Bridgend (2)

Hi Everyone,

I am impressed with how quickly you were able to understand the background to the story. I think I mentioned some time ago that I do not watch the TV news anymore because it has become too much like 'infotainment' for my liking. To keep up with the news, I go the Google news site every morning. I prefer using the internet because they have articles from many different sources, so you get more than one point of view on the same topic. Sadly, stories of young people from Bridgend killing themselves have been very common in the last couple of months.

By the way, here are some examples of how the word 'suicide' is used.

Another young person has committed suicide.
Some young people see suicide as glamorous.
100 people were killed by a suicide bomber.

Other expressions used instead of suicide are 'kill yourself' and 'take your own life'.

A young girl took her own life.
A young boy killed himself.

Of course, I agree with all of you that the Bridgend suicides were terrible tragedies. I know a girl whose father committed suicide two years ago, and she said it was much harder for her family than if he had been ill or died in an accident. When I was in Tokyo in November, I was surprised to see that the trains on the Keio line were running late. There was a message about an accident, but my friend told me that it was probably another suicide. Isn't it terrible to think that someone just like us got up that morning, and decided that it was going to be their last day on this earth?

In the Bridgend cases, the newspapers and TV focussed on the role of the social networking sites, as many of you found out. It may be because I am too old, but I have to admit that I don't really understand how those sites work. Do any of you use them? I know a lot of my students use Mixi, but I don't really understand what that is or how you use it.

Anyway, I have another weekend of work ahead of me, but I hope I will be able to find some time to get out on my bike. I will try to think of a more cheerful topic for us to talk about next week.

Bye for now,

David

Hi David, Hi Everyone!
It's my first time to write here.
I don't really understand about Bridgend, but I know it wasn't a good news for their family, friends and us.

I don't know how to use mixi too.
But I think that is kind of.... MySpace?

Nice to meet you!!

Hi Alice. Nice to have you with us. If you write the parts of my entry that you didn't understand, I'm sure the others will translate them for you.

Hi Alice,
Welcome to the blog! As David said, if you write the parts that you didn't understand, we'll help you. Which parts? Please feel free to write them all;-)

Hi Maki and Anne,
Thanks for your comments.

Hi David,
Are you going to work this weekend too? 頑張って下さい^^ I hope you will be able to find some time to have fun with your bike.
Look forward to the cheerful topic!

Have a great weekend and see you soon.

Tomo

Hi Anne, Maki, Tomo,
Thanks for your warm comments!
I agree with Tomo. The most important thing for our life is "Love". As you know, the Beatles sang "♪All you need is love♪". I love this song.

Hi Alice,
Nice to meet you! Me too, I can't understand perfectly David's comment because I'm not good at English, but there are lots of member who help me on this blog, so I can learn English here. If you have a question, the member of this blog will surely give the answer to you.

Hi Everyone,
I have a question.

Amica

hi amica

long time no see!!
but I am still here and reading this blog everyday.
about your question "whose" and "whom".
I am sure you know "I-my-me" "you-your-you" "she-her-her" "he-his him"
なので "who(誰が)-whose(誰の)-whom(誰に、誰を)"となります。Davidの "I know a girl whose father committed suicide two years ago." は "I know a girl" と "her father commited suicide two years ago."
"Whose book is this?(この本誰の?)"
"Whom did you meet yesterday?(昨日誰に会ったの?)

Good morning!

Hi Alice,
Welcome to this blog! As Tomo says, please feel free to ask any questions and we will help you.;-)

Hi Everyone,
I'm going to Celine Dion concert tonight! I'm excied!

Amo, thank you for explaining about "whom" and "whose"!

Have a lovely weekend!

Talk to you later,

Maki

Hi David,
Thank you!! I'm glad to join this group!
Yes, I try to come here a lot and be friend with English!!!lol.

HiTomo,
Thank you so much!!
Um, first, I don't understand what mean "infotainment".
This is a personal question, how long do you study English?
You are very good at English!

Hi Amica,
Thank you!!
I'm happy to be here!!
I know.... I hate grammar too. Cause I think, native speakers also doesn't every time speak perfectly correct sentence.

Good morning Maki,
Thank you for your kindness comment.
Oh my gosh!! You're going to Celine Dion concert!?
You will meet Celine!? You will hear her songs!?
Cool! I wanted to see it but I went other singers concert so I'm not able to go this time. I'm looking forward to hear how was it.

Hi Amica,
Amoが書いてくれた例文はもうひとつ、Whose is this book? とWhose is this book?

I know the man. + my friend is talking with him.

①I know the man whom(that) my friend is talking with.
②I know the man with whom my friend is talking.
③I know the man my friend talking with.

You are going to the party with David.

①Who are you going to the party with?
②Whom are you going to the party with?
③With whom are you going to the party?

Hi Maki,
Are you going to Celine Dion concert tonight? Have fun!

Hi Alice,

Tomo

Hi Everyone,
How nice and helpful everyone here is! ところで、 let me add a little more information on the usage of "whose."

a girl whose father is a doctor なら、

the house whose roof is red

a girl whose father is a doctor なら、

the house whose roof is red

OK, I've got to run now. I'm not sure if this information is useful to you or not, but I wrote it anyway.

Have a good weekend!

Hi everyone,
How is your weekend?
Alice, welcome to the blog! About your question, Tomo has already answered nicely, but can I join a little?
Infotainment→Information+entertainment
combination of ' hard news' and interviews and other topics such as health problems, interviews ,soft news and so on.

I think I mentioned some time ago that I do not watch the TV news anymore because it has become too much like 'infotainment' for my liking.

Hi Amica,
whom,whose...
Thanks members for explaining the usage.

  being live→being alive
a tetephone, a frog( add 'a')(March 5)

Hi Maki,
Celine Dion!! Enjoy the concert!

Bye for now,

Anne

Thank you. You should all be English teachers!

Hi amo, Tomo, White green, Anne,
Thanks for explaining!

Hi Everyone,
Next week we have "White Day". As you know, I got lots of "友チョコ" from my students on Valentine's Day, so I have to give them a present in return on White Day. Most of "友チョコ" I got were handmade, so they say "I want cake you made", and they expect it. Today, I bought ingredient for making cake. Next week, I'm going to make cupcakes for them. That's a bother....

Hi Maki,
How was the concert?

See you soon,

Amica

Thank you Tomo!
”infotainment”.....

すごすぎです!私は英会話教室に行ってるんですが、ここ最近月謝とかがもったいなくない!?と感じてきてしまいまして・・・でも独学だと「続ける」ことができないので。ってところなんです。「I don't have enough time!!」な~んて自分のせいにしないで。でもこのブログは楽しいです!いつでも優しく教えてくれる人がいるし。これで会話の練習が出来たらいいんですが;;

Hi Anne!
Thank you so much for teaching me an English.
Sometimes I watch "infotainment" on TV.

Hi Amica,
How are you doing?
Yeah, White Day!! But maybe I'm not able to get or give 友チョコ to friends cause we had a exams on Valentines Day at school. That was so sad.
Okay, I'm gonna make a huge chocolate cake!! I just decided!lol.

Hey Everybody!
I'm going to go to California Disneyland this spring vacation!!! Do you have any plans on this spring?

Hi Everyone,
I came back from Tokyo tonight. Celine Dion concert was the greatest! Her singing, producing a show and everything was perfect. I enjoyed it very much. One thing about it I would say is that I wanted to listen her singing at a concert hall. It was in Tokyo Dome, so sound quality there wasn't good, you know. Even so, her performance was wonderful.

Thank you, everyone, for explaining about some grammer questions!

I'm getting sleepy. I was excited after the concert and I couldn't sleep well last night. Her songs had been playing in my head for a long time!

Good night.

Maki

Sorry to post the same commnet twice!

Hi everyone,
Did you have a nice weekend?

Hi Alice,
*Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary:
1. to speak about something briefly, giving little
detail or using few words.
2. to refer to something or someone
*Dictionary com:
1. to refer briefly
*Oxford
1.to write or speak about sth/sb, especially
without giving much information

ただし、状況に応じて、say(言う),refer to(言及する), indicate(示す), raise(挙げる)など
Members, do you have any ideas?

Hi Maki,
You seemed to enjoy the concert, and it's good for you!

Good night,

Anne

Hi David,
Thanks for your comment on our explanations. DavidのOKも出たので私たちも安心です^^ How was your weekend? Have you already gone over another mountain?(←I'm talking about your work.)
By the way, I have no idea what social networking sites are.

Hi Amica,
Can I comment on 'whose' one more thing?

There is a house whose window is broken.
・I have a dog whose nose is pink.

こんな風に使えるけど、でも私の感覚では‘a house with a broken window’、‘a dog with a pink nose’の方がよく使われるような気がします。(Team, what do you think?) with

a girl with a lovely smile (= a girl whose smile is lovely)
a woman with long hair (= a woman whose hair is long)
a cat with blue eyes(= a cat whose eyes are blue)

By the way, are you going to make cupcakes for your students? You are so sweet, I want to be your student! Actually, I used to take piano lessons when I was a child. I had a piano in my father's house, but my father threw it away when he rebuilt his house. I almost forgot how to play the piano.. I love the sound of a piano.

Hi Alice,
I didn't think reading and writing had an effect on speaking skills before I joined this blog, but surely they have. Before I joined the blog, I couldn't speak English like this. Of course, it is important to practice speaking English as much as you can in your every day life. You can practice with anyone or anything. Someone on the blog said a long time ago that he was practicing with a poster in his room! There are a lot of different ways to practice, and all ways work for you if you keep going;-)
Are you going to California Disneyland on your spring vacation?(Are you a university student?) It's exciting, isn't it? I think that having a goal is a very good thing because it motivates you to study more, right? Let's keep going and enjoy the blog!
My plans for this spring, I am planning some things because I will have more free time from this spring, but I haven't decided yet. I'm still thinking about it, but I want to challenge something new;-)

Hi Maki,
お帰り~♪ Glad to hear you had a great time at the concert!

Hi Anne,
About the question you got from Alice, hmm.., I don't have any good ideas, sorry. I haven't used 'refer to' and 'indicate'. I use 'say', 'tell', or 'mention' when I want to say ‘言う’. I'm not sure about when and how to use those words.

See you all tomorrow,

Tomo

Hi Tomo,
About the usage of "whose", I agree with your idea.
About how each studies effect with each other, I have a same feeling as Tomo said. I also don't have a chance to use( speak) English in my daily life, since I joined this blog last spring, it has become easier to speak and write in English a little bit. Input works( reading, listening) and output works(writing , speaking) seem to move like a circle and give us synergistic effect, I think. Alice, attending ”英会話学校”will be more effective by posting on this blog!

Hi David and everyone,
About social networking, to tell the truth, I joined a few weeks a couple of years ago; one of my young friend who was going to go to some foreign country and marry asked me to join Mixi to keep in touch with me, and I did. But after joining, I thought it was not the place for me, so I quit .Instead, I do by e-mailing. By registering , we can open the site, share ideas, and it would be fun, but I might be old to join there. I don't know about networking sites so well, but a few years ago some one in high school spoke ill of his/her friend falsely and anonymously, and that posting became a big problem and topic those days. Social networking would be fun and good for tighten their relationship in some way, but at the same time could be very dangerous and harmful ones, I think.

I'm looking forward to new topics!

See you soon,

Anne

Hi Tomo!!
I see. Anyway, I have to make an effort and continue if I want to speak or understand English, right? I know... but that is the best difficult thing :( I'll try!! Will you help me?
I'm going to go there with my mom as a sightseeing. So (?) I'm not a university student. Yep! I'm sooo exciting!! I can't wait!! But after spring, I will be a candidate for examination.Aww...
What do you want to challenge for?

Hi Anne!!
How can I thank you? little by littleで!

Hi Everyone,

I had a very busy day today, so I had no time to write an entry. I will write something tomorrow.

See you soon.

Hi Tomo and Anne,
About the usage of whose, I agree with both of you. I hardly use "whose", and honestly say, I almost forget this word.
Sorry, I can't explain about them well grammatically, as you both did.

Hi Everyone,
I didn't know about social networking at all. It is like "チャット"? After reading Anne's commnet, it seems not to be like "チャット" but also not to be a blog...???

Hi Alice,
You are going to Disneyland in California?! Wow! Sounds great! You will have a chance to speak English as well. Good to you. But after that, you will be a candidate for examination? Hummm, I'm confused....

Hi David,
I'm looking forward to your new entry!

By for now,

Maki

Hi Tomo,

Hi Maki,
I'm glad to hear you enjoyed that concert. I like Celine Dion, and I like the song "The prayer". Did she sing the song at the concert?

Hi Anne,
I know "Mixi". Some of my friends join it, and they invite me to join it, but I don't join it. Actually, before I join on this blog, I had no intention of joining any internet site because I don't have good image about it. In the fact, there are many trouble on there. But I was surprised when I read this blog. People who join here are helping each other to learn English! and there are no slander here. So I decided to join here.

Hi Alice,
Disneyland in California!? いいな~♪ I want to go there!

Hi Everyone,
The other day, I bought "DSの英単語のソフト" because the English words I know are too few. I did it, but I realized that it was not good for me because I realized that the most good way to memorize English words is using as my words, so I keep to write in English!

Good Night

Amica

Hi David,
It seems like that you haven't gone over 'the mountain' yet. Are you all right? Aren't you tired? Have a good sleep!

Hi Anne,
Social networking sites are to interact with others? I didn't know that! I had no idea what they were. 。

Hi Alice,
Of course I(we) will help you;-) About my plans for the spring, I'll tell you when I have decided. 。
By the way, are you a high school student?

Hi Maki,
To be honest, I had forgot about 'whom', and I checked my grammar book!(笑)

Hi Amica,
I understand what you want to say.

Goodnight,

Tomo

PS David, look forward to your new entry!
