I'm so glad to join this blog.
David, I see. There are also some phrases that are easy to express in English, but we can't express the same way in Japanese. I understand your point. Learning foreign languages is not just about translating sentences. it's necessary to be exposed to English a lot and get used to it. it's not easy to place ourselves in such environments in Japan, but it's not impossible.
there are many people improve their English skills even though they are in Japan. like Tomo's done.
so I'll enjoy studying hard and hope to be like her two years from now!

「よろしくお願いします。」is very unique and convenient expression in Japanese, isn’t it?
As you said, we can’t always translate Japanese literally into English and vice versa; sometimes we need to know cultural background in each country. I’m so curious to read your explanations about 「決まり文句」or your other「かゆいところに手が届く」explanations.

You are welcome. I think your English is very good already, but can I try to re-write your comment? About this sentence, ‘It took me a lot of time again to write until here since I need to use a dictionary.’, I think you wanted to say ‘辞書が必要なので、ここまで書くのにまたすごく時間がかかりました’. I would say, ‘It (already) took me a lot of time to write this because I needed to use a dictionary.’or ‘It took me a lot of time to write this because I had to check my dictionary.’

気になったのは「ここまで」の‘until here’と、「～なので、～だから」の‘since’です。　‘until here’は何となくピンとこないので、私だったら無理にそれを英語にしないで、抜かしてしまうか、「ここまで」を「もうすでに」の‘already’にすると思います。　あと、理由を言う時の‘since’の使い方は、私はまだマスターしてないので、‘because’を使います。　私はまだ‘since’を「～して以来、～のときから（ずっと）」の意味でしか使えないので。。( 「～なので・だから」の because と since の違いがよく分かっていないんです)

It's just my version.　なので、参考意見ということでお願いします。

mi and asahi - ‘You are very busy writing!’ 私は使ったことがないけど、‘be busy doing’「～するのに忙しい」は、文法的にはOKなんじゃないかな・・という気がします。　でも‘300 pages!? You are very busy!’　これだけでも David は言いたいことを分かってくれると思いますよ＾＾
私からのアドバイスは、自分の言いたいことの一語一語を英語に訳そうとしないことです。　自分の言いたいことの大筋が合ってればよし、私はいつもそうしています。

mi - 私が1つだけ気になった部分は‘Thank you indeed.’です。　多分｢本当にありがとうございます｣と言いたかったのかな・・と思ったのだけど、普通に‘Thank you (very much).’でいいんじゃないかな。　Thanks. → Thank you. → Thank you very(so) much → Thank you very much indeed.　どんどん丁寧になる言い方ですが、私は 'indeed' を付ける version は使ったことがないです。 自然な英語だとは思うけど、ちょっとかしこまった言い方のような気がします。(What do you think, everyone?)

David, I know you are very busy at the moment, but can I ask you some questions?

1. What's the difference between 'because' and 'since' when both words mean ‘～なので・だから’.

2. When do you use this expression 'Thank you very much indeed'?

今回のお題について

言葉はキモチの容器だと思ってるので、適当な入れ物が
見つからなければ、無理に入れなくてもいいと思うし、
とりあえず、違うけど、入れとけっていうのもありだと
思ってます。時には、それに入れたらマズいだろうって
事もあると思うけど、私にはまだまだ先のことなので。

since についての意見をありがとう！　そうですね、私も since は両方に使えると思うんです。 私の疑問はその‘使い時’というか、because と全く同じ感覚で使えるのか、because と since、どちらを使うかは話し手の自由なのか、それとも何か決まりがあってニュアンスが違うのか・・という所です。

う～ん、もしかしたら私がなじみがないだけで、結構普通に使われてるのかも。。　なので、100%信じちゃダメですよ(笑)　大きく間違えてたら David が助けてくれると思ってトライしています＾＾　言いたい事を一辺に言うのは難しいので、短い文に分けるのはいい方法だと思いますよ。　Let's keep trying!

yea, I think your virsion sounds more natural. Actually, I don't know well the deference between 'because' and ' since' as well.
I read and heard some native speakers of English used 'since' in the same way as 'because',and then I just started copying them. I thought I kind of understood how to use both those words, but actually I don't understand.
(「その二つの言葉の使い方を何となくわかっているつもりでいたが、実際わかっちゃぁいない」と言いたかったのですが、この英文で合っているでしょうか？みなさん。）
And also I want to know the defference between 'as' and the other two words.

David, Can you please tell us about the defference among 'because', ' since' and 'as' ,too.

One more thing. It was just I didn't know the expression "you are very busy writing!" mi wrote . sorry ,mi ! You were right.

About Tomo’s question , my understanding at the
moment is as follows:
＊Since--- The content of ' since~ clause' is about what we have already known.
e.g. Aircraft noise is a particular problem here since we’re close to Narita airport

＊The phrase ‘Thank you (very much) indeed 'reminded me the movie" The remainder of the Day(日の名残り)". It doesn’t mean the phrase was spoken in the movie but convey the image. There, the butler(acted by Anthony Hopkins) spoke very politely. As Tomo said, it is the polite way of speaking, I think.

＊ I would say “You are very busy writing your new book”.（なしでもＯＫですが、your new bookを加えたほうが、私としては、理解しやすい。）

Since; when you say what both a speaker and a listener have already known.
eg/Since you have a feaver, you should stay home tonight.

と喜んで買って帰ったのですが、とりくんでみてびっくり。想像以上に喋れ
ませんでした。今は、Task5までを行ったり来たり（人や物の説明）してい
ます。

レコーディング、いいですね。まだそれ以前の段階で四苦八苦中なんです
が、ずいぶん昔にやった記憶があります。自分の声なのに、知らない人の
声が聞こえてきて、テレちゃいました。
I did record my voice in English at once.I was blushing after listen my voice
because the voice was perfectly strage.

I think both can be;

・You should stay home tonight because you have a fever.

Is there any difference? Do you use 'since' in the same way as 'because'? I think 'since' is often used at the beginning of a sentence when it means ‘～なので・だから’.

言いたかったのは、ぜんぜん英語ダメだった自分が、ここで、そしてDavidの本から学んで、できるようになったんだ、と言える位になりたい！ってことでした。うぅ～全然ちがった・・。

今、暇をつくっては、なるほどなるほどと、本を読んでいるのですが、いざ書こうとすると頭の中が真っ白に。しまいに日本語も浮かばなくなって、完全にフリーズしちゃいます。

先月から始めたばかりで、今はとにかく英語に親しむことを第一にやってる処です。できることをちょっとずつ増やして、その積み重ねで、しゃべれるようになりたいなと思ってます。と、いうか他に方法が思いつかなかったので。
I think my way of studying is looks like "Rock Climming."

なるほど、そういうことでしたか。　一つの文に言いたいことがたくさんつまってますね。　まずは言いたいことを簡単な短い文にしてみましょう。

「ぜんぜん英語ダメだった自分が、ここで、そしてDavidの本から学んで、できるようになったんだ、と言える位になりたい！」
この中には言いたいことが３つありますよね。　「自分の英語がダメなこと」、「これから勉強していきたいということ」、「いつか英語ができるようになりたいということ」　これを短い文に分けて英語にすると・・

1. My English is not good.(全然ダメと言いたいなら My English is poor. でもいいかもしれないですね）
2. I'm going to learn English with everyone here and David's book.
3. I want to be a good English speaker someday.

これをつなげて・・
My English is not good, but I'm going to learn English with everyone here and David's book, and I want to be a good English speaker someday!
なんていうのはどうでしょうか。

1つの文を短く簡単にして、それをつなげると楽になりますよ＾＾
