A New Idea

Hi team,

I have had a new idea for the blog, and I wanted to know what you think. These days, I usually do two entries, one on Monday, and one on Friday. Since many of you have said that it is useful to have me correct your English, I was thinking that we could set up a topic on Monday, discuss it through the week, and then I could write some corrections of mistakes that I have noticed. Of course, I can't correct everything, but it might be useful for you if I correct ones that I have noticed a few times.

For example, here are some corrections from this week.

I watched some articles/I watched the web page you recommended.
(We don't use 'watch' for web pages because they don't change or move. Use 'read' or 'look at'.

I don't know your birthday
(I didn't know it was your birthday.)

I should have write that comment on a new topic to be seen by everyone.
(I should have written that comment on the new topic so that everyone could see it.)

She is one of the'Outliers'!
(She is an 'outlier'.)

I don't go there all the way by walking
(I don't walk all the way there. - we don't use 'by' with 'walk'.)

David recommended BBC News Video is rather watching easy than CNN com
(David suggested that watching the BBC is easier than watching CNN.)

What's more, she was remarkable talent speaking English.
(What's more, she had a remarkable talent for speaking English.)

At my birthday
(On my birthday)

However, she is going to Tokyo for her husband's transfer in near days.
(She is moving to Tokyo in the near future because her husband was transferred.)

To say the truth
(To tell the truth)

Let me know what you think of this idea, and also if I have misunderstood any of your sentences.

Have a great weekend,

David

Hi David,
I like your idea! I'm glad if you correct my writings and I am sure that everyone on the blog are glad because your corrections are always helpful for us all.
Of course I understand it's impossible for you to correct everything! Reading what you have corrected is useful for us to improve our English.
*We don't use 'watch' for web pages →I haven't pay attention to this ,so it's good for me to make sure this point.

By the way, can I ask a question?
You corrected the sentence[She is one of the 'Outliers'!]to [She is an 'outlier'].
( I wrote this sentence.) If I meant to focus on "one of", how can I express? I mean, not「彼女はoutlier です」but 「彼女はoutliersは数多くいるけれどもまさしくその中の一人です。」In this case 'She is an outlier 'make sense?

Hi kiyoko,

Yes, I'm a morning person.
Have fun at the sports day with your husband!

Speak to you soon,

Anne

Thank you for your collecting my sentences!

I'm also glad to get them. I don't have much chance to use English. That's why, no one makes my English right.

I want to try to write more comments and study more from your feedbacks.

By the way, I bought 'Outliar' and am reading it and enjoying!

>Anne
I don't know we can enjoy Ohenro without walking! Anyway, it's a nice season for visiting some temples. I'd like to go to Shikoku region I have never been to before.

Hi David,
That's a good idea! Yes, it's really useful for us to read your corrections and feedback, and I think it also motivates us to write English comments, so let's do it.

Hi Anne,
I checked the corner 'some more song', and I liked the video of 'Old MacDonald'. There are a lot of celebrities in the video, right? I found Hugh Grant and Whoopi Goldberg. It was funny!

Hi May,
You are welcome. You watched the video 'Two sea otters holding hands', too? I love the part when one otter reaches out to hold the other otter's hand again.

Hi Kiyoko,
Is it your grandson's sports day tomorrow? Have fun!

Hi Gussan,
I knew the expression 'early bird', but I didn't know 'night owl'. It's interesting! I liked it.

Hi Yuu,
Glad to hear you joined the book club. Well, I'm taking a break from reading it at the moment, though..^^;)

Have a great weekend, and see you soon.

Tomo

Hi David

I’ll go with you!
I really like your new idea. It would be very useful if you correct our sentence!
If you point out what is wrong like “we don't use 'by' with 'walk'”, it really works for us.

Hi everyone

Tomorrow is my nieces’ sports day, and it takes one and half an hour to get their school, so I have to leave home earlier than usual.

Good night and sweet dreams

Hi David,

Thank you for your good idea.
I have to write without miss as much as possible.
It is useful for us.

It reminds me of the time I had hard situation.

When I got some advice from NOVA counselor about English.
The counselor said to me.
Why don't you concentrate to grammar?
I knew it was a good advice for me.
But for some reason, from that moment on I couldn't say anything.

I try to write right English as much as possible.

Thank you David.

corrections

I have to write without miss as much as possible.

I have to write correct sentence as much as possible.

Hi David,
When I write in English on this blog, I'm not sure if a sentence I write is correct or not, so that idea is so nice!

Hi Anne,
Actually, I don't have an ipod. I wanted to download Youtube videos and store them on my computer, but as I said before, I could store only their sound, so I looked up other way to store it on the Internet, and I could to do it!!

Hi everyone,
As you know, I'm a piano teacher. My students pay tuition fee to me every month. The other day, my student who is 8 handed tuition fee to me, and asked me. "Why do I give you a money?" I smiled wryly, and I said "To give piano lesson is my job. Your father and mother have a job, and they get salary, right? The money you give me is my salary." She said "I see. What are you going to buy with your money?" I said "I use it for various things." She said "Did you use it when you went to Hawaii?" (I gave sweets of Hawaii to her, so she knew I went there.)..... I know, it is not bad to make a trip with a money I get as a salary, but what she said made me feel a bit badly. Sometimes the question of a child confuses us, doesn't it? I'm not doing anything wrong!!

Amica

Aw, Amica. Don't feel guilty ;-) It's so cute and funny. Kids ask innocent questions, do they?

Hi Amica,

Innocent questions! Exactly! As Lily said, you don't need to feel guilty.
By the way, I could easily imagine the scene which you two were talking and made me smile.

You could store You Tube videos on your computer? That's good!

Anne

Hi David,
Thank you!
I'm very glad to hear that.
I appreciate your kindness suggestion.
It's great help to us your correcting our English.
I want to write comments more.

It's drizzling around here.
I'm going out now.

Have a nice day, and see you soon!

Anne

Hi team,

I posted two entries by mistake this time. The first time I tried to upload the entry, I got an error message, so I did it again, but it must have got through both times. I just tried to delete the entry that has no comments, but for some reason, I couldn't.

Anne - that is a very good question. An 'outlier' in this book is a type of person, not a specific group of people. My correction is the best translation of what you want to say because 'a' actually means 'one'. If you use 'one of', you would usually follow it with 'the' to specificy a group of people (one of the people in Gladwell's book, one of the women I met last week, etc.) It is possible to use one of with 'a', but even then you would be introducing a specific group and only using 'a' because you had not mentioned that group before (one of a growing number of people who believe that ..., one of a few types of ..., etc.)

Hope that helps,

David

Oh, now the other entry has been deleted. I guess there was a time lag. Sorry about that.

Hi, team!
What's up?

I feel well even in the night before Monday.
Do you usually feel bad the day before weekday?

>Amica
I agree with Lily's and Anne's comment. You don't need to sorry for your student!
You are using your own time for improving their abilities. And you can get a wonderful time like going to Hawaii in the return. You and they can get benefit each other. What a nice job you have!

Hi David,

Thank you for your explanations! Actually, I didn't think of the case 'one of a' ,but I usually use as a set' one of the', and I had no idea about what you said ;'a' actually means 'one' ,at that moment.
An 'outlier' in this book is a type of person→This is the point, right?
Thank you!

Anne

Oh, who cannot agree with you David less on this matter? -i.e., I cannot agree with you more about this.

I came across this Blog a few months ago and have visited here now and then just to look at it since then. I have felt little attractive though.

On reading the entry this morning, I took to the idea David gave very much, whereas I found it something strange for us not to make ourselves much more active regarding this: improving our English ability.
Since I believe we are likely to do something useful each other, I mean we can point out and correct some errors or typos in the sentences other people wrote, besides expecting for David's corrections, we should definitely do so.

What do you all think of this?

Mie
