Magic Moments (2)

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for sharing your 'magic moments'. I am not a parent, so I can't comment on the feeling of seeing your own child, but I think that really happy people are the ones who can find 'magic moments' all the time in their everyday lives.

I have had a really busy week this week, and now I have to rush off to the bike shop to get some new tyres on my bike before I go to Suzuka tomorrow. お母さんが読んでいるかもしれないから英語でかけないけど、明日は事故以、来初めての走行（隣さんも）になるので、楽しみにしているような、緊張しているような気持ちです。でも、事故はもうほとんど忘れているし、体は完全に治っているので、きっと大丈夫だと思います。

Anyway, let's keep the theme of magic moments going over the weekend. I'm sure that a lot of people still have stories to share! Next week is our test week at university, so it's going to be another busy one. The week after that, I will still have lots of work to do, but then I will be heading back to the UK, and I will have a week off to visit friends before I have to go to university.

Before I finish, let me share one other magic moment with you.

When I was 24, I left the police and decided to become an English teacher and travel the world. Many people said that I was crazy to give up such a good job, and I must admit that I was not always sure I was doing the right thing. When I arrived in Singapore, I didn't know anyone, but I soon made friends with the other teachers in my school. They invited me to go to Malaysia for the weekend, so of course I said yes. We stayed on an uninhabited island (無人島), and on the first night, we all sat on the beach looking up at the stars. I had never seen such a beautiful sky. We started talking about lives and our friends back home, and then somebody said, "This is it. Right now -this moment. We are living our dream. Our friends are back home worrying about jobs and homes and families, and we are sitting on a perfect tropical beach at night, listening to the sound of the ocean and looking up at a view most of those friends will never see,"

I knew at that moment that I had made the right decision, and it was wonderful to be with other people who had all taken the same risk and understood how I felt. That was another of my magic moments.

Anyway, I am hoping to have a few magic moments at Suzuka tomorrow, so I had better get to the bike shop. Have a great weekend, and see you all next week.

The article was quite difficult, but I managed to read it. It was an interesting story. Maybe cannabis would be legal in Britain sometime soon.

A night rainbow?? Of course I never seen it, and I never thought that there can be a rainbow at night. I looked for it on the Internet, and found some pictures of it. It was beautiful! It must be much more beautiful if I see real one. Lucky you!

We (this team) know you can easily update this blog from United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Internet doesn't question someone's whereabouts.
This team will look forward very much to have contact with David Barker in UK.
Because many Japanese know Nanzan University
and Suzuka Circuit well, David Barker in UK is more appealing than David Barker in Japan.
I hope you introduce the daily life in UK to us.

Hi Everyone,

I went to Suzuka this morning, but neither me nor Tonari san rode because it was raining. We went for an onsen instead!

My father sent me a comment he wrote about the ban on smoking in England. My mother has had some trouble with her computer, so they couldn't upload it themselves. Here it is:

Hello I am Bill Barker - David's Dad
David asked for my coments on the recent change in the law regarding smoking in the UK.
The UK is made up of four countries England , Scotland Northern Ireland , and Wales.
The smoking of tobacco in enclosed places was forbidden by law in Wales, Scotland and N.Ireland before it was forbidden in England.
The number of people smoking in the UK has been decreasing steadily over the last few years particularly amongst older people. Regretfully many young people, especially girls, have taken up the habit.
On July 1st the ban on smoking became law in England as well, so now the entire UK is smoke-free in enclosed places. Generally speaking the ban has been accepted, although there has been grumbling about interference by the government in people's lives. Most affected by the ban are pubs (public houses); a pint and a fag (a beer and cigrarette) have always gone together. For the first time ever it is possible to return from a night out without your clothes reeking of smoke. Those who still smoke have to go outside and huddle under a parasol if it's raining. What they will do in the winter remains to be seen. An unexected side effect is our sense of smell is now returning, and unfortunately we realize how many of our fellow drinkers smell of BO (body odour) and worse! As the years roll by I am sure future generations will find it very odd that people were ever able to smoke in public buildings.

Hello Mr.Barker,

Thank you for telling us about the ban on smoking in England. Pubs and cigarettes have always gone together in my image as you mentioned, so I was surprised to know that many people accepted this decision preferably. Now in Japan, , smoking areas have become more and more limited, and smoking on the road is banned in a few areas. Considering of the bad effect on our body, it might be natural to quit smoking, but the number of girls who smoke is increasing in Japan,too. In the near future, Japan will follow the UK related to the ban on smoking.

I read your comment after I posted my comment last time.
You’ve been to Paris, have you? So you enjoyed yourself in there, too, right? Unfortunately, I did not go to museum of Picasso. In the guide book, there are about 60 museums in Paris. If I could stayed in Paris for a month, still not enough!!! I want to go countryside in France next time, too!!
p.s. 私もm.nのことを弱い人間とは思いません。私は結構いやでも会社をやめれない人です。多分やりたい仕事がないからだと思います。なので、逆にうらやましいです。これからも、やりたいことにむけて頑張ってね。

I haven’t read THE DAVINCI CODE yet, but I watched the movie. It was interesting, but little bit difficult for me, maybe I should read the book, too.

I had a similar experience like you had in Firenze, it was about 10 years ago. I don’t remember exactly place, but it was one of the highest points in Firenze. We could see a beautiful view form there. So I can easily to imagine what you saw in there.
By the way, you are singer, right? I like singing, but not good at. So, I really envy you!!!
Usually I listen to British or American rock, but now I am into “Elisabeth (musical)”. I went to see the concert version of it last May. I wish I could sing like them, I can’t speak German though.

I like your magic moment in Malaysia. I’ve been to Malaysia, too. I stayed in Langkawi and Kuala Lumpur.　I joined an ecotour in Langkawi, and it was fun. We went to a small island. There was a limestone cave, and we went into there. It was difficult to walk inside, and dark, so I shone a flashlight on, it was beautiful. I really enjoyed myself in there.

By the way, I think your decision to become an English teacher was absolutely right because you are the best English teacher I've ever met.
You know what? The moments that I said ‘Hi David’to you in person in this April is one of my special moments. I will remember it for the rest of my life. I thought my heart was going out of my chest!(笑)

Yes, I'm singer.
I love "ELIZABETH", too!
I have seen the musical in Tokyou （東宝ミュージカルで観ました）, and I have a CD that is original Vienna cast version of ELIZABETH.　
I have sung one of the musical's songs in German at my concert.
I have learned opera since I was 18, but I like musical too, so I have been to NY to I see some musicals on Broadway.
It was so excited!
Do you have any other favorite musical?
I like "RENT".
The other day, I watched the musical movie on "WOWOW", and I was moved.
I'm going to get the CD.

I haven't watched DAVINCI CODE on DVD yet, but it looks interesting. I heard that the movie wasn't good enough like its books, 'cause it was so hard to put the whole story into a two hours and a half movie. I'm not sure about this, but the storyline might be kind of undigested or something? I'll probably watch it next week, though;-) Tomo and Amo said, it was interesting, so it's enough for me to have a reason to watch it.

It was nice to know about a smoking situation in the U.K. It seems to be more strict than I thought. I strongly think the American should follow the British example in the near future. Thank you for sharing this with us.

As for your question about "Not one little bit", If I'm correct, I thought this means was just "NO". Let me explaining about it more. For instance, assuming that you're having a cake, and I want to take a bite it.

Pink NY "Can I take a bite your cake?"
Amica "Not one little bit."
Pink NY "You're stingy!!"

Do you get the picture? You can just say,"NO" in this case, but it's kind of an expression of exaggation. It's like you're just putting me on.
Sorry, I'm not good at explaining:-( Hope you understand me and my explanation is right. If I'm wrong, sorry, and somebody tell me a right answer!!David, please help us!!

It's an honor to have you with us. Thank you very much for your comment on smoking in UK.
In Japan, some municipalities even have an ordinance to ban on smoking on the street. The main purposes of the law are to protect people from second hand smoke or injury from burning cigarettes.
The situation of smoking in Japan seems to be the same as in UK. (The number of people smoking~ decreasing~. ~many young people, especially girls, have taken up the habit.)
Are you sure future generations will find it very odd that people were ever able to smoke in public buildings? So am I! Several years ago, smoking during meetings was only natural and a clever maneuver to 煙に巻く(ke-mu-ni-ma-ku : lay down a smoke screen?), but it’s not the case any more.

Did you have a good weekend?
I've got Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows! I'm reading it, but sometimes I don't understand some parts even though I use a dictionary. I want to understand it all because it is the final part of the story. I wish English were my native language. I really envy those who can read it easily!

I haven't read the book, so I don't know the original story. I thought the movie was really good, but you might not think so. 本を先に読むと、映画はカットされている部分がたくさんあって、ちょっと物足りない･･と思ってしまうかも。(私がハリーポッターの映画を見るとそうなので）　でも自分の想像が映像になるっていう所は楽しめると思います＾＾

「Not one little bit」はＰｉｎｋ　ＮＹが説明した場面でも使われます。また、お礼を言われたときに“全然そんなことはありません”という意味で使われます。

特に、『お手数をおかけしました』とか『ご面倒をおかけしました』などの場面で使われることがあります。not one(a) little biｔは文字通り訳すと、幾分（a lille), 少し（ｂｉｔ）が否定（ｎｏｔ）され、「少しも（そんなことはそうでは）ありません」となります。

言葉なので、言われた（書かれた）場面の前後がないと訳すのは難しいです。

絵本は文章も短く、韻をふむ表現が多用されており、また、説明文がなく文章も必要最低限しか書かれていないことが多く、理解するのが難しいです。日本の絵本も同じです。

大きな書店で、英語のレベル（単語のレベル）によって、書かれた書籍が販売されています。そちらの本の方が読むのは楽かもしれません。

Thanks for your explanations.
絵本の中では、"I don't like it. Not one little bit."と二つの文がいつもセットになっていました。
この場合は、「私はそれが好きではない。全然（少しも）好きではない。」という意味になるということでしょうか？
Pink NYの例文の訳は、
「ケーキちょっとだけちょうだい。」
「ちょっとだけでもダメ。」
「ケチ！」
であってますか？

これを絵本風に、女の子が言うのであれば、「それは好じゃないわ。ちっとも好きじゃないわ。」と表現できます。
