesting!

Hi David,

Thanks for answering my questions, and thanks for the re-writings.
I'm happy to hear from you because I was wondering how you were doing.
Your re-writings are really helpful for us, but I'd like to hear how you are doing as well. I understand that you are sometimes very busy and don't have time to write very much. But when you have time, please let us know how you are doing, like 'crazy day!' or 'I went out for a ride..' etc. Your writings about your every day life are full of comprehensible input that I want to learn to use in my daily life. It is good study and we can keep the conversation going, or maybe I simply want to know how you are doing!(笑)

See you soon,

Tomo

Hi, all

Here is a story of myself. Don’t worry. It is not a big one.
I was in second or third grade of elementary school. My sister and I liked jumping in the house. We jumped to reach the ceiling, and tried to jump higher than the other. When I was jumping higher and higher, I didn’t notice there was a board of igo ( a board game with black and white stones) against the wall. I stumbled over, and hit between my legs against the corner of igo board. It was very painful, and I looked into my underwear. It was a little bleeding… Then my parents told me it was a very important part for girls, and it was not good to hit it. I was very shocked to know that, and cried aloud for a long time. But the pain went away soon, and it wasn’t serious after all.

Sorry, my baby is awake. See you!

Hi, again

He came to himself at the next morning,

Hi Panda,

Let me try answer your questions. I'm not sure if it is right or not, but I would say..

・He came to himself the next morning,
または
・The next morning, he came to himself and found~...

Anyway, Panda

Tomo

Thanks for your quick reply.
Thanks again!!

Hi David,
Thank you for rewriting . You surely explained the usage of the word"mistake"in your book(section 5「その単語知ってる!」 I need much more steps from "know the word-level" to"can use the word properly-level"!
Hi Panda,
He came to himself the next morning.
cry も cried loudly またはcried in a loud voice

You were a lively girl, were you?

Anne

Hi, Tomo;

Here's my understanding about ‘knock on wood’
Saying 'knock on wood' or the real action of knocking on wood (wood : wooden things like wooden furniture) or doing the both at the same time is a charm (おまじない)to prevent misfortune after referring to something fortunate for you.
For example, after saying, “I’ve never had an accident.”, one would add “Knock on wood.” to prevent it (an accident) from happening for real.

Hi, panda;
もちろんcry loudlyもcry in a loud voice も正しいと思います。

Hi Amica,

Welcome to the blog! I'm Tomo, nice to meet you!

Tomo

panda;

Anne,

Thank you so much!! You are always helpful to me.

Thanks!!

Hi Amica,
Nice to meet you!
Hi Panda,
Thank you for sharing the idea"Knock on wood". I didn't know that. We don't have such a phrase in Japan,do we? It's really a cultural diversity.

Hi everyone,
I need your help. At the former comment, I wrote the sentence as follows: I was running down the road without slowing down the speed. David explained the difference.(Thank you ,David!)
When I was writing the comment, my mood was focused on"下り坂をかなりのスピードで”、not on "flat road" or "bicycle". I rewrote my sentence to express my thought.
"I was riding down the slope without slowing down the speed"

See you soon!

Anne

Hi panda,

Hi Tomo,
Thanks for raising the question.

Hi anne,

David, how is your sister-in-law? I hope she is enjoying her pregnancy, too.

Tomo,
Who with?の関連表現で、Where to? Who with?

Thanks for the explanation about ‘knock on wood’. It's very interesting!

Hi Anne,
"I was riding down the slope without slowing down the speed"

I was riding down a slope at high speed.

Hi Blue Dream,
‘Where to?’ And where to?’ Thanks for your information!

Tomo

むらさき & other team memebers

knock on woodのついでに、cross your fingers、または
keep your fingers coressedもどうぞ。

Hi David and Everyone,

I'm a piano teacher.
But I was a vocal music major in college.
I'm a soprano.

Have a nice weekend!
