Going home for Christmas

Hi everyone,

We have a saying about colds in Britain. "If you go to the doctor and take medicine, your cold will be better in about 7 days. If you just carry on with life as usual, it will take about a week." Actually, I am feeling a lot better now, but that is mainly because I have just finished writing a big part of my PhD thesis and because I have just finished writing another book. This one is about English writing, and it will be ready in February.

This will be my last entry until 2009 because I am going back to the UK for Christmas.

I'm leaving on Sunday, and I will be back on January 5th. This will be my first Christmas in the UK for a long, long time, so I'm quite excited about it. Also, of course, I will be rich because of the way the exchange rate has changed. Last time I went home, one pound cost about two hundred and twenty yen; now, it costs about one hundred and forty! I will be going home with a very light suitcase and coming back to Japan with a very heavy one.

I'm not sure about my plans for New Year's Eve, but I usually like to climb a mountain and think about all the things that have happened over the past year. Actually, I am not the only person who likes to do this. There is a big mountain near my parents' house in Wales that has an old fort on the top, and lots of people go up there on New Year's Eve.

2008 has been a crazy year for me. I have written four books and started my own publishing company, as well as doing my job at Nanzan. I haven't ridden at Suzuka at all, but I did have a nice trip to Hokkaido on my BMW in the summer. Over the next few days, please write your own reflections on 2008, and then when I come back, we can all write about our plans for 2009.

When I am in the UK, I won't be able to do any new entries, but I think I will be able to make comments, so I will let you know how things are going.

Thanks for all your support this year, and I hope this community will grow even bigger and stronger in 2009.

Have a great Christmas!

David

Comments

Hi David,

You are surely happy and quite rich, I think. Has the exchange rate eighty yen different per one pound? Wow, what a huge difference!! You are lucky man, aren't you? You might be rich more near in the future, I hope so.
Have you written four books? You are really powerful, aren't you? Anyway, you had good jobs to English learners.

I started commenting on this site this January, and I didn't constantly do it, but I have studyed many popular phrases from this blog. I'm going to continue making comments next year.
Thank you sooo much everything. Have a nice trip!

everyone,
My house works are attacking me, so I have to leave here.
Tomo and Anne, thanks for your nice words.

See you soon,

Kiyoko

Hi David and everyone,
"If you go to the doctor and take medicine, your cold will be better in about 7 days.If you just carry on with life as usual,it will take about a week."

Exactly. It's interresting.Thank you for telling us a saying in Britain.

I'm glad to hear that you're feeling a lot better.
David,I'm looking forward to your comment from UK.
Please tell us how you're celebrating Christmas
and New Year. It must be different from ours.

I wish I could go abroad because yen is so strong now.

I'll write my own reflections on 2008 later.

Have a nice trip!

Hi David,

It's good to know that you feel a lot better. A saying about colds sounds interesting, and it is true in a sense.
You are leaving on Sunday?
Your family are absolutely excited about spending time with you for Christmas too! Have you prepared some presents for the family?
I hope you have a nice flight and a lovely holiday in Wales.

I'll post my own reflections on 2008 later.

Anne

Hi David,

Glad to hear you are feeling better. The saying is funny! By the way, I said that I didn't mind colds very much, but it means that I don't mind MY cold, so I do mind your cold. I mean, I'm always worrying about you as one of the blog family;-)

You wrote another book? You really love writing! Is the book just for students? I'm very interested.

I just had a look at your last post for 2007, and you said, ‘2007 was a very busy year for me.’ You are always very busy!(笑) But you've been crazily busy this year, so 2008 has been a crazy year for you, but it's also a big year for you, isn't it? You did a big job!

I also hope this community will grow even bigger and stronger in 2009. Let's make it!

Have a safe and nice flight and a wonderful time with your family.(You'll be rich in the UK, so you'll have a lot of fun!)
Look forward to reading your commentS from the UK:)

Tomo

PS I'll do my review of 2008 later.

PPS Anne, you are still young enough to be able to have an adventure;-)

Hi David,
It's so nice to know that you are feeling a lot better. A saying about colds sounds very interesting! Probably we don't have such a kind of saying in Japanese.
I think that you've done a lot of work during this year. It's a good change for you to spend Christams time with your family. As Anne said, your family also are excited about spending a time with you.
I hope that you have a pleasant flight and a lovely holiday!

I'll post my own reflections on 2008 later, as I am going to Tokyo area on business tomorrow and coming back on Wednesday.

Have a lovely weekend!

Maki

If you go to the doctor and take medicine, your cold will be better in about 7 days. If you just carry on with life as usual, it will take about a week

I know that the English people don't care about colds even though it is a flu? The English mothers take her new born baby out soon. and when they have a temperature, to take off clothes, sometimes to take cold water bath?
Maybe you didn't care when you have clods?

I look forward to seeing the team in this blog

See you in 2009 again.

Hi everyone,

Where does David fly in the area?
Yesterday, I walked for four and half hours to birds watching along the river in my town. It was a clear day.
There are near 40 kinds of wild birds around river side. I often walked a part fo this path, but I mostly didn't notice be there, they are.
Amazingly, regular members can see them with naked eye. I depended on chief's guide and point out, but it was hard to find it. Because they have protective coloration and their figure is small, besides they are not stay at the same place, so that I hardly saw it in starting time, but going on time my eyes used to finding in the sky, on the tree, surface of the water.

FirstI loved kingsidher(カワセミ). That had a yellow epron and like a emerald green head. It was really beautiful and stood without moving on the coloured leves. I firstly saw it with binocular telescope.

Next I loved grebe(カイツブリ). That was in the water-weed and his body was light brown with stripes. He sometimes was on and out of water, slowly in my binocullar telescope. It was very cute!

Third I loved sandpiper(イソシギ). The name of this bird is popular on Hollywooe movie with Elizabeth Tailor.
Sdee you later,
Kiyoko

Hi team,

Here's my translation of the last entry of 2008.

See you tomorrow.

Tomo

Hi everyone,

I was going to do my review of 2008 today, but I'm busy doing some other things, so I'm going to do it after Christmas.

My daughter's kindergarten is over, so she is on her winter vacation. My sons' schools will be over the day after tomorrow, so they will also be on their holidays soon.
Tomorrow is a national holiday, and my husband doesn't have to work, so we are going to have a Christmas party tomorrow. We are having a special dinner, some cake and wine. Of course Santa Claus is coming to my house on the night of Christmas Eve, so I'm looking forward to seeing my children's faces on the morning of the 25th.

Have a lovely Christmas!

Tomo

PS David - Are you having a great time with your family? How's the weather there? Is it cold?

Hi everyone;)

In 2008, I passed the entrance examination of university and entered the college.
I met many new friends there.(I made friends with lot of people)
And I had part-time job in the first time.

This year had a lot of new things for me !!!

Hi green★

Congratulations!(a little belated, though)
I'm glad to hear that you are enjoying your new life.
I hope a lot of good things happen to you in the New Year as well!

Hi David and everyone,

How have you been? I've already finished a Christmas party with my family
because my younger son returned home the day before yesterday. New year is coming soon, and
I know we are able to celebrate this day even if we don’t clean the house, but as a Japanese,
I feel guilty having this special day without cleaning up my house, so I’m a bit busy with
my housework. On Christmas Eve, I stay at home and have dinner with my husband as usual, but it’s nice for me. I’ll do my review of this year later.

Hi David,
I hope you are having a lovely time with your family!
Is it snowing there?

Hi Green★,
Belated Congratulations!
This year has become so special for you: you started a new life.
I hope your college life would be happy and wonderful ones.

Everyone, have a happy Christmas!

Bye for now,

Anne

  Here's wishing you all,

   ✾Happy Christmas!✾

         Tomo

*☆*:;;;:*☆*:;;;:*☆*:;;;:*☆*

Happy Christmas everyone. I am at my parents' home in North Wales. Both my brothers are here with their children, and there are toys all over the floor. My mother tells me that the last time I was at home for Christmas was 1996, so it's even longer than I thought.

Anyway, I hope you are all having a great day.

See you soon,

David

Happy Christmas, David. The last time you were at home for Christmas was 1996? It's been 12 years! I guess the happiest person in your family is your mother.
By the way, what did you get for Christmas?

Anyway, I hope you are having a wonderful time with your family.

Look forward to hearing from you again soon.

Tomo

Hi David and everyone,

This morning Japan was hit a cold wave, and the wind is soooo cold, but it is not snowing around here including Seto. How's the weather in your area?

David, 12 years! It's really a long time, isn't it?
Anyway, it's nice you are having a great Christmas with your family.

My 2008:

My 2008 has become kind of a turning point for me.
This June, my father-in-law passed away; it was a sudden thing. It meant the end of my life as a kind of caregiver; I've been taking care of my parents-in-law for 6 years at home and 2 years at a hospital.
This October, I went to the UK by myself for the first time. Actually, it was my first travel abroad except for a one-week tour to America about 30 years ago when I was in college. I studied at a language school for 2 weeks and traveled for a week there. It gave me a lot to think about not only learning English but also some other things. It took me much energy to prepare everything by myself, but it was really good for me.
One more important thing," Diet!". Hmm... I'm afraid I need to lose weight...^^;) After returning from the UK, I can't give up eating something sweet; it is strange I didn't want to eat sweets while I was there.
Lastly, thank you for everything,David and members! Sometimes my mind became so weak that it was difficult for me to keep posting, but thanks to you all, I could continue joining, and it is the most worthwhile thing for me!

By the way, I'm going to a short trip to Wakayama from tomorrow ,and will be back on 29th.

See you then,

Anne

Hi team,

Did you enjoy Christmas? I put away the Christmas tree and some ornaments in my house today. It was kind of lonely to put them away because it made me feel like it was over, but the New Year is just around the corner, so I have to move on.
Anyway, here's my review of 2008.

My youngest daughter started to go to kindergarten this spring, so I was able to have more free time than before, and I spent a lot of time studying(or practicing) English this year. I started my own blog in April, and I started to write my diary in English - which is something I tried and gave up in a week before - on the Web. Before I started my blog, I was not sure if it was a good idea or not, or if I could keep it up or not. I couldn't make up my mind soon, but thanks to you all, I decided to start it, and I keep writing as well as joining this blog.
When I try to do a new thing, I always think about it too much and think of ‘buts’, but I usually think, “It was much easier than I had thought” after I did it. I know I shouldn't think about things too much, butthat's the way I am. I can't help it.(But, thanks to this blog, I've learned how to take the first step and challenge myself already;-))
Anyway, I met a lot of new people on this blog and my blog this year. One of them made a chat room for us, and we had two chat events using that room.(Thanks Riko!) It was the first time I had had a chat on the Internet, but it was a lot of fun!(We had a great time, didn't we?) I think the events made this community better and stronger. I'm going to hold some chat events in 2009 as well, and actually, I'm planning to organize some other blog event in spring, but it's still a secret. I'll tell you all about it when David comes back;-)

As I said, I spent a lot of time studying English this year, and I've been making notes of it on my blog since this April. I spent about 470 hours for my English studies in all! I think I can say to me, “Good job!” (I just had a look at my review of 2007, and I said, “I want to say ‘Well done!’ to me. ・・毎年、自画自賛してていいのかしら。。(笑))
Anyway, I'm going to keep studying and practicing English in 2009 as well. Where's my goal? ..I don't know, but I know it's not where I am. I still have a long way to go, so I keep going.

David and everyone, thanks for all your help this year too. I'm really happy to be here as one of the blog family. Of course I'll be joining this blog in the new year as well.
Let's learn a lot, help each other, and have a lot of fun!

Wishing you all a Happy New Year!

See you soon,

Tomo

PS Anne, thank you, too! Have a nice trip;-)

Hi David,
Thank you for your message from the UK.
All of your family members must have been happy to have you with them at Christmas.(^^)

Hi everyone,
Here are some my reflections on 2008.
I can say that I've learned English harder than ever before this year. I think I was not a regular member of this blog before,I sometimes didn't appeared for a while ,but lately I send my comment regularly.
Joining the chat event was my first experience of chatting on the Internet and it was a lot of fun!
I was really amazed how the Internet was great.

I'd like to appreciate David and all the members of this blog. (←I think there is no exact equivalant in English.)

Hi Tomo,
I'm looking forward to your secret event.

Hi David and everyone,

Did you have a nice Christmas? I had a party with my friends, and I ate too much! This weekend, I have a year-end party with my friends, so I might eat too much again... Oh...where my resolution of diet had gone?

Here is my review of 2008.

This year, I have lots of concerts. At one of them, I sang a song which was very difficult for me. I have been wanting to sing that song for a long time, but it was too difficult for me, so I couldn't sing it. This year, my teacher said "Try to sing that song. I think you have the ability to sing it now." I was very happy when I heard it, but at the same time, I was worry because I was not sure if I could sing it well. But I could sing it well! I know my performance was not perfect, but it was best performance which I could do now.
As member said, we had two chat events. I have never joined chat, so it was my first experience to do it. It was very exciting!

Thanks David and all the members of this blog. I could keep to learn English. I want to learn it with you next year, too. Best wishes for a happy new year!

Anne, have a nice trip!

Tomo, I'm looking forward to hearing your secret event.

Hi everyone,

Here's the Japanese version of my review of 2008.

Tomo

PS Q chan&Amica-David

Hi David & Everyone,

We had rainy Christmas here. And then it's been snowing for two days and we have more than 40cm snow! I'm relieved that it's a holiday for me today and tomorrow as well. It's cold!

David, it's so good to know that you had a wonderful Christmas with your family. 12 years! It's really long!

My reflections on 2008:

My 2008 has been going on as usual and nothing special, I thought at first. But I rememberd that I studied for a bookkeeping test very hard this spring. I hadn't done something so hard, so I was really happy to passed it.
After that, I thought if I studied English so hard, my English would have been much better...(^^;) Anyway, I have kept posting in this blog, as it's one of my resolutions for 2008.
Thank you for everything, David and all blog members!
I could continue to be here with you, even though I came near to give up. Thanks again to you all! I'm so happy to be one of this blog members.
As some members said, chatting on the internet was so excited and really fun! I hadn't thought that I wouldn't have a chance to join it.

Anne, have a good trip!

Tomo, I'm also looking forward to your "secret plan"!;-)

☆ May 2009 be happy and grear year for you all! ☆

Maki

David and everyone,

David, thanks for your message from the Uk. Wow, you didn't meet your family for a long time, 12 years! I hope a little more short next time, I think.

Well, I will start to write my reflections on 2008.
My best 1 is becoming member one of this blog site and know study-group members. Amazingly, there were a lot of usuful and helpful ideas in this blog.
I accidentally found this on January this year, and I could continue be here happily. Thanks for David and all members.
A snail makes slow progress, you know, I'm nearing their action time. I'm going to make more comments next year timely and eagerly.

I did support mental disable boys and girls as member of supporting organization. They are out-going, indoor play. On December 23, I went viewing of Christmas ilumination in Odaiba with them. It was really fantastic and great. I saw 50 year's Tokyo tower behind rainbow bridge.

I went driving to the unknown places with my husband, and I was excited and happy. I would like to go abroad next year, even short time.

To tell a personal reflection, I was healthy this
year, so that I thanks for my each physical parts of my body. However, I overate myself, so I should do weight control next year. My ideal weight is 51 kilos, but my real weight is big over. Anyway, I could exercise constantly, and I had not a cold still now.

Wishing you all a Happy New Year!

See you next year,

Kiyoko

Hi David and everyone,

I'm back from Wakayama today. I had a great time there; I saw a rainbow in a big waterfall, and also saw a sunrise above the horizon! I enjoyed different styles of Onsen, and one of them was Roten-buro just beside the sea. Soaking in a bath with the view and the sound of the sea was really nice and relaxing.

By the way, I've never imagined that I experienced chatting on the web at my age, and it was so lively and fun.
Tomo,I am also curious to know your 'secret plan'.
Maki, I got the book "Skipping Christmas" today^^)

Hi David and everyone,

My 2008?

I've got a computer of my own and a broadband access for the first time, which enabled me to join this blog in my house. I'm really happy.

And I also bought two computers for my wife and my mother. We will need to connect to each other through the Internet because I'm supposed to work in USA next year. I have to leave my family because of my kids' education. I'll be living there alone for at least two years.

So I've been trying to spend as much time as possible with my family.

Hope you all have a wonderful new year.

Appoh

Hi everyone,

Are you having busy days? We have only one day left this year and see New Year in.
I bought a lottery ticket the other day for the first time in my life. I don't know why I was in a mood to buy them. To be honest, I haven't been interested in it that much, and don't know much about it. Anyway, when I win (not' will win '!!) the lottery, what should I do? I could travel abroad, and buy luxury things.... OK. I will have a dream for some time. Have you ever bought a lottery ticket?

Hi Appoh,
Are you going to USA next year? Staying there alone must be tough and lonely for both you and your family. I hope everything goes well with you.

Anne,

Hi Appoh,

Are you going to work in USA next year? Actually, my father used to work in the US for about 5 years when I was a child, and he was living there by himself. We couldn't go with him because of my grandmother's ill. I hope you will be able to come back soon.

Have a great holiday with your family!

Hi everyone,

Happy birthday Anne. I hope you had a wonderful day. It is very cold in the UK right now. When I woke up this morning, the temperature was minus eight degrees. Even now (the afternoon) all the fields and trees are white because they are covered with frost.

Later this afternoon, I am going up to the next village to visit a school friend, and after that, I'm going to say hello to a farmer I used to work for. Tonight, I am going to climb a mountain near our house and sit on the top at midnight. It will give me time to think about what I did in 2008 and make some plans for 2009.

Anyway, I hope you are enjoying the holidays, and Happy New Year to everyone (nine hours earlier for you than for me!) See you in 2009.

PS. Thanks for your words!

I'm going to a shrine nearby my house today and have a relaxing time at home with my family.

Hi Kazu,

Welcome to the blog! I'm glad to hear that you found this blog through my blog. Of course you can join us! Taking part this blog is a really good and effective way to learn English. We have a wonderful teacher(David) and teammates who can help each other, and they always motivate me to study more. Writing in English is difficult, but I'm sure you'll learn much more this way than just by reading. As David said, I also hope this community will grow even bigger and stronger this year, so I'm(we are all) happy to have you with us, and hope you will be one of the regulars.

Look forward to reading your next comment!

Tomo

Hi Kazu,

Welcome to this blog! So nice to have you with us here. Let's learn English together. Please don't hesitate to post your comment both in English and in Japanese!

Everyone,

Have a lovely day!

Maki

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!!

Just I want to say "have a happy new year"!!
See you soon, Alice

Hi Alice,

Happy new year, and good luck on your exam! I'm looking forward to having you back here;-)

Thank you for your kindness response, Tomo and Maki.
I'm glad to hear that.
This kind of my emotion is first time in for a long time.
I'm excited.
Because I used to do chatting on the P.C.
We called it (パソコン通信)
It reminds me of the time when I was chatting with people who are taking part in some site.

Kazu

Hi Kazu,
I would say..

・I felt this way for the first time in a long time.
・It's been a long time since I had this feeling last time.

By the way, you used to chat on the Internet? You must be good at using computers!(I have my blog, but I'm not good with computers..)

Hi everyone,
I visited a shrine near my house with my family today, and I did omikuji. I got 大吉 for the past two years(2007 and 2008), but I got 中吉 this year. 中吉 is not bad, but I wanted to get 大吉 this year too.(the third year in a row!) Anyway, the paper fortune said, “学問: 雑念を捨て、早々に目標を達成すべし”.

I'm going to an onsen near Mt. Fuji with my mother, my sister and her family, and my family tomorrow.

Hope you are all enjoying your New Year break.

See you soon,

Tomo

PS David, are you enjoying shopping?

I'm glad to see your response.
You seem to be having fun with your family and I can imagine that you have to take care of your children.
It isn't forcing but you seem to be having fun.
I know your funny story last year. You told it on your blog.
When I read it, I felt.......(微笑ましく思いました。)

By the way, Thank you for your advice to my English.
I got it, and I put it to my computer data base.
It was worth for me.
Speaking of a computer, I started it about 13 years ago.
At that time, I used to use a Macintosh computer, but I was not so good at it.
Still now I'm not good at it more than English skill.
It's joke.(笑)
Even English skill, it is bad actually.

I have my blog too.
If you like visit my blog anytime.

Have fun with your family visiting Mt.Fuji.

P.S

I tend to think about one way when I write here in English.
you might think that I doesn't care about another people.
But it is wrong if you think so.
It's because of lack of my English.

Hi Kazu,

Welcome to the blog! You live in Tochigi Prefecture? It's far away from my area, Aichi , but we can talk here on this blog. It's really convenient days today, isn't it?
It takes much time to write your feelings in English, so I sometimes feel like giving up on everything^^;)
Anyway, Have fun together!

Hi Alice,

A Happy New Year!
Take good care not to catch a cold and good luck.
Looking forward to hearing from you again.

Hi David and everyone,

I went to a shrine nearby my house yesterday as I mentioned before. It's one of the customs of my family visiting there on the first day of the year. It's really nice exchanging greetings like," A happy New Year" and other things with neighbors. At the shrine, we get " Ofuda" and place it at our family alter every year. I'm going to "Atsuta shrine" or "Ise shrine" tomorrow; two shrines during New Year's holidays! I feel I AM Japanese.
I've not gotten " omikuzi" these couple of years, so I'd love to do it tomorrow. It's been a while since I got " 大吉 おみくじ”last time.

Bye for now,

Anne

Hi team,
It's a lovely day! I'm on my way to Mt. Fuji in the car with my family, so I'm writing this comment from my cell phone. We are going to Lake Kawaguchi today. It's colder there than where I live, but I think it is much warmer than where David and Maki are.

Kazu, I had a look at your blog last night. You have your blog on the same site(Cocolog) as me! Did you read my last entry? I can tell you the story as a funny story now, but on that day, I was like, “Oh, my God!”(笑) Anyway, thanks for reading.
By the way, I don't think you are the person who doesn't care for other people, so don't worry about that;-)

Have a nice day, everyone! See you soon.

Tomo

I made a mistake about where we were going. It's not Lake Kawaguchi but Lake Yamanaka. We had lunch there, and we took a drive around the lake. We are going to visit Sengen shrine now. Anne, I am Japanese, too! By the way, I've been to Ise shrine.(It's about 6 years ago.)

Hi Anne,

Thank you for your response,I'm glad to hear that.
Thanks to internet, we can communicate with people who are living in anywhere.
It is nice for us, isn't it?
You live in Aichi prefecture,it is far away, isn't it?

As you said, it is difficult to write in English in order to explain my emotions and situation.
On the other hand, it is useful to improve my English skill.
I don't like studying but I like playing with everyone and talking.
Especially, I like to speak English with anyone else, Of course.
So, in a spirit of a child, I'll have fun with everyone.\(^_^)/

Hi every one.
By the way,let me introduce myself a little bit more about my history of English.
Actually, I didn't like studying English since I was a student.
More or less... I didn't like it.
In spite of that, I started to learn English.
I couldn't believe myself.
It was the turning point of my life.
Once I started it, it was fun for me and I found some books written by English.
I didn't know that learning English was so fun.
Needless to say, I was addicted to learn English.
I watched the English program of T.V for 1 year.
But I couldn't tell myself whether I can speak English or not.
So I entered to NOVA.
As you know NOVA has been bankrupted.
This is going to be a long story, so I'll avoid this topic.(^_^;)

Since then I've been learning English as you know.
Every one has turning point on their life.
It was the time to change on my life.

If you like, please let me hear your turning point of your life about English. m(_ _)m

Hi David and everyone,

A Happy New Year!
Tomorrow, most of Japanese people will return to their normal life. Did you have a nice holiday? I enjoyed my holiday, but I ate too much! I must go on a diet! (I know I'm saying it everyday.--;) Today I went to do "岩盤浴" in a public bath with my friend. We stayed there for 4 hours! We sweated a lot at the "岩盤浴", after that, we had an leisurely open-air bath, so we felt refreshed.

Hi Kazu,

Welcome to this blog! Let's enjoy learning English! When I was a student, I didn't like English, and I was not good at it. Now I'm still not good at English, but I think that my English ability have been making progress by little and little since I joined in this blog. (When I came here, my English was very poor!) The reason I started to learn English again was that I wanted to be able to write in English to exchange e-mails with my friend who were foreigner. So I decided to join in this blog. That was my turning point of my life. I got lots of friends who learn English here. I couldn't keep on learning English without their help and encouragement.

久しぶりに英語を書いたら疲れました…^^;

Amica

Hi everyone,

Happy New Year!

By the way, you've probably got lots of new year greeting cards. Mostly they start by some set phrases like '謹賀新年' or '明けましておめでとう' which could translate to 'Happy New Year'.

But the most impressing phrase I received this year is '春風献上' which could be 'I'll send you a spring breeze(?)'. I was not familiar with this. What unusual greeting phrases would you be most interested in ?

Hi Kazu,

Welcome to this community! I took a look at your blog. I guess we're in the same generation. Hope you'll have a great time here.

Appoh

Hi Amica,

Thank you for your response and I've found the things that was same as I do.
Actually I'm on a diet,but during this holiday, I've got weight.(^_^;)
I'm going to keep it learning English and losing weight.
Let's have fun with everyone.

Hi Alice,

Happy New Year!
So nice to find your commnet. Good luck!
Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Hi Anne,

I went to a shrine in my town and "Zenkouji Temple" on 1st! I feel I AM Japanese, too. (^^;)
How was your "Omikuji"?

Hi Appoh,

"春風献上" is very interesting and unique! I like the sense. I haven't had such a unusual card. 残念。。

Hi Tomo,

How was the day trip for Lake Yamanaka? You must have a lovely time with your family. And food is also good? The weather is nice, isn't it? ;-)

Hi Amica,

I haven't tried 岩盤浴 yet. You stayed there for 4 hours?! How many times did you take 岩盤浴? I hear that you can stay on it for 15min. or so at one time.
Right? Anyway, it sounds you had a good time!

By for now,

Maki

Hi Appoh,

'春風献上' 、面白い表現ですね。

Hi Maki,

書き方が悪かったですね^^;

Hi everyone,

I went to Ise Zingu today, and I got "omikuzi."
Lucky me! It was 'daikichi', and I feel good now.

Coincidentally, Prime minister Aso visited there and I saw him and other ministers. There were a lot of police officers and security officers.

Hi Amica,

Speak to you soon,

Anne

Hi everyone.

This site seem to be crowded.
We are sure that the owner David would be feeling good, aren't we?
And I'm looking forward to meeting him on this site.
Because I haven't greeting yet to him.
He will be back here tomorrow, won't he?

By the way,Hi, Appoh.
What should I call you?
I'm glad to hear that we are same generation.
Let's have fun in this site with each other.

Hi, Tomo.
You must be tired for now.
Please take care of yourself.
We are running a blog on same site.
That's why I found your blog.
I'm looking forward to seeing your blog from now.

See you soon.

Hi everyone,
As you all know, David will be back to Japan today!
David, how was your holiday in Wales? I hope you had a wonderful time with your family, and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Hi Kazu,
My turning point in my English study is definitely when I found this blog by chance.(It's about two and a half years ago.) Before I joined this blog, I always believed that there was 'best way' to study English and only people who found it could be good English speakers, but I was totally wrong. David taught us that there was no 'best way' to study. He said that there was only one way to learn English, and that was to study a lot and practice all the time. It was hard for me to accept this idea at first because I had to give up looking for 'the best way', but I have to admit that he was absolutely right.
My second turning point is when David changed the style of this blog. He was writing the blog in Japanese at the beginning, but he changed the way in November in 2006 and started writing the blog in English. To tell the truth, I was not happy when I heard of his new idea because I had no confidence in my English at that time. It was difficult for me to read the blog and write comments in English, but I tried hard(I had to try my best every time I read and wrote in English here.) It was really difficult, and sometimes I had to give up things I wanted to say, but it was worth trying. It worked for me, and now I'm really grateful to his new idea. If he had been writing the blog in Japanese, I wouldn't have improved my English.

By the way, I asked Appoh the same question as you, and he said, “Please call me just アッポー.”

Hi Amica,
Glad to hear that you had a great time at the ganbanyoku. I want to try it sometime!

Hi Appoh,
I loved this expression ‘春風献上’. That sounds nice!

Hi Maki,
Yes, I had a lovely time at the lake and the onsen. We had ほうとう for lunch there. It was the first time I had had ほうとう, but it was good!

Hi Anne,
You got daikichi? Lucky you! I'm sure a lot of good things happen to you this year;-)

Talk to you soon,

Tomo

Hi everyone,

HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!

Everyone seemed to have a nice vacation.
So did I. I met my old friends who came back from
other prefectures. We enjoyed chatting ,chatting
and chatting ,and I felt time past so quickly.

Hi Kazu,
Welcome to this blog!
Let's learn English together here.

Hi Tomo,

Thank you for your great response.
And I envy you.
Because you've improved your English skill in just about 2 years.
I can't believe that. Just only 2 years?
I really,really envy you.

On the other hand.
I have a chance to improve it if I keep writing in this blog here, right?
I wish I could.

I have some question to Tomo.
Have you ever had dream in English?
I just curiously.(^_^;) (ちょっと興味が)
I don't force you, but if you like.

How long I must study hard before I get a confidence about English?
In spite of the fact that I've been learning English for a long time, I can't speak English well.

In any case, I'll keep learning English in here.

Hi Q chan,

Thank you for your response.
As I said, I'll keep learning English in here with everyone.
Let's have fun. \(^_^)/

Hi Kazu,

You can just pronounce Appoh literally as Tomo explained. Thank you Tomo!

Actually, my friends from junior high school still call me Appoh. My first name starts with 'A' and I'm really tall, which means you may say 'Noppo'. Therefore, Appoh consists of A and Noppo. I like it.

Hi everyone,

I guess some members here are writing blogs of your own. I feel I'm going to start my blog when I work in USA this year. However, I'm not good at IT and I don't know about much of the Internet. I was wondering what I should do first. Do I have to pay extra money to a provider ? Where can I find more details on how to begin a blog?

Appoh

Hi Amica,
Thank you for sharing the details about your story! Actually, I understood what you meant. I was just curious how many times you took 岩盤浴 for 4 hours. It's difficult also for me to take a sauna, but I'd like to try 岩盤浴! Both are totally different, right?

Hi Anne,
You got "daikichi"?! Wow! A lot of happiness come to you!

Hi Tomo,
I've heard the name "ほうとう", but I don't know what it is. What is it like? Is it 鍋?
It was so good that you enjoyed everything!

Hi Q chan,

Maki

Hi Kazu,
Of course you can be in the same place as me if you keep studying and practicing. I think you can get there sooner than I did because your English is much better than the English I had when I joined this blog.
As for your question, unfortunately, I haven't had a dream in English, but I've dreamed of me speaking English very fluently before. I hope the dream will come true soon!
How long do you have to study until you become confident in your English? It's a difficult question because I'm still trying to build my confidence.^^;)

Hi Appoh,
You are welcome. Thanks for telling us the story about your name. It's your real nick name, is it? 'Appoh' and 'Noppo', it's interesting. By the way, are you thinking of having your own blog? That's a good idea! I think you can have your blog for free.(I also have my blog for free.) I have it on one of the blog sites called ‘Cocolog’ which is provided by Nifty, but actually, it's not my Internet provider. Before I started my blog, I thought I had to learn about HTML codes, but I was wrong. Writing a blog is easy. If you can write an e-mail, you can write a blog as well. I think there are a lot of sites(providers?) offering blog service for free, like Yahoo, Rakuten, FC2, and etc.. Have a look at their homepages, and you can start your blog from today!

Hi Q chan,

Hi Maki,

See you all soon,

Tomo

Tomo,

Maki

Hi,Appoh,

Thank you for your response.

"Appoh consists of A and Noppo"
I see, that's what this is all about.(なるほど、そういうことなんだ)
I couldn't imagine that your name is from where.
But now, I'm sure of that.

By the way.
Speaking of name, you might know that My name is difference, between this blog and my own blog.
Actually, I've been naming myself as "やったもん" for a long time.
But in this site, let me call it as Kazu.
As if different person I want to change myself.
Yes, we can.(^_^;)
As if It's like a turning point of my life.
I can change,I can change into the person who are able to speak English well in here.
This is my new years resolution.(今年の抱負)

Hi tomo,

As I said, I'm going to change myself.
Thank you for your encouragement.

Kazu

皆様、はじめまして、and Happy New Year!
