My Summer Holiday
Hi everyone,
Our tests finished yesterday, and I have handed in all my grades, so I am ready to go! I spent about two hours last night packing all my stuff, so all I have to do now is attach the cases to the bike, check the tyre pressure, and fill it up with petrol. I'm going to leave Seto at about 9 o'clock tonight, and then the ferry leaves from Tsuruga at 1.15 in the morning. It arrives in Tomakomai at 8 o'clock on Friday night, and then I'm going to ride up to Sapporo. I hope it doesn't rain! I haven't been to Hokkaido for 2 years, so I am really excited about this trip. Also, I have been working more or less non-stop since last November, so I am looking forward to taking a nice relaxing break.
I had a meeting with the book designer this morning, and we have agreed on the final design for my version (not the ALC version - that will be decided in September). I am not planning to do much work while I am in Hokkaido, but I am going to print out the manuscript and take it with me so that I can check for mistakes if I have any free time.
I'm coming back to Seto on the 12th, but then I only have one day before I leave for Thailand. That is going to be a very busy day because I have to make changes to the manuscript before I send the final data to the printer, so I may not have time to do another entry. While I am in Hokkaido and Thailand, I won't have my computer with me, but I might be able to write some comments when I am staying at my friend's house or at a hotel. Anyway, I hope you will keep the conversation going through the summer, and I will show you the pictures when I get back.
Have a great summer, and I will try to join you when I can.
Bye for now,
David

Hi David,
Finally, the day comes! You have been working hard for a long time; I remember we read your word lists, and then you published the book this early spring.
You really desrve to have a long holiday in Hokkaido and Thailand!
I hope you have a lovely time there and recharge your energy and I'm happy for you.
Looking forward to your story and the photos!
Enjoy yourself and have a safe trip!
PS.
Yes, it's OK. We can manage to keep the conversation going.

Hi David,
Probably you've already left Seto for the ferry. Incidentaly I'm going to Tomakomai tomorrow, though I will leave there before 8pm. The weather will rain this weekend, but it will be fine from Monday. It would be a good change for you after your very busy days. Have a lovely time here in Hokkaido! And also in Thailand!
Talk to you soon!

Hi David and everyone
Are you going to a long holiday to Hokkaido aren't you? I'm jealous you. I have never been to out from the Honsyuu. (Now I went out thought..)
And will you go on a overnight to Thailand? Of course you will leave your bike in Seto? Anyway sounds very excited trip. Have a fun.
My sons neighbour friends came back home from their holiday this morning. they went to there for 18days! Usually when I book my holiday at a travel agent they ask me 1week or 2weeks? it mean I have to take a holiday at least 1week. of course can be chose 3days or 4days. but it not big different cost. so I could really take a rest at there.
Speak soon

Hi David,
As member said, you need to have rest and relaxation time, so I hope you have a lovely time and you get an energy on your holiday.
I'm looking forward to your trip's story!
Hi Tomo and Jazmin,
Thanks for explaining about "痛む". I didn't know there were such a lot of words to express "痛む". As Tomo said, I can't remember them all, neither....
Hi Rico,
I know that Westerners usually have long-term holiday. They say most of Japanese overwork because we have long-term holiday little. Honestly, I wonder why Westerners are able to have such long-term holiday. If we (Japanese) had such a holiday, we would be dismissed. Probably, we (Japanese) can barely have a week's holiday. Sometimes I envy Westerners, but if I had long holiday like their holiday, I might not know what to do.(笑)
Hi Everyone,
As you know, David started to Hokkaido. Do you have a plan for your summer holiday? I'm going to have my summer holiday 5 days on this August, but I have no plan to go out. Actually, I have an concert at the end of this August, so I have to practice nearly every day even when I spend holiday. I think I wouldn't feel like going on an outing. But my sister and her sons are going to stay at my house, so I'm looking forward to having lovely time with them.
See you soon,
Amica

Hi David and everyone,
David may be in the ferry to Tomakomai and he will arrive at 8 o'clock tonight. And then he will be going to ride up to Sapporo, by his schedule.
David, have a great time in Hokkaido and Thailand.
If I could, I would like to fly to there right now. I really love Hokkaido, anyway.
Tomo, what I have to say, your memory was excellent so I was surprised. I often realize good-sayings and words, when I read David's comment or member's. However, I sadly forget.
Anne, thank you for letting us You Tube video news. I watched it. I felt pure passion in the expression of his eyes. It was too young death, he was.
I've been having a long holiday, called everyday is Sunday, since my husband has retired. So I have no special plan in this summer, too.
However, my family will come to my house and have a family party. At the time, I change a hostmother and I treat them as possible as I can.
Have a nice weekend,

Hi Rico,
18 days?? My husband will envy them because he has only 3 days for his summer holiday this year!
Hi Amica,
My family is going to go on a trip this month, from August 11 to 13. During the trip, I don't have to cook, wash, or clean!(I have to do the laundry a lot when I'm back, though.) Last year, we went to an onsen in Fukushima, and I got a massage with aroma oil in the hotel we stayed. It felt so good, and I loved it. We are going somewhere else this year, but my husband says that there is also an esthetic clinic in the hotel we are going to stay, so I'm looking forward to that!
Hi Kiyoko,
Thank you! But I don't remember everything. I just remembered that David used the word 'sore' before, so I checked old entries again.
Have a great weekend, and see you all soon.
Tomo
PS David, are you in Hokkaido now? How was your journey on the ferry?

Hi everyone,
How’s your weekend?
Today was the second hottest day in this summer around here, and the temperature was over 37 degrees, but strangely I seemed to get used to this heat.
Talking of a holiday, as Riko said , people in Europe and America can afford to take a long holiday including prime ministers or presidents.
Amica, are you going to have a concert? That must be exciting, but must be busy with preparing for it. Nothing is more wonderful than having a relaxing time with your sister and nephews, right?
By the way, I have listened to Sara Brightman’s ‘Scarborough Fair’ , and I heard her version on TV commercial or something. It was so beatutiful.
Tomo,A massage with aroma oil? I’m jealous of you!
I don’t have a plan to go out this summer, though my husband has 6 days for his summer holiday( not at a time); most of the days are for Obon rituals, and the rest of them would be for having a relaxing time staying at home.
Actually I myself am planning towards kind of long holidays in this October.
Jazmin, thanks for letting us know the interesting site . I browsed other parts of the site , and enjoyed them.
David, how’s your trip? Was it cloudy there?
Bye for now,
Anne

Hi Everyone,
How was your weekend? It had been raining heavily during the weekend. So I thought that it wasn't fun to ride a bike. David, how was your weekend?
Today the temperature was up to 26c in my area. It is hot enough for us, though I know that it's almost 10 degrees lower than yours.
Amica, you must be busy for preparing the concert. Before that, please take rest and enjoy being with your sister and nephews!
Tomo, you are going to Onsen? Taking a bath and a massage sounds so lovely!
I don't have any plan for my summer holiday, though I have 9days (including Saturdays and Sundays) for it this year. It is a bit longer than usual. Actually I tried to get free air tickets to use my frequent flier miles, but I couldn't get them. So now I have no plan. Anyway I will have a relaxing time at home.
Talk to you later,

。(David, are you enjoying yourself?)
Maki、Thank you!
Amica、

Welcome to the blog!
Are you studying how to write an essay in English? It's difficult to put your ideas into writing even in your own language, isn't it? How to organize your thoughts.., hmm, I think you should read a lot. I recommend David's entries. He is good at writing, and his writing is well-organized and easy to understand, so I think it's good study for you.
David taught us how to join sentences before on the blog.
When you use conjunctions(接続詞) to join simple sentences, follow these rules:
1. Do not join more than three simple sentences.
2. Do not use more than two conjunctions in the same sentence.
3. Do not use the same conjunction twice in the same sentence.
‘And’, ‘but’, ‘so’, and ‘or’ are used to join simple sentences. Do not use them to start a new sentence.
×My mother likes cooking. And my father likes reading
×My sister lives at home. But my brother lives in Tokyo.
These sentences should be:
My mother likes cooking, and my father likes reading.
My sister lives at home, but my brother lives in Tokyo.
In English, ‘and’, ‘but’, and ‘so’ are used to join sentences. It is sometimes possible to use them to start a new sentence, but this is an advanced technique, and the basic rule is not to do it.
Can I try to rewrite some parts you wrote?
so David is on holiday now at Hokkaido.
that great, I love travel too. and bike ride sounds so cool.

David is on his holiday, and he is in Hokkaido with his bike. That's great! I love to travel, too. Actually, I live in Hokkaido. It's been sunny for the last couple of days, so I think David is having a great time.
I don't think I can enjoy this summer holiday because I'm a third year high school student, so I have to study for the entrance examination.
Good luck with your studies!

Hello, Tomo
Thank you for your abvice.
That is really helpful for me.
It seems like that "conjunction" is the key when making sentence.
I try to post a lot of comment into this blog, and that will help to
improve my skill.
Anyway, it seems that everyone is having a nice summer holiday.
I can`t take a holiday this year. But my home is located remote area, so I can get relax just go out a little bit from my house.
I went to a open campus of 国際教養大学 at July 20th, and I was amazed by their library. It is made of 秋田杉. And I liked their school principle.
After that I visited my relatives at Tokyo. I was amazed with
the temperature of Tokyo. It so hot and so humid that I was almost knocked down. so I`m glad to be back home again.
talk to you later.

You are welcome. I hope everything is going well with you. Look forward to reading your comments!
Hi Amica,
Thanks! In 3 days, I'll be having a nice relaxing time there;-)
Hi hiki,
‘be going to 動詞の原形’ 「~するつもり」という予定の文ですよね。 これを使って「行く予定」と言うなら‘go’がいります。 hiki の考えであってますよ^^
ただ、I’m going to go Zermatt and Grindelwald etc. I’m going to Zermatt and Grindelwald etc.
I go to Zermatt and Grindelwald.
I と go の間に‘am going to’を入れるので、
I'm going to go to Zermatt and Grindelwald.
I'm going to Zermatt and Grindelwald.
In late August, I'm going to/I'm going to go to Zermatt and Grindelwald, Switzerland.
I'm going to/I'm going to go to Zermatt and Grindelwald in Switzerland in late August.
In late August, I'm going to Zermatt, Grindelwald, and other places in Switzerland.
In late August, I'm going to go to Switzerland and visit lots of places, like(/including) Zermatt and Grindelwald.

Hi team,
I'm in Mashu Youth Hostel, near Lake Mashu. It's 19 degrees here! Today, I climbed Mashu Dake. I have never been up it before, but it was amazing. I spent about an hour sitting on the top just looking at the scenery. The lake was a really deep blue colour, and I could see all the way to the Ohotsuku Sea. Yesterday, I rode around Shiretoko and then down to the Notsuke Peninsula. The weather has been fantastic all this week, and I could see all the islands that Japan and Russia argue about. I'll show you the pictures when I get back from Thailand. Last night, I was staying at my favourite youth hostel in Hamakoshimizu. The youth hostel is by two lakes, and the owner has a telescope at the upstairs window for guests to watch the wildlife. This morning, I saw a family of deer playing in the water, and yesterday, there were herons and an eagle taking a bath.
At about 10 o'clock last night, I rode from Hamakoshimizu to Lake Kussharo to visit my favourite onsen. On the way, I rode over the Nogami Pass. The stars were so beautiful that I stopped my bike and lay down in the middle of the road for about 5 minutes just looking up at the sky. The onsen is a rotenburo right on the edge of the lake, and while I was lying in the bath looking up at the sky, I saw 3 shooting stars. I love Hokkaido!
Tomorrow, I am riding down to Obihiro to visit my friend Aoki san. I am going to go for a ride with him on Sunday, and then on Monday, I'm going to ride around Erimo Misaki before getting back to Tomakomai to catch the ferry on Monday night.
Anyway, I'm glad to hear that you are all well, and thanks for keeping the conversation going.
Hi Yanpin, welcome to the blog. There are lots of people here who will help you, so please feel free to ask questions.

Hello
How are you doing?
I hope David is having a good time in Hokkaido.
It seems that he is visiting east part of hokkaido.
I`m living west part of hokkaido so I`m envy you because I usually
don`t go there. I went to that part of hokkaido a couple of times when I was a little kid, and I remember it was a beautiful sight.
And as usual, I`m working on English essay. I searched lot of information concerning English essay and I got structutre of essay but it still hard to write sentence coherently. Also I think I`m a lack of information about world affairs and so on.
I want to know how do you start writing, strating sensence is so hard. I always can`t come up with good introduction, some of my introduction are so strange and I can`t connect every sentence
coherently. For me your post seems so organized and coherent,
how can you do that?

Hi Yasu,
As Anne and Maki said, you can get the book from online stores. Actually, I got David's books on the Net. If you don't like online shopping, just go to a bookstore and order it.(like Anne suggested) I think you can get it a few weeks later.
Hi Anne,
Portland is in America, is it? Thanks for the information!
Hi Yanpin,
Wish I could help, but your question is difficult for me because I've never written 。)
Hi Everyone,
I'm going to a hot spring resort tomorrow. I'm staying there three days and two nights. After the trip, I'm planning to change my Internet connection. I'm using my ADSL at the moment, but I'm going to change it to fiber-optic one(hikari). If there is some trouble with the setting on my computer, I may not able to be on line for a while. I hope it goes well.
Hope you are having a great summer.
See you all soon,

Hi David and everyone
I haven’t written a comment for a long time.
I am glad that everyone seems doing fine.
I already took my summer vacation in July. I went back to Okinawa for a week.
I haven’t been back there during summer time for ages. So I forgot that how hot in there at this time of year!!! I couldn’t spend without sunglasses in the daytime. Usually I don’t go to the beach, but not this time, because my younger sister came back from America with her two kids. I was really looking forward to spending time with them. We went to the beach, an aquarium, a limestone cavern, a park with a lot of birds and some animals in there, and so on. I had really good time, so I did not want to go back to Tokyo.
David, you’ve been spending a great time in Hokkaido, and going to Thailand this week, right? I wish you will have a good time in Thailand, too.
Hi Tomo
You are going to hot spring resort tomorrow?
Have a great time in there!!!

Hi amo,
Nice to have you back! And glad to hear that you had a great time with your family in Okinawa.
I just packed all our(my family) stuff and did the laundry, so I'm ready to go. I'm looking forward to having a nice relaxing time there!
See you soon,
Tomo

Hi everyone,
I have been to Prague and Český Krumlov in Czech Republic, both UNESCO World Heritage sites. The breathtaking scenery of historic towns and friendly people made me a great fan of Czech Republic. I was so impressed by the fact that the medieval towns are amazingly well preserved despite its tumultuous history.
Hi Amica,
You have a concert? Are you a professional musician? Great! Break your legs!
Hi hiki,
You’re going to Zermatt? Luck you! I’ve been there once and I can’t forget the awesome beauty of Matterhorn and glaciers. I highly recommend you go to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. The highest cable-car in Europe easily takes you to the highest sightseeing point in Europe (3,883m high!) Bon voyage!
Hi Tomo,
I hope you are having a wonderful trip with your family. I found that this blog can work without David (for a while, I mean. I hope David doesn’t read this…) but not without you. You’re a hardworking, intellectual and indispensable member. And last but not least, you’re so sweet!

Hi Jazmin,
You seemed to have a great time in Prague and Cresky Krumlov, and it’s good for you!
Talking of Prague, it reminds me of ‘Prague Spring’ and a novel related to it’s period.
Someday I’d love to visit there, too!
Hi amo,
Long time no see!
I haven’t gone to the beach for ages.
Is the sun in Okinawa stronger, right?
Sorry, I can’t say how to write or organize essay, but as for information about world affairs,
you can get them by reading an English newspaper.( It’s so basic, though.)
Weekly newspaper would not be that difficult, and be helpful, I think. ( Asahi weekly from 朝日新聞、Mainich weekly from 毎日新聞)
Hi Tomo,
I hope you are having a lovely time with your family, and aroma massage makes you relax!
Hi David,
You are leaving for Thailand tomorrow, and are you going to scuba diving?
I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer holiday.
Speak to you soon!

Hi David,
Are you going to Thailand after the trip to Hokkaido? I'm so jealous! As you said, you've been working more or less(←I didn't know this expression.) non-stop since last November, so you and your body must be very tired even if you don't notice about it. All you need now is to get a lot of rest and relax. I think the beautiful scenery of Hokkaido will make you feel better.
We'll try to keep the conversation going through the summer, but please join us when you have a chance, and please don't forget that we're missing you:)
Have a lot of fun on your tripS!
Tomo
