The shop assistant sewed the sweater for you? She is very nice! I admit that she is nicer than service people in Japan who are just following the manual. I can't imagine that happening in Japan unless you are a regular customer. I understand your point.
I have a question for you. Which one do you prefer when you go shopping?

1) You can have a real connection with the people in a shop, but many of them are really rude.

2) You can not have a real connection with the people in a shop, but most of them are kind.

Me? I prefer No 2, but I'd love to have a mix of 1 and 2 - you can have a real connection with the people in a shop, and most of them are very nice!(but you have only two choices. Which one?)

In Japan, like the girl who completely ignored you could be fired if a lot of customers complain about her to the shop manager.

I'm trying to remember some stories about getting really good service, but.. I usually get good service wherever in Japan, but really good service.., hmm, I can't think of anything at the moment. It's sad..

I also think it's a very nice thing that people talk to each other like your country, but I always find it difficult to talk to people who I don't know in my real life. You know, it's unusual for Japanese people to talk to people who they don't know when they see each other at a shop or a restaurant, or on a bus or a train. If everyone does it, and if anyone doesn't think that I'm strange, I could do it, but it's really difficult for me to do it in Japan. I sometimes talk to people who I don't know when I'm going for a walk or playing outside with my children. When I'm outside with my children, sometimes people(especially elderly people or mothers like me) talk to me, and I enjoy the conversation with them even if we are complete strangers.
By the way, I just said, “If everyone does it”, and it reminded me of the joke someone(maybe Anne?) told us before. Oh no, I'm a typical Japanese! I love being Japanese, but sometimes I feel like to be another person. Maybe it could be one of my New Year's resolutions: meet a lot of new people and not to be afraid to talk to them.

Hi David,
The service you got in the UK was really nice, and I think you are very lucky because
these things couldn’t happen both in the UK and in Japan unless you are a regular customer. I understand what you meant well; good service makes you happy.
In Japan, I usually don’t feel bad wherever I go shopping, stay at hotels or other places.
Talking of “ Really good service”, I’m not sure it was a really good service or just a kindness, but I got such kind of service when I stayed at a hotel in London last fall.
I stayed at the hotel totally five nights; I arrived at the hotel in the evening from Heathrow airport, and I noticed that I didn’t prepare an adapter properly working for the UK at the next morning. I was a bit panicked because I have to move to Cambridge soon, so I asked a waiter where I could get it when I had a breakfast . He told me the name of the shop and drew a map, and I got it. Two weeks later, I came back to the same hotel, and at the next morning, he spoke to me,” Welcome back! Did you enjoy the stay in Cambridge?” I was glad that he remembered me and spoke to me again. While I was there, I felt good, and maybe he was kind because I looked so helpless. It might be usual things for him , and just one of kindness, but I was very happy while I was staying there.

And one more thing I noticed in the UK, people talked to others, and enjoyed conversations even though they didn’t know each other as David said.
I was surprised when I was spoken to a businessman in the elevator starting from,”good morning”, and he asked me about economics in Japan after a while! Who imagined you were asked about economics in the elevator in Japan!! Actually, I enjoyed taking with him for a while^^)
Tomo’s question is interesting. If I have to choose one, I prefer No.2 because I can’t put up with rude manners.

Again, about “thrilled,” David, thanks for your advice.
Actually, after posting my comment last night , I came across the word” thrilled” in a book “Skipping Christmas” that I’m reading now, and I was sooo glad to find out the word!
It is the story about the couple who have decided to skip Christmas this year and brought a lot of troubles or chaos to a town. The couple(Luther and Nora) went to see a movie, but despite the crowds, the cinema was deserted. [ This thrilled Luther when he realized that everybody else was out there shopping.] It’s a kind of wave of emotion and excitement, right? Now I got it!

そのお店の人はセーターを直してくれたんですか？　とっても親切ですね！　その人は、ただマニュアルだけに従う日本のサービス業の人より素敵だと思います。　日本だったら、常連さんじゃない限り、そんなことはないですよね。　Davidの言いたいことはよく分かります。
1つ質問なのですが、買い物に行くとしたら、どっちがいいですか？

1)　お店の人とちゃんと(人間らしい）関わりが持てるけど、多くの人の対応はとても悪い

2)　お店の人と人間らしい関わりは持てないけど、ほとんどの人の対応は親切

私は、２の方がいいです。　でも、１と２の両方がミックスされたサービス－‘人間らしい関わりが持てて、ほとんどの人がとても親切！’－の方がもっといいですね。（あ、でも選択肢は2つですよ。　どっちがいいですか？)

日本だと、Davidが会ったような、お客さんを完全に無視するような接客態度の従業員は、苦情がたくさん来て、クビになるかも。。

何かすごくいいサービスの体験はなかったかなぁ・・と考えているのですが・・。　日本だと、大抵どこでもいいサービスだけど、う～ん、でも‘本当にいいサービス’と思うと、今のところ思いつかないです。　悲しいなぁ・・（涙）

私も、Davidの国みたいに‘みんなが誰とでも話す’っていうのはすごくいいなぁ～と思います。　でも日常だと、私は知らない人に話しかけるのってなかなかできないです。　日本だと、みんなお店やレストラン、バスや電車で会った知らない人に話しかけたりしないですよね。　もしみんながそうで、誰も私を‘変な人’って思わないんだったらできるかな。。　でも日本だとすごく難しいです。
子供と一緒に散歩に行ったり、外で遊んでいたりすると、知らない人と話す機会もあります。　子供と外にいると、知らない人でも話しかけてくれたりするので（特に年配の方とか、私と同じ子供がいる人とか）。　そういう時は全然知らない通りすがりの人とでも楽しく話せるのですが。。
ところで、私、さっき『もしみんながそうなら』って言いましたね。　前に誰かが（たぶんAnneだったかな？）教えてくれたジョークを思い出しました。　・・はぁ～、私ってほんとに日本人だな～（笑）
まぁ、日本人であることは好きですが、時々、変われたらな・・と思います。　これは今年の抱負の1つになるかもですね。　「新しい人とたくさん出会って、人に話しかけることをためらわないこと」

In that case I felt bad.
On the other hand, some shop assistant keep window open until I'm gone.
In that case I felt good.
Different thing is whether they keep window open or not for a while.
put some little effort makes a big different.

新しい人がたくさん参加してくれたので(Thank you!)、このブログについていくつか知っておいてもらいたいな、と思うことを書きます。

Davidは大体月曜日と金曜日にブログを更新します。（ブログはボランティアなので、本当の仕事が忙しい時などは変わります）　月曜日に新しいトピックをくれて、私たちはそれについて自分の意見を書いたりするのですが、1週間トピックは同じです。（だからKazu、心配しなくても大丈夫。　考える時間はたっぷりありますよ＾＾）　それから、Davidは前のエントリーは読まないので、コメントがトピックからずれていても、前のエントリーの話でも、一番新しいエントリーにコメントして下さい。（私たちもいつもそうしています。　じゃないと、せっかくコメントをもらっても気が付かないことがあるので）　全然違う話をしても大丈夫です。　私たちもよくトピックから横道にずれた話をしているし、自分の日常について書いたりもします。

Davidのエントリーで分からない所があったら、コメントで質問して下さい。　私を含め、他のみんながお手伝いできます。（私もエントリーの翻訳をがんばりますが、間違っていたら助けてくださいね～。　月曜日にブログが更新されたら、水曜日くらいに訳を載せたいと思っています。　他にやってみたい人がいたらいつでも言って下さい）

It’s hard to get this kind of jokes if you are not aware of those stereo types…
BTW, since you mentioned it was hard to explain your experiences at drive-through. I’m going to try to rewrite it. (Corrections are welcome, everyone!)

“I often use drive-through in the morning. Some shop attendants shut the window as soon as I get my order even before I leave. That makes me feel bad (or unappreciated?). On the other hand, some keep it open until I drive off. That makes me feel good. The only differences are keeping the window open just a little longer or not. I think this is a good example of just a small effort can make people feel better.”

「朝、ドライブ・スルーを良く利用します。("たまに”の意味ならsometimesの方が良いかも)オーダーした物を受け取った後、私が去る前にさっさと窓を閉めてしまう店員がいます。これには気分を悪くします。(感謝されてないような気がしますの方が良いかな？)反対に私が去るまで窓を開けておく店員もいます。これは気分を良くします。違いは単に窓をほんの少し長く開けているか否かです。ほんの少しの努力(心遣い)が人を良い気分にさせると言う良い例だと思います。」(まさに「訳文」みたいになっちゃった。笑)

It's a nice story.

読んでいるときは、Davidのnew entory を心待ちにしていましたが、自分もコメントを書くと思うと緊張します。

David,イギリスでDavidが受けたサービスは素敵だけど、イギリスでも、日本でも、常連客でない限り、そうしたことはあまりありえないことだから、あなたは、とってもラッキーだったと思いますよ。
おっしゃる事は、よーく分かります。ーーいいサービスって言うのは人を幸せにしますよね。
日本にいて、私は、買い物に行っても、ホテルや他の場所に滞在しても、気分を害する、ということは、あまりありません。
「本当に良い、素敵なサービスは?」と言えば、それが、いいサービスだったのか、ただの親切と言えば良いのかよく分からないのだけど、昨年の秋ロンドンのホテルに滞在した際、そうした思いをしました。
ホテルには、合計で５泊しました。ヒースロー空港から夕方ホテルについて、翌朝きちんとイギリスで使えるアダプターを用意していなかった事に気づいたんです。その日に、すぐにケンブリッジに向かわなくてはいけなかったので、少しだけ、あわてました。そこで、（ダイニングで）朝食をとった時に、サービスの人に、「どこでそうしたアダプターを買えるのか」］尋ねました。彼は、店の名前を教えてくれて、地図も書いてくれたので、無事アダプターを買うことができたんです。２週間後、同じホテルにケンブリッジから戻ってきて、翌朝、朝食の時、その彼が、近づいてきて、「お帰りなさい。ケンブリッジでの生活はいかがでしたか?」と、話しかけてくれたんです。彼が、私のことを覚えていて、話しかけてくれて、私はうれしく思いました。ロンドンに滞在している間、私は気分よく過ごせたんです。これは、私が、頼りなさげに見えたから、親切にしてくれただけかもしれませんね。こんなこと、彼にとっては当たり前のいつものことで、ただの親切のうちのひとつにすぎないかもしれませんが、ロンドンに滞在している間、私は、とても幸せだったんです。
そして、もうひとつ、イギリスで気がついたことといえば、Davidがいうように、人々が、見知らぬ人にも話しかけて、会話を楽しむ、と言う事です。

再び、"Thrilled"について。David,アドバイスをありがとう。
実は、昨夜、私のコメントを投稿したあとで、私が今読んでいる"Skipping Cristmas"の本の中で、この単語に出合ったんです。この単語を見つけて、私はものすごーーーくうれしかったんです。この本は、今年はクリスマスに関する様々な行事をやめてしまおう、と決心した夫婦と、そのことが町に様々なトラブルや、混乱をもたらす、と言う話です。LutherとNoraの夫婦はクリスマスに近いある日、映画を見にいったんですが、人々でごった返しているのに、映画館はガラーンとしている。[ルーサーは他の誰もがショッピングのために町に出ているんだ、と、気がついて、その事に胸高鳴り、こみ上げてくるものがあった。]
Thrilledはほとばしるような気持ち、興奮した気持ち、の表れの事ですよね。今、その感じがつかめた気がします。

Hi David and everyone,

Long time no see since last comment at after Christmas.
I have just wanted to say 'Happy New Year' to everyone.
However, I stayed my daughter's house long time, and I didn't use English at all, besides there was not an air of English in there. My grandsons, their mood were extremely cheerful and fantastic, so time had flied speedy like a story of Urashima-Tro.

As soon as I came back my home, I started reading David's a bad experience at the airport, and regulars New Year's greetings(beautiful art!!) and resolutions.
To say honest, I'm going to get my own anniversary on this Friday. It is the first day of my blog. At the time, I was at beginner at PC, and also I'm not good at English. Besides, I'm a bit late to begin the computer.
Then I consciously thought my life style have to change and practice with using this blog site. Though I often took long abcent, and also my mind sometimes depressed, deeply.
Even that time, David's entry and many relularly member's comments chareed me and stopped my give up.
Continuing is the best way for me, even slowly, I really really think now.

After came home, my PC took trables, one of them is mail setting system was changed to protect the spam. I did its oparating on my PC according to server's guide, but my mail soft didn't work well, so I had have been continuing it while three days. However, I can not send a reply to messager and also open attchment.

While I'm leaving to commenting for long time, new blogers gathered on this site.

Welcome and nice to meet you, Choco and Kazu and Yumeya and amo and Tao and Mary...sorry, I don't remember more.

I will do my best to reading David's entry, studying English and continuing commenting , these are my New Year's resolutions.

Amo - Nice to have you back! I think you should change the words ‘once in a while’ to ‘once a week’, which means you are going to comment on every topic!(Just joking, but it's my hope;-)) Anyway, look forward to reading your next comment.

ところで1つ聞きたいのですが、‘Sure enough’（思った通り、案の定）←この表現を日本語の‘やっぱり’という場面で使ってます？　日本語の「やっぱり」はとても便利なのですが、英語に訳しづらい表現でもあります。　状況によっていろいろ変わるし、1つの意味を当てはめていつも同じ表現を使うとちょっと変に聞こえたりします。　日本語の「やっぱり」はいろいろな意味がありますよね。

・思った通り　Just as I thought
・あなたの言う通り　as you say/said
・（そうなると）知っていた　I knew it/ I knew...
・（いろいろあったけど）結局　after all　などです。

他にも英語には訳せない「やっぱり」もあると思います。（もし私が勘違いしてたらごめんなさい。　その場合は聞き流してくださいね）

I make it a rule to use the word as much as possible when I got it as new words.
(新しい単語を覚えた時はできるだけそれを使うことにしているんです。）
So it was not natural.

Hi everyone,

About great service.
About 10 years ago, I went to Korea with my friend. We stayed at a hotel for 4 days. The hotel had a concierge who was a man. Maybe he was in his late forties, and he could speak Japanese very well. The first day, we were reading a guidebook at the hotel lobby. The concierge came to us, and he asked us "Do you have a place you want to go?" We said "We want to do 垢すり, but we don't know which shop is best, so we can't choose it!" Then, he said "I have a shop I recommend. If you want to go there, I will make a reservation for you" Of course we said yes. He did it, after that he taught us how to take a subway. （切符の買い方が日本とは違うんです）We could take a subway without confusion, and we enjoyed doing 垢すり. During we stayed at the hotel, he spoke to us everyday. He said "Good morning! Where do you go today?", and "Welcome back! How was today? Did you enjoy?" So, every night we told him what we did on that day. The last day, he said "I want to take you to a Yakiniku restaurant tonight." To tell the truth, we were at a loss a little whether to go or not, but we were sure he was a very kind man, so we decided to go with him. He took us to the restaurant which was near the hotel we stayed. The restaurant was small, but the food was very good, and that was his treat. He said "As you know, some Korean have a bad impression of Japanese because of war. But I love Japan and Japanese, so even if some Korean were rude to you, please don't come to dislike Korea, and please come to Korea again." We said "We never met Korean who were rude to us. On the contrary, all of the Korean we met were very kind! We want to come here again!" When he heard it, he looked very pleased. At that time, we didn't have PC, so after that we couldn't contact with him. Actually, I forget his name, but I remember his kindness. I think his service was great.

Here's my translation of the entry.

『金曜日にブログを更新できなくてごめんね。　でも、2月までにあと3冊の本を出版できるようにしないといけないから、今すごく忙しいんだ。

去年、「いいサービス」というトピックについて話したよね。　だから、この間イギリスに戻った時のことを話したいんだ。

イギリスに戻って最初に感じた大きな違いは、お店の人が機械みたいじゃなくて、‘人間らしい’ってこと。　ある意味、これは良くないんだよね。　多くの人がすごく失礼だから。　例えば、あるお店では、女性店員が私の対応をしながら隣の友達としゃべっていて、お金を払う時まで私のことを完全に無視していた。　実は今、イギリスでは誰も現金を使わないから、買い物の仕方が全然違うんだ。　ほとんどの買い物は小額でもデビットカードが使われる。　何かを買うと、店員はただ機械を渡すだけで、買い物をした人は、その機械にカードを入れて、暗証番号を入力して待つ。　数秒後、「カードをお取り下さい」って表示されたら(言われたら)、それで完了。　だからお店の人は、洋服からセキュリティータグを外して袋に入れる以外、本当に何もしないんだ。

でもね、たまにはすごくいい店員がいるんだよ。　あるお店で、とても気に入ったセーターを買ったんだけど、家に持ち帰って2日間着たら、袖がほつれているのに気づいたんだ。　それでお店に持って行ったんだけど、同じセーターはもう全部売り切れで交換できないって言われた。　その女性店員に「返金しましょうか？」って聞かれたんだけど、でもこのセーターはすごく気に入ってたんだって言ったら、「じゃあ、直してみましょうか？　少し裁縫ができるので、もし良ければ、家に持ち帰って直してきます」と言ってくれたんだ。　もちろんこれは彼女の仕事の一環じゃないし、そのお店の会社はそんなこと許可していないと思う。　そう、彼女はただの好意でしてくれたんだ。　3日後（彼女のお休みの日に！）、わざわざセーターをお店に届けてくれて、私に連絡をくれました。　取りに行ってみたら、新品同様だった。　お店に行った時、彼女には会えなかったんだけど、お礼にチョコレートを買って置いてきました。　イギリスでも、まだこんなにいいサービスを受けれるんだって思ったら嬉しかったね。

みんなも何かとてもいいサービスをしてもらったことはありますか？　もしあったら教えてね。

さて、仕事に戻らないと。　じゃあ、またあとでね。

Anne、「辞書に頼りすぎ」という事についてだけど、その通りだね。　辞書には単語の大ざっぱな意味しか載ってないから、その言葉を本当に理解するには、ネイティヴスピーカーがどんな風に使っているのかを勉強しないといけない。（私もそのせいで、いろんな日本語の間違いをしたよ。)　とにかく、‘thrilling’は、こわい話(経験)でも、大体、肯定的な体験を話す時に使われます。

Hi everyone,

I often go to private-management-curry shop and see people who don't have a private space.
What I mean to say is people who don't take care of other people.
When I was eating my favorite foods, some people were closing to me and sat down next to my table.
In spite of the fact that there is many tables in that shop, they did it and began to talking loud.
I couldn't believe that.
That table could be their favorite spot, but if I were them I wouldn't have done that.
I would take the space from others.
I've been thought it is common sense.
But, recently I often see such a people.

And some family came here.
They had a daughter and began to order to owner, after that both of them began to read Manga.
That daughter wanted to talk with her parents.
But they ignored her.
She walked around in that shop,began to scream, and stared to me.
I was embarrassed.(^_^;)　そんなに見つめないで～

I think it was natural for her.
In spite of that, they were reading books.
I couldn't believe that.

I wonder why they can do that, I wanted to say to them that I'm here.
You should take care of others.

This is what I want to vent to someone.

Hi everyone,

As for the topic, what good service is depends on what you expect from it after all. Some people want a real connection with the people in a shop, while others (younger people relatively) don’t care for it as long as their service is prompt and reliable. Or on one occasion you enjoy a friendly conversation with a shop assistant, but on another occasion you might rather feel ‘leave me alone!’. If you ask me, rude shop assistants piss me off, but generally I don’t care so much whether they are very friendly or not. It really depends.

About this week's topic, I think it's a really good service that we don't have to tip at any restaurants in Japan. I'm sure we should make this sysytem spread around the world.

Here's another story.
I take a nightly-bus from Tokyo to my hometown almost every week. I often use the same company. I have to buy tickets online and I always pay at a convenience store. If I pay online, I just pay tickets only. However, I don't want to enter my credit card number, I go to a convenience store to pay although I need to give extra charge.
Anyway, I don't usually need to see any staff of the bus company and I don't have to call them at all.

One day I bought four tickets at a time and I paid four extra charges. I didn't mind it. But I had a phone call from the company. My display showed the phone number that started with 050-, which means from IP phone. No problem. It could cut their phone bills and it could reduce a ticket price. Excellent company.

Then, I answered it. Apparently, it was from a Chinese woman. No problem. I understood what she was saying although she had a strong accent.
First, she said they confirmed I paid. OK, I knew it. I said why you called me,then. It was unusual.

To my surprise, she was worrying I paid too much. She taught me how I could save the extra charges at a convenience store when I bought several tickets at a time.

I think she didn't have to call me. They have nothing to do with the extra charges I paid to the store. It might be a trivial thing but I was really impressed with it. I will never change the bus company.

電話に出ました。すぐに中国人女性だなとわかりました。問題ありませんね。訛っていましたが、言ってることはわかりましたから。最初に、入金を確認しましたと彼女は言いました。そのとおりです。そこで私は、どうして電話してきたんですか？珍しいですね、と話しました。

驚いたことに、彼女は私がお金を払いすぎたと心配して電話をくれたんです。乗車券をまとめ買いした時のコンビニに支払う手数料の節約法を説明してくれました。

彼女は電話する必要はなかったと私は思います。手数料はバス会社には関係ないですからね。取るに足らないことかもしれませんが、私はとても感心しました。決してバス会社を変えることはないでしょう。

Thank you for your comment. I've just finished the setting change of mail-soft. It needed many informations of first contract. Anyway, I'm now relaxing, but my PC still has another troubles and proboems, so that I always feel how should I do it. I'm pushed for my computer by myself.

Kazu, could I point on your sentence? On January 10, 'Maybe you can make a data base with Excel', about 'Maybe' of the beginning of a sentence, 'I think' is better than 'Maybe', I've realized this reading on David's new book at page 233~234.

This is quite same case as Kazu, you have commented after Kazu's commenting, like this. 'Maybe we should do this when we have time so that everyone can keep up'
Could I ask you, how about this case. According to David's book, 'I think or probably' is better than 'maybe', when use it on the beginning of a sentence.
I had never heard.
Anyway, David's new book has a lot of surprises, and I'm amazing every turn over the page.

I'm glad you like the book, but 'maybe' in Kazu and Tomo's sentences is okay. It is okay to use 'maybe' when you are making a suggestion to somebody. Actually, you could use 'I think' in both cases as well, but 'maybe' is not strange here. I'm sorry this is not made clear in the book.

I didn't know that it was possible to say ‘The only differences are..’, so I learned a new expression. Thank you, too!

Your previous entry reminds me of my experience in the UK.
A few years ago, one of my sisters was living in the UK. I visited her with another sister.
During our stay, we planned to go to York by train. My sister reserved seats for the train to York.
I don’t remember what station that we were, but at the station we could not find our train. It made us really nervous so we asked station attendant about the train showing our tickets, he looked at it and looked up the board for a moment and said (actualy I did not remember the conversation with him. but it went like this) “I don’t know but it seems like this train doesn’t exist”. I could not believe my ears and confused so I asked him “Then what shall we do? We cannot go to York?” he said “You should take the train at platform number ~. That train goes to York”
At least we were able to go to York, and we enjoyed our stay in York. But I still cannot believe that the tickets we bought were not available. I think that the situation like this is never happened in Japan.

Me, too! My English skill comes from years of experience, not from studying hard like you & others on this site. So, I have lots of "gray" areas. Thanks for your advice about my English. Actually, I first wrote 'wouldn't have', but I changed it to 'couldn't have' because I wanted to say, “トライできなかったと思う”, not “トライしなかったと思う”. I checked it on Google and saw lots of sentences like that, and I thought it was okay, but I'm not sure about it, so you may be right.
By the way, are you thinking of getting David's new book? That's a good idea! I think it's very useful even for advanced people like you;-)

Seriously now though, I have been deleting those types of comments from day one on my blogs. I can’t stand them, to me it just adds useless junk and filler to my page for no real reason. Nobody gains anything from reading a sentence like that so there is no point of it being there. It does not add any value or any other view points to the discussion.
