Masks
Hi team,
Glad you like the new idea. If you write lots of comments, I will give you lots of feedback :)
I read an interesting article the other day about the shock that western people get when they come to Asia and see people wearing surgical masks as they go about their everyday lives. I was relieved to find that it is not just me! I absolutely hate masks, and I hate talking to people who are wearing them. I can't understand what people are saying, and because I can't see their expression, it makes communication really difficult. Sometimes, I am not even sure who I am talking to because I can't recognize people who have half their face covered. I had never seen anyone wearing a mask outside a hospital until I came to Asia. Even doctors in my country only wear them when they are operating on someone. Anyway, after I read this article, I was wondering why Western people are so shocked to see Asian people wearing masks, and I came up with an idea.
Have you ever seen one of those old American movies about cowboys and bank robbers? If you have, you will know that bank robbers and other kinds of bad guys always covered their nose and mouth with a scarf - a bit like a surgical mask - so that people could not identify them. Because this image is so strong for Westerners, I think we associate masks with thieves and robbers, and that is why we don't like to see people wearing them. I also read in the article that masks are only effective until they become wet, so they have to be changed every two hours in order to give protection. Do Japanese people really change them that often?
Have you ever had any discussions with Westerners about masks before? Did they say the same thing as me? What do you think about the wearing of masks?
Look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Hi David,
I know I'm late, but I like your idea in the last entry!
I'm glad if you correct our writings, because it's always very helpful for us, Egnlish learners.
I had the same questions as Anne about "one of the Outliers", but now I understand. Thank you!
As for the topic, I haven't had discussions with any Westerners about masks. I've heard that they feel starange when they see people wearing masks, but I didn't know why they feel so. Like thieves and robbers?! Humm...I don't like wearing masks, but I think that people, include me of course, should wear them when we have the flu, because it's useful not to give it to other people. I have doubt whether it's useful to protect me from it, though.
Anyway, I don't think that Japanese people change
masks that often as well.
Talk to you later,
Maki

Hi David
I have never had discussions with Westerners about masks, but I have heard somewhere that the things like you had read.
When I lived in Okinawa, I hardly saw people wearing the masks.
That’s why I was so surprised to see many people wearing masks when I moved to Tokyo.
I am not used to wearing a mask, so I don’t wear a mask even I have a cold.
I used to watch old American movies when I was a child. I remember that bad guys covered their face with a scarf. Maybe that image is still somewhere in my head, so I don’t like masks.
Bye for now

Hi David,
This is an interesting topic! Actually, I talked about masks with my Japanese friend who lives in the US the other day, and she said that American people don't wear masks in their everyday lives and you can't buy them even in a drugstore. I was surprised to hear that because in Japan, you can get them everywhere, even at a supermarket. Well, they are sold out at many places at the moment because of swine flu, though. Actually, I needed to get some masks for my son the other day. As I mentioned before, my son was going on a school trip to Kyoto this month. I got a handout from his school last week, and it said that the students needed some masks for their school trip because swine flu was going around in the Kinki region, so I had to go to lots of stores to get them.(but I couldn't..) Well, in the end, the school trip is postponed to July, so they don't have to wear masks when they go to Kyoto in July.
The idea you came up with is interesting! Westerners associate masks with thieves and robbers? I never thought of it like that, but I think there is some truth in that image.
I want to write more, but I'm getting sleepy.. I'll make another comment later.
Good night,
Tomo
PS Gussan, I checked my dictionary and found this example sentence, ‘Just do the same as me (=as I do).’, so I think both ways are okay.

Hi David,
I've never thought it as you said,"Westerners associate masks with thieves and robbers." It's interesting!
Yes, I remembered watching old Americans movies . Cowboys and bank robbers covered with their nose and mouth with their scarf.
Recently because of the spread of swine flu( or new flu) a lot of people are wearing masks in Japan and every time I read articles on the Internet, I saw photos that a lot of people were wearing masks in the news and reporters always mentioned this situation; some of them were suspicious about the effect of masks.
After the announcement that a patient infected by new type of flue was found in Osaka, a lot of people rushed to drugstores to get masks, but I was so lazy that I went out to get them IN THE AFTERNOON , and went about searching for it at five stores, but I could get nothing! I was very surprised at this result.
Luckily , I had some stocks which I had bought this winter, it's OK for my family at the moment.
Usually, I don't like putting on a mask, and I don't wear it. I am not so nervous about recent situation, so I don't use it when I go out now.
Anyway, to describe the type of Japanese , you say' glasses, cameras and MASKS'!
Have a nice day,
Anne

When I was wearing a mask, my co-worker was preparing a lunch yesterday.
He have a microwaved a curry.
At that time, I smelled it.
I thought that the molecular of swine flu is smaller than the molecular of smell.
So I wonder if the mask is useful or not.
This time's topic is interesting.

Hi David,
Western people associate masks with thieves and robbers, so most of them don't wear a mask? I think we have a time we should wear a mask. If you have a cold, you might give it someone, so you should wear a mask. Of course, it is not perfect, but it has effect that prevent droplet infection. If I see someone who have a bad cough without a mask, I don't want to come near. Sometimes I wear a mask even if I don't have a cold. As you know, I'm a singer, so I need to protect my throat. When I take a plane, I always wear a mask because the air in a plane is dry. In winter, I sleep with a mask. When my student has a cold, I wear a mask because most of them don't wear it. So I always need a mask. Probably I can't live in Western countries....., because most of western people might have image of me who is a thief!

Hi David,
My sister and my father have hay fever, so they usually wear masks in spring. When I was a child, there were not many people who were suffering from hay fever, so I hardly saw people wearing masks in their everyday lives. It was a bit strange to see people wearing masks, but now it's not strange at all. I see many kinds of masks at a drugstore or a supermarket like for adults, children(There are also ones with lovely characters), colds, and hay fever.
I don't like wearing a mask, but I don't have any bad images of the idea of wearing masks. Actually, we have a lot of chances to wear them in childhood. You know, public elementary and junior high schools in Japan serve lunch which is called ‘kyuushoku’, and some students serve their lunch in turns.(We call them ‘kyuushoku touban.’) I don't know about the rules in other schools, but at my sons' schools, the students who serve lunch have to wear an apron, a cap(It looks like a white beret.), and a mask. I also wore them when I was in elementary and junior high school. I think Japanese people are used to wearing masks or seeing people wearing them much more than Western people, but I'm not sure how many people know about the effect or how to wear a mask properly.
As I mentioned, masks are sold out at many places at the moment because of swine flu. I watched the news on TV last night that some elementary students in Hyogo or Osaka(I don't remember which.) were making their masks from kitchen paper. Their homeroom teacher taught them how to make it in the class. I wondered whether the masks they made work for the flu or not.. Well, I think it's better than doing nothing. I don't know much about the effect of wearing a mask, but I also think it's a good idea to wear a mask not to pass your flu or cold on to others.
By the way, I couldn't buy any masks the other day, but my father has extra ones, so he gave me some. The box says that these masks have to be changed once a day in order to give protection and from the aspect of good hygiene.
See you soon,

Hi David and everyone,
The weather is just right,it's not hot,it's not cold.
I was relieved at David's idea about feedback. I began to at ease about writing comments.
I have had a discussion with a friend of my friend from Canada about masks a few years ago. He came to Japan in February ten years ago and looked
out of the window on the bus heading for the town.
He was surprised to see a lot of people wear masks.
He thought that the air in Japan must have been thick with pollution. It's common for Japanese people
to wear masks in February. I was surprised at the story.

Hi everyone
How's everything?
Today, I come home without finishing all jobs.
That's why, I feel a little bad. Haha...
>Mie
I agree with your opinion and suggestion about David's idea. We shouldn't relay all on him! But I can't find and point out some mistakes easily because I'm not confident with my English. And pointing out someone's mistakes in their comments in real time sometimes disterb active discussion.
So we have better indicate others' mistakes after our talks about the topic. How do you think? (I think, however, it's really difficult because we often pay attention to a new entry.)
By the way, as for a mask, it's interesting idea!
I also heard that Western people think a person wearing it is a bit strange. It may comes from the reason as David mentioned, masks remind them thieves or someone stranger. The idea, Western people looks people with mask strange, is caused from familiarity with masks.
As Tomo mentioned, We, Japanese, can find out and get them everywhere and we saw them almost every weekday at lunch time in elementary school but Western don't, do they?
That's why, Western people who isn't familiar with them may look upon people with them as strange.
In addition, I think mask have some effection for preventing some virus from entering our body.
In fact as you can easily imagine, mask ins't perfect things for virus. Net of mask, made from some fiber, can't stop all virus from going through the mask. But we can protect ourself from others' '唾液' which comes from petients with mask. The point is concentration of the virus. '唾液' of patients has more virus than the breath of them! So we have better wear a mask!
Sorry for my long comment.

Hi David and everyone,
It's cloudy today, but it's good season in Japan, not too cold or hot.
Already, lots of comments are saying, I agree with them.
I just want to write my opinion about this entry.(上手く書けませんので箇条書きで)
1. The article, David read, said "people wearing surgical masks".
I thought that's one of surgical maskes but it's called hygiene item mask(?) (衛生用品), or domestic mask (?)(家庭用マスク). (私が言いたいのは、普通に使われているのは、医療用とか手術用マスクでは無いということ。広い意味では医療用かもしれませんが。)
2. You hate talking with people wearing person.
I don't think so, I only want the person getting well.
3. we usually use masks for ourselves health, so I don't associate masks with bad person.
4. The article what saying, I don't understand that it wet and have to chang so often.
5. I have never had discussion with Westerners about masks before.
6. I think the masks are very useful for with keeping my health, while flu season, and take a walk for keeping warm my body in winter.
Finally, I am afraid of changing, into porson to porson, the swine fle's virus to chang strong poison virus.
This is my opinon.
Everyone have a good day!

Hi David and everyone,
Again about wearing masks, as Amica said, even though it might not be perfect, it would be effective not to convey viruses or to protect yourself. At the moment, if a person coughs or sneezes, people are so nervous about that, and everyone wants to get away from him or her even though he /she are not infected, I think.
By the way, the day before yesterday, when I went out, I dropped in 'Tokyu Hannzu, and there were a lot of masks! (But it was not a non woven fabric mask, but a woven fabroic one.)
>Tomo,
I watched the same news on TV;
Their homeroom teacher taught them how to make it in the class. I'm also wondering if it's effective or not.
By the way, I don't mean to say much here, but if you are interested in the interviews of American Idol, have a look at Larry King Live.
Just type 'Larry King' on the search box, and you'll get to the home page, and on the left, you'll find some videos. I think ' American Idol wrap up' is interesting.

As for the masks, my thought is quite simple. It is because the general public in Japan is much more careful about the public health than people in western countries due to the health education at grammar schools.
Westerners' prejudice against masks should be abolished.
As far as I am concerned, I have never ever worn any masks except a Halloween mask though.
Yuu: Thank you for the reply you have done for me. I am relieved to know that I was not ignored at all.
I think you can freely make a correction on other's comments if you feel like it as our end and aim have got to be improving our English fluency.
I am really crap at English, but I will try to make my attempt as much as possible.
The phrase pattern using the verb "agree"or "rely" should be "someone agrees with someone on/about something"or "someone relies on someone for something," I think.
May: a friend of my friend,
I am quite not sure of this use, but I guess it should be "a friend of my friend's" or "a friend of a friend of mine - if you have not only one friend.

Hi Mie and Stranger,
Welcome to the blog! Sorry, I couldn't say this sooner.
Mie - As for your suggestion, I'm more with Yuu on it. Of course, we should help one another, but we've been trying to do it on this blog. If someone asks a question, we try to answer it even if we are not sure about it. If no one can answer the question, David will help us, but unfortunately, David doesn't have time to answer every question or respond to every comment especially when he is busy or there are so many questions on one entry.
As for your corrections, here are my ideas.(*sb=someone, sth=something)
agree: I think your version is right, but I think it can be 'sb agrees with sth'(it also can be 'sb agrees to/on sth'), so I think Yuu's version is okay.
rely: I agree with your idea, so I think Yuu's sentence should have been "We shouldn't relay on him for all things" or "We shouldn't relay on him all the time". (Yuu、言いたいことが違っていたら sorry!)
According to David's book, the verb pattern is 'rely on sb/sth'.
a friend of my friend: I don't think you need to put " ' "(apostrophe) before the "s" because I think "a friend of my friends"= "one of my friends" = "a friend of mine". (I guess you wrote 'a friend' twice by mistake, though.)
By the way, you said, “I am really crap at English”, but I don't think so. Your English is great.

I cannot be too careful when I make an opinion about corrections. Thanks to you, I was able to learn one thing again today. Thanks a lot.
I am afraid not. As to the phrase "a friend of my friend", this sounded odd to me, I understood it as "my friend's friend", so I added an apostrophe, and again, if May's friend was unknown to others and May had more than one friend, I thought it would be better to express it as "a friend of a friend of mine" to specify it. That's it.
I know my English is "great", which means so god damn awful. Native speakers of English often ask me "Why are the Japanese - I hate this word; I would rather be called "Japs" than "the Japanese", though- so crap at English as well as you," I always reply "Don't ask me." I actually do not know the reason why. If I knew, I would.
Now that I am determined to study a grammar book of English which I have never had because I hated studying grammar and am going to buy it on this weekend, and manage to learn basic grammar of English through it. I will...

友達の友達 = a friend a friend, and 'a friend of another friend of mine' means 'one of your friends other than A', I see. Now I understand. Thank you!
Amo, you couldn't post your comment last night? Me, neither! Actually, I couldn't post my comments from my computer all day yesterday, so I posted the two comments from my cell phone.
Hi Anne,
Wow, you came up with a lot of ideas! Thanks for sharing them!

Hi David,
I'm very happy to have your correction of my English sentences. I've had almost no chances to get the pointing out in my written English from
others.
Therefore, your a new idea which corrects for the blog sentences is really useful and helpful, I think. I've noticed that your English words and
phrases were made me to study how to use it when I make the comments.
However, almost of them didn't stay in my memory. Then I've been wondering since starting this blog. On this time, I realized the situation that I made the mistakes why.
Then to tell the truth, I've been expecting like this unique idea for the serious English learners.
By the way, reading your entries and member's comments need my time, so I can not make comment constantly. I'm trying to hearing and looking of English sounds and scenes with radio, CD and web site for spending a lot of time. I'll never give up try to challenge to become a good English speaker.
Hi Anne, Tomo and everyone,
I enjoyed the sport day with many kids. They were all powerful and cute. What's more, they are really expert in their play world even a moment. In addition, my grandson's color got a win by one point, 954-953.
See you,
Kiyoko

Hi David and Everyone,
The day before yesterday I heard frogs in the rice fields croaking for the first time in years. It is within five-minute bicycle distance of my house. I associated the croaking of frogs with rain and it was
raining yesterday.
Thank you,Mie and Tomo,
私の友達の友達、と書きたかったのです。
your advice was helpful to me. I found an example in 英辞朗,"he is a close friend of a friend of mine.
いろいろ考えてくださって感謝しています。
Hi Anne,
I checked the interview. You seem to enjoy
a lot of web site. Your information stimulates me to check them.
By the way, there was an article about the author Malcolm Gldwell in the newspaper. You said that 勝間和代was a translator of "outliers" into Japanese.I'm sure the book will become a best seller in Japan too.
それにしても Gladwell なんて、いい名前とか思ったんですけど、違う?
Amo,Kazu,
Belated Happy Birthday!
By for now,

Hi David,
I'm sorry to stick a minor point in your comment.
You wrote;'Did they say the same thing as me?' in your entry.
I suppose the sentence, 'Did they say the same thing as I do?'
Can we do the phrase' as me' in grammatically correst way?
If you don't mid, please answer my question.
Thanks.
