Big dreams and fantastic English
Hi Everyone,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Personally, I am a big dreamer - I always have been - but I sometimes feel jealous of friends who are really happy just living ordinary lives in the towns where they grew up. If I could have been satisfied doing that, my life would have been a lot easier! At the end of the day, all that really matters is being happy, and I feel envious of people who can find that happiness close to home.
This week, many of the comments were written by Tomo and Anne. Although the comments themselves were interesting (of course!), I must admit that I was thinking more about the English when I was reading them.
Tomo has been writing comments here for two years now, so I have seen the way her writing has developed. What amazes me about the comments she is writing now is that the English is almost perfect. I don't mean just that there are no grammatical mistakes, I mean that she is actually writing at very close to native speaker level. I have met a lot of Japanese teachers of English, both in junior high and high schools and in universities, but very few of them can write like that. (Tomo, you really should think about training to become an English teacher.)
When Anne joined us, her English was understandable, but it was a bit unnatural and sounded like she was using a dictionary to make almost every sentence. Recently, however, she too is sounding more and more natural. Even if I were to correct her entries, there would not really be much for me to correct.
I am not writing this just because I want to compliment Tomo and Anne, but because I am truly amazed that they have been able to develop such a high standard of writing by reading and making comments on the blog. I would like to ask both of them to tell us what methods they are using to study, and also to pass on any advice about how to get the most out of taking part in this blog.
And thanks also to Jazmin, Yuki, Mai and Green for their comments on the last topic. It is a very difficult subject, so thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Next week, I will be introducing you to an interesting student. He is Japanese, but he has quite an unusual background. I will post an interview with him on the blog on Monday, and then you can write questions for him through the week.

Thank you very much! I'm sooooo happy to hear that!!
Training to become an English teacher? I'm very interested in it. To tell the truth, I wanted to become a teacher when I was a child, but I didn't want to try the examination race because I was tired of studying when I was in high school. But, that was an excuse. I just didn't have a strong will to follow my dream. I kind of wanted to be a teacher, but 'kind of' is not enough, right? If there was a time machine, I would go back to the past and tell myself, ‘Don't give up, try hard!’
To be honest, I sometimes feel jealous of people who have a job they really love. Compared with people who have made their dreams come true, I haven't done anything big, so my life might seem to be boring for them. When I feel envious of those people, I try to count my blessings. I talk to myself, ‘It's true that they have something I don't have, but it's also true that I have something they don't have.’
About the methods I'm using to study out of taking part in this blog,
I have my blog now, so I'm writing my diary in English, but It's been only a month or so since I started. I sometimes watch movies or dramas in English and read English books, but I do it only when I feel like to. I read Mr. Jarrell's e-mail magazine every morning. I teach my oldest son and my niece(They are in junior high.) English once a week. I talk to my children in English every day.(but it's just simple English like 'Brush your teeth.’ or ‘Wash your hands.’, and more than 95% is Japanese.) I listen to an English CD while I'm cooking or doing housework, and I follow and copy the CD(shadowing). It's one of the ways of my speaking practice, something like ‘口の体操.’ I'm using the same CD and trying to do it every day, but I take a break when I don't feel like to.
The most effective method for me is taking part in this blog. There are lots and lots of comprehensible input in your entries. I can't use English that I don't understand. I always look for English which I can understand, but which I couldn't have produced myself. I often re-read your old entries, and I always find something new for me. I don't know why, but I will be able to understand some parts of your entries that I didn't understand before. As you said, I've been writing comments here for two years. It means that I struggle to produce English myself almost every day.(It still takes me a lot of time!) Getting lots of comprehensible input from your writings(study), and writing comments here(practice). I think that made my English better.
毎日英語に触れて、あーでもない、こーでもないと苦労することが一番効果があったような気がします。 ただ読むだけじゃなくて、ただ書くだけじゃなくて、色々考えながら。

さっきはあわただしくポストしたのでもう一度。。（今度は日本語で書かせてくださ～い。）
英語でコメントする時、私も辞書は使います。 でも自分の辞書は使いません。（普通の英和辞典と電子辞書を持ってるけど） 使うのは英辞朗だけ。 ｢これはどう言うんだろう？｣と思ったとき、まずはなるべく自分の力だけで書けるように頑張ります。 言い方を変えたり、角度を変えて考えてみたり。 単語一つとか、単語＋前置詞とか、｢この言い方はどうかな？｣というのが浮かんだら、その表現をを英辞朗で検索します(英和機能）。 ヒットしたら例文をよく読みます。 それで自分の言いたいことに近いものが見つかったらその表現を使います。 英語が全然浮かばない時は日本語で検索します(和英機能）。 でもそうするといろんな英語の表現が出てくるので、その中から自分が使えそうなものを選びます。 そうしたらその単語やイディオムをまた調べて例文をよく読みます。 それで自分が納得できたら初めてその表現を使うようにしています。 なるべく最初から日本語で検索をかけない、つまり和英を使わないようにしています。 和英で見つけた表現は英和で｢よし！｣と思えるまで調べます。(じゃないと危険なので) 辞書にも間違いや不自然な表現もある、という前提で使っています。(でも私の知識よりはず～っと上！) Davidがtopicを提供してくれる時は、エントリーの中に使える表現がたくさんあるので、まずはそれを真似します。 Davidの英語は絶対合ってるので安心して使っています。
私は簡単な英語が好きなので、難しい単語より、簡単な単語を組み合わせる方を選ぶんです。（だからボキャブラリーがなかなか増えないのかもしれませんが･･) 自分が納得できない表現は使わないので、｢どうしてこの並び方？｣とか、｢どうしてこの前置詞がいるんだろう？｣と思ってしまう時は、その表現は自分が｢分かった！｣と思えるまで保留にしておきます。
私の英語がここまでこれたのは、｢読むこと｣と｢書くこと｣をずっと続けてきたからだと思います。 両方ともこのブログに参加する前はほとんどしたことがなかった方法です。（特にwritingは） 2年前は書くことは難しいから無理、と思っていたけど、でもすごく効果がありました。 私は書くことが好きだし、ゆっくり考える時間があるのがいいのかな。 それに書くと細かいミスに気が付くようになるし、自分が分からなかった所にも向き合える。 ただ表現集を読んでいるだけじゃ全然使えるようにならなかったけど、出会った表現を自分で使っていくうちに、簡単な英語を使うコツが分かってきたような気がします。
Davidのエントリーは｢読めば分かるけど、自分では言えなかった｣表現がたくさんあるので、私にとっては宝の山みたいです（笑） 昔は読むのにも苦労していたけど、今は辞書を使わなくても読めるようになりました（たまには使うけど）。 DavidはSimple Englishを使ってくれているので、とてもわかりやすいです。 でもDavidの英語は分かるけど、英語のニュース、ホームページなどは難しくて（知らない単語が多過ぎて）さっぱり分かりません。 私の次の目標は、もっとスラスラ英語が出てくるようにすることと、ボキャブラリーを増やすことです。 これからもよろしくお願いします＾＾

Tomoの2番目のコメントを読んで私もどのようにして投稿しているのか、どのようにこの一年で変化していっているのか考えてみました。David が言われたように最初に参加した時、「理解できるけど、全部辞書を使って書いているような英語。。」、まさしくそうでした！（Davidが私の英分を読んでそのように覚えていてくれた事に感謝！です。）書けない、間違えたくない、と言う思いが強くて楽しいどころではありませんでした。当初から、書く過程で、最初、まず日本語で考えて、それから訳す、ということはしていません。今は、まず、ある程度のまとまりをざっと思いつくままに英語で書いて、その時点でわからない事（単語、熟語など）をラインを引きながら続けていきます。次に自分の辞書、（英英でニュアンスなども調べます。）、英辞朗で確認、（Tomoも言っているように例文がたくさんあるので使いやすい。）このくりかえしです。こうして、全体を書いて読み直して、投稿します。それでも、時制が違う、単複が一致していない、等々すぐにわかる単純なミスが後になつて気づくと言う事が多いので、訂正する事をあきらめていますが、こうした単純なミスをなくしていきたいと考えています。
日常では、ディスカッションのクラスに通ってますので、その予習、それに関する自分なりの資料、情報をインターネットで調べて読んでいます。基本的に読むことは好きなので、英語で小説（その他、本）を読むこともあります。リスニングはポッドキャスト、インターネットネットのＹｏｕ Ｔｕｂｅなどインタビュー番組など好きですね。スピーキング は家事をしながらテープを聴き、シャドーイングでしょうか。なぜそれだけ勉強しているのに書けないのか？それが悩みでもありました。実際に書いてみると、まず、出来ない、わからない、中途半端にしている、そうしたところが見えてはっきりしてくる、それが大きかったと思います。（ここでめげないこと！）これはどんな勉強でも同じだと思います。簡単だけど、不確かな事を確実にしていく、そうした一つ一つを穴埋めしていくような作業、これが大きかったと思います。両目を手で覆っていた自分が片手の間から世の中を見ている、そんな気分です。
Tomoが「宝の宝庫」と言ったように、Davidのエントリーは学ぶべき事が多くて「あーこうして、書けばいいんだ。」と、思う事がたくさんあります。Davidのエントリーに関しては読むことは私にとって苦痛ではありませんし、辞書を使う事もあまりありません。しかし使いたい表現はチェックして書き抜いて自分なりの英文を言ってみて次回に備えています。それから、「ジャレマガ」も、配信してもらって毎朝読んでいます。身近な話題で表現も参考になります。それからこれを読んでいらっしゃる方の中で英会話のクラス、に通っていらっしゃる方、最初のwarm up のトピックとして参考になる話題満載ですよ！
まず書き続けてみる事、これが大事ではないでしょうか？ここでは少し勇気を出して（私にとっては!です。）、少し努力して投稿すれば、自分ひとりでするよりずっと続けやすいと思いますよ。自分の反省を含めて書いてみました。

Hi David and Everyone,
As I mentioned yesterday, I sometimes watch movies and soap operas in English. I watch them on DVDs with English subtitles. I listen to the English and read the subtitles at the same time. It helps me a lot to catch the English, and I can check the detail of the sentences. I think watching movies or soap operas in English with English subtitles is a good method because you can see how people feel from their faces and voices, and you can check the detail of what they are saying. I can learn new expressions much better this way than if I just read English books(stories). I think reading books is good study, but the English used in a book is a bit different from everyday English(spoken English). I think reading books is helpful if you want to describe something, but if you want to learn to speak, reading English subtitles(people's speeches or lines) is more helpful.
After all, I think the most important thing for learning languages is trying to use what you have studied by yourself, and keep going.

Hello, David and everyone.
I found this website long time ago and thought it was nice! I read David’s entry and everyone’s comments. With time, however, I felt lazy to do it and stopped it. Because I was tired of reading long comments, it took time for me. I wanted to do something else. Although I think this was just my excuse.
Anyway, the other day I opened this website for the first time in a long time and read that David wrote about Tomo and Anne's improvement of writing. I want to improve my English too, so I just decided to write comment here as possible as I can. It’s not so easy though. (It already took 30 minutes for me to write these sentences.)
By the way, did anyone read “The Freedom Writers Diary” or watched movie “ Freedom Writers”? I was inspired by them. (I watched the movie first and am reading the book now.)
I realize that writing and reading are fundamental.

Hi Tomo and Anne,
Thanks for telling us about your study methods. Actually, they are very similar to the way I studied Japanese. When I first came to Japan, I used to write things in Japanese and then give them to my friend to check. When I read her corrections, I wrote the whole thing again to make sure I would remember the things I had learnt.

I'm glad Tomo and Anne have inspired you, and I'm looking forward to reading your comments. Actually, your English is pretty good already, so I'm sure other people will be learning from what you write. By the way, you made one mistake that stood out for me because it is going to be in my next book. Lots of Japanese people make this mistake because it is a tricky expression.

Hi David,
Really? Our study methods are very similar to the way you studied Japanese? That's very good news! I want to be like you. You speak Japanese very fluently, express yourself exactly what you want, and you can enjoy Japanese movies as well. You have no trouble using Japanese in your everyday life, and you sometimes speak Japanese in your dreams and even in your sleep, right? I want to be able to speak English in my sleep, too! Where you are now is my goal(目標). I still have a looong long way, but I don't give up. I hope I will get there sometime in the future.

Oh, my mistake is common among Japanese people? Now I understand my sentence was wrong expression.
I remembered there is an expression, "as soon as possible".
Can I say , I decided to write comments here as often as possible. or as much as possible ?

I just noticed your new comment. David usually doesn't check old entries. You can talk about anything on the latest entry even if it doesn't have anything to do with the topic we are talking now. Don't worry about that, we usually do it;-)
About your question, I think both 'as often as possible' and 'as much as possible' are fine.

I think 'I decided to write comments here as often as possible.' is fine, but 'I decided to write comments here as much as possible.' might be wrong because the word 'comment' is countable. I may be wrong, but I would say 'I decided to write as many comments as I can.'

That's what I wanted!
*Why did I join here?
I'm a housewife and don't have a chance to use in my daily life, but I majored in English Literature at the college.( Oh, this is the last thing I want to say!)
Before joining here, I've been studying English discussion and continue studying now at the community college from Brad(your colleague!). Thanks to him and his class, I could learn a lot of things and he opened my eyes to think and watch things from various aspects not only in English but also in my daily life. While studying, I felt I couldn't write sentence naturally, smoothly, and grammatically correct, but I have pretended not to notice the fact because I didn't want to face it. Last year my family situation has changed a little bit(I've been taking care of my parents-in law at home), and I could afford to tackle with this problem, so I thought it was a chance for me. It took me a few months to decide, though.
As you mentioned, last May and June were not happy days here on this blog for me. Before doing comment, I have to confess I couldn't write and it took me much time to write using dictionary(!!), and after posting ,I was always shocked and ashamed of my writing. Then, why didn't I quit here?
First, I was able to know a lot of things from your entry not only English itself but also ideas and views( like these weeks topics-cultural difference, Ah American Idol!). It is fun and inspires me a lot. Second, it's fun to exchange ideas and know others. Third, I really want to brush up my writing. So I keep posting.
Here are my ideas which was thought to be good for me related to this blog.
1. "Practice" is important even though it's so basic.
I became able to write the basic sentence like' it's been a long time...' without thinking.
2. Reading your entry, and imitating the expression is so helpful when writing.
3.Exposing myself to simple and natural English (your entry) everyday.
To be honest, I sometimes regret I should have written that way or something, so I check the book to make assure it.
So, practice and " Back to basics" would be effective.
Even now, I sometimes feel embarrassed exposing my writing and ideas, though...( ここまで露出してなんだ！と思われるでしょうが、この状況に戸惑っているのです。）
My advice:
Everyone who drops in this blog got a chance to go to the riverside, but it's up to each person to drink the water or not!
I'm happy I can drink the water^^)
