The Weekend

Hi team,

Here is a picture that my brother sent me of my new nephew, aged three hours.

Oliver aged 3 hours

I must admit that all babies look the same to me, but my brother tells me that some people have said he looks like me! Anyway, I'm looking forward to meeing him later this year.

I had a very strange weekend because I only worked half a day on Saturday and I didn't come into my office at all yesterday. It was strange because I had forgotten what it feels like to have a normal weekend without work (well, almost without work). On Saturday morning, I got up at six to go out for a ride with my British friend Tony. (He is the one who has more bikes than I do.) We went up to Higashi Shirakawa in Gifu. The weather was great because it was not too hot in the morning, but it was starting to heat up when we got back at lunchtime.

On Sunday, I went to Yokkaichi to take part in a trials school run by a rider called Tomoyuki Ogawa. He is one of the top trials riders in Japan, and he was the all-Japan champion in 2007. If you do not know what trials riding is, have a look at this video.

I have not ridden my trials bike for about a year, and I had forgotten how much fun it is. I was in the 中級 group of riders, and I was surprised to find that there were four women and only three men in my class. The women were ver good riders, and I was struggling to keep up with them. Also, it was really hot, and I had not been on the bike for a long time, so I had to keep taking breaks. I fell off about three or four times, but I didn't hurt myself. There was one big rock that I had a lot of trouble getting over, but I managed it in the end, so I was quite happy by the end of the day. It made me realize that I need to get back into training!

At the end of the school, Ogawa san and the other teachers did a demonstration of riding that was completely unbelievable. They did some things that I would have said were not possible if I had not seen them with my own eyes. If you ever get a chance to see a trials demonstration, you should definitely go along. Even if you are not particularly interested in bikes, you will be amazed to see what these riders can do.

Anyway, I don't have a particular topic for you this week, but I thought it might be interesting for people to just write about what they did at the weekend. I will give you some feedback on your English on Friday. (If there is anything else you want to talk about, feel free to raise a different topic.)

Have a great week,

David

Hi,David!

So,so cute, your new nephew! Does he smile?sleep?・・・ I also thought that he looks like you a little. Actually,I agree with you that all babies look the same.Sometimes I'm shown some pictures of babies on cell-phone by my friends, but actually I don't know what I have to say. But, it's a special thing only about my relatives! When my sister-in-low gave birth to my niece,I thought that she looks like me!and I really thought that she is cute, honest. But
now she is 3 years old,and grown up to be a fine & so beautiful girl. So,nowadays she is completely unlike me!What a wonder!!

Thank you for your uploading about riders. Tokai-region is more hot than tokyo, isn't it? I'm going to watch&try this one. It was so great that you had nice weekend! from himitsu

Sorry,again!

「笑ってるのかな?寝てるのかな?」と、言いたかったのですが

Does he smile?sleep?

コレ、へんですよね・・・

What a fool I am that I can't make such a basic sentence!

誰か、助けてください笑

Hi David,
Your nephew is so cute like a doll! You must admit that all babies look the same to you? I agree with you, but I think that a face of Westerner baby is different from a face of Japanese baby even if they have just been born.

Hi Anne,
Thanks for telling the songs you recommend. I know the song "You raise me up ", so I listened the song "You're still you" on youtube. What a beautiful song! I read the song's lyric. This song matches well with wedding party. I got this song's score, and it was not difficult for me to play it, so I decided to sing this song!

About what I did at the weekend, I write later.

Amica

Hi David,

Wow! Cute!! Is he only aged three hours at that time?? He looks older, I mean 「しっかりしたきれいな顔立ち」. Thank you for sharing his picture!

It's nice to know that you had another unusual weekend.;-) I'd seen off-road trials riding before, but I hadn't done this. Unbelievable! How can they manage bikes like their arms and legs?! Hope trials riding will make you spend another unusual weekends!

Bye for now,

Maki

Hi David,

Thank you for your new nephew's photo. He is so cute. He will become a nice guy in the near future.

By the way, I tried to find out my comment which I posted on last Saturday, but I couldn't find it.
First, I doubted my own miss-posting and checked the more old week's blog, and I found it in there.
So I paste it on today's blog.

******
Hi David,
I'm relaxing in the room. That's why, I have no assignments tomorrow.
I've read your Monday's entry on yesterday and I found out your kind mind about member's example sentences. I was so glad to find out it yesterday. I've really realized that I was not serious about usage the difference between "find" and "find out".

Therefore, I make comment reviewing the usage of the difference for repeating your correction. I've never been serious since learning English on this time. I'm not sure, but I came up logically why I did misusing in my case.

Firstly, I was confused with "out".

Secondly, so I naturalized my mind into "out", that I made some efforts or took a lot of time to do it, I mean as "find out".

Thirdly, I disregarded the rule that "find out" is not usually followed by a noun except some cases.

Fourthly, I've noticed that I usually didn't use "find out".

As you said, tried making my own sentence and getting your correction was useful way, indeed.
This time, seeing from this point, weekly feedback system was the best way to understand the difference.

Good night,

Kiyoko

Hi everyone,
It is rainy season but up till now, it has being cloudy, not rain.

Speak to you soon,

Kiyoko

Hi David,

Thanks for showing us the picture of your lovely nephew! Aged three hours? How adorable! I think he looks a bit like you, but I think Max looks a lot like you.

By the way, you went to Gifu on Saturday? My husband went for a ride to Gujohachiman in Gifu on Sunday. He went there alone, and it was an overnight trip. It was about 500 km to get there, so he was supposed to ride about 1,000 km in all, but he only rode about 600km after all. Why? Because..

On the way back home, he was riding on the expressway, but he decided to get it off at Okaya IC and use route 142 called Venus Line. He tried to slow down so that he could change lanes, but he noticed that the right break(the front brake?) didn't work right. He was near a parking area, so he managed to get there and checked his bike. He found out that the right side of the front brake was broken. He saw the two screws to join the brake pad were gone!
So, he had to leave his bike(he got a tow truck) and took train to get back home from Okaya in Nagano. That's why he only rode 600 km in all.
I'm glad he didn't get an accident, but how could such a thing happen? He got his bike checked at a bike shop in April.

Hi Himitsu,
<「笑ってるのかな?寝てるのかな?」 How about this?
Is he smiling or sleeping?

See you soon,

Tomo

Hi David,
Thank you for showing the picture of your nephew.
What a beautiful baby!
I thought that the new baby a little bit resembled David, me too.

"aged three hours 3時間歳の" このように言うのですね。

Hi Tomo,
ご主人バイクの遠乗り、帰りたいへんでしたね。
怪我じゃなくてほんとに良かった!

Hi,Tomo!

Thank you!
やっぱり、 Is he・・・? ですよね汗

Why did I use DOES?

I have no idea・・・・・・

Hi,David!
How cute he is!!
Babys look like angels.
And babys make us happy!!

Hi, David!

A baby always brings joy! I hope your nephew is a
good baby and is giving his parents some rest.

We had a lot of fun this weekend, too. We had a
special soccer event for kids on Bowen Island.
An ex-national team player joined the event as a
special guest. My son, just turned 8 years old,
loves playing soccer and my husband is a soccer
fanatic. My TWO BOYS were so happy taking part
in this event.
My son played three games and received a lesson
from the former professional player. My son's face
was beaming in a huge grin. I was so glad to see
his beaming smile, because I know that he is having
a hard time adjusting to his new life.
His adjustment to a new life, new school, new
friends, new language, is somewhat painful.
Someone says "There is no language barrier in
music." We can say the same for sports.
I sincerely hope my son is building his self-
confidence and forming good friendships.

Hi eeko,
ありがとうございます! 気付いた場所がサービスエリアの近くだったのでラッキーでしたね~。 本当に何事もなくて良かったです。 あのまま気付かずに峠道に行ってたら・・と思うと怖いです・・!

Hi himitsu,
You are welcome! Maybe he is having a sweet dream;-)

Tomo

Hello,again Tomo,

I agree with you・・・ zzz・・・

Hi Tomo,
I'm relieved to hear that your husband was all right and got back home safely. 本当に良かった!

Maki

Hi, David!

I apologize for having pressed POST more than
once on the last posting responding. I thought
that my computer was acting funny. It was not
intentional to press the same post three times.

Please delete the multiple posting (leave one,
please).

Hi Maki,
Thanks! It took him a lot of time to get home by train, but he was very lucky not to have an accident.

Hi BCK,
Everyone has posted the same comment more than once by mistake, so don't worry about that.
By the way, thanks for sharing your story. I understand that moving house is very stressful. Actually, we moved here when my son was in the third grade. It was very stressful for him because everything was new – a new life, a new school, and new freinds(We live in Japan, so it was much easier than your son's case, though.) I hope your son gets used to the new life there soon.

Tomo

Hi David and Everyone,
Did you see the Google logo today? It's very pretty. Have a look if you're interested in it.

I'm being back to watch a soccer game; Japan vs Australia on TV.;-)

Talk to you later,

Maki

Hi Maki,
ロゴ見たよ~。 サッカーは負けちゃったねぇ。。

Hi everyone,
There seems to be more and more new members coming while I was away. I have to find some short stories to post as soon as possible.

Hi Tomo,
I didn't know what had happened to your husband's bike. I hope he'll never run into that trouble again.

Hi Maki,
The Japan soccer team lost the game ? Mmm, I'm not sure if we can expect them to win in South Africa.

Appoh

Hi BCK,

Hi nice to meet you! Sorry I was late to say a welcome comment for you.

When I've read your story of Bowen island and known your gentle mind, I could keep my mind a little happy, so I'd like to give my cheer to you and
your family.
I believed that the children have the potential abilities and they made the parents happy. Actually, I had got much lucky time and I used to be delighted during my child raising.
Now, I have three grandsons near age of your son, and they are living in their schooling. Of course they may have some stresses, pressures and more.
However, when I compare with home and away, the contents of both elements are alike but different.
To have the good experience will become a big treasure in his future.
So make chances for your children as much as possible in there.
When my kids were young I wished to have them an international job, but it was over only my dream. My relatives were not in international mood.

I like watching soccer game with TV, and I watched the World Cup tournament game Japan and Uzbekistan on the other days.
As you say, there is a little language barrier in music and sports. It might be right in art world.
Anyway, believe your son's energy and adjustment and also watch with your hopeful mind.

Bye for now,

Kiyoko

Hi David

Thank you for sharing your new nephew’s photo.
He’s cute, and looks like you!!

I was woken up by my cell-phone ringing on Saturday morning.
It’s from one of my co-worker.
I wanted to go back to sleep, but I totally awoke, so I did some housework in the morning.
I wanted to finish reading the textbook of finance, so it’s not a fun weekend.
The only thing I enjoyed on Saturday was watch American Idle.
Usually I don’t watch American Idle, but I wanted to watch Adam’s last performance.
He was amazing, so I can’t still believe that he lost the final.

Hi everyone

I was sleepy today because my second sister came to Tokyo due to her job.
She took the last airplane, so it arrived at Haneda around 11 PM.
It’s already past midnight when she got to our place.
She is a funny person, so she couldn’t stop talking and her story made us laugh.
We couldn’t go to sleep around 2 AM.

Hi Maki

I checked Google logo and it’s pretty.

Good night and sweet dreams

Hi, Tomo & Kiyoko!

Thank you for your encouraging comments.

Kids have amazing ability to absorb and learn new
things. I believe in my son's strength of spirit and
potential.

Kids soak up language as a sponge. I can learn
something about second language learning by
looking at how my 8-year-old boy learns.

BCK

Hi Appoh,
Thanks for your message. I hope so, too!

Hi amo,
You are lucky to have such a funny person as your sister;-) By the way, you said ‘my second sister’, do you have another sister? I have two big sisters.

Hi David and everyone,
I'm going to write about what I did at the weekend. As I mentioned on the last entry, I had an annual medical check-up called ‘ningen dock’ on Saturday. On that morning, I couldn't eat or drink anything because I had to take an X-ray check with barium. I hate barium. When I had the medical check-up for the first time, I was told that barium tasted like yogurt and I would have carbonated powder as well. I imagined 'yogurt drink' and 'soda powder', but they were completely different from what I had imagined! Anyway, I took the medical checks for the third time on Saturday, so I knew how they tasted, but I can never get used to the awful taste. Well, it's over, and the doctor said that I was in a good condition, so I'm very happy about that.

See you soon,

Tomo

Hi Tomo,
I was relieved to hear that your husband got home safely. When he noticed that the right break didn't work, he was near a parking area? What lucky he was! By the way, you took an X-ray check with barium? I hate barium! That taste is like cement!(I have never drunk cement, though.) I have a checkup for stomach with gastrocamera because it is easy to do it than drinking barium. Have you done it? If you haven't, try it!(笑)

Hi BCK,
Thanks for sharing your story. When I was a child, my family often moved because of my father's job. So I had to change an elementary school three times. It was very hard to adjust to life in a new school, so I know how your sons feel. Actually, I suffered from bullying in elementary school. When I moved from Tokyo, I was 9, and I didn't understand local dialect. Because I spoke the standard language, they felt I put on airs, so they bullied me, I think. I was in that school only a year, but it was very hard experience. In a next school, I could have lots of friends and happy school life. I hope your sons are able to adjust to his new life and have lots of friends soon.

Hi everyone,
The other day, I had a concert, and I got lots of flowers and sweets. Last Sunday, I went to go shopping to buy return presents. I bought aroma goods. Good smell makes us comfortable, right?

Hi Anne,
I'm worried about you because I don't see you this week. Are you OK? I miss you.

Amica

Hi Amica,
Thank you for your kind words.
I'm OK, but I'm a bit tired to write something in English or join here, so I'm going to be away for a while. By the way, I'm glad you like the song"you're still you".

Bye for now,

Anne

Hi Amica,
Thanks for your message. Yes, he was very lucky!
You think barium tastes like cement?(笑) I've never tried it, either, but I agree with you! I've never had my stomach checked with a gastro camera. Is it easier than drinking barium? Really? Doesn't it hurt?
By the way, my sister likes aroma goods especially lavender ones. She sometimes lights an aroma candle so that she can relax.

Hi Anne,
Glad to see your comment! I was also worried about you and wondering how you were doing. You are a bit tired and going to take a break for a while? Are you really OK? Please take a good rest and come back here soon. We need you!

Speak to you soon,

Tomo

Hi Tomo & Amica,
I prefer a gastro camera, too. It doesn't hurt at all and it's getting better and easier than it used to be.
Try it next time!;-)

I also like aroma goods, so I sometimes enjoy an aroma candle, though I haven't lighted it yet after moving here at an apartment.

Hi Anne,
I'm glad to see your commnet! I'm also the one who was worried about you. I was wondering if you were going off on a trip. Please take it easy and talk to you soon.

Bye for now,

Maki

Hi,everyone,

This afternoon,when I worked, I saw a strange scene at Yoyogi-Park.
It seemed that tonight, there is a concert of Ayumi Hamasaki.
(コレ、どうなんでしょう?コンサートがある、と言いたいのですが)
There were many, many fans gatherd in front of the entrance, and around the park, lots of bizarre cars.
Those cars・・・how can I describe・・・? those bodies, themselves were white, and were printed those doors or bonnets so vividly with her pictures from sleeves of her CDs!
Those were just Ayu-cars!
I was so overpowered with her popularity.
But I thought ,what a waste those cars!
Can we see the scene like this in another countries, for example in case of Britney Spears,Madonna, and so on・・・?

I'm afraid of that I could tell you about this well or not.
I'm not sure,but just I tried.
Thank you everyone. See You! himitsu

Hi Tomo

I have sisters more than one.
Do you remember I sometimes mentioned about my sisters in this blog.
My youngest sister lives in USA and I live with two of my sisters.
My oldest sister has 4 children and my second sister lives in Okinawa.
Additional I have a brother who lives in Okinawa.
Can you count how many siblings I have?
By the way, when I had medical check this year, I chose gastro camera for it.
I cannot compare which is better because I have never tried barium.
But I prefer gastro camera.

bye for now

Hi David and everyone,

First of all, Let me say this to David.
"Thank you for uploading cute baby photo."
It look like very much you.
I know the baby is not yours, thought.

Hi Tomo,

Speaking of annual medical checkup.
I'm supposed to do annual medical checkup next month.
As you said, I have to drink barium.
I don't dislike barium but I don't like a cup of carbonic powder.
It is used in order to inflate a stomach.
And after checkup,I have to drink a laxative.
The distance between my house and hospital is far.
It takes about 40 minute by car.
I always go back home in a hurry after drink it, and after that, you can imagine it easily.
I'm always tired after medical checkup.
So I make it a rule to take a day off at that time.

This is my experience of medical checkup.
This topic was useful for me because there were a lot of new words for me.

Thanks Tomo.

See you later.

Kazu

Hi Maki and Amo,
You two prefer a gastro camera? Hmm, it sounds like having your stomach checked with a gastro camera is not that bad or painful. OK, I'll think about this when I have a medical check-up next year.

And Amo, thanks for answering my question. I thought your sister used to live in USA and live in Japan now. You have 3 sisters and one brother, right? That's nice! 今はバラバラだろうけど、みんなで集まったら賑やかで楽しそうだね^^

Hi Himitsu,
<It seemed that tonight, there is a concert of Ayumi Hamasaki.
(コレ、どうなんでしょう?コンサートがある、と言いたいのですが)

I'm not sure how to say that, but I would say..
It seemed like that there was going to be a concert of Ayumi Hamasaki tonight.

By the way, did you see a lot of cars with pictures of Ayumi Hamasaki painted on them? Wow! I have seen trucks with some pictures painted on them, but I've never seen those cars.

Hi Kazu,
You are welcome, but I'm not sure if my English is good or not because I hadn't talked about medical checks in English before, so don't trust me.(笑)
By the way, are you going to have a medical check-up next month? It's not fun, but it's a good chance to check your health, so がんばって下さい^^

See you soon,

Tomo
