Sone san's funeral
Hi Everyone,
Did you have a nice weekend? I went to Sone san's funeral on Saturday morning in Mizunami. As soon as I saw the room, I knew it would not be big enough. They ended up having to put chairs outside the door. I got there early, so I had a seat inside, but I offered it to a woman from Nagoya Women's University. It was really cold outside, but more than that, it was really, really sad. Sone san's father made a speech and told us a bit more about his daughter's sickness. Apparently, she went up to Niigata to try a new kind of treatment at a cancer research centre, but it didn't work.
I was amazed that her father was able to stand up and give a speech. I was nearly crying the whole time, and I think if someone had asked me to make a speech, I would have just burst into tears! He must be a very strong person.
I was thinking on Saturday night that at both the wake and the funeral, everyone was so sad and everything was so formal that we didn't really have time to talk to anyone. When we did talk, we talked about Sone san's death more than her life. I am going to ask some of her friends if we can get together for a celebration of her life once everyone has got over the shock of her death. When I looked at the people at the funeral, I realized that they saw just a part of the picture that was her life. For example, I knew the 'work' Sone san quite well, but I didn't know anything about her family life or her life as a student. I was thinking that if all the people who had these different pieces of the puzzle could get together, all of us would be able to get to know her better, even though she is no longer with us. I haven't talked to anyone about this yet, but I will give her best friend a call and ask what she thinks.
Apart from the funeral, I spent the whole weekend working because I am trying very hard to finish two books at the moment. I might ask you for some help checking one of them in the very near future. I hope you are all well, and that you had a great weekend.
Speak to you soon,
David

Hi David,
Sorry to hear that you didn't get a time for riding your bike, but I'm looking forward to your new books. Yes, we'll be happy to to help you, if we have a chance. :-)
Hi Kiyoko,
Belated welcome this blog! Let's enjoy learning English together. Hope your PC works well.;-)
Amica,
I try the test every year, but I know only some idioms, so that that part is always difficult for me.
You learn English very fast, so you will get higher score next time, as Tomo said!
The center test has started when I was a highschool student. At that time, its name was 共通一次試験. And most students took it are applicants for national universities. And then the system has been changed.
By for now,

Hi David,
You were in your office till the midnight!?
お疲れさまです。
But please don't overwork yourself.
Hi Everyone,
I'm going to have a piano recital by my students this April, so I gave tunes they play at the recital to my students.
When I decide their tunes, I play some tunes fit for their level to them.
After that, I ask them "Which tunes do you want to play?", and they choose from among them.
Of course, I did it again for this recital.
However, I received complaints from some of parents of my students.
They said to me "I want to change my daughter's (son's) tune."
There were a number of reasons.
"It is short", "I hope my daughter play more difficult tune than her friend.", "I don't like this tune."....
Their child wanted to play the tune, in spite of they asked me to change it.
Do you know the word "Monster parents"?
I think they are "Monster parents"!
Good night.

Good morning, David. You worked until that late last night? I know you have a healthy lifestyle(It's much healthier than mine), but you worked too much. Please get to bed early tonight and have a good sleep! 寝不足はお肌の大敵ですよ。(Just joking!)
Amica, "Monster parents"? It's a good expression!(I didn't know that.) I see a lot of Monster parents at my children's school. One of my friend calls them ‘宇宙人’. The number of 宇宙人 has been increasing recently, and I sometimes think, 'I am a 宇宙人??'(Maybe I am for them.) 侵略されてる気がします(笑) 負けずに頑張ってね^^
It's snowing here, and my children are very happy about that. They are like dogs.
Have a nice day!

Hi Ayae,
Nice to have you here and good luck with your exam.
Hi Amica,
You are going to have a piano recital by your student? I know the word"Monster Parents". They seem to complain to satisfy themselves (their desire),not thinking of their child's situation, don't they? Facing such a parents must be a hard working. I hope the recital in April will be successful .
It's raining , not snowing around here in Nagoya.

Hi Everyone,
I was a bit surprised at the news; snowing in Kanto area, even though it wasn't snowing in my area (in Hokkaido). The cyclone will come up here and it will be snowstorming tomorrow, according to the weather report. Take care, everyone!
Hi David,
You worked so hard yesterday、did you? Please take rest tonight. But I'm looking forward to your new books!:-)
Hi Amica,
I know the word "Monster Parents". I hear that a lot of school teachers are troubled by them these days. As Anne said, it must be very hard to manage such a situation. Hope everything will be going well with you. 頑張ってね!

I'm just wondering if your daughter feels well and can play with snow?!

Hi David and Everyone,
Have any of you noticed that we have another new member? Someone called Sasuke posted a comment on January 11th entry 'Another story'. Please have a look at it.
It's sunny today, and the snow has melted away. Maki, my daughter played with snow in our garden yesterday. It was just for a little while, but she looked very happy. She kept saying that she wanted to make a snowman, but the snow turned into rain soon, so she couldn't. She was very sorry about that. How's the weather up there? Snowstorm? Take care!
See you soon,
Tomo

Hi Tomo,
I'm glad to hear your daughter feels well.
She couldn't make the snowman?
I'm sorry about that.
But if your town has snow as heavy as she can make the snowman, most of adults who live in that town will have a tough time.(笑)
Hi Maki,
How is the weather in your area?
It has been storming with snow and rain since last night in my town.
It's really cold today!
Hi Sasuke,
Nice to meet you!
You lost 10 kilograms in about 2 months?
You are great!
Actually, I used to go to the gym for 2 years, despite it, I had gained weight, so I gave up it.
Don't you feel hungry after you got exercise?
I often felt it after that, and I couldn't control my appetite.
That's why I had gained weight....
The most important thing I need for diet may be control myself.
See you soon,

Tomo, Thank you for the letting us know about Sasuke! I'm glad that your daugher enjoyed playing with snow, even for a short time.
We had really bad weather this morning. When the wind was blowing heavily, I couldn't see anything at all. I was so nervous to drive a car. I barely reached my office without any problems. Some cars couldn't move with drifting snow and others crushed...

Hi David and everyone,
I've been continuing to read this blog every day now.
However, to make a comment every day or timely is very hard for me.
Therefore, I'm going to make a comment easily from now on.
Then I sometimes remember David's greeting and back to itl
Apart from New Year's Holiday, I was relaxed and thought about my English studing.
Someday I attended a well-known English teacher's meeting.
One senior person asked him.
My memorization is poor, so that I can't memorize new words, idioms and phrases, do you have any good idea?
He answered quickly as smilingly.
You'd better see a doctor.
At the same time, he gave us some hints.
One of the biggest hint was how to keep one's level with one's hole bucket.
The teacher recomeneded to keep a diary every day even if it was very short.
In my opinion, senior generation people commonly require reaction, even it was not directly.
So I took this way.
Luckily for me, I have been learning the PC by myself, so I decided to join in this blog.
Besides I sometimes listren David' [英語で仲直り」 program in ipod.
Please show me another opinion or idea, if someone know.

Hi Amica,
You are right. If it had snowed a lot, I would have had a tough time. I was hoping, "I wish it would stop snowing.."(笑)
Hi Maki,
You can drive a car on snow? You live in Hokkaido, so you need it.(must?) Actually, I have never driven a car on snow. Drifting snow? Crushed? It's scary! I hope you get to work safely every day. 気をつけてね^^
Hi Kiyoko,
The teacher said, 'You'd better see a doctor'? It was a funny joke, wasn't it? Memorizing new words, idioms and phrases, it's difficult for me too. To be honest, I don't do anything in particular for it. I just read this blog and make comments. Here is advice from me; read David's entries carefully. I think there are a lot of new expressions for you that you can understand, but you can't produce yourself. Then try to use them. If you use them many times, the English will be yours, I think. Actually, I have tried to write my diary in English before, but I gave up because it was not fun for me, and I couldn't keep it up. Taking a part this blog is a bit like to write your diary in English, but you can interact with someone on the blog, so I think it is much more interesting. Let's keep it up!
Hi Everyone,
I have a problem with my computer. I can't type the keys 'r' and 'y'. I can press the keys, but they don't work. Are you wondering how I am writing this comment? I copy and paste 'r' and 'y' when I need them! My computer is a laptop and about 3 years old. Should I get new one? If I have my laptop repaired, it takes a few weeks, I guess. I can't live without a computer for such a long time! I can read this blog with my cell phone, but it takes too much time to make a comment with it. ・・う~ん、どうしようかなぁ。。
By the way, it sometimes takes time until your comment appears on the blog after you clicked the post button, but don't click the post button again because the same comment will appear many times. When it takes time, try to click ‘戻る’, and click ‘更新’, then you will probably find your comment on the blog. I often do it. Just for your information;-)
See you soon,
Tomo

Hi Maki,
You had really bad weather yesterday?
How is today?
You were so nervous to drive a car on the snowy road?
I know how you feel.
Actually, the city I live has lots of snow every year.
(It has not heavy snowed yet this year, though)
When I drive on the snowy road, I get nervous.
I have experienced that I couldn't keep driving my car with heavy snow.
Hi Tomo,
Your computer has a problem?
And it is 3 years old?
買い換えるにはまだ早いような気もしますが…。
I'm sorry, I'm not good at a computer, so I can't give good advice to you.
Hi Kiyoko,
I agree with Tomo's advice.
It is difficult for me to memorizing new words, idioms and phrases.
However, I memorize them little by little by keeping that I write my comment on this blog.
I'm sure that the words (idioms and phrases) I use many times will be mine.
If I had been only reading without writing my comment on this blog, I would have not been able to memorize them.
覚えては忘れ、また覚えては忘れ…の繰り返しですが^^;
Let's keep it together!
Hi Everyone,
I have to go to the other city on my business tomorrow, but after that, I'm going to go to 温泉 in the city with my friends.
I'm going to eat special dinner and have a relaxation time!
Have a nice weekend!

Hi Everyone,
I have had a crazy day today. I had a meeting this morning with a guy who is going to help me design my next books, and then I went to another university to meet some teachers who are interested in using them from April. Actually, these books are only for use in English university classrooms, but one of them will be published by ALC in a slightly different version later this year.
Hi Kiyoko,
Don't worry about posting the same comment more than once. My mother made the same mistake, and I think almost everyone has done it at least once (including me!) When people ask me the best way to learn English, I tell them about a conversation I had with a Canadian in Sapporo who spoke really fluent Japanese. I asked him, "How did you learn Japanese so well? Just by studying and practising?" He said, "Do you know any other way?"
When he said that, I thought, "What a wonderful answer to a stupid question!"
There is no special way to learn a foreign language - it really is just a case of doing a lot of different kinds of study and hundreds and hundreds of hours of practice. The good news is that anyone can do it if they really want to. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. There are a lot of people here who will give you much better answers than me, but if nobody knows, I will check grammar books and call people who are cleverer than me until I find the answer.
Have a great weekend, and I will do a new entry on Monday or Tuesday.
David
PS Driving on snow and ice is easy. Riding a bike on snow and ice is not quite so simple! (And not many people are stupid enough to try it.)
- David
- 2008年1月25日 20:23
Hi David and Everyone,
David - Driving on snow and ice is easy?? I think you can say that because you are a good driver (and a rider, of course). You said, 'Riding a bike on snow and ice is not quite so simple!', but you tried it the other day, right? You really like challenging! ケガをしないように楽しんでくださいね^^
Actually, my husband has started to go to a driving school to get a motorcycle driver license. He asked me if it was okay on Christmas Eve after he gave me a surprise present. Wasn't it a smart way? How could I say 'No'?(苦笑) (He said he didn't mean it, though.) My husband works in a bank, and he moved to a new branch last year. There are some bikers in the branch, the branch chief, the assistant branch manager, and one of my husband's staff. They kept saying 'You should get a motorcycle driver license, and let's go for a ride!' Actually, my husband wanted to get it when he was in high school, but it was banned in his school. Besides, his big sister was working in a driving school in his town, so he couldn't break the school rule and gave up. He just got a driver license at that time. As time goes by, he forgot the feelings he had when he was young, but he seemed to remind it.
Now, he is reading(looking at?) bike books every day, looks very happy, and asks me, 'Which bike do you like?'
He sometimes treats me like a child because he is 8 years older than me, but these days I think, 'Who is like a child?' まぁ、楽しそうだからいいか。。
By the way, I decided to have my computer repaired. I called the shop where I got my laptop, and the clerk said, 'It will take about 10 days, and if the cause is not so bad, the repair cost would be several thousand yen.'
I can't use a computer for about 10 days, which is a long time for me, but I have to be patient. I am going to read the blog with my cell phone, and try to make a comment.
というわけで、明日修理に出してきます。 その間はいつものように参加できないけど、みんなのコメント & David のエントリーは携帯から読んでいるのでたくさん書いて下さいね!

Hi David,
I absolutely agree with you! Driving on snow and ice is much easier than riding a bike on them, so most people don't ride it during winter here, you know. When you lived in Hokkaido, did you used to do it?

Hi Tomo and everyone,
I got my cell-phone in the last fall, too.
Our cuple challenged for driving to Tohoku district that my son has been living.
I bought it for emergency contact with my son.
So my cell-phone has keeping only simple fanction.
It became a kind of my talisman.
Looking back in my PC life,
I've been exciting and amazing since I bought it.
In fact, huge kinds of fanction were included in the PC.
Then I was interested to touch the key and button.
I tried touching next to next, very carefully.
However, I had many troubles and was worry about its resolution.
Even now, I have been troubling its some, and new kinds of trouble is coming up day by day.
I'v done today's comment.
I'll take a deep breath, now.
Speak to you soon,
Kiyoko

Hi everyone,
Did you have nice weekend?
There are many gadgets now including PC and cell-phones. To keep up with new ones is rather difficult and sometimes stressful, isn't it? I can't imagine the life without PC and cell-phone now; I can keep contact with my son living far away from my house, and it gives me(us) a feeling of security and comfort. But some kind of excitement and thrill which I felt when I was young seems to be lost. Talking of PC, since I got PC many years ago, my life has completely changed. Even now I can remember the excitement when I got a poetry book by e-mailing directly to a publisher in UK.(The book was out by the small publisher.) That was what I did first after getting PC.
Hi Kiyoko,
You did it! Imagining what I(you) want to be , and doing a little more effort(not much) is important for building up English, I think.
Hi Tomo,
I hope your PC will be back in action soon.
Hi Sasuke,
Nice to have you here.
Hi Amica,
I hope you enjoyed the hot spring.
Hi Maki,
How was skiing? Do you have a muscle ache? ( I'm not good at skiing.) I hear ski resort in Hokkaido is so good , and be popular among Australian these days.
Good night,
Anne

Hi all,
Did you have a good weekend? I had a relaxing time.
Maki, did you enjoy skiing? You live in Hokkaido, so you must be a good skier. When I was young, I would often go skiing, but I haven't done it for a long time. 北海道の雪はさらさらなんでしょうね~。
Yes, making a comment by a cell phone is hard for me, especially in English. I'm writing this with my mailer. I make my comment little by little when I have time, and keep it in the 保存BOX, then I copy and paste it in the comment space. You'll have some words that you may use next when you e-mail by your cell phone in Japanese, but when you do it in English, you won't have any words, so you have to type each letter. I'm sure I'll be good at using a cell phone by the time my PC is back;-)
Anne, 「思い描く」ですが、私なら‘imagine’、または‘picture’を使うかな。。 単に‘visualize’は使ったことがないので(笑)
Amica, how was the onsen? Did you have a good time?
Hi Tosh,
It's nice to have you back! How's your school life?
See you!

Hi Everyone,
How's your weekend? I went skiing on Sunday and I enjoyed it very much. Though it was snowing and sometimes very windy, the snow was good.
Anne, I stretched my muscle very well after skiing, so I don't have any ache! This time, I went to Yubari(夕張), where is famous for its bankruptcy of the public finance. The ski resort is "Niseko" which you mentioned. It is a big one and it takes an hour and a half by car from my house. コンビニでベジマイトが買えるくらいオーストラリア人が多いです。:-)
Hi Tosh!
Long time no see! I'm glad to hear from you again. How's your school life? No, you were not the only person who doesn't know English grammer, at all. Feel free to write your comments. Let's enjoy learning English together!
Hi Kiyoko,
How often do you go to the sport center? It's so nice for your health, isn't it?
Amica, hope you enjoyed 温泉!
Good night!
Maki

Hi Tomo,
I'm glad to find your comment after posting mine. But you posted it at 13:22pm....When I checked all comments before I'd started writing, I couldn't find yours...??? Anyway, you'll be an expert for writing by a cell-phone, I'm sure! 腱鞘炎にならにようにね~!;-)
Hi Anne,
「思い描く」ですが、私もpictureが浮かびました。imagineとpictureの使い分けで、Longman Pocket Activatorによると・・・
Use "picture" when you form a clear image in your mind of a person, place, or situation.
visualizeもこの感じに近そうには思います。どちらもimagineより「描く」という意味がよく表されているような。。。どうでしょう?
By for now,
Maki

Hi Anne,
It is possible to share your comment about PC. Firstly I planed to get the PC, and I visualized PC life eight years ago.
Actually I prepared PC desk set and space when my house was rebuilt.
However, I was very busy to help my daughter and care may grand children.
Then my dream to get PC was disappeared from in my mind.
In real time, to take care of baby was a big excitement in my dairy life.
Looking forward to developing kids, I visualized my dreamy life.
I suddenly realized that I wonder if I was not satisfied. It was two years ago.
Recent my life starts from PC ends to PC. Then it became necessity for me.
See you soo,
Kiyoko

Today, I went to the beach with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said "You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear." She put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is completely off topic but I had to tell someone!

Have you ever considered about adding a little bit more than just your articles? I mean, what you say is valuable and all. Nevertheless think about if you added some great images or video clips to give your posts more, "pop"! Your content is excellent but with pics and videos, this website could certainly be one of the very best in its niche. Very good blog!

Hi David,
I think that's a good idea to get together for a celebration of Sone san's life. If I were her or her family, I would be happy about that. I think she was lucky to have a friend like you. Thinking about her and talking about her, you will have a pain in your heart, but I think it is a great idea to get to know her better, even though she is no longer with you. Maybe it is the only thing you all can do for her, for her family, and also for you all, I think.
About your new books, if there anything we can do for you, please let us know. We'll be happy to help you.
Speak to you soon,
Tomo
PS Maki, thanks! Amica, I'm sure you'll get a higher score next year;-)
PPS David, I don't want to put any pressure on you, but I'm looking forward to hearing your voice.
