I read in the newspaper about the death of Norifumi Abe.
I think it was a unfortunate traffic accident. 　
He was young, so I don't know what to say except that I'm thinking of his family's sorrow.
May his soul rest in peace.

About a new project, this list is very interesting for me!
My English vocabulary is(are?) very poor, so I'm sorry I'm not sure if you have covered the most important translations and you have put in any translations that are not really important.
But I found some mistakes about kanji.

artist：美術か→美術家
back：引返して →引き返して
design：企図？I can guess the meaning of the word, but I think the word is a nonword. (But I can't be certain.)
need：必要する→必要とする

I didn't have much time today, so I only went through to E on the list. But I am posting it.

Is this words lit for junior high, or high school students, or for business persons? As you know, Japanese translation will be different by who is going to learn, just like English. The list includes "cat" and "dog", which will be learned in junior high. Yet, it includes the words for business use as well.

Here is the list of the words that I think Japanese meaning should be added:

Thanks Mac,

The English words are the top 2100 words from the British National Corpus; I didn't choose them. Actually, ''cos' is very common in spoken English, and not unusual in writing either. That is why it is so high up the frequency list. If you want to look at the whole list (up to six thousand and something), have a look at this page.

The first number is the frequency ranking of the word ('the' is number 1), and the second number is the number of times it occurred in the corpus check.

I have cut the first 100 words from my list, and taken the next 2000.

Hi David,

Yes, I saw the news about the death of Norifumi Abe. I had not heard Abe's name, but my husband told me he was a very famous motorcycle racer called ノリック. I saw how he got killed by a truck on TV. The truck driver was really stupid! It was terrible.

About dictionaries, I agree with you. They have too much information and too many translations, and it's difficult to choose a correct translation. I often get confused. Anyway, here is my idea. (+○○は付け足しです）

I've heard about the death of Norifumi Abe on TV and read in the newspaper. It was the terrible tragedy, and thinking of his future and his parents, I can't find a word. I thought this could happen to any of us when I was watching the news. Yes, I know his name ; I watched him riding at Suzuka 8 tai or something.

Hi Everyone,

When I read the David's list, I was shocked because there were too much words which I don't know in the list.
I know I didn't study hard in English when I was a student, so it is my own fault that my English vocabulary is very poor.
I can't translate the list's words like you.
I'm depressed....

PS.
I use a electric dictionary when I read and write in English.
I can't write in English without it.
Of course, it is not good that I rely on only it.
But as Anne said, I think I need a dictionary when I brush up my English ability.

Come on, don't worry, there are a lot of words I don't know in the list, and I also didn't study English hard when I was a student.(英語だけじゃなく・・なんて自慢にならないけど(笑)) When I joined this blog last year, my vocabulary was really poor, and I couldn't read and write English well.(It's still poor, though.) でも最初に足りなかったのは、ボキャブラリーより英文考える｢コツ｣だったような気がします。　自分の言いたいことがビックリするくらい簡単な文(単語)で言えるのを知るたびに驚いていたし。。
I'm sure your vocabulary is getting better because you read and write English every day. Take it easy;-)

If you write a kanji word that you think I might not know, please put the furigana in brackets after it. That will save me a lot of time searching in my dictionary!

Hi Team,

I don't want to do a new entry today because I want to get as much feedback as possible on the word list. What you have given me so far has been really helpful, and I want to say a big 'thank you' to everyone who has taken the time to check it for me.

Some of you have noticed that some of the entries are repeated. That is because the word comes up more than once as a different part of speech, but really just has the same meaning.

I am going for a long ride on my new bike tomorrow, probably up to Nagano again (or maybe Shizuoka). I will take some pictures of the bike and the scenery to show you next week. On Sunday, I am going to Suzuka for another practice session, but recently Tonari san has become an 'ame-otoko', so I am a bit worried about the weather. If it rains, I think I will just go to the onsen and come back home. I am too old to be riding in wet weather!

This Sunday is the Australian round of the Moto GP championship. That is where all the best riders in the world race, and I think they will probably do something in memory of Norick Abe. Anyway, I hope they do something to show that everyone is missing him.

なるほど、そういうことか～。　そうだね、「引っ込む」、「引っ込める」は口語表現っぽいかも。。　う～ん、でもこれでいいんじゃないかなぁ・・という気もします。　もし言い換えるとしたら、私だったら｢引っ込む｣→｢引き下がる・引き揚げる｣、｢引っ込める｣→｢取り消す｣とかにするかな・・。　母国語なのに自信がない(笑)

The poem which I introduced was originally written in Japanese ,and some of his books are translated into English. I chose it from " Road of The Tinkling Bell"(「鈴の鳴る道」）。 I love his paintings, poems and essays.

　風にとんでゆく
　紙くずさえ

　そんな秋の中に
　野菊が咲いている
