Another / the other
Hi Everyone,
Did you have a nice weekend? I worked all of Saturday and most of Sunday, but last night I went to watch a play performed by the Nagoya Players. The Nagoya Players is an English drama group based in Nagoya, and they do one or two shows every year. This time, they did the Diary of Anne Frank. It was a great show, and a lot of people I know were either in it or helping to organize it, so it was nice to catch up with some old friends.
Anyway, the reason I have been so busy recently is that I am working on the new ALC book, which will be coming out in October. I have already finished writing it, but now the editor is checking it for me, and I am going through making changes. I'm hoping that you will all help by giving me some feedback on whether my explanations are easy to understand or not.
Over the next few weeks, I will put some parts of the book that I am not sure about here on the blog. I hope that you will all read them and tell me whether you can understand or not. If you can't, please tell me which parts are difficult for you. We have talked about another/the other on the blog before, but I have made some changes to the explanation, and I would like to get your feedback, so here it is. I am particularly interested to know whether you think the last paragraph is interesting or not. It is not really part of the explanation, so if you don't think it is necessary, I will cut it.

まずはanotherとthe otherの基本的な使い方について説明をします。another とthe otherの区別は基本的にaとtheの区別と同じです（a/theも参勝）。従って、「どれか」を特定せずに、「もう1つ」の物・人を紹介したい時はanotherで、特定された他の物や人などについて述べる時はthe otherが適切です。
「もしそ物（人）が2つ（2人）しかなければ、１つについて言えば、残りの１つは自然に特定されます。そうなると、もう１つのことを言うときは、the otherになります。「2つしかなくて、今1つについて言ったので、今話しているのは残りの1つの方だ」ということが共通認識になるからです。もちろん、最初からたくさんの物や人があっても、最後の一つ（一人）まで順番に説明していくと、その最後の物や人は、自動的にtheになります。
例えば、I have three sisters. One lives in Tokyo, another one lives in Kyoto, and the other one lives in Sapporo.という文を考えてみましょう。3人姉妹の2人目を紹介すると、その時点では、まだ彼女以外にも紹介していない姉妹が残っています。従って、二人目の姉妹（京都に住んでいる人）を紹介する時は、会話の流れでは「一人目の姉妹（東京に住んでいる人）の他にもまだあと2人いて、私が今話しているのは、その2人の中の1人だよ」ということしか推測できないので、特定をしないanotherを使います。しかし、2人目のことを言ってしまった後は、残りは1人だけになるので、「その人のことだよ」ということが自動に特定されます。ですから、その人のことを言う時は、anotherではなくて、the otherに変えます。このように会話の流れで自動的に特定されるのは最後の1人（1つ）だけなので、その人（物）だけがthe otherになります。
例えば、ある街に5つのお寺があるとします。それらの場所を観光者に説明する時は、次のように言います。
One temple is ..., another one is ..., another one is ..., another one is ..., and the other is ....
なお、「残りのすべて」をまとめたい時も、theを使うことができます。
There are five temples in this city. One of them is very big, but the others are quite small.
Another/the otherに関して、一番日本人にとって大きい落とし穴になるのは「（人の）もう一つの」の英訳です。a/theの説明の中で、これらの単語は名詞が他の限定詞によって特定されている時には使用しないと述べましたが、anotherとthe otherについても同じことが言えます。英語だと、例えばSimon’s penのように言うなら、Simon’sがそのpen を特定します（どれのペンのことか分かるから）。従って、「サイモンのもう一つのペン」を言いたいならSimon’s another penやSimon’s the other penという言い方は間違いになります。「（人の）もう一つの～（別の）」のような表現を正しく英訳するには、上記の「姉妹」の説明と同じように、話題になっている物の全体の数を考えなければなりません。もし最初から2つしかないなら、「サイモンのもう１つのペン」は単にSimon’s other pen.になります。しかし、3つ以上ある場合は、「もう1つ」のことを言っても、まだその他にもいくつかあるということになるので、自動的には特定されません。この場合はone of Simon’s other pens、またはanother one of Simon’s pensと言う言い方になります。
ちなみに、「なんで英語はこんなに難しい区別にこだわるだろう！」と悩んでいる読者はいらっしゃるかもしれませんが、この説明を書いた時、私はone more（英語だと全ての対象物をカバーする）を言いたいたびに、日本語だと数える対象物によって数え方が変わるため、「もう１つ（一人など）」まで書かなければならなかったです。「英語は難しい！」と思っている読者は是非母語の日本語にも我々英語圏の人を悩ませる区別がたくさんあることを忘れないでください。これは語学の難しいところにもなりますが、語学の面白さにもなるでしょう。

Hi David,
It is difficult for us Japanese to understand well how to use "a/the" and "another/the other", as you said. But your explanation is very clear and I can understand it well, though I'm not sure to use them always correctly yet.;-) And as Tomo said, I also think that the last paragraph is necessary. It encourages learners to enjoy learning English!
There are two David's entries today and both are the same, so I wondered which one I should have posted my commnet in...

I found 2 Japanese mistakes as below.
日本語のミスというか、ただの打ち間違いですが。
1. a/theも参勝 → a/theも参照
2. 「もしそ物（人）が2つ（2人）しか
→
「もしその物（人）が2つ（2人）しか
I like the last paragraph. これを読んで、小さな「難しい区別」を何とか理解しようとする勇気が得られた気がします。

Here's the comment I posted today.
I can understand the explanation, and I think the last paragraph(It's the part that begins with ‘ちなみに、’, right?) is necessary because it helps learners. Actually, I talked about it to my son before when I was teaching him English. 何を教えている時かは忘れてしまいましたが、英語が‘数にこだわる’ということに、「何でそんなに面倒くさいんだ！」って怒って(？)いたので、「日本語は数え方にこだわるから日本語を学ぶ英語圏の人はそこで苦労するんだって」ということを話したら、あきらめがついたのか、「仕方ない、頑張るか」と思えたようです。 私も初めてその逆パターンの苦労を知ったときは、「な～んだ、そうだったのか・・」とちょっと嬉しかったので、「苦労してるのは自分だけじゃない」、「どの言語にも便利なところと不便なところがある」と知ることは学習者の気持ちを軽くしてくれると思います。
By the way, thanks to you, I've learned how to play with You Tube, and now I'm addicted to it. Actually, I'm addicted to Jason Castro. When I first watch his performance, I didn't like it so much(basically, I don't like men with long hair), but the more I hear him sing, the more I like him, especially his distinctive voice. Now I watched videos of all his best performances on You Tube. The judges often said something bad about his performances, but I loved them all. My favorite is ‘Daydream.’ You said before that all the top 3 from American Idol would release CDs, but Jason Castro took fourth place. I'm really sorry for it. If he releases a CD, I will buy it!

I can/could understand your explanation well, and I think the last paragraph is good and necessary to encourage learners.
Actually, as Maki said, there is a difference between ‘ I can understand’ and ‘ I can use it grammatically correct’.
The explanation of ‘サイモンのもう一つのペン‘is so specific and helpful!
By the way, while reading your entry, one question came to my mind, so can I ask a little bit related to another/ the other?
As for the sentence “ I have three sisters. One lives in Tokyo, another one lives in Kyoto, and the other one lives in Sapporo.” , is it possible to write without ONE?
1.another one lives→another lives
2.the other one lives→the other lives
3.One temple is…, another one is…→One temple is…, another is…
If possible, is the former part of speech ‘ an adjective’ and is the latter part of speech ‘a pronoun’?

以前、知り合いの外国人が同じことを言っていました。
あと、「日本語は自分や相手を指すときの言い方がたくさんあって難しい！」とも言っていました。（英語なら、"I" と "You" だけ覚えればいいけれど、日本語には「私・オレ・僕・ワシ…」「あなた・君・お前・アンタ…」と色々な言い方があるので）
そう言われると、日本語ってややこしいですよね。
丁寧語、尊敬語、謙譲語は日本人の私でもうまく使いこなせる自身はないし（笑）

As you say, in Japanese language, we have a lot of ways of calling ourselves or the person you talk with, but in English, they just say 'I' or 'you' regardless of age and sex. In Japanese, we can find out whether the person is a man or a woman, and we can also imagine how old the person is or what he/she is like just from reading. In Japanese, we can get some information about the person from texts, but in English, there is not a lot of information. I read somewhere that in English, they have a lot of different expressions for one meaning, so they need to choose his/her words, and it shows his/her character or personality. It's difficult for us Japanese to find them out just from reading, but it's interesting, isn't it?

As both of you said, in Japanese there are a lot of ways to express even when we say ‘you’. If he/ she calls his/ her boss ‘君’or ‘お前’, his/ her position at the office would be tough for ever! And furthermore, Keigo(honorific words) make it more complicated. In English, as David said, there are a lot of difficult things(grammar) to learn as well.
To understand or catch the difference is sometimes difficult, right?

I considered ‘サイモンのもう一つのペン'again, and checked how I understood it at the moment.
First, I would not use ‘ the other’, but as for ‘another’ , it is a little bit difficult for me to use ‘another one of ~’ without thinking, and I may use ‘ Simon’s another pen’ if I don’t write the sentence carefully. I drew simple pictures, and visualized them, and now I think I could understand David’s explanation clearly.

About your question, it is difficult to translate ‘よろしくお願いします’ into English because they don't have this phrase in English language. They just say what they feel or don't say anything, so it depends on the situation. How about this?
