The Dover Case

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all your top ten lists. Yuki - I was a big fan of Queen as well, and I was very sad when Freddie died, but I was lucky enough to have the chance to see him perform when I was in high school. It was the 'A Kind of Magic' tour, and I saw the concert at Knebworth Park in England with a crowd of about 150,000 people. I remember the crowd going wild when Freddie walked on stage and said, "Hello again my beauties". Actually, I think that is one moment of my life I will never forget.

Anyway, I want to jump back to our topic of religion for a short time because I have found something that might be interesting for many of you...

Some of you said that you were surprised when Steve told you about the idea of Intelligent Design and the challenge to the Theory of Evolution because you had never heard of it before. I knew that there had been several court cases in the U.S. regarding the teaching of Intelligent Design (ID) in schools, but on Richard Dawkins' website, I found a link to a one-hour documentary programme which tells the story of the legal battle between members of a school committee in a small town in the U.S. and the parents of some of the children. This is not an anti-religion documentary - it just tells the story of what happened. Actually, the programme gives lots of time to both sides to explain their ideas. The reason I wanted to share it with you is that I think it is very useful for learners of English because:
1. The show is split up into short chapters of about 7 minutes.
2. The narrator speaks slowly and clearly.
3. You can watch it with English subtitles.
4. The whole transcript of each chapter is written out on the same page, so you can read it first and then watch the programme, or watch the programme and then read the transcript to check your understanding.

Basically, the story relates to what Steve was talking about - the idea of Intelligent Design. Some members of a school board in a town called Dover in the U.S. decided that children should be taught about ID in their science classes. Many of the science teachers refused, and some of the parents started a legal case to stop the school teaching ID because the United States Supreme Court had already ruled in another case that it was unconstitutional to teach religion in science classes. This is because of the principle of the U.S. constitution that religion should be separate from government so that no one religious group can try to gain power and force people to accept its views. Anyway, the documentary tells the story of the whole case from start to finish. The judge in the trial was appointed by George Bush, who is well-known for his religious beliefs, and the case became a huge news story all over America and even the world. At the end, the finding of the judge was that ID is not a scientific theory, and that it cannot be taught in American schools as part of the science curriculum. Sadly, as is often the case for people who oppose religious groups, he received many death threats, and he and his family had to be given 24-hour bodyguard protection. I know that would be unthinkable in Japan, but it is a reality in many countries around the world, and that is why some people (like me) are so strongly against religion.

But whatever you think about religion, it is really interesting to see how strongly divided American people are on this issue. As I said, I knew some of the story because it was big news at the time, but there were many details I had not heard. If you have the time to watch the programme, it will give you a deeper understanding of the issues involved and the things that people are disagreeing about. Did you work today? Today is Labor Thanksgiving Day(もう昨日ですが・・). ご苦労さまです＾＾

Children should be taught about ID in their science classes??? No way! How can ID be science???
Yes, I was surprised when Steve told us about the idea of Intelligent Design, but it was not because I had never heard of it before. I had never heard of the word 'Intelligent Design', but I have hard of the story that the world was created in 7 days by a God as a fairy story, like Noah's Ark. The most surprising thing for me was that there were actually people who believe ID was true, even though they are mature adults, live in the modern world. I hadn't met people who really believe it before.

I watched the chapter 1 of the programme, but I couldn't understand it because there were too many words I didn't know, so I'm reading the transcript now. It's interesting, but it's too long..
Anyway, I'll try to keep going as much as I can.

Hi Tomo,

There are a lot of new words in the programme, but if you can struggle through chapter 1, you will find that you keep meeting the same words again and again, so it gets a lot easier.

Like you, I was surprised when I found out how many people still believe the story of the bible. Most Japanese people do not understand the power that religion has in America. Recently, there was an article in a newspaper I read saying that of ten possible candidates to be the next Republican Party presidential nominee, seven believe that the earth and everything in it was created less than 4000 years ago by God in exactly the way the bible describes.

I don't want to go into a long discussion about the rights and wrongs of religion again, but given that America is the most powerful and influential country in our modern world, I do think it is important that people in other countries (like Japan) understand the role that religion plays in American life.

Let me know what you think after you watch a few more chapters.

Hi,David

I took a look at the programme and read the titles
from Chaper 1 to 12. They look very difficult for me to understand . But reading your previous comment helps me to know what was going on at American Court,and I felt relieved because the judge was that ID is not a scientific theory,and that it cannot be taught in American schools as part of the science curriculum.

I can't agree with the idea of the story that the world was created in 7 days by God ,but I have a
wonder how natural processes were set in motion
and they still function optimally...just　like 地球が太陽から、ちょうどいい距離の所にあって、もし、少しでも近すぎてたら表面が熱すぎて生命は生まれず、逆に少しでも遠すぎたら、冷たすぎて生命は生まれなかったはずなのに。。。とか、so I might be persuaded by Steve at this point.

Hi David and Everyone,

Thank you for introducing impressive program. I 've watched(listened) roughly from chapter 1 to 12, and it was helpful to understand from both side -science and intelligent design ,and from many standpoints. I know the story of bible(not believe) ,and through this program -through the process of definition of each idea; science,evolution, creationism and ID, I could understand these ideas more clearly. I'm relieved with the judge's decision that ID is not taught in its science curriculum at school. But I'm still impressed with the explanation of evolution by Steve which was completely new to me.
Anyway, thanks again, it gave me a chance to know and think about religion. I'll check each chapter later, and it 's also a good chance to know new words!

Hi David,

I've finished to watch chapter 3 and read the transcript.
In chapter 2, the Narrator says, 'somewhere between a third and half the US population does not accept evolution.' A third and half the US population!! How many people?? Oh no, it's hard to believe, hard to understand... What I can't understand is that why and how they can believe such unlikely story. God created everything? By using magic or something? Is it possible that one day human beings show up on the earth? 普通に考えたら it can't happen. でも私の‘普通’なんて狭い考えなのかもしれません。　でもそれを信じるのはサンタクロースや魔法使いの存在を信じるのと同じくらいの感覚です。　だから何の迷いもなく信じている人を見ると、ただただビックリしてしまいます。　でも信じてる人は私が思っていたよりずっとたくさんいるみたいですね。
As you say, it is important that people in other countries (like Japan) understand the role that religion plays in American life. We Japanese people should know more about religious issues. The power that religion has is much bigger and heavier than I thought. How about in your country? (確か前に日本と似ていると言っていたような気がしますが・・)

このブログのおかげで、今まで考えたこともなかった宗教について色々考えました。　色々なことを知って（まだまだ知るべきことがたくさんあると思いますが）、たくさん考えさせられたけど、でもやっぱり私は宗教は怖いと思っています。　宗教は人の心の奥深くに入り込んで、良くも悪くも人の心を簡単に動かすから。　世の中には宗教の他にもたくさん危険なものがあるけど、例えば車も銃もナイフも持つ人の心次第だから、その心を簡単に動かしてしまう宗教はそれ以上に怖いのかもしれないと思っています。　武器は取り上げられるけど、人の心は取り上げられないから。
昔々から人がいるところに文化があって、宗教がある。　気が遠くなるような長い時間が経ってるのに、宗教争いはなくならない。　何故そんなにも変われないのでしょうか。　変化を受け入れるのを拒んでいるように感じてしまいます。
私のように何も知らない人間が、宗教問題を知ることによって何かが変わる一歩になるなら、無関心ではなく知らなくちゃいけないのかな・・と思いました。　番組、もう少し頑張って見てみますね。

I have three of the Queen's dvds. The Magic tour is the best one of them. Especially I like the part which Freddie is singing "Love Of My Life" with the audience in chorus. Huge crowd of people are as if surging waves.


宗教について（英語じゃかけない）・・・

私自身は無宗教なんですけど、新興宗教は論外として、宗教自体は素晴らしいと思っています。
というのも、貧困地区の自立支援活動をするNGO団体（母体がキリスト教）でボランティアをしている関係で、本当に素晴らしく尊い心で活動を支えている多くのキリスト教徒の方に直接お会いしているからです。キリスト教徒からの個人の寄付というのもすごくて、世界各国1００拠点以上の支援金として２０数億ドルが毎年集まります。

もちろん、支援活動をするのはキリスト教徒の方ばかりじゃないですし、それにキリスト教徒のみなさんが、全員マザー・テレサのように、サリー２枚とカーディガンしか自分の持ち物を持たず、人生の全てを貧しい人たちに捧げてるわけじゃないです。
ただ、私が会った信者さん達は、愛を与えることを喜びとしてる人たちばかりだし、何もかもできなくても、何かしなくてはという使命感に溢れてる人ばかりです。

当たり前のことですけど、本当の宗教家というのは、戦争なんて絶対に反対だし、他宗教の信者だって、困っていれば喜んで救うのです。要するに、宗教＝戦争、宗教＝洗脳っていうのは、似非宗教の話であって、それと宗教を一緒にしてはいけないと思うんです。だって、私の知ってる信者さんたちを、詐欺師のような教祖に、必死こいて寄付活動してる人と一緒にするのは可哀想すぎるもの。。。

聞くところによると、合衆国では、貧しいエスパニッシュ系の移民が増えたことで、救いを求め似非宗教に入信する人口が相当増えているそうです。仏教も人気だそうで、創価学会なんかも合衆国でも勢力拡大中だとか・・・。（すでに議員も選出してるらしい）
残念ながら、真の宗教家は奉仕に明け暮れていて世の中から忘れ去られて、ただ救って欲しいばかりの信者からなる新興宗教がはびこっていくのでしょうか・・・。
宗教問題っていうより、自由競争社会のひずみを感じます。

Hi David,

I I've finished to watch and read up to chapter 5.
Like you said, it's very interesting to see how strongly divided American people are on this issue. It really surprises me.
I learned about evolution at school, but I didn't know much about it. I didn't know the discovery of the transitional fossil which is called Tiktaalik, and I was surprised when I heard that whales evolved from large land animals that returned to the water! It's very interesting.
As you said, I keep meeting the same words again and again in the programme, and it's getting easier, so I'll keep going.

Hi David,

Actually, before watching this program, I didn't realize well how big this issue was ; science teacher had to move to another place because of this problem , even though I knew religion affected American so much. While watching this program, I remembered one scene of " megachurch"(massive attendant, 2000 or above, and most of them are Protestant)which I knew through TV , and it felt something fanatical(狂信的）.( It is a little apart from evolution and ID issue.)
And I noticed that many books and magazines were published including 'Tme' about this topic in recent years as you said.

Hi everyone, I was visiting friends in Dallas last week for Thanksgiving, looks like the topic of religion is a popular topic--thanks Dave!
When I read people's comments and saw the links, a proverb came to mind:
“The first to present his case seems right,
till another comes forward and questions him.”

Basically it means if only one point of view is presented, it will seem to be the correct one. Since David has basically presented the NOVA program as his point of view, I’ll provide a my point of view based on some of the sources I will list at the end.

Critical Thinking in US education
An important part of the educational system in the United States is ‘critical thinking.’ Critical thinking is defined: “the mental process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing and evaluating information to reach an answer or conclusion. “–dictionary.com. Simply put, ‘critical thinking’ is personally taking all the facts from all points of view, thinking about them, then making a decision about the subject.
The school system in the United States is designed to promote ‘critical thinking.’ During my school years, I was encouraged to ask questions, do my own research, analyze facts and then draw my own conclusions. An important part of this process, is recognizing ‘bias.’ Bias is defined as ” to cause partiality or favoritism in (a person); influence, especially unfairly.”–dictionary.com

In any form of media: newspapers, televison, movies, podcasts, etc., the author has total control of how what the article or TV program shows. Since this is true, recognizing ‘bias’ becomes a very important key to finding the truth.
If the author is ‘biased’ toward a certain point of view, then naturally he or she will choose ‘facts’ and present them in a way to support his or her point. The NOVA program is no exception.

Is the NOVA Program Biased?
Paula Aspell, NOVA’s excutive producer( the person who had 100% control of program content) was interviewed about why she wanted to make the program. Aspell said, “I think the real reason why I made that decision [to make Judgment Day] is because evolution is the foundation of the biological sciences. As one famous biologist said, ‘Nothing in biology makes sense except through the lens of evolution,’”

In another interview she says:...It’s a scientific issue. I really believe that if people understood the science, saw why it was so essential to modern biology, and understood that it’s not at all incompatible with religion, then we would have much less conflict over it in this country.”

So, by her own words she has expressed her bias toward evolution. I really would not expect the program to present both sides fairly.

Next, we can look at some specific facts or ideas presented.

The US Constitution and Separation of Church and State
The First Amendment of the Constitution reads:
‘Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. “
The interpretation of this amendment has been contested in the United States for many years. So a complete discussion is impractical. A little history of the US, may help understand what the original Americans meant when they wrote this. The original colonists who came to America left England due to religious persecution. They wanted to practice their religion how they wanted and not how the state Church of England dictated. This might explain why they did not want a “state” religion. In this case does the First Amendment apply? Is Intelligent Design a religion?

Creationism and Intelligent Design are the same.
Creationism is a Biblical belief that states that God created everything in the universe in 6 days and then rested on the 7th.
Intelligent Design is a theory that recognizes that the complexities seen in the universe are too many to have happened by random chance and that they indicate work by an Intelligent Designer.

The Dover school board wanted Intelligent Design to be taught alongside evolution in the science classroom and this lead to the trial.
FALSE After the school board rejected the Intelligent design book, the school board recommended that the teachers read a statement before teaching evolution stating that there are gaps that evolution cannot explain. The statement also read that an intelligent design book was available in the library for people who wanted to learn more about ID. This was what lead to the trial. People opposed the reading of the statement in the classrooms.

Scientific Expert Testimony at the Trial
NOVA claimed that Scott Minnich, a pro-ID scientist did not testify during the trial to defend his research.
FALSE He did testify.

NOVA claimed that other pro-ID scientists chose not to testify in the trial.
FALSE
They wanted to testify, but their request to have their own lawyer there was denied. As a result, more pro-evolution ‘experts’ testified at the trial, giving a ‘bias’ toward evolution.

Who Defines what Science means?
NOVA interviewed seven pro-evolution scientists to define what science means.
A unbiased program would ask pro-ID and pro-evolution scientists.

Gaps that Science can not explain
Robert Pennock, pro-evolution scientist from Michigan State University says,
“You can’t have gaps that you fill in by appeal to miracles,” This means that ID scientists try to fill in the gaps by saying that God must have created everything miraculously.

Evolution tries to fill in the gaps by “macro evolution.” An example of macro evolution is an ape changing into a man. Never has been proved. Never has been seen in experiments.

A reason schools should not teach Intelligent Design according to NOVA’s teacher’s guide

“The federal courts have ruled that creationism, creation science, and intelligent design are not science but instead endorse a specific religious belief. Therefore, these topics are not appropriate content for a science classroom.
A political reason. Not a scientific reason.

Fossil “Tiktaalik rosae “ as evidence of Evolution
NOVA says that the fossil, “...clearly indicate[s] Darwinian evolution in action,” of the transition between amphibians and reptiles. The ‘clearly’ indicates that NOVA means it is absolute proof. But it is not. The problem with this fossil is that it is incomplete. There are only bones, the fins and tail do not exist. Evolutionists have to ‘guess’ what they looked like. Again, filling in a gap with a ‘guess.’.


Evolution is compatible with a belief in God.
FALSE
The Evolution philosophy is based specifically on the idea that there is no God. How can it be compatible with a belief in God.

Conclusion:
NOVA program is bias toward Evolution.
