The news

Hi Everyone,

Did you have a good weekend? I went out on my new bike on Saturday. I rode up to Chausu Yama, and I also rode around some back roads near my house. Every time I go out on my new bike (the BMW), I keep being amazed by what a beautiful country Japan is. My other bike is really just for going very fast, and it is not very comfortable, so I like to stay on roads I know, but the new bike is great for exploring. On Saturday, I managed to 're-find' a fantastic spot for looking at the autumn leaves near a small temple in the mountains. I first found that place last year, but I couldn't remember exactly where it was, and I have been trying to find it again ever since. Actually, that happens to me a lot because I keep looking for exciting new places, finding them, and then forgetting where I found them a few weeks later. I really should start making notes!

Today's topic is 'news'. I used to watch the BBC news every morning, but I stopped because the quality of the reporting was so terrible, and the news was so depressing. Have you ever heard of a woman called Kate Adie? She was one of the BBC's best-known war reporters. I went to hear her give a lecture in NZ when I was there, and she talked about how the reporting of news has changed in recent years. In the past, the only purpose of TV news was to tell people what was happening. Now, however, TV news also has to be entertaining. In fact, a new English word has been created to describe this - infotainment.

When I was a child, TV news reporters like Kate Adie used to go all over the world following news stories, find out what was happening, and then come on the TV news to tell us what they had found. Now, however, we have 24-hour news channels, and reporters no longer have any time to do any real reporting. Kate Adie said that during the first Iraq war, the BBC reporter was filmed standing on top of a hotel in Baghdad giving a report on the situation. In fact, that reporter was just reading from a script prepared by the studio back in London, and she didn't really know anything more about the real situation in Iraq than the people watching the TV.

Nowadays, outside reports are often presented in the form of a conversation between the studio presenter and the reporter. These conversations became so stupid that I couldn't bear to watch anymore, so I gave up on the BBC. I remember one conversation about the train bombings in Madrid a few years ago. The studio presenter asked the reporter (I am not joking about this!), "How strong is the feeling among Spanish people of wanting to find whoever planted these bombs?" Well, I don't think you need to go to Spain to find the answer to that question! Not surprisingly, the reporter answered, "As you can imagine, it's quite strong!" It felt like they were reporting the news for children!

These days, I just check the Internet for news every morning. It's actually quite interesting because you see articles from lots of different newspapers, so you can get different viewpoints on the same story. This week, I have been following the story I mentioned before about the British primary school teach in the Sudan who was jailed for allowing her 7-year-old students to call a teddy bear 'Muhammed'. If you are interested, have a look at google.co.uk and click on 'news'.

Anyway, I was wondering how many of you watch the news on TV, how many of you like to read newspapers, and how many of you use the Internet like me. Maybe some of you don't follow the news at all? Actually, it is usually so depressing that trying to ignore it may be better for your health!

Look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Hi Blue Dream,
Congratulations!
I'm glad to hear you and your baby are doing well.

Hi amo,
Are you OK now? Take care of yourself.

Hi Lily,
You moved to Tokyo?
I support your new challenge.

Hi Maki,
How have you been?
I'm glad to read your comment again.

Hi Tomo,
Thanks for sharing lots of jokes you found.
They were very interesting!

Hi Anne,
The picture book you love sounds lovely.
I want to read it.

Hi Ayako,

About the topic "news", I will write later.

See you soon,

Amica

Hi David,

Today's topic is 'news'. Hmm, I don't follow the news at all. I don't watch the news on TV and don't read newspapers, even the fliers. I use the Internet every day, but it is not for following the news.
Actually, I don't like watching TV so much. My husband loves to watch TV, and the TV in my house is always on when he is at home. I sometimes watch(or hear) the news when he is watching it on TV. He says I should watch the news once a day, and I know I should know about what is happening in Japan or in the world, but I always don't feel like doing it..
'It is usually so depressing that trying to ignore it may be better for your health', I loved this idea! I'll use that excuse next time my husband says to me 'Watch the news.'(笑)

By the way, I had a look at google.co.uk, and read the news you mentioned. It says that the teacher was released! She only allowed her 7-year-old students to call a teddy bear 'Muhammed' and was arrested. It couldn't be true, it couldn't happen.

Good night and see you soon,

Tomo

PS Maki, look forward to catching up with you!

PPS Amica, how is your finger?

Hi David and everyone,

I watch the news on TV every day, read newspapers and use Internet now and then when I read them in English. And I like all of them. I didn't know the word "infotainment", but I feel news shows are in such a situation; now there are many news shows and among them there are such programs that producers of the program seem to focus on catching eyes of viewers rather than contents of news themselves. In recent years' many " Yarase" problems might be good examples. My husband often says to me, " You jump into the news, and believe them easily, but you should have an eye to consider them from many aspects".
I often use Internet to follow the news, too; reading news on BBC or CNN is a good way to study English, and to know how UK or America write about the topic in Japan, good to see from different points of view.
By the way, I didn't know about Kate Adie, but I could read the article about her and listen to her ten minutes' witty interview on BBC Radio 4 program" Woman's hour" about her experience.

Bye for now,

Anne

Hi David and Everyone,

Tomo

Hi bleu moon!

Congratulations!
I am glad to hear from you again.
You must have been busy with your baby, but please come and see us (?) sometimes.

Hi amica and Tomo

Thank you for your sympathy. I think I am healthy person, but once I catch a cold, I can’t get rid of it easily, especially in winter. Because I grew up in Okinawa. I cannot get used to cold season still it has been ages since I left there!!!
By the way amica, how is your finger? Have you had your stitches out?

Hi ayako.
yourジャイアンと馬場 story made me laugh.

Hi Lily
How is your new life in Tokyo?
It sounds interesting to study translation, but I am not good at Japanese, so it’s difficult for me. Anyway, GO FOR IT!!!!

Hi David

I will write a comment about topic later in this week.

About the news, I didn't follow them at all. Nevertheless, I think the internet is the best way to see what's happening, because you can look for anything you want to know, and you can negrect the news that you are not interested. Also, I think it important to see a news in some different points of view, and the internet enables you to see many sourses.
Bye now!

Hi Everyone,
I usually watch the news on TV. I used to read the newspaper -- at least the headlines -- but now that I live by myself, I don't subscribe to any papers. I download some English news podcasts like BBC and CNN on my ipod and listen to them on the train. That is my way of practicing listening to English and keeping up on current events at the same time. It was on the BBC podcast that I heard the news about the British teacher in Sudan. I'm glad to hear she was released. As for Japanese news programs, I think they should broadcast more about current issues in the world. We know too little about issues, say, in Africa where lives of tens of thousands of people are at stake. But, having said that, I prefer good or entertaining news to depressing news, really.

Bye for now.

Hi Tomo and amo,
Thanks.
My finger is better now.
Tomorrow, I'm going to go to the hospital, and the stitches of my finger will be removed.

amo,
You grew up in Okinawa?
Actually, I have 3 days off next week, so I'm going to go to Okinawa with my friend.
We love 沖縄料理, so we are going to eat various 沖縄料理.

Hi Anne and Lily,
You are reading or listening the news of BBC and CNN?
That's great!
I can't do it because it is too difficult to do it, but someday I want to try it.

Hi David and Everyone,
I read a newspaper every morning, and sometimes I watch the news on TV.
When I have a news I'm interested in, I use Internet to read about the news.
I think there are lots of TV news they have been confusing with TV gossip show in the recent Japan, and as Panda said, it's important to see the news
in some different points of view.
So, maybe we should use Internet when we want to check news.

By the way, I have a question.

Amica

Hi Everyone,
It was a crazy day today, and I'm exhausted.. Sorry, my 'English brain' doesn't work well today too.

Hi Amo,

Hi Panda,

Hi Lily,
ipod! 。

Hi Amica,
Does that help?
By the way, 明日抜糸なの?

See you soon,

Tomo

Hi David and everyone

I don’t read newspapers. I just watch the news on TV, but I don’t like it, because it makes me feel blue. Like Tomo said, lately we heard a lot of bad (sad?) news. Political scandal, parricide, juvenile crime and so on…..
I heard the man who killed eight people and then himself in USA, this morning. When I watched it on TV, I just thought AGAIN??

Hi Tomo.

You never been to Okinawa? You should go to. Yes, we have beautiful ocean.
I remember when I saw the snow at the first time. It was in April, and I was in the room and then I went out to touch the snow. Hehehe.

Hi amica.

Are you going to Okinawa?
Enjoy Okinawan foods.
I was going to write about your question, but Tomo already answered it.
例えば
A: Do you believe me?
B: yes. I believe you.
A: Are you sure?
B: yes. I DO believe you.

Tomo
Yeah, it’s so depressing to hear about family members and relatives killing each other. I also can’t believe that so many kids kill themselves without even talking to their parents about their problems. It’s just so wrong.
“文明の機器”? Nah, mine is iPod Shuffle, and it’s sooo simple and compact.

Amo,
Thanks for your encouragement. You are from Okinawa, are you? I’ve been there once. I’d love to go again -- especially during winter! :-)
I know what you mean. We hear dreadful news so often that we become numb, which is even more dreadful …

Panda,
Yeah, it’s too bad we lost Murasaki. That’s why we need you even more than before, Panda!

Amica,
Tomo and Amo answered your question already (Thanks, guys!), but I just wanted to say that you always ask good questions. It’s good for all of us. So keep doing it!
I guess you’ve got used to using English by now. You’ll start reading/listening to the news in English before long :-)

Have a nice weekend!

Hi Everyone,

Sorry I didn't do a new entry today - I went back to Nagoya Women's University today to do some recordings of student conversations for my research. It was nice to see everyone again.

Hi Amo, I thought exactly the same as you when I saw that news - again??! But most Americans really do not want to give up their right to have guns, so I suppose this kind of thing will just keep happening.

Amica - thanks for your question (and thanks Tomo for answering it.) Recently, we have been doing a lot of discussions, but whatever we are talking about, it is always okay to ask questions about English. There are lots of people who will answer you if there is something you are not sure of.

Anyway, I have to work tomorrow, but I'm hoping that I will be able to go out on my bike on Sunday. I will do another entry on Monday.

Have a great weekend,

David

Hi Tomo and amo,
Thanks for explaining!
I understood it.
Today, I went to the hospital.
When the stitches of my finger were removed, I had pain a little, but I'm OK now.

Hi Liliy and David,

Have a nice weekend!

Amica

Hi Everyone,
Are you having a good weekend? I made sukiyaki for dinner tonight. I love one-pot cooking because it's very easy!

Hi David,
Are you finished with your work? I checked the weather report on the Internet, and it says that the weather will be fine, occasionally cloudy in Nagoya tomorrow, so if you don't have to work, you can go out on your bike. Are you going to look for exciting new places tomorrow too? I think it's a good idea to make notes so that you won't forget the places you found, but 're-finding' a fantastic spot sounds fun, and I think you'll be happy when you find it again. Have fun!

By the way, as I said, I don't follow the news at all, but if you let me know some interesting news on the blog, I'll follow it.

Lily - I have no idea what 'iPod Shuffle' is..
Like you said, we are getting numb. Terrible news don't surprise me so much. It's really dreadful..

Amica - I'm glad to hear you are getting better!

Hope you are enjoying your weekend,

Tomo

Hi David
I think so, too. They (Americans) won’t change their minds to have the guns, even these kinds of thing happen again and again.
anyway, I hope you can ride your bike on Sunday!!!

Hi Lily
Yes, you’re right. About the man who I mentioned last comment, if I think of the feeling of the bereaved families of the victims, I shouldn’t have said “again?” though, I become numb, because of hearing a lot of dreadful news.…..

Hi David,
Long time not see.. I'm glad to hear that you haven't changed at all, especially riding bike.

I've married and started reading newspaper and watching news in these days(because of my husband job, you know).

Despite the quality of news, I'm worried the number of the murders. I think Japan is getting crazy...

Sorry, I posted my last comment on the previous page by mistake. My brain seems to have weakened as well as my legs because I was in bed for a long time. I still have difficulty standing up and going up stairs!

Hi Mirei,
Welcome to the blog! Are you David's friend? It's nice to have you with us. I also think Japan is getting crazy..

Hi Blue Dream,
Good morning, how are you? It sounds like you are having hard days. Are you all right? Your comment remained me of my hard days(after childbirth). It was really hard going up stairs.. I hold on tight to the handrail when I was going up, but I didn't when I was going down(I should have been careful), and I fell down stairs after doing the laundry(I didn't get hurt, though), so be careful when you walk down stairs!
If you need rehabilitation for your brain, please use this blog;-)
Don't push yourself and take care.

Hi David,
I saw the movie 'Babel' on DVD last night. It made me think, but it was a bit difficult(kind of heavy..) Does the movie tell us that a gun can cause a lot of grief and suffering? I'd like to know what happened to all the characters after that.

See you soon,

Tomo

Hi Blue Dream,
How are you feeling today?
Yes, I delivered second son normally. It's really old story, so I'm not sure recent situation. In my case, he was born two weeks early the due date and small(2800g); that might be one of the reasons I delivered normally.
I hope you are feeling better soon.

Anne

Hi again Blue Dream,
I'm not sure the baby's weight '2800g' is small or not,but my elder son's weight was 3765g, so compared with that, he looked so small!

Anne

Hello, David and Tomo-san.
Thank you for your compliments to my writing I wrote last month. I can write a comment just once a month or so, but I enjoy reading and writing here.

Anne-san, nice to meet you, too! My husband's sleeping face is cute and funny(!) I sometimes can't help taking a snap of his face with my cellphone.

I get news from TV, newspapers and the Internet. I think watching TV is the easiest and most accessible way to get news for most people. We don't have to read any letters on TV. Just listening and viewing the images, we can immediately get some information. And we can also easily change the channels. We can get more detailed information from any channels.
So I think news programs have been more and more provocative and entertaining to stay viewers at each channel.

I sometimes watch a certain evening news on TV. A female anchor has appeared in the program for so many years. But I've never seen that she comments outside the studio. And she often criticizes matters foolishly and tries to make them scandalous ones. I really wonder why she has been the face of the program for such a long time. I wonder whether it could be OK that anchors just play such a roll.

Commentators in general seem to express their opinions much freelier than before. But I recently see a strange phenomenon. A program itself sometimes covers news sensationally, but the commentators who appear in the program criticize the coverage, like "The standpoint of the news is wrong!" I mean that the program first stirs up the viewers' interests offensively, and second, the commentator expresses his/her opinions modifing the way of the coverage. So I sometimes can't get what the news programs want to tell us.

I'm fed up with some reporters. They often spend too much time to report silly things.
At the interview to demand an apology from Kameda Koki, the reporters showered him with similar ridiculous questions.
As for the murder case of two kids and their grandmother, the reporters chased and interviewed a certain man persistently, and as a result, the reports implanted doubts on the man in our mind. Their interviews which seemed to pretend sympathy for him was as much as to say that he could be a murderer, and that the interviews would be good news items after arresting him.

A few months ago, I was really shocked at a Japanese journalist's death in Burma. Did everyone see the scene that he was shot at close range? Even after he fell onto the ground, he was tring to take photos of the people running away hunted by the military. We have lost one of the great reporters for ever.

A lot of news are surely complicated and depressing. But I think we should not keep away from them. My mother often complains, "There is no good news! I can't stand to watch such news!" and doesn't watch any of them. So she knows nothing of the world. I don't want to be like her. But in fact, I'm sometimes embarrassed when I'm asked about the news inside and outside of Japan because I really don't know them.
We should get lots of information, and understand what are happening now in our society. We should exchange our ideas and opinions about them. If we can do so, we can consider any problems much deeplier, and solve them in much better ways.
As Anne said, I also think that it is important to view matters from various points. I sometimes enjoy finding new ideas while I talk about news with other people.

We who take part in this blog can exchange our thoughts in English. It means that we can exchange our ideas with much more people outside Japan. It's our great merit! Let's get lots of news and talk!

By the way, writing this comment, I remembered the song "Silent Night" sung by Simon & Garfunkel. In the background of the song, we can hear a newscaster reading news. In the song, their certain message is put into.

Anyway, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all!

Just wished to mention your blog is incredibly good. I usually prefer to hear some issue new about this mainly because I actually have the similar blog in my Country on this subject so this help´s me lots. I did a search on a subject matter and observed a awfully sensible range of blogs but nothing like this. Thanks for sharing such a lot in your blog.

I absolutely agree with everything Amy said. In the beginning the show was supposed to be about two brothers, their lives, problems and rivalry over the same girl, but it soon became more about Peytons and Brookes relationship than anyting else. We cared about it and watched it go through so many happy or angry moments for 6 years and after all the talk about being there for each other, Peyton is not gonna be there for the wedding? They have to convince Hilarie just for the one episode. Dont think though that Lucas is needed there.

worky, some people like to try to speak posh kidda, ime lucky to try to speak any kind of garb m8

Maybe it's just my Georgia Tech bias talking, but it seems like Maxie Baughan should get in before Richter. Baughan had more career games, more Pro Bowls, more All-Pro selections, a far better weighted career AV, more raw career AV, and much better comps (5 HoFers, compared to Richter's zero).

That means we will buy oil from China.

If George W. Bush started it, fine.

Hi there! I simply wish to give an enormous thumbs up for the great data you might have right here on this post. I will probably be coming again to your blog for more soon.

Both Tim and Luke suffer from a typically American thinking problem. I bet you that the Japanese boys thought things out pretty well. They normally do better than producing Hummers when oil is expensive, depleting their entire economy in Iraq to satisfy the personal yearnings of the megalomaniac Bush, and spreading land mines on other folks farmland.Any step, no matter how small or inconsequential it may seem, to fat-assed over fed super-privileged people, is a step in the right direction, and should be encouraged.

Thanks for this article. Looking forward to another one.

To bad someone in front office has a thing for Pat the Bat,, he should be let go and be a bench coach I feel,, (to slow OF and on bases, will never come around with any constistancy at the plate) He is getting worse than better.. DeRosa should have been opening day starter in LF and still should be in there, more consistant abs and faster in field and on bases, and can play several positions,, his last abs showed he can hit if given the chance.. Belt should have started in AAA to pickup his hitting eye, he looks lost up there and to give him 2 months at the show to improve is unheard of and costs the teams offense,, short slups are one thing but after 30 abs you should be makeing more contact (pat and belt) ..
