The Ant and the Grasshopper

The other day, I was talking to a British friend who has lived in Japan for a long time. He told me about an incident that made him angry. When he was working at a university, a student asked him for help with her homework. Her English teacher (who was Japanese) had given her a story to read called 'The Ant and the Grasshopper'. You may know this story because it is one of Aesop's fables.

The story is about an ant who works hard and a grasshopper who is lazy and spends all his time in the summer having fun. When the winter comes, the grasshopper has no food. He asks the ant for help, but the ant turns him away because he hadn't done any work.

What made my friend angry was that the Japanese teacher had told his students that this story was a good example of the difference between Western and Japanese Culture. He said that in Japan, the ant would never turn the grasshopper away because Japanese people care about each other and are always prepared to help people, whereas Western people are only interested in taking care of themselves. The thing that made my friend angriest was that, in his words, 'It's simply not true that Japanese people help each other!'

Yesterday, I went to the printing company, and on my way back, I saw an interesting situation that tested this point. At a very busy crossing, a car was stopped in the middle of the road with its warning lights flashing. All the drivers around me started changing lanes to go around it. No one stopped to check if the driver was okay. In the UK, I can guarantee that someone would have gone to ask if the driver needed help, but it was clear that no one was going to do that for this driver.

Anyway, I stopped behind the car, and went to find out what was wrong. The driver was a woman, and she said that the engine had just stopped, and she didn't know what to do. Together, we pushed her car to the side of the road so that she could call for help from a safe place. In the time we were pushing the car, no one stopped to ask if we needed help; everyone just continued to drive around and ignore us.

When I got back to my car, I started thinking about my friend's reaction to the fable, and I definitely agreed with him that people tend to be more helpful to those around them in my country than they do in Japan.

So what do you think? Would you have stopped to help the driver? If it was you, would you want someone to stop to help you?

I know the story 'The Ant and the Grasshopper'. I have read this story to my children many times, but I never thought it was a good example of the difference between Western and Japanese Culture.

Well, I think I have to agree with your friend. You know, Japanese people usually don't talk to people they don't know, so I think it's also difficult for them(including me) to help people they don't know. If someone really needs help, like he/she is dying or get seriously injured, I will help them. In that case, I don't care about whether I know them or not. I think(hope!) Japanese people also help each other, but I think they tend to be more helpful to their friends, family members, and people they know. Hmm, I don't know why it's so difficult for us to talk to people we don't know. That's the big difference between Western people and Japanese people. I don't think Japanese people expect much from people who they don't know.

I felt ashamed of myself as reading your story. You stopped behind the car and pushed the car to the side of the road so that the driver could call for help from a safe place. If it was me, of course I would want someone to stop to help me, but I wouldn't have stopped to help the driver. はぁ～・・、最悪ですね。。
You did the right thing, and it's not something we often do.

Hi David,

Of course I know the story 'The Ant and the Grasshopper'. We often talk to children as one of good lessons in our life; it implies a lot of meaning or there are a lot of ways to understand, but I had no idea why the teacher find out such an answer from the story and how stupid he is!

As for the incident what you had yesterday, I don't know about the situation in the UK, but what you said would be partly true; just changing lanes to go around...Actually I had a same experience a few years ago as you had yesterday. When driving, my husband and I noticed a car stopped on the center of the road( but not the busy street), so we did the same thing; pushing the car together, but to be honest, I can't guarantee I would do the same thing if I came across such a situation again. Sometimes 'yes' and sometimes 'no'.
Usually he/she(including me) would think SOME OTHER PERSON would do if he/ she didn't help.At least concerning to these kinds of incidents, people tend not to be helpful. But I want to believe that people are kind enough to help others in our daily life.

By the way if it was me, absolutely I would someone help me!!

How's your weekend? There has been a strong wind blowing in this area since yesterday. It was very hard to use an umbrella, even it was raining last night.

As for your question, I know the story; 'The Ant and the Grasshopper'. I think that it is used for children to teach why you have to do anything sincerely sometimes, but I have no idea why the teacher has such an idea.
I haven't had such an experience before, but when I had a car accident by myself and my car didn't move at all, some people came to me and helped me. Well, as Anne mentioned, most people, including me, have "SOME OTHER PERSON" idea, and honestly say, I'm not sure that I would always help someone in such a situation. Though if it was me, I would want someone to stop to help me! I know that I'm not nice, anyway...
But I want to believe "世の中すてたもんじゃない" feeling!;-)

Hi David,

Thanks for your interesting story.

When I heard your story I felt uncomfortable as a Japanese.
This is not all, but it could be indicated of a part of a Japanese.
In that case, I'm not sure if I would be able to help them.
But as much as I can, I want to help them out as naturally.
I know it is easy to say but doing is difficult.

On the other hand.
There is no point in saying whether he is a Japanese or western.
We have to focus on a personal.
There are some types of person but also not only it.

The time I couldn't speak English, I used to see the one way to see foreigner.
"外人"

Also American, Canadian, and so on.
All together was "外人"
But actually, as time goes by I could communicate with them and found the personality from them.
It is natural.
But I couldn't realize that.
As same as this situation,we tend to think this kind of way.
This is my opinion, but I'm not sure if I could explain that exactly.
Anyway, thank you for your question.

Well, this topic is a kind of 耳の痛い話 for us, isn't it? I think Japanese people have a kind of 'leave me alone' aura and tend to be uninterested in others(who they don't know). Of course, I think there are a lot of kind people in Japan as well, but there are few people who do the same thing as David at a very busy crossing. It's very easy to imagine that everyone changes lanes and continues to drive around. I think we should change in some way.

Anyway, here's my translation of the entry.

『この間、日本にずっと住んでるイギリスの友達と話してたんだけど、腹が立つ出来事があったらしいんだよね。　彼が大学で仕事をしていた時、ある生徒に宿題を手伝って欲しいって頼まれたんだって。　その生徒の英語の先生(日本人)は、「アリとキリギリス」の本を読んでくるように宿題を出したらしいんだけど、イソップ物語の話だから、多分みんな知ってるよね。

働き者のアリと、なまけ者で、夏の間ずっと遊んでいたキリギリスの話。　冬になって、食べ物がなくて、キリギリスがアリに助けてくれるように頼むんだけど、アリは働かなかったのが悪いと、キリギリスを追い払うんだよね。

私の友達が怒ったのは、その日本人の先生が生徒達に、この話は欧米と日本の文化の違いを表すいい例だと言ったこと。　その先生は、「でも日本では、アリはキリギリスを追い払ったりしない。　日本人はお互いを思いやり、いつでも人助けをする用意があるが、これに対して欧米人は、自分のことしか考えていない」と言ったんだって。　これが友達が一番怒ったことなんだけど、「日本人は全然お互いを助け合ったりしてないよ！」と言ってた。

昨日、印刷会社に行ったんだけど、その帰り道で、このことを試すようなおもしろいシチュエーションに出会ったんだ。　交通量の多い交差点で、道路の真ん中にハザードを出して立ち往生している車がいたんだ。　他の車はみんな車線変更して、その車を抜かして行って、誰も運転手が大丈夫かどうか見に行ったりしなかった。　イギリスだったら絶対、助けが要るかどうか誰かが聞きに行ってるね。　でも昨日は、そういう人は一人もいなかった。

とにかく、私はその車の後ろに停車して、事情を聞きに行ったんだ。　運転手は女性で、急にエンジンが停止して、どうしたらいいのか分からないみたいだった。　とりあえず、車を道路の端まで動かして、安全な所から助けを呼べるようにしたんだけど、私とその女性が一緒に車を押している間、誰も手伝おうという人はいなかったね。　みんな無視して、ただ走り去っていくだけだった。

自分の車に戻ってから、友達の話を考え始めたんだけど、彼の意見に全く賛成だね。　イギリス人の方が、日本人よりもっとお互い助け合ってると思う。

みんなはどう思う？　みんなだったら車を停めて運転手を助けた？　もし自分がそういう状況になったら、誰かに助けてもらいたいと思う？

みんなの意見を楽しみにしてるよ』

Hi all,

I don't think the situation David had the other day is not a perfect example to explain whether Japanese people tend to help each others or not, because the driver who got the problem just stayed in her car and didn't get out of her car to ask for a help. I mean she was supposed to do an action to be helped. Warning lights sometimes are used to show an apology or an appreciation in Japan, though I don't know if it is common in other countries. Consequently, some people might have thought that she had intended to stop there and had just felt sorry about that.


I had an car accident in Hokkaido 3 months ago. My car slided on snowy curve road and collided the snow wall. My car and I was perfectly okay except that I couldn't get my car out of it since it went over the curb. Then, the following car stopped behind my car and asked me that I was okay. They tried to help me out pushing my car. But it wouldn't budge. They disappeared without saying anything but after about 5 minutes, they returned with policemen. Although the policeman told me to call a tow car, but I refused and asked them all to push my car. Somehow we succeeded without towing.
I'm not trying to say Japanese people also help each others. What I'm trying to say is that they couldn't help but help me because there were nobody else and my car was obviously in trouble.
Of course I really thank them, but the point I'm saying is that Tokyo is too crowded to feel some obligation to help others because there are many other people around. I don't mean it's a good thing but it's kinda natural occasion wherever it happened.

個人的にも、日本人の方がこういった場合に他人任せの傾向が
比較的強いというふうには感じましたが、それも日本人のシャイな性格とも関係あるのではないかと思います。あと、’空気’というのもありますかね。たとえば、事故にあった人が1人で、周りに3人がいたとした場合、3人の中の1人が助けようとしたら他の二人も協力すると思います。しかし、周りに日本人100人がいたとしたらその中の1人が助けようとしても他の99人は見て見ぬふりをするかも知れませんね。

I've heared about this blog lately. This is nice blog ! I'm happy to meet this place. I'll do my best to write comment in English.
Today's topic is very interesting. In my opinion, most Japanese are kindly and have a gentle heart to help others. But in this case, like David experienced, each Japanese must hesitate to help the driver. Because for most Japanese, it feel uncomfortable that they do diffrent things alone from others or surroundings.
Even if it is right moral.
If some of them went to hlep the driver then, it could be easy for them. (At first someone need to act.) It is not alone, it is good at for Japanese to do group action.
But...it is difficult question. I don't think Japanese only can do in a group. I think it depends on situation.

I often see similar things happen. I sometimes see someone looking sick or in trouble on the street and no one is stopping to help. I feel ashamed every time that happens. I can understand peoples’ reactions because I myself feel afraid of helping. I don’t want to be responsible for someone or some situation I can’t handle. It also reflects the fact that people are afraid of not getting any help from other people. I resent that. I tell myself I’m old enough to handle little situations like those, and try to at least check if they are in serious trouble.

A few months ago in the morning, I saw a woman trying to help an old man lying on the sidewalk. There were some people walking passed, but no one was stopping. The old man looked like he had some kind of handicap, and it was obvious that helping him required more than one middle-aged woman. I was on my way to work, but I couldn’t just ignore it, so I stopped to help. The old man was unsteady on his legs, apparently handicapped and couldn’t speak. The woman was from a community center nearby, so I stayed with him while she went to get some helping hands. She looked relieved when I stopped to talk to her. She must have been at a loss what to do all alone with the man. I felt bad for her, and wished that more people offered help. If they do, more people feel safe to stop to help first, knowing they won’t be left alone.

That was one of educational and bedtime stories in my childhood days. Spirit of the story was likely the woker ant would be better than lazy grasshopper; so you should take any jobs; you should help your parents and brothers; you should study harder.

Anyway, in the past time, Japanese were said "economic animal", "woker bee" but after the bubble economy burst, Japanese nation's will to work have changed, I think.

Again about the last week's entry, I agree with ideas ofZotto's word"見てみぬふり”and Lily's one" I don’t want to be responsible for someone or some situation I can’t handle." That's why I said "sometimes 'yes' and sometimes 'no', I think.
It might be away from the situation at the busy road, it reminded me of the days when my father -in -law was alive; whenever my father-in-law got lost and couldn't find the way to the house, someone stopped to ask if he was OK and took him to a police station. Whenever I got a phone call, I was sooo relieved!

I live near some rehabilitation center, and I sometimes come across the situation that someone need a help, so I try to speak to a person if he/she needs a help or not.
Still, I can't guarantee if I would stop to help someone on the busy street,though.
By the way, the story makes us think in a lot of ways putting aside of the stupid teacher. I took it as hard word and preparation not as helping each other.

David’s entry and everyone’s comments reminded me of ‘mass psychology’ theory. This is a field of psychology to understand the behavior of people in large groups, crowds, and societies. If you were alone with someone in trouble, you would definitely help him/her. But people can behave differently when they are in a group regardless of their wishes. Suppose a man was killed in the presence of a hundred people. You can look on this as ‘despite of the presence of 100 people, the man was killed’. But you can also see this as ‘the man was killed because 100 people were watching’.
