The aetheist revolution
Hi Everyone,
And welcome Asa and Ru. Nice to have you with us. Thanks for sharing all the proverbs and your ideas. Actually, I never really learned any Japanese proverbs, so if there are any you think I should know, please put them on the blog. Yesterday, I went on another long ride on my new bike. This time, I went up to Chausu Kogen (the west part of Aichi). The koyo has really got going up there, and it was incredibly beautiful. There is a viewing point from which you can see up to the Alps in Nagano. I got there at sunset, and the sky was pink, the mountains in the distance tipped with white, and the trees below below blazing with reds and oranges and yellows. I didn't take a picture because it was too dark, and also, I think it was just too 'big' for a photograph. Do you understand what I mean?
Anyway, the topic for this week is one that has been making a lot of news in the UK and the US since the summer (and before that) because of a man called Richard Dawkins. He is a professor of biology at Cambridge University (or Oxford - I can't remember), and he is probably the most famous aetheist in the world. An aetheist is a person who has no religion and does not believe in God. Professor Dawkins first became famous for writing about evolution (進化論） and genetics, but he has also written a lot about why religion is a bad thing. Recently, he brought out a new book called 'The God Delusion'. In this book, he explains why he thinks that all religions are dangerous and tries to persuade readers who are aetheists that it is okay to say that you don't believe in God.
As you may know, religion is very powerful in America (not so much in Britain), especially in American politics. Something like 70% of Americans still believe that the earth was created 5000 years ago even though science can prove that some rocks are millions of years old. President Bush said that he went to war in Iraq because he knew that he was doing what God wanted him to do. Anyway, lots of people in America (and Britain) have attacked Professor Dawkins, but he is becoming a hero to people (including me!) who are tired of all the war and misery that religion creates. If you have a look at his website (www.richarddawkins.net), you can see lots of videos of TV shows he has been on, listen to recordings of radio interviews, and read articles about the issue of religion.
One of the best things about Japan is that people here are not really religious, and it might be hard to understand how powerful religion can be in places like America. So, this week, I wanted to ask you what you think about the ideas of religion. Do you think religion is a positive thing that helps people lead good lives, or do you think it is a dangerous kind of brain-washing that does far more harm than good? (My opinion is the second of those!)

「見なかったことにする」－良いですねぇ、これ。
ウチのボスですか？マフィア？う～ん、お酒とドンパチがだ～い好きです！ドンパチって言葉のですけど。対立して、議論が白熱してくると、「面白くなってきたぞ！」とニンマリしているんですよ。あと、もっと困るのは、時々、夕方出先から戻る時、お酒のボトルをお供に帰ってくること。ワインの入ったグラスをみんなの机の上に置いて回るのです。飲みながら仕事やれってか？一番要求されている能力は、ワインの２、３杯飲んでも、顔色ひとつ変えずに仕事ができる（ふりでも可）ことみたいです。

Personally, I’m not a religious person. But I don’t necessarily think religion is a dangerous kind of brain-washing that does far more harm than good. It’s a matter of degree and balance, I think.
This topic reminds me of a woman I met a few years ago and what she said. This American woman, who is from Oregon (not from the Bible Belt, I mean), is a college-educated and liberal person.
One day when I said, by chance, that we evolved from apes, she seriously asked me, “Who said that?” I was shocked, because I took IT for granted. And she continued, “We don’t have any SCIENTIFIC proof like fossil bones that show each and every evolution process between apes and Homo sapiens.” (This is absolutely true.) I realized there are things that we shouldn’t talk about lightly.
Later, I read an article about school curricula in the U.S., in which it is said that in some states teaching Darwin’s evolution theory in class had been even prohibited until about 40 years ago, and there is still a huge conflict on how to teach the theory. Some religious people now advocate the idea called ‘Intelligent Design’ as an alternative ‘explanation of the origin of life’, which explains all life was designed by an intelligent agent (=God).(‘Creation’ is replaced with the words ‘intelligent design’)
Hard to believe, but it’s a fact. Balancing science and religion seems to be very difficult for some people.

Hi David,
You wrote Japan is that people here are not really religious, but I have a religion of my ancestors, (It is 曹洞宗, and it is Zen sect.), and probably, thinking of religion I have is different from thinking of religion most of American people have.
I don't usually feel I have it, and I just only make offering of tea at Buddhist altar every morning, and sometimes visit family grave.
(My grandmother recites a sutra at Buddhist altar everyday.)
I and my family have a devotion for our ancestor.
We hope our ancestor's soul have rest and peace, for that purpose we have a religion, and we don't mind about what kind of religion other people have.
Everyone has his or her own idea, so I think it is okay there are various religions.( Of course, it is okay if you don't have a religion.)
However, it isn't good to impose their religion on other people, and it is very danger to do it.
Most of the wars which is happening in the world are caused by religion.
They believe their religion is the best one and God they believe must be the only God in the world.
Why? I don't understand about it.
「宗教」と聞くと、多額の寄付をしたり、強制的な勧誘をしたり、テロまがいのことをしたり…とマイナスのイメージがありますが、私が持つ「宗教」（この場合は信仰心と言った方がいいかもしれません。）とは、先祖の霊を敬い、仏壇に手を合わせ、お墓参りをする、というものです。
なので、その人が信じているのならば宗教・宗派は何でもいいと思っています。
個人的には「神（仏）を信じるか？」と聞かれたら、「うーん…どうだろう？」という感じなのですが。
私が住んでいる町は田舎なので、お寺との結びつきが都会よりも強いかもしれません。

Hi everyone,
Personally I'm not a religious person, but my family's religion is Zyodosyu(浄土宗）、one of the schools in Buddhism, and I pray at a family alter offering incense sticks and candles every morning. There is also a Shinto family alter installed above the Buddhism one. It would be a 'custom' rather than as 'object of faith', but it is good for me to start off the day. Most of the Japanese don't exclude other religion even though he(she) believes in specific one.(There are some exceptions, though.) Among them, Shintoism is the oldest and the basic religion, and in this beliefs and way of thinking, Gods are everywhere in trees forces of nature..., and there is the phrase 'yaoyorozu no kami'(八百万の神）meaning eight million kami including "Izanagi" and "Izanami". There are many stories related to these Gods and they are interesting. The words 「お天道様が見ている」（Gods are watching your deed whether you do bad things.) occurred to my mind related to religion. It might not be religious beliefs, but the matter of morality. I love this way of thinking.
There are many things to talk about religion!
I'll have a look at Professor Dawkins' website later.

英語でコメントは書きましたが、あまりうまく書けなかったので、日本語で補足します。
正直な話、私はあまり宗教について深く考えたことがありません。自分の家が「曹洞宗」だということも、そしてそれが「禅宗」だということも、大人になってから知ったくらいです。
小さい頃から毎日仏壇に手を合わせることはしていましたが、これはAnneも書いているように、習慣かもしれません。
（同居していた祖父が10年前に他界したことで、先祖というものを身近に感じるようにはなりましたが。）
「宗派は何ですか？」と聞かれれば答えることはできますが、それに対しての深い思い入れはありません。
他の宗派との違いもよくわかりませんし。
なので、欧米諸国においての「宗教」は、私が持つそれとは違うのでよく理解できません。
…日本語でもうまく書けてませんね。
難しいです。

Sometimes the power that be uses religion to stir up enmity among people. When misused, religion can do far more harm than good. So does science; nuclear reaction is a good example. Life is full of wonder, joy, happiness, fear, sorrow, sadness or unfairness. Whenever something happens in life, people try to understand the meaning of the happening. But science doesn’t always have the answer. Then come philosophy, art, religion. etc. Suppose you contract an incurable cancer, do you think you could convince yourself only with a fact that one in three Japanese die of cancer? I don’t think so. You would ask ‘why me?’, ‘why now?’, ‘what is death?’, ‘what is life?’ and so on. In that kind of situation what is there for you can be religion. Religion might soothe your fear and anger, help you accept the reality to recover peace of mind or even give you hope. I find that process very human. So I can’t dismiss religion as being a dangerous kind of brain-washing that does far more harm than good.
一口に宗教と言っても、大量殺戮をも辞さない原理主義的なものから、AnneやAmicaが言うように、ほとんど日常的な習慣のような、ちょっとした心の支えのようなものまでいろいろあると思います。その時々の権力と結びついて人々の間に憎悪を掻き立て、戦争に駆り立てることもありますが、それは宗教自体が悪いのではなく、それを利用する人間が悪いのだと思います。人生には乗り越えなくてはならない試練もたくさんあります。何か不幸が起こった時、人はたいていどうして自分にこんなことが起きたのか、なぜ今なのか、死とは何か、生きるとはどういうことなのか、様々な問いに対する答えを見つけようとすると思います。でも、どんなに科学が進歩しても、依然として万能ではなく、それらの疑問に的確に答えられるとはかぎりません。そこに哲学や芸術、宗教が生まれるのだと思うのです。不治のガンに侵された人が信仰によって心の平和を取り戻し、現実を受け入れ、より良く生きようとすることもあります。人間はある意味でとても弱いものだし、何か心の支えになるものも必要だと思います。それが人によっては信仰ということもありますし、宗教をすべて悪と考え、切り捨てるという考えには私は賛成できません。

I agree with you.
I can't deny religion completely, too.
There are lots of people who get help from religion, and most of arts have gotten influence of religion.
今回のテーマで二回書き込みましたが、言いたいことをうまく表現できなくてモヤモヤしていたんです。

（テーマとは関係ないのですが）
「I don't have ○○」と「I have no ○○」の違いがわかりません。日本語にすると同じような意味になりますが、ニュアンスの違いがあるのでしょうか？
例えば、「私は当分の間、旅行の計画がありません」と言いたいとき、
→ I don't have a plan for travel for a while.
→ I have no plan for travel for a while.
どちらを使った方がいいのでしょう？
（この英文が正しいかどうかも不安ですが…）
どなたか教えてください。

う～ん、これは難しいですね。 ‘have no ○○’なんて日本語にない形だし。 考えてみたんだけど、私は「I don't have a ○○」と「I have no ○○」にはあまり違いを感じてないかな。 どっちも同じように使いそうだけど、いい易さとかで選んでるかも。 う～ん、でもただ｢ない｣なら‘don't have’で、｢全然ない｣感じなら‘have no’の方を選ぶかなぁ・・。 でも｢全然、ひとつも、全くない｣感じなら‘I don't have any ○○’にするかな。 ‘I don't have any ○○’と‘I have no ○○’だったらニュアンスがちょっと違うと思うんだけど・・。 ごめんね、答えになってないよね。 他のみんなの意見はどうだろう・・？
「私は当分の間、旅行の計画がありません」を英語にするなら、私だったら｢当分旅行に行くつもりはない｣と日本語を変換し直すかな。。
もっと色々書きたいのだけど、明日は朝から大忙しなので。。 （中学校→小学校→中学校と学校をはしごしないと～。 どうして同じ日に行事なのかしら。。） 土曜日は法事、日曜日は末娘の幼稚園１日入園。 忙しい週末になりそうです。。

Hi Amica and Tomo,
noとnotの違いについて、日ごろ何気なく使っているのでいざ説明をとなると難しいですね。ここでの"don't have a plan"と"have no plan"は両方OKだと思います。no~の方が意味が強まるのではないかしら。例えば、"Not anybody came here." より" Nobody came here." の方が、意味が強まるように。また"I have no idea about ~" など意見を求められ、考えが思いつかない場合など良く使います。 あと、慣用句としての~no OO は、そのまま覚えてるしかないと思っています。not は動詞以下を否定、noは形容詞として用いられ、名詞を否定、がまず原則としてきますね。（例外あり）
私のわかる範囲で書いてみました。

Hi everyone,
このブログに参加してはじめてのトピックが宗教についてだとは、ハードルが高い！英語じゃあ書けません（＾＾；）難しい問題だし。
私の家は昔から信仰があるのであまり深く考える間もなく自然とその中にいました。私も欧米の宗教感というものはよくわからないし、まして信仰とはなにか宗教とは何かなんて考え出したらわけわからなくなってしまいます。でも、自分の生きる中の支えになったりするんじゃないのかなぁ。もちろんそれを人に強制させるのは間違っていると思う。
神様を信じてるの？って言われたら正直１００％信じてますとは言えないんだけど、でも、両親やそのまた両親が信仰していたから私も今信仰心が少しでもあることには感謝しています。
信仰があってもなくても、それはその人の自由なのだから。
何が言いたいんだか自分でもよくわからなくなってきました。思ってることを文章にするのって難しい。宗教問題は難しいよ。

Hi David,
The ideas of religion, it's a difficult topic to talk about in English. Hmm.., I'm a typical Japanese, so I'm not religious. I sometimes go to a shrine to make a wish like ○○祈願, 厄払い, but I don't believe in God. For me, it's just a ceremony or maybe 気休め. It's really hard to understand about religious wars and issues. I think it is free to believe in God(any Gods) if you want or need it, but religions should help people or their hearts, not make them crazy.
何かを信じて強くなれたり救われたりするのはいいと思うけど、周りに押し付けたり、信じるものが違う人と争ったりするのは違うと思います。 ‘もしも’、神様がいるとしたら、人を傷つけたりなんて許すはずがないと思うし、それを許すならそれは‘神様’じゃなく、信じるに値しないと思います(これは私のイメージです)。 信じる信じないは自由だけど、誰も傷つけず、巻き込まずにして欲しいです。 う～ん、でも私には宗教に縛られるのは理解できないなぁ・・。 ‘宗教’と聞くと、｢怖い・関りたくない｣というのが正直なところです。 My opinion is the second thought too.
