Do you know where the station is?

Hi Everyone,

Wow! It's been a long time since we had 61 comments on one entry! Anyway, I am glad to see so many new people joining in, and I want to say thanks to all the regular contributors for making all the newcomers feel so welcome.

As you know, I have been really busy trying to finish the new book. The manuscript is now complete, and I am going to Tokyo on Monday to go over it again with the editor. After that, it will just be a case of checking, checking, and more checking!

Anyway, here is another excerpt from the book. I guess that all the regulars know this already, but it might be interesting for others. Please let me know what you think.

Have a great weekend,

David

DO YOU KNOW? / I DON’T KNOW

× Do you know where is the station?
× I don't know what should I do.

○ Do you know where the station is?
○ I don't know what I should do.

The station is near the bank. Is the station near the bank? しかし、Do you know …?

Where is Peter? → Do you know where Peter is? (×Do you know where is Peter?)
Where does John live? → I don’t know where John lives.(×I don’t know where does John live.)

をWhat should I do?

What should I do? → I don’t know what I should do.

I don’t know what to do.

Comments

Hi David,
Congratulations on completing the manuscript!(even though you still need to check it again and again.)

About the excerpt(←I didn't know this word.), now I can make those sentences without thinking, but it used to be tricky and sounded a bit strange for me.

‘I don't know what to do.’, I found some other interesting examples.

・I don't know where to look.
I don't know where to start/begin.

By the way, have you decided the title of the new book?

Hi Amica,
‘Let's enjoy to learn English with us!’ enjoy あと、Let's は ‘let us’なので、‘with us’はなしで、‘Let's enjoy learning English together!’

Hi mi,
Anyway, I'm looking forward to reading your comments!

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Tomo

Hi ,David, regulars and all newcomers !!

I'm Q chan. It's been a while since I wrote my last
comment on this blog (which happens to me a lot...ha ha ha ^^; )

I am glad that the newcomers have made up their mind to join this blog . Reading David's entry is good enough to learn English, but since you start to write your own comment here, I bet your English will be more improved because you'll get new aspects of English ,for example you'll pay more attention to how to use the article, punctuation and
so on. Of course, don't be afraid to make mistakes
here ,nobody laugh at them because we all are learners here ! (^^;)

I can't wait for David's new book coming out in December.

Sorry, David's new book is coming out in October.

hello
I`m yohei
I want to thank you guys this great blog
I decided to join it and I wanna improve my english.

Gday、David's blog students
It's been getting extremely hot the past week here in Toyama. Well, obviously summer is almost here..

I cant wait to your new book DAVYYYYYY!!

anyway, I would like to talk about TOEIC. As you know TOEIC is a well known and popular English language qualification in Japan. Im 100% sure that most of the members here have tried it before, but let me ask you have taken it or not.lol If yes, could you tell me why? and was the score enough and helpful to you?
Well, the reason Im asking is, I have been studying for TOEIC for a couple of weeks. Since I graduaded from uni, I havent studied for ages.(I wasnt a good sutend though...I was lazy and naughty at the time..hehe)
By now Im already bored..I still cant find out which way inlife is good for me. You can get a good mark if you mastered the way to study for TOEIC but for me, Studying English for only TOEIC has no point! I understand that having a high score helps you step up at work and makes it easier to find a better job though....
What do you think?

PS It was just a whinge..i will try to stop whinging...lol

Hi everyone,

Welcome newcomers, and nice to meet you!

Wow, it is midnight again. However, I have to write a comment. Because I'm going to another place that there is no PC from tomorrow for three days.

Hi Tomo,
As you say, I've realized my English is getting better little by lettle.
Exactly from reading a lot of comments or sometimes make a comment, was useful way to get to know how to use the English word.
Therefore, I restart my commenting even it is late time.
Anyway, your English is simple and understandable, and also your Japanese explanation is helpful for me.

See you later,

Kiyoko

Hi David and everyone,

Can you tell me where is the station? I don't know what should I do.×と言ってしまいました。

Hi Asahi,
Thank you for your question. I think that the tea is delicious because water is different.
Actually, I drink very little tea. I love coffee.
I can’t explain my Britain life because I’m hiki(hikikomori).
I go to pub every weekend.
hiki

Hi Everyone!

Qchan - Welcome back!(I think I said this several times before. :p)

Yohei - Let's keep trying!

Meg - Actually, I've never taken TOEIC test, so I don't know much about it, but I'm going to take it sometime this year.(maybe!) It's just one of challenges for me. If I get a high or low score, I don't think(or try not to think) it shows my English ability. I do not like studying only for tests, either. It's boring, but I think having a clear goal(a clear idea of where you are trying to get to) is a good thing. It motivates you to study more, doesn't it? Good luck!

Kiyoko - Thanks for your message. Look forward to your next comment!

mi - Are you listening to the radio for your English study every morning? You are a hard worker! Keep writing, keep posting, and keep up the good work!(but don't push yourself.) Your English is getting better and better already;-)

Masa - I found your latest comment when I was re-reading old entries. I guess you posted it on the old entry by mistake, so let me copy and paste it here.

Here's Masa's comment.

『Hi, everyone!

It’s amazing!
It’s wonderful!!
I can’t believe this!!!

I’m afraid no one can understand what I mean.
Just clicking the “post” button gave me a lot of friends here and there in Japan and UK.
Besides, in one night!!
I’m not sure where you live now, though.
For reference、I live in Hyogo prefecture.

Some of you had mastered the lesson in the book,英語と仲直りできる本, some are moving forward step, and some of you are trying to start the lesson in” Practical English Usage’”.
I have an impression that you really love English, moreover, you have a positive mind.
To tell the truth, I hate to study English but I just want to enjoy English.
“Enjoy” is everything to me.

Every time I hear “Book for study”, I feel like running away on the spot.
Definitely I’m lazy. Therefore this blog is ideal for me to brush up my English,
“Enjoyment ”is everywhere.

Thanks to friends, I’m getting to have a feeling I can cope with English.

Bye for now, Masa』

I agree with you, Masa. We can have a lot of fun together. Let's enjoy!

Hope you are all enjoying your weekend,

Tomo

PS mi, Asahi, and Anne, この間話題になった‘be busy doing’をDavidが使ってくれたのに気が付きましたか? ‘As you know, I have been really busy trying to..’

Hi Masa,
Let's enjoy this blog!

Hi Meg,
I just have taken ToEIC today!
In fact, I want to get a high score, but I don't have a determination to get it. If I have such a determination, I think that it takes us a heavy pressure to get a high score. And studying English in order to get a high score for some English-language test makes less fun for us.

Hi David and everyone,
I went to Kobe for 内定者懇親会 yesterday. There are 50 people who will be my co-worker at the meet. Some of them have been to overseas to travel, for education and as a backpacker! So they are all better at English than me.
I have been to abroad, but I'm going to Thailand on September.

May ask a question?
「studying English in order to get a high score for some English-language test makes less fun for us.」
It makes less fun for us that 〜にしたほうがいいですか?

Hi Ikura,

‘Studying English in order to get a high score for some English-language test makes less fun for us.’
I would say, ‘It's not fun for us to study English just to get a high score on a test.’(テストでいい点を取るためだけに英語を勉強するのは楽しくない)

David,
Wow, you've completed the manuscript?
That's great! We can't wait to read it! , but you must be so tired. I hope you have time to chill out this weekend.

Hi Q chan,
Nice to meet you. Your sentence including 'since' and 'because' helps me understand how to use them even better. Thanks.

Hi Meg,
I've taken TOEIC twice. The first time was when I was in university, which was a long time ago, though, because many other students took the test. the result was something I really want to forget, terrible. and the second time was just after coming back from NZ, because I wanted to know how much I had improved my English. but the result wan't so good. Anyway , at least it was better than the last time.
I think, as you said, it could be a way of showing your English ability to companies if you are looking for a job. I don't think it means you can speak a good English even if your TOEIC score is high, so studying English only for TOEIC has no point for me,too. Nevertheless it would be difficult to get a high score unless you understood English well. anyway, what about just thinking it'll be a good experience for you?
I wish you luck :)

Hi hiki!
Thank you for answering me ;)
Can I ask you another question?
I don't think you are 'hikikomori', since you've studied English in the class and go to pub in the beach sandals and the red T-shirt every weekend:)
You need some time to get used to living in UK and it's a preparation period for that now.
あ〜、それに 'scorn with clotted cream and jam' ! lucky you!
Hope to hear from you soon.

Tomo,
I've noticed David used the phrase 'be busy doing' in his sentence:) 「
I didn't know Masa posted the second comment. Thank you for letting us know about that, tomo.
Masa,
I'm glad to be one of your friends:)

Hi Ikura,
About your question, yes, I think it may be better to start with the word ' It makes〜'. ' It makes less fun for us to study english 〜' is better?
By the way, are you planning to go to Thailand? it's fantastic! I want to have a Thai massage! I recommend you go to Chang Mai.

See you soon.

Asahi

Hi David
I didn’t know the word、excerpt.
At first, I thought your mistyping or something.
How stupid of me to think like that! I’m so sorry.
Then, I looked it up in the dictionary.

Like regular members praise highly, your explanation is excellent!
It’s really easy to understand. Thank you very much.

Hi Tomo
I posted my last comment on the old entry. Thank you for your kindness.
You are always aware of even a little thing, such as my mistake and “be busy ~ing.”
I must be more careful.

Hi hiki
Nice to meet you. I’m Masa, a newcomer.
I can imagine the beautiful scene that the comfortable wind is blowing… among the trees and the colorful flowers…. along the street.
Just like one scene in the movies. I found you enjoying beer, with facing the breeze . I haven’t met you before, thou.
How luxurious time you have! I envy you a lot!

Hi mi
You get up so early in the mornings, don’t you?
What time do you usually go to bed?
Today! I managed to get up at 6 o’clock! For my husband’s golf!!
After I saw him off at the gate, I went straight to bed. Zzzzzzz…..

Hi Q chan
I excerpted from your comment. “Don't be afraid to make mistakes here, nobody laugh at them because we all are learners here !

See you later. Masa

Hi Masa,

I guessed that most people wouldn't know that word, but I thought you would be able to work out the meaning from the context, so I decided to put it in.

Hi Ikura,

That sentence would have to be "It makes IT less fun for us to study English. "

Hi David,

Thank you for your help! Actually, those expressions like 'make it fun', 'make it easy', 'find it difficult' are still difficult for me. I understand them when I read, but I still can't produce them myself.
Anyway, it was good study for me as well. Thank you, David and Ikura!

Tomo

PS Masa, you are welcome;-)

Hi David,
The manuscript is complete? Congratulations! I'm looking forward to your new book.

Hi Tomo,
Thanks for correcting my mistake. "enjoy "の後の動詞は"-ing"になるんですね。…知らなかった^^;

Hi Everyone,
When I write comment in English, I usually make many mistakes, but I'm not afraid of it because "間違えた方が覚えられる". When I make a mistake, I learn by it.
Masa and mi, let's use English without fear of mistake together!

By the way, yesterday, I went to watch the movie "インディ・ジョーンズ".
I enjoyed the movie! Harrison Ford is wonderful! He is 60s, isn't he? Even so, Indiana Jones, played by him, was lovable character.

Hi Qchan,
Welcome back!

Hi hiki,
I have heard that there are the English who don't prefer tea. I was imagining all the English prefer tea, so when I heard it, I was surprised. But when I thought about it, there are Japanese who don't prefer rice, so I understood it. (My friend who lives in Italy said there are the Italian who don't prefer pasta!)

Hi Asahi,
Clotted cream? I didn't know it. I like the scone, especially with blueberry jam!

Hi ikura,
You are going to Thailand on September? That sounds interesting! I have never been there. Actually, I might go to Korea on October. (If I can take days off.)

Hi Meg,
I have never taken TOEIC test. To tell the truth, I didn't know the test until recently. When I first heard the name of that test, I heard wrong it.
「保育」と聞こえたので、保育士さん達のためのテストなのかなと思ってました。大バカ者ですね^^;

Hi Kiyoko,
Yes, reading lots of comments and writing on this blog is very good way to learn English. We are very lucky because we found this blog by chance and we joined here, aren't we?

See you soon,

Amica

Hi everyone,

何故かパソコンでforbidden(入ってくるなコノヤロー)と言われたので、携帯で打ち込みました。

Hi, Tomo,
Thank you a lot for your nice advice.
It may become less fun for us to study English just to get a high score on a test.

Hi, Asahi,
Chang Mai? Unfortunately, I'm going to and putting up at Bankok for 3 days.

Hi David,
Thank you for posting me your message. But I can't understand your advice.
What is IT?

see you,

Hi Amica,

whenever I hope, I can get time. これぞ学生の特権ですv(`∀´v)
I hope you can get days off.

ikura

Hi ikura,
It makes it less fun~の「itが必要ですよ~」、と言う意味をこめて、Davidは大文字のITにしてくださったんだと思います。
make+目的語(ここでの IT)+C(名詞、形容詞、過去分詞)

Does it make sense?

I'll post my comment later.

See you later,

Anne

Hi David,
It is so nice to know that the manuscript is compleate, even though you still have some work for it. I'm just wondering whether you have a time to ride your lovable bike this weekend? ;-)

Hi Q chan,
Welcome back! I'm looking forward to your comment again!

Hi hiki,
It sounds so nice that you go to a pub every weekend! Asahiが話していた'scorn with clotted cream and jam' は本当に美味しかった~:D

Hi Masa,
Let's enjoy learning English together! I think that it's difficult to learn something without fun! ;-) I also didn't know the word; excerpt!

Hi mi,
You listen to the radio programme every morning?

Hi Meg,
I haven't taken TOEIC and I don't know much about it. And I'm not sure it's true or not, but I hear that it's better to know(learn) a kind of technique to get a high score. I don't want to study only for it. I may take TOEIC sometime, and it's just a challenge for me like Tomo thinks. But I never contradict a way of getting a high score, because each person has a different motivation and it's good to have a clear goal what you want to get to. If you want to step up at work, therefore you need a TOEIC high score, I think you should challenge it! Good luck!;-)

Hi ikura,
Wow! You are going to Thailand! I haven't been there, but it sounds fun! You can get a time whenever you want? Oh~, I wish I could get a long vacation...I'm looking forward to your travel story!

Talk to you later,
Maki

Hi , Masa
Thanks to your excerpt from my last comment,
I found out my mistake. I should have written “nobody laughs at them ~” I forgot to put
‘s’ after the verb! (^^)/
Yes,Masa! Tomo is always so kind. When I posted my comment on the previous entry by mistake before, she noticed it and helped me.

I don't have much time tonight.

I hope that it'll be fine tomorrow because we have
☆TANABATA Festival☆.

Hi David,
The manuscript is complete? Wow! Congratulations! Now I can’t wait the day your book comes out , even though a lot of checking work would wait for you! (Sorry…)

Hi mi,
I’m also a morning person. I usually get up at around half past five in the morning.

Hi hiki,

Hi Meg,
I’ve never taken TOEIC, so I don’t know how it is like well, but I hear the content of it has changed a little bit since last year(? I’m not sure). I mean it stress much more on listening problem. I also hear a lot of companies encourage people working for the company to take it, and that sometimes would be stress them out. I took ‘Eiken’ a few years ago. Good thing in TOEIC is you don’t need to worry about whether you could pass or not.

Hi Q chan,
Welcome back! Actually, I was thinking about you!
Did you watch tonight’s ‘Atsuhime’?

Hi Tomo,
Of course I did!
Actually, I’ve been busy cleaning up my parents-in-law’s belongings these days, and I would be busy for the next few months, because my father-in-law passed away at the beginning of the last month. As an eldest son’s wife of the family, there are a lot of things to do, and I ‘m sometimes at a loss how to do.

Hi Ikura,
Are you going to Thailand? Lucky you!

By the way, talking of the word ’excerpt’, it reminded me of the book, “ Excerpts from a Family Medical Dictionary”(家庭の医学) , which I read a few months ago. It is a novel by Rebecca Brown who is one of my favorite novelists, and is written in simple English and touching.

Bye for now,

Anne

Hi again,
I wrote ' I get up at around half past five', but the sentence would have to be 'I get up around half past five', if I stress '~
What do you think, members?

Anne

Hi Tomo and Maki,
There are champagne and wine and yakitori.
There is a beer like juice,but I don't like it.

Hi Asahi and Amica,
Sorry,My explanation is not enough.
I said cappuccino but clerk heard it cup of rea.

Hi Masa,
Nice to meet you,too.
Yes,it's like one scene in the movies.

hiki

Hi all, Good morning,

I can't wait the day→I can't wait for the day
・I don't know how it is like well→I don't know what it is like well
・I mean it stress much more→I mean it stresses much more

Have a nice day!

Anne

Good morning,Everyone

It is raining today!
I hope it will clear up tonight.
Yes!
されちゃってますので、ついついこう思ってしまいます^^;

David

Thank you for your good sentence.
"I have been really busy trying to finish the new book" I copied it into my notebook.

Masa

I'd like to say 御疲れ様 to you^^;
I usually go to bed around 1am.
Thank you for your good comment!
It makes me smile.

tomo

Good morning.Yes,I found it,too!
Thank you!

I have been busy taking care of a kitten
since the day before yesterday.
(This sentence is just for practice^^;)

Hi!Maki

Thank you! Your comment cheers me up.

Hi! Anne

You are also a morning person!?
I like morning fresh air.
I usually get up around ten minutes to six.
しかしニュウアンスの違いが解ってません。すいません^^;

hiki

You enjoy drinking beer every weekend!?
It sounded cool
Please don't drink too much^^

Hi!Ikura

Sawadii ka! WOW Thailand!
It brings back good memories of the day when I was young. ←(多分これ英語間違えてる^^;

I like spicy food and thai music also.
Do you like spicy food?
See you!Pop kan mai na ka!

I haven't finished reading all the comments.
Sorry,It takes me a long time to read comments.

。See you around!

Good morning, Everyone!

Qchan, my daughter is going to have a Tanabata party at the kindergarten today, but unfortunately, it was raining this morning, and now it's cloudy..

Anne、 「
I'm sorry to hear about your father-in-law. I understand your situation because I'm also an eldest son's wife of the family.(I don't like this idea, though..) Don't push yourself, Anne. Take care:)

hiki, they have Yakitori too?! I didn't know that! I don't like beer, but I like champagne and wine;-)

mi, you don't have to read all comments. I used to skip some comments especially difficult and long ones when I started to join in;-) Take it easy!

Talk to you later,

Tomo

Hi Meg
I’m totally agree with Asahi, ikura and Tomo. It’s no point to study English only for TOEIC.
It motivates you to study English more.
In my personal opinion, as a result, TOEIC score would be apparently effective to get a better job at the judgment of the last stage . Hang in there!!

Hi hiki
What? Beer belly? No way!!!
You are slender and look good in red.
Please don’t break my imagination!

Hi, everyone

I got your book today, and so..
I am so embarrassed!!

I will write comments after I finish
reading this book.

See you! Stay Healthy

Hi hiki,
I also like champagne and wine, though I don't like beer.

Hi Q chan & Tomo,
Tanabata is on 7th of August in my area. We take "kyureki", but I don't know why...

Hi Anne,
I recieved the book today and I looked through only the first several pages, but it seems interesting, not only for learning English, but also for reading. (This sentence makes sense?)
I'm very sorry to hear about your father-in-law. Please accept my deepest sympathy and take care.

Hi mi,
You can speak Thai, can't you? That's great!

By for now,
Maki

Hi mi,
How about keep studying here with David's book?

Hi everyone,
I got the book 'Practical English Usage' last week as well. As Maki said, it's also interesting for reading. I'm not sure the difference between English version and Japanese version well, but one thing I can say is that' 目で理解できない’.
Tomo and Amica, imagine the David's book 'Learning English Vocabulary' which we got from him, and if you can handle it, then it's OK for you to understand the content. It's up to your preference.

Hi Tomo and Maki,
Thanks for your kinds words. I don't like the word and idea'長男の嫁', either.
Maki, I watched the news about G 8 and Toyako on TV , and I hear now in Toyako more than 20,000 policemen gathered.

Bye for now,

Anne

Hi again,

*少し訂正;
How about keep studying→How about keeping your study

Anne

Hi everyone,
It was TANABATA yesterday. Did anyone write your wishes on a strip of paper? I haven't done it for ages .
I didn't know that TANABATA used to be celebrated on August 7th. Thanks for the information, Q-chan.
I wish I could see the Milky way on TANABATA day.
Has anyone ever seen it?

Hi Amica,
Clotted cream is like something in between fresh cream and butter. It has a rich taste , which I love:) A scorn with blueberry jam is also good!

Hi Ikura,
Oh, ok. traveling to Bankok also sounds exciting. My trip to Thailand was about 7 years ago. The city must have changed a lot ,I guess. I'm looking forward to your report about Thailand.

Hi Anne,
思わず" I see!"
I'm so sorry to hear about your father-in-law.
take care.

Hi hiki,
Oh, now I get it!

Hi mi,
I agree with Anne. I guess It'll be more effective to study here with the book.
Anyway, hope to hear from you soon:)

By for now

Asahi

Hello,Everyone

Anne Asahi Thank you for your advice.

I am panicking and so I have to calm down myself! And I should read some david's books
Please give me a little more time.
たった2-3行なので、日記というより、メモ書きですが^^;
I have been writting im my diary since last month.

今は I feel goodです。

Hi Maki

Ionly speak a little Thai, but I completely forgot.
Thank you. koo pu kun mark ka!

See you!have nice cay.

Hi mi,
I agree with Anne and Asahi, but I understand your feelings too.
Anyway, we'll be waiting for you here and looking forward to hearing from you again soon!

Hi Maki and Anne,
You got the book 'Practical English Usage' ? I'm still thinking about it.

Hi Asahi,
I have seen the Milky way at a planetarium, but I haven't seen the real one.

See you soon,

Tomo
