Omiai (2)

Hi Team,

I thought I was getting better yesterday, but then I couldn’t sleep at all last night and I feel terrible again today. I’m not going to do a recording for this entry because my throat is very sore and my voice sounds strange. Luckily, I don’t have any classes today, so I am just working quietly in my office. I don’t run or train at weekends, so I can relax tomorrow. On Sunday, I am going to Suzuka to watch some racing. A guy from Tonari san’s company (Okamura san) is racing in the 600 class (he is very fast), and then in the afternoon, we will all be watching the 300km endurance race. This race is for teams to prepare for 8 tai, so there will be a lot of top riders there. I’m looking forward to that.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts about ‘omiai’. It seems that most of you agree that ‘omiai’ is a good way to meet a marriage partner and that people who meet their partners through ‘omiai’ are usually very happy. Murasaki, I didn’t check the article you recommended, but was it the story about Welsh farmers putting their pictures on milk bottles? I saw that in a newspaper a few weeks ago and thought it was very funny. I think farmers in many countries find it difficult to meet potential marriage partners. I remember once when I stayed in a youth hostel near Abashiri in Hokkaido, there was a ‘goukon’ arranged for the local farmers by the village. The girls came up from big cities like Tokyo and Osaka and they camped with the local farmers’ sons in the garden of the youth hostel. I thought it was very strange that city officials (公務員) would spend their time trying to find wives for the farmers, but I suppose it is a good idea.

These days, it is becoming more and more common for people to meet via the Internet. This kind of dating used to have a bad image, but I think that is changing now. The problem is that there are too many strange people around, so you have to be very careful. Actually, I guess all the members of this blog met on the Internet, so we have to say that it is a good idea!

Anyway, I will see you again with a new topic on Monday.

Exactly! It’s about Welsh farmers putting their pictures on milk bottles to find love. You can also see all of their photos and profiles. I’ve heard they’re very busy reading e-mails from ‘potential’ marriage partners everyday. And one of them even got an e-mail from a 53-year-old American woman. Funny!

I'm enjoying the idea of a ‘weekly topic’. As you said before, I think it is a good idea because it gives people time to think about what they want to say and react to other peoples’ comments.

Lily, むらさき-Thank you for your reply about "why the divorce rates are lower". That's right! Meeting through Omiai aim the marriage, so couple can advance toward the same result. The problem about marriage is few even if they married, because they had been talking and thinking a lot about their marriage.

Panda, anne-Thank you for your wonderful story! I also used to think "お見合い結婚はイヤ!", like tomo said. But I changed my mind. if you want to marry, you should date through Omiai. You will be happy much longer, I think.

Hi David and Everyone,

I've finished the task 7 ‘Telling a story’, and here is my report.

The first take:

『One day, a young man met his friend in the park and they were talking. And then, he found a key. He asked her, “Is this yours?” And she said, “No.” Then, he took the key to the, to a police station, and he .. he said, “I found this in the park.” to the police officer. Then, he said goodbye to him and got home.
But .. when he was going to unlock the door, he realize that was his key. He went back to the police station, and said, “I'm sorry, that key was mine.” And the police officer gave it to, gave it back to him.』

今回は絵を見ながらストーリーを説明する task でした。　言葉につまることはなかったけど、後で聞いてみたら色々おかしい。。　‘got home’じゃなくて‘went home’だし、realize は過去形になってなかったし。　最後の方は余裕がなくて、彼やお巡りさんの表情などの情報を入れられなかったです。　それからビックリしたのは‘find’は｢動いてる最中に何かを見つけた｣ときに使う表現で、今回のように立ち止まっておしゃべりしてる時に見つけた場合は‘notice’(気づいた)の方がいいという事です。　知らなかった！

The latest take:

『One day, a young man met his friend in the park. When they were talking, the man noticed a key on the ground. He asked his friend if it was hers, but she said it wasn't. So he had an idea, and took the key to the police station. He told the police officer that he had found it in the park, and he handed the key to the policeman. He said goodbye to the policeman and went home.
But when he got home, he couldn't find his key. Then he realized that the key that he found was actually his. So he rushed back to the police station and asked for his key back. he looked very embarrassed, and the police officer looked really annoyed.』

ストーリーを説明する時には、現在時制でも過去時制でも、時制が統一されていればどちらでもOKということだけど、現在時制で説明するのはピンと来なかったので、私は過去時制を選びました。
a young man から いきなり he になるのはネイティヴの感覚だと少しジャンプしすぎということなので、a young man → the man → he にしました。
最初は｢直接話法｣でしか言えなかったので、苦手な｢間接話法｣、｢過去完了｣の練習の為に、本から色々真似しました。　間接話法はゆ～っくり考えるとできる時もある、というレベルで私にとってはまだまだすごく難しいです。　私が直接話法で言った文はこんな風になるんだ・・、ととても勉強になりました。　それから、彼やお巡りさんの表情を説明する表現も真似しました。 ‘He didn't look very happy about it.’(あまり言い顔をしなかった)、もおもしろい表現だな～と思ったのだけど、‘annoyed’を使ってみたかったので、私はこちらの表現にしました。 あと、‘cross’には‘angry’とほぼ同じような｢不機嫌な、イライラした｣という意味の使い方もあると知ってビックリです。

Now I see that "omiai" is not so bad. It's actually different from a blind date. They have information about a prospective partner before they meet each other. And they consider whether it's going to work or not. But I wonder if they love each other. Don't tell me that it's not so important in marriage. It is, isn't it?

パソコンが直ってから毎日ブログは見てるんだけど、英語のコメントを理解するのに時間かかるし、読むのが疲れたりして、ちょっと気持ちが英語から離れていたのです。あ～もっと英語がわかるようになりたーい！私の気持ちと努力次第なのは分かってるけど波ってあるよね。なんだか、愚痴ってしまった・・ごめん。。

Saydo and Everyone,
I’d like to talk about English listening.
Saydo, I have the same problem as you. I don’t think my listening ability improved much during the year in Canada. Listening is a really hard part, isn’t it? One of the most common goals of leaning English is “to watch English movies without subtitles” but most people don’t realize what an ambitious goal it is. Actually, watching movies isn’t so difficult because you can enjoy them even if you don’t understand all the English. But getting every sentence of it seems almost impossible. Is it because of the speed? No. Slangs? Not really. It’s the way of speaking. News is okay because there are no people who speak clearer English than news anchors. Movies and TV shows that target children and families or dramas and romances set in everyday modern times are not so bad. But some other movies and shows like crime movies, for example, are really hard to understand with lots of indistinct mumbling, sloppy or gruff speech, and some thick accents mixed with street noise and explosions, stuff like that. Legal stuff and period dramas are also difficult for their special terms and expressions, but that’s a different story.
As for captions, as Saydo mentioned, I think it’s good for learning English. But you shouldn’t rely on it if you want to train your listening ability in my opinion because I find myself focusing on reading rather than listening. I think it would be best if you watch it first without caption and then watch it again with caption on ... and preferably watch it a few more times. I think that’ll work. The problem is that I’m the kind of person who never reads or watches the same thing again! I think watching DVD’s with Japanese subtitles is also a good way because you can get hints from the subtitles as you listen to the English, only if you can avoid depending too much on the Japanese.

I finished Task 6. I’ll read your report of Task 7 after I finish it :-) I’m keeping it up. So, you have only two more tasks to go! It didn’t feel long, did it? But I doubt I would be still doing this, if I didn’t have co-challengers here. I just wanted you to know that, even though I’m too lazy to report about my challenge ;-)

外国語学習に成功する人たちは波を避けて来たわけではありません。成功する人は気持ちの波のサーフィンができるようになっただけです。
「自分の上達を感じない」は皆一緒だよ。私も「結構うまくなったかも…」と思った日もたまにあったけど、「やっぱりだめだ！何もわからない！」という日の方が絶対に多かったです。でも、何回（何百回？）もこの循環を経験すると、「語学って、もしかしたらこんなものかな？」と少しづつ気づいてきたので、それから少し楽になりました。』

Soraがブログに参加するちょっと前だったかな。　Davidは自分の日本語学習の経験から｢自分も同じだよ｣って教えてくれた。　そして私から見ると羨ましいくらい自由に英語を操っているLilyも同じ事を言っていたよ。　きっとSoraにはもっと肩の力を抜くことが必要なんだと思う。　私がよく波に飲まれてた頃は(笑)、肩にすごく力が入っていたんだと思う。　何でも早く全部理解したいと思っていたし、自分の出来ないところばかりを見ていたから。
エントリーやみんなのコメントを全部読んで理解するのは大変だと思う。　じゃあ、Davidのエントリーだけでも必ず読んで、コメントするっていうのはどう？　日本語だっていいんだよ。　休憩だって必要だし、少しずつ英語に挑戦すればいいんだよ。

About our challenge, I feel the same way as you. I can keep going because I have teammates, co-challengers!
And yes, one of my goals is also “to watch English movies without subtitles”. I like watching foreign dramas and movies with English subtitles. Because my listening skills are not good enough to understand it all without captions even if it for children and families. It helps me a lot to get the details of the English that I can't catch because it is too fast for me. Watching foreign dramas and movies with captions, I think it is a good way to notice how language is used, but for listening practice, I'm not sure if it is. Because I also find myself focusing on reading rather than listening. As you say, I think it would be best if you watch the same things a few times in different ways.

> むらさき、Thank you introducing funny article. I enjoyed much. In rural ares, it is true that even finding a mate to have a laugh with is difficult. So is Japan . There are a few reasons city officials spending their times for the farmers. One is of course to find good mates for their happiness. And another is increasign the number of married couples leads to the increasign the population of the city( village) ,from practical or financial reasons.
By the way, the title"message on a Bottle" reminded me of the novel( and the movie)"Message in a Bottle"(by Nicholas Sparks). Did you watch the movie? It was romantic and Kevin Costner played as the leading character.

David--How are you ? I hope you got over and you
enjoyed watching races in Suzuka .　I think that weekly topic seems to be going well so far. It's very useful ,I haven't showed up so often though.
Readig other member's comments is good practice to know how to explain the topic.

Sora -- I feel the same as you. Come to think of it,I was feeling low lately. But after reading your
comment and Tomo's advice to you ,I seemed to feel motivated .That's why I'm here again.
I remember David's Rule No10... You need to keep
going.Learning a language is not easy,and it takes a long time. You need other poeple to interact with,
people to teach you and people to support you when you are feeling low. That is why this blog is
such a good place to learn.

Tomo--Thanks to your warm advice to Sora, I am also cheered up.　Tomo やLily 、Davidもそうだったのかぁって知ると、勇気がでるよ。これからも、ちょこちょこ、お尻を持ち上げてネ｡

Thanks！！　うちの母が出席した『お母さんのお見合い』にも、新聞記者が来ていて、なんと母はローカル新聞に後ろ姿が大きく写ったので、家族みんなで、大笑いしたのでした。だって、私の母は、ちょっと太っていて、なんだがぬいぐるみの熊みたいに写っていたの･･･。

Anne – 「日本もまたそうです」 I would say “It’s the same in Japan.” I wouldn’t use the form ‘so is X’ because the country isn’t the subject（主語）.

Iun – Oh, that sounds sweet! (I mean the cakes!) That made my mouth water ;-)

Q-chan!! It’s been a while. Good to see you again :-) 「これからも、ちょこちょこ、お尻を持ち上げてネ｡」そんな日本語あったけ？？「お尻を叩いてね」なら聞くけど。（わたしだけ？）でも、すっごいかわいい～！（＾＾） It sounds sooo cute! Anyway, like Tomo said, take it easy! Tomo, you are mistaken. I’m still learning to surf!

I’m happy you count on me. I would say, “That’s true in Japan, too.” “true for～, too” で、「～にも同じことが言える、～にも当てはまる」なのですが、この場合Japanは場所なのでforよりinのほうが適切かなと思いました。Thank you too, Lily!

Thank you so much for telling me your opinion. I am really happy to hear your experience. You actually had the same problem when you were in Canada, huh?
Some say you could get your English skill improved if you were in an English environment all the time. But Vancouver has lots of Japanese people that are nice, so I'm always with them. It is obviously bad situation for studying English. I also heard that the young people, like teenager, who my friends knew had improved their English skill very much. I'm just jealous... But maybe they just did their best.
We should keep using English as long as possible because we can't give it up, right?

Hi Saydo,
Yeah, I know what you mean. Young people are quick to pick up a language. And they pick up pronunciation and conversational phrases very well so they sound even better than they really are. Besides, it’s much easier for beginners to improve their English dramatically than for more-than-intermediate learners to improve their English to a higher level. But listen! When I was taking classes in an ELS school, I had a class with four German teenage girls once. Their English was very fluent and they were pretty talkative. But one day, the teacher said that their English was more fluent but my English was more mature, at which they didn’t look very happy, BTW ;-) I was like, “It should be! I’m, what, more than 10 years older than them!” Well, I may have been sidetracked a little, but my point is: you can’t be like young kids, but it doesn’t mean their English is better than yours just because it sounds better (or sounds like it has improved more than yours). You can be better in many ways.
As for Japanese people in Vancouver, it didn’t bother me. I often hang out with my Japanese friends (and some of them became really good friends) but we never spoke Japanese even when we were alone, and I think that was a good speaking practice. You got to make choices, I guess.

Long Time No See....
I have been hoping that I read this blog and make comments. I have not read all topics & comments (which were posted in my absence ) yet, but I post this comment... sorry to all.

今日は近況報告のみにて失礼させていただきます。
本当はこの週末で全部のトピ＆コメントに目を通したかったんですが、バタバタしていてとてもじゃないけど時間が作れませんでした。なんとも失礼な状態でのコメントになりますが、今回は許してくださいm(_ _)m
なんだか色々と忙しくしている毎日でした。今月は本当に公私ともにバタバタです。月末はUSJ行ってきます(えへ)。そして、なんと実家に戻ることになりそうです。実家に戻ると通勤時間が行き帰り合わせて4時間近くになってしまうのですが、ネット環境があるので今までよりも頻繁にブログチェックできるなーと思っています☆引っ越すのは早くて2ヵ月後とかだとは思いますが、それまで皆さん私のこと忘れないでくださいｗ

I’m sorry to reply you late even though you taught me that I should use the word “talk” instead of “tell” in my comment. I understood what you said! Thanks!
I was thinking about listening skill. My listening skill is getting improving recently because of my job. I speak in English and listening to it almost everyday. In addition to that, I listen to English and change the English more simple English. So I must focus what the native says. On the other hand, I sometimes don’t understand anything. But I believe it’s important to listen to English in any ways and ask the meaning when you don’t understand(just try).
And I met a Japanese who can speak English like native even though he has never been to abroad and don’t have any native friends. He seemed to study only movies. He watched the same movie again and again and remember them. So watching movies can help you to listen and speak English.
長々と分けが、わからなくなっちゃったけど、映画は英語を勉強するのに、最適と言いたかっただけです・・・。

I don’t think it is bad to be with another Japanese people. Many foreign people who live in Japan, they hang out with people who are from their countries. But they also try to be friends with Japanese. If you think “I have to leave Japanese and be with native people all the time, you might have stress because of it. So you just keep to hang out your nice Japanese friends and try to talk with Canadian people a little bit more. This is just my opinion, though.

I watched the show about parent’s omiai. That is the same as your mother did. How to meet people does not relate to how long your marriage life keep going as I read all of your comments. If you are happy, nothing is wrong, right?

Hi Everyone,

I've finished Task 5.I chose Kyoto as a famous spot. The word itself was not difficult, but I could'nt explain well. What I've learned here is to try not to repeat the same words but to express differently. And the expression "A--that would have to B(Ａと言えばやはりＢですね。）"is new to me and I want to copy and remember.

Oh, I know about the movie you were talking about. A woman happened to find a bottle on the beach, which contained a touching message written by a man to his dead wife, right?
Well, actually, I didn’t see it, because Kevin Costner is not my type. Oh, I’m sorry if you’re a big fan of Costner. (I like older men, but a little bit different type.)
Anyway, the word ‘message in a bottle’ really stirs the imagination, doesn’t it?

だめ、だめ、だめ、だめですぅ～。あー、びっくりした！

時間がものすごくかかるので、後は日本語で申し訳ありません。Lilyのコメントでいろいろ思い出したことがあります。日本の英会話学校の教師をしていたアメリカ人の話です。クラスはたいてい若いOLと中年の男性がほとんどだったそうです。女子は留学やワーホリ経験ありで、発音はきれいだし、リスニングもバッチリという人も結構いたそうです。でも、テーマについて意見を聞いても、話すことが何もないので、せっかく英語がぺらぺらでもちっとも身のある会話にならないそうです。一方、おじさんたちは、発音はものすごくひどいし、のろのろ話すのですが、内容はとても興味深く、単語力もそれなりにあって、とても尊敬できると言っていました。あと、あるオーストラリア人には25歳以下の日本人の女性には全く興味がないと言われました。理由は、話の内容が結婚とファッションのことだけだから。そう言えば、大学時代、ある教授が言っていました。「今のあなたたちは若いというだけですばらしいけれど、若さや美しさはすぐに失われてしまう。そうなった時に、ただのおじさん、おばさんにならないように中身を磨きなさい。そのためには、引き出しをたくさんつくっておくことです。」どんどん関係ない話になってすみません。言いたかったのは、英語の発音がどうとか、流暢かどうかはそれほど重要ではないかもしれないということです。もちろん英語力はあるに越したことはありませんが、一番大切なのは、その英語で話すことがあるのかどうか、何を話すのかということなんじゃないかと思うんです。英語も中身も日々精進あるのみです。

言葉は一種の道具で(もしかしてこれも、むらさきが以前コメントしてたよね?!違ってたらごめんなさい。)、その中身の方が問題になるよね。どれだけ心が込められているかとか。

You are right. To understand English in movies is really difficult. Because there are a lot of background information. I mean, spoken words are only the surface of great many meanings. If we are to understand the meaning of every word, we have to know the background information.
I have difficulty in understanding even if the movie is of Disney’s. I think that’s because I don’t know what all the children in US know (like mother goose, famous TV program, or how mothers tell them manners…)

一週間の新聞から、興味のあるトピック１つを選び、それを説明する---というクラスに参加しています。クラスで話を聞いていると、必要なところで数字を使ったり、過去の実例を引き合いにだしたりした話は説得力もあり、安心して聞くことができます。中身が濃いと興味も涌きます。【濃茶ではなく濃話だネ】

僕も気をつけ、濃話が実践できるようになろう！
