Yes! I heard similar news on TV, too. Nowadays, junior high school students has been taught 'I am Tanaka Yasuo.' (姓—名の順). 国語審議会 announced that it is preferable that our name is introduced and described in original style. Therefore school textbook says 'I am Tanaka Yasuo.' But I feel a little bit strange...
Chinese and South Korean's names often seems to be written the same order (姓名の順) of their home country in English newspaper or magazine. Why did Japan change the way to call our name in English in the 明治 era?
英語はコミュニケーションの手段だと思うので、相手（外国人）の解りやすい順序であればどちらでも良いかな、とも思うけど、なぜ最初は「名ー姓」の順で統一していたのでしょう？混乱しますよね。

My son was taught at school that you can say 'I am Tanaka Yasuo.' or 'I am Yasuo Tanaka.', either is OK. I was surprised when I heard it, and it sounded a bit strange to me, but I didn't know the reason. ayakoの言うとおり解りやすい順序ならどちらでも、という感じがしますが、途中から変えるのもどうなんでしょう？きっと、一番最初は英語で話すのだから、その言語を使用している国にならって「名ー姓」にしたのでしょうね。

I’ve never introduced myself in “first-name + surname” order. Because I’ve never been taught like that (or I was sleeping?) and I think it’s very strange. When encountered the name “Soseki Natsume”(夏目漱石) in a news paper, an American friend of mine once said that “Don’t you Japanese people feel shame at this?” I usually say, “Hi! I’m ○○○○（surname + first-name）. Just call me ○○(first-name).” And I’ve never had problem so far. As ayako-san said, no one in the world would call the Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China and the President of South Korea “Jiabao Wen” and “Myung–bak Lee” respectively. THEY ARE Wen Jiabao (温　家宝) and Lee Myung-bak （李　明博）. Why not Fukuda Yasuo (福田康夫)?

I learned 'first name+surname' style at school ,following the way in English speaking countries, and I didn't feel it was a shame. I took it a part of studying English. As you said, it is true that in China and Korea, people use ' surname+ first name' style. The difference might start from the beginning of English education in each country.( I'm not sure, though.)

Like Maki and Anne, I was taught like that, and I've never felt shame at it. I didn't even think of that. To be honest, introducing myself family-name-first style sounds a bit strange because I wasn't taught like that in the first place, but either style is fine to me, as long as the person I talk with remember my name;-)
