The Power of the Internet
Hi team,
Did you have a good weekend? I worked on Saturday, but I went for a long ride on my bike yesterday. In the evening, I found some more bike racing on TV, and then I went for a run. All in all, it was a very relaxing weekend.
Today's topic may seem a bit strange to some of you because the power of the Internet is hardly a new topic, but I have only recently begun to realize how many things it can be used for.
As you know, I am writing my PhD thesis at the moment. Two weeks ago, I had a data emergency with the file. Every time I tried to save it, the computer just crashed. I eventually realized that the file had grown to a huge size, and that is why the computer was crashing, but I didn't know why it had got so big. Anyway, I asked a friend, and he just did a quick search on the Internet and came up with a discussion forum of people who had experienced the same problem. Within a few minutes, I had found out what was wrong and how to put it right. (The problem was caused by using bullet-points and numbering styles, and by using Excel charts without compressing them, in case anyone is interested.)
This afternoon, I have been playing with Adobe Illustrator because I am trying to redesign my business card. I have a manual for the software, but I couldn't find out how to center things. Remembering my experience with Word, I just typed "centering in Illustrator"into Google, and I found another discussion forum where someone had asked exactly the same question as me. I read the answer, and it solved my problem immediately! I wonder what people did in the days before the Internet?
Anyway, I was wondering if any of you have solved any problems by looking for and finding answers to your questions on the Internet. If you have, please share your stories.
Bye for now,
David

Hi David and everyone
I was busy at work last two weeks due to internal audit from head office. I had to prepare the report based on the findings of internal auditors. Anyway it finished last Friday, so it’s back to normal.
About this week topic, nothing came up my mind right now. I’ll think it over and if something came up, I will share my story.
bye for now

Hi David and Term,
In the days before the Internet is used in common ,e.g. 15 years ago, we had to access to "grass-roots network" or service provider's Bulletin Board System(BBS) via slow modem. It was too tough to find the article what I wanted.
At the beginning of the Internet, I experienced the same. I needed to "grep(one of operating systems' command for finding and filtering words from texts)" the article from the logging.
I believe the situation have completely changed since some search engines were appeared in 1990's, e.g. Altavista, Yahoo, and Google.
Around that time, I could not imagine that today's World Wide Web is so useful.
Anyway,
Today we can access to Q&A,FAQ information on the Internet.
In the same way as David has experienced, I everyday need to "google" to solve my issue.
For example, how to make good cook pasta, how to go to hot-spa hotel and reserve it, and so on.
The Internet is very useful. however, at the same time, there are full of incorrect information. so we need to "grep" them out by hand.
How can I solve this problem after the Internet?
Thanks,
Yoshi-

Hi,everyone.
Last weekend it was too hot in Osaka. So I was at home.
Well..I often use Internet to ask my question.
For example how to cook,to check the latest books, effect of medicine, and so on.
Today I have solved my question about a rare dog by looking on Internet.
Internet is very useful!
But I can't think every information on Internet is true.I think Internet has dangerous and incorrect aspect but Internet is very useful and great.I agree Tomo's comment.
So I use Internet for reference. And I read many page on Internet, compare the infomation, choice.
Internet give me a lot of knowledge!
See you soon!

Hi David and everyone,
I can't imagine the life without the Internet now.
I remember the day when I browsed the Internet for the first time about ten years ago. I was thrilled with reading a lot of articles and getting an information on the website related to the book "Anne of Green Gables".
I sometimes do a search on the Internet, or access to the page 'Q &A' ,FAQ , and have solved the problems.
To be honest,I am not good at the computer or other gadgets, so once the computer have some problems, in most cases, it's very difficult for me to find out what was wrong. A few months ago, when I switched on my computer, and tried to access some website, but I couldn't; I couldn't access to any page, and I was panicked. I read an answer book, and then I accessed to FAQ page with another computer, but I failed. I gave up solving the problems and asked for help to some computer repair company. Can you imagine what was wrong?
I had locked the security key. That's it! I didn't have no idea when and why I had done it!
It cost nine thousand yen; it cost much, but I was relieved, and I noticed there were a lot of people who couldn't find out what was wrong with computer same as me ,especially the elderly. There are a lot of self-employed people related to computer. It's really a kind of a niche business, isn't it?
Anyway, it was my miserable and embarrassing experience!
Hi Yoshi &Nao,
Nice to meet you.
If it's not your first comment, sorry.
Anyway, have fun together!

Is this your first comment? If so, welcome to the blog!
Hi Nao,
Nice to hear from you again! My English was very poor when I joined the blog. I had no confidence in my English and was nervous about writing comments. If you keep trying your best with your English you have now, I'm sure you'll improve your English because that's how I improved my English on this blog. And of course, I'm still trying.(まぁ、時々はサボってますが。。(笑)) 一緒に頑張りましょうね^^

Hi David and Everyone,
I don't remamber whether I have solved a computer problem by looking for on the internet before. Maybe not. The internet is very useful for my daily life and there are a lot of informations, as other members said, however I have to be careful when I pick them up and use them.
Hi Yoshi,
Welcome to the blog!
Hi Nao,
Glad to hear from you again! Please feel free to post your comment.;-)

Hi David and everyone,
I got a problem when I renewed my security software. I had to uninstall the old one first and then install a new one, but after I unistalled the old one, my computer didn't work right. I couldn't access the Internet at all. I wanted to call the security software company, but it was weekend, so the company was closed. I went to my sister's house and did a search on the Internet. I found the website of the company and read some explanations and the FAQ page, and they solved my problem.
I'm too sleepy to write any more..
Good night, and see you soon.

Hi David and everyone,
The Internet is very useful for me, so as Anne said, I can't imagine the life without it now. I often make musical scores for my students on PC.
My students often have a song they want to play, and they ask me to play it. Most of the songs they want to play are difficult for them, so I arrange the songs for them. (When I didn't have PC, I made handwritten it. It was very hard to do it!) I can listen to a music I arranged on PC. One day, I tried to listen to it as usual, but I couldn't it. I didn't know why I couldn't listen, so I did a search to solve it on Internet. Then, I found out there were some people who had the same problem as me. On Internet, they asked about it, and some of people gave the solution to it. I read it and got the solution. After that, I could listen to the music.
Hi Yoshi,

Please go easy on me. :-)
I could not stop posting the comment because I am interested in this kind of topics.
Actually, To be honest, It was the first time for me to read this blog. However, I could post my idea on this blog. How come I could do that thing? I am not sure but I felt something good atmosphere at the time, I guess.
Hi Anne,
Great, most people can not do fault isolation like you when they face that kind of issue.
I suppose it is very important to have backup computer(s).
I have another story.
We can access to the Internet via mobile phone but sometimes we can not see some internet sites that we wanted to browse because the site has not supported via mobile.
Three weeks ago, I wanted to browse certain site.
So I jumped into an internet cafe to do this.
I was realized and at the same time surprised that I was really rely on the Internet.

As you said, Internet is very useful, but it is true that it could be very dangerous and we are required to have an eye whether its information is trustworthy or not.

Hi David and everyone,
As some members said, there is so much information on the Internet that it's sometimes difficult to know which one to trust.
Several years ago, when my son was playing a video game on his DS, he asked me to check the Internet to get some information for the game because he wanted to get some rare items or something in the game. I typed the title of the game and some other words into Yahoo, and I found a lot of sites and community forums where people had played the same game. I chose one of them and showed the site to my son, but when he tried the way explained there, his DS crashed. Apparently, we tried a wrong way.. We had to get the DS repaired at an electric store, but I think it was a good lesson.
Anne, thank you! I'm sure he's having a lot of fun with his friends.
See you soon,

The article is very interesting. It tells how to use Internet is very important.

(This time I checked the meaning by Internet,But I couldn't find it.)

Hi Nao,
"music lyrics" means "歌詞".
If you want to know the lyrics, type " thriller( name) + lyrics" on the blank, then you can get the lyrics, and I don't think it's dangerous.
Hi Tomo,
"free" is attractive, and as you said we have to be careful to access these sites.
Hi everyone,
I've just returned from a concert " Simon &Garfunkel". The concert was great and they meant a lot in my youth to me, so I'm happy now.

Hi David and everyone,
Hi new members nice to meet you !
David, you have a good friend to help you, and you solved your problem easily. That's nice and cool !
I will try to write my experiences with my P.C.
I want to talk about two my experiences.
At first, one day I started to use my computer, then its showed blue screen with a lot of English words.
Unfortunately I understood only few sentences to translate in English to in Japanese, its said that I need to shut down and restart again. I was very surprised that time.
( Actually every time, computer-words are too difficult for me.)
Next story, I opened the browser but it didn't open my homepage. Why? Then I checked the modem's power lights, it was keeping on. I had no idea what was problem.
Finally I telephoned the store which I bought my one. the store assistant told me checking on the browser from File-point to online- working and there was maybe the check on it.
As he said that sometimes into checked in off-line -working without you did the checked on it. That time my problem was gone!
(プラウザが勝手に、‘オフライン作業’の所にチェックが入ることがあるので、そのチェックを外すとプラウザが立ち上がる、ということ。)
That's all.
Everyone have a good day !

Hi David and everyone
As other members mentioned, the internet is very useful.
We can search anything. Last summer I found a good eye doctor.
I don’t remember when it occurred in my left eye but the white eye(白目) had been covering the black eye(黒目) little by little, and it became bigger and bigger. So I decided to have an operation before it would affect my eye sight.
Have you ever heard of pterygium(翼状片)? I had never heard of it until I was told from the eye doctor, so I checked it up on the internet. I found out that it’s not so serious symptom. It said it occur in old people or who lives at high altitudes or near the sea. The ultraviolet is incriminated as a cause of this symptom. I did not know any good eye doctor so I typed “翼状片手術” into Google and I came across an eye doctor’s website and I read it, and his words made me decide to ask him an operation. I exchanged emails with him and decided on the date of the operation. I think I was very lucky because he is a really good doctor. Many people ask him to have an operation from everywhere in Japan. When I had an operation, he had another four operations. He did these operations after his routine care, so his first operation started around 5 p.m.
Isn’t he amazing? Am I getting off the track again??? Anyway, thanks to the internet I was able to find a great doctor.

Pleased to meet you, too.
(That's what I paid for. )
There are a lot of communities on the Internet.
For Instance, we can find communities for child care, for a disease and so on.
It is true that the Internet bring people who have same issue together. These communities give people a charge.

Yes, when I read it, I was also surprised to find the name"music lyrics" there.
It was fun to read member's comments related to the Internet, and again I'm sure( or another expression'confirm the thought' ?) that the Internet is indispensable in my everyday life; I use it to google something, blogging , exchangeing e-mails and other things every day.
I can't imagine the life without the Internet, yet if some problems would happen with my computer, it would be a good idea to ask someone for help , at least in my case.
PS. According to thr recent news, Googpe has attempted to get into the social-network business.
Looking forward to David's feedback!

Hi Anne,
Generally, fault isolation is the way to separate the failure parts. (computer lingo)
However, the system can not separate the part actually, so the system will detect and indicate the failure part in various ways.
In the same way, users can find out the issue by following procedure.
That is failure isolation.
>PS. According to the recent news,
>Google has attempted to get into
>the social-network business.
If my understanding is correct, Google will release a common API (Application Programming Interface) for SNS sites named 'OpenSocial' to get SNS sites together under the standard of Google. just an API.
Hi May,
I recommend that you install(overwrite) Adobe Flash player 10 by hand.

Hi team,
Yes, I have solved a lot of problems by looking for and finding answers to my questions on the Internet.
When I renewed my browser, my computer didn't show English texts clearly.(It was a bit blurry.) For some Japanese people, it would be okay because they don't read or write English, but for me, it was a big problem.(英語の文字が乱視になったみたいにぼやけていたんです) I didn't know how to fix it, so I did a search on the Internet and found a discussion forum where someone had asked exactly the same question as me. I read the answer and learned how to change the setting on my computer. I've already forgotten how to do it, though..
Although there are a lot of dangerous things on the Internet, there are also great things there.
I have to get up at 4 tomorrow morning because my son is going on a school trip, so I'll make another comment later.
Good night, everyone!
Tomo
