Noripi
Hi team,
Did you have a nice weekend? I went for a ride on Saturday afternoon, but I spent Saturday evening in my office. Yesterday, I finished my work quite early, so I went for a long walk on the 東海自然歩道, which runs near my house. It was nice, but I walked for about three hours, and I was very sweaty when I got back!
Hi Sisilemon. That is an interesting question. It is much easier to skim read in English even without the kanji because of the spaces between words. I think readers of Japanese need to look at the kanji to find the sections of the text, but in English, the spaces help us to break it up. There is also research to suggest that native speakers tend only to read the first and last few letters of each word. There was a funny email that got sent around the world a few years ago where all the middle letters of the words were rearranged, but it was still easy to read.
I have booked my ticket on the ferry to Hokkaido! If everything goes according to plan, I will be arriving in Tomakomai on the 20th. I'm going to be spending about a week in Sapporo before heading off to my favourite places around Kussharoko and Masshuko. I recently bought an antenna for my computer, which means that I will have access to the Internet wherever I go, so I will try to post regular updates and show you some pictures.
This weekend, I was very surprised to see that Sakai Noriko had been arrested for drug use. I don't actually know very much about Japan's 芸能界, but I fell in love with Noripi when I first arrived in Japan way back in 1994. At the time, I used to watch Japanese TV all the time because I wanted to learn the language as quickly as possible. I hated most of the programmes, but I loved the drama in which she played a deaf woman (I don't remember the name), and I became a Noripi fan (I still have 青いウサギ on my iPod!) I was very disappointed when she got married, butI had discovered my next love (Chiharu Tamashiro from Kiroro) by that time, so I got over it pretty quickly. In view of the influence that her husband appears to have had on her, I think she would have been better off marrying me! (Chiharu too, probably.)
Anyway, I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts about this story.
Bye for now,
David

Hi all!
Sakai Noriko is stupid. She ruined her son's life as well as her career. Oh, and I'm fed up with the gossip of drug users of celebrities
David:
If you had married her what influence would you have had on her? I just wonder.

Hi David,
Glad to hear that you had a nice weekend. Did the three-hour-walk make you feel refreshed?
<There was a funny email that got sent around the world a few years ago where all the middle letters of the words were rearranged, but it was still easy to read.
I didn't know that native speakers tend only to read the first and last few letters of each word. That's interesting. I can't read like that, though.
As for the topic, I was also very surprised to see that Sakai Noriko had been arrested for drug use. When I saw her husband had been arrested for drug use first, I was not surprised at all. Just before that news, I saw an actor, Oshio Manabu, had been arrested for drug use. A lot of celebrities or entertainers have been arrested for drug use, so I just thought, "There they go again" when I watched the news about Noripi's husband. I felt sorry for Noripi and her son and hoped that they were okay, but a few days later, I heard a newscaster calling Noripi ‘Sakai Yougisha’, and I couldn't believe my ears! Now I'm worried about her 10 year-old-son. Both his father and his mother have been arrested.. It's terrible. I really hope he will get over this.
I also watched the drama you mentioned. It's ‘星の金貨.’ It had a sad ending, but I loved the drama, and I became a fan of Takenouchi Yutaka. I watched ‘続・星の金貨’ as well.
By the way, you can access to the Internet while you are in Hokkaido? That's great! I'm looking forward to your Hokkaido stories and pictures;-)
Tomo
PS I laughed when I read this "I think she would have been better off marrying me! (Chiharu too, probably.)"! Maybe you are right.(笑)

Hi David! Hi everyone!
Thank you for your opinion about skim reading in both Japanese and English sentences.
It was very interesting to hear that the spaces between words play a big role in English!
And also your speculation that Japanese look at the kanji to find the sections of the text when we read is, I think, very interensting and reasonable.
I've ever noticed that kind of ideas...thank you!

Hi folks,
It's rainning now but nor heavily.
I'm not familiar with Japanese entertaiment world.
It may be stressful.
However, I think money changes everything.
Noriko Sakai and her husband had to have enough money to maintain their good life.
It is really true that she lost everything.
See ya,

>> Noriko Sakai and her husband had to have enough money to maintain their good life.
Yes, they believed that money can buy happiness. Having said that, she could at least hire a crackerjack lawyer like Johnnie Cochran.

Hi David,
You must be a shocked when you've heard this news.
I'm not fan of her but I was shocked too.
I was worrying about her and her son when I heard the news first.
Because I was thinking that she was going to commit suicide.
But it was completely wrong.
She was attempting her escape.
I couldn't believe that.
Still now, I don't want to accept the fact that she was going to escape.
She will get some punishment.
I hope she will come back on the right track again.

Hi David and Everyone,
First of all, I hope that you all in Kanto and Aichi area are all right. I was surprised at the news about the big earthquake this morning.
It's interesting that native speakers tend only to read the first and last few letters of each word.
I wish I could read like that!;-)
It's you, David! You were very disappointed when Noripi got married, but you had discovered your next love, so you got over it "pretty quickly"!? (笑)
As for the topic, I also don't know very much about Japan's 芸能界. Tomo said totally the same with what I thought. I was very sorry for Noripi and her son when I heard the news about her husband. I think that a lot of people worried about her suicide at that time, but the next news was beyond my assumption. Anyway, I really hope that her son will not suffer from it as much as possible.
Maybe she would have been better off marrying you, David.;-)
Talk to you later,
Maki

Hi David and everyone,
I was surprised to hear about Noripi's arrest on using drug. But I think it was good for her that she was arrested, because if someone forced her to stop using drug, she would have kept doing it. It could be a good chance for her to resume her healthy and live. I hope that she live happily with her son. Anyway,I'm sure that recovery from drug addiction is an extremely delicate process.
Hi David,
You'll be in Hokkaido next week. I hope the weather is nice.

Hi David and everyone,
Last morning when the earthquake happened, I had already waken up and felt a good shake, but it was okay around here. Thanks,Maki! I think I need to recheck the stuffs of the emergency bag in my house.
As for this week's topic, I had the same feeling with other members; first I felt sorry for Noriko Sakai, and then I was surprised at the news that she was arrested for drug use, but recently you often hear the news celebrities being arrested for drug use, and I guess it might be the tip of the iceberg.
Why are people so addicted to drug? To relieve the stress? Or just for fun? Whatever the reason might be, drug use must steal the best part of themselves, and it's really sad and scary that a lot of people suffer from getting out of drug addicts.
You hear the news that drug use have been spreading among college students; they seem to use just from curiosity first.
By the way, "You go over it pretty quickly...and next...,hmmm.... then what about now? I mean, your latest love? Haha....
"native speakers tend only to read the first and last few letters of each word." →I wish I could read English books that way!

Hi David
Regarding this week’s topic, I felt sorry for her when I heard that her husband had been arrested for drug use. But a few days after her disappearance, in reversal she was suspected of drug abuse and she ended up being arrested for it. The news came as a bit of shock and now I am really sorry for her son.
>I was very disappointed when she got married,
I know what you mean because I was disappointed when my favourite actor got married.
>native speakers tend only to read the first and last few letters of each word.
That is interesting because I read English sentence like that, but it doesn’t help. Reading English still takes time for me. To make things worse, that’s the reason I am bad at spelling. I need more pay attention to spelling.
Hi Maki
Thank you for your kind words.
Yesterday morning I did not notice the earthquake because I was very tired on Monday, so I slept like a log.
Good night and sleep tight

All,
Actually I was not surprised when I heard the news of SAKAI Noriko's drug use because I have not seen her TV drama and I have not had particular interests of her (sorry). To use drug is illegal except for medial use. As for this topic, I have no idea to discuss any more but in a perspective of English learning that David mentioned, even today, watching TV all day is one of good way to brush up listening skill, isn't it? Needless to say, we need to have intention. So, How have you been learning English, everyone? shadowing is very effective and also posting comments to this blog is very effective. Any idea?

Hi Ash,
Thanks.
Yes, actually I read a book concerning drug use and drug addicts a couple years ago.
It's really difficult to get rid of your addicts once you start doing drugs. It's the scary fact, isn't it?
Hi Maki,
Thank you! I just have a look at the google logo .
It was nice.
Have a good day,

Hi everyone!
Loooooong time no see! Remember me, Tomo? I’m Pink NY. What’s going on in Japan? I’ve been checking Japanese news since Manabu Oshio got busted using illegal drugs. I hate to say this, but it was predictable. Sorry for his fans! Right after he got caught, Noripi, somehow, disappeared. A lot of people thought since she was shocked and felt guilty about what her husband did, she vanished but that was far from the truth. While she was gone, I was really worried about her, especially her ten year-old son. Then what happened to her? It turned out that she was using drugs, too!! What an idiot!! She finally turned herself in, but it was disgraceful enough, and she already made a big scene!! I was really disappointed with her. She should’ve been a role model as one of the celebrities in Japan. This news is very depressing. When I lived in Japan, I watched her TV dramas a lot. My favorite was “HITOSTU YANE NO SHITA DE”. Is the title correct? My memory is kind of a blur. Anyway, she was so innocent in the drama. I don’t want to say that a lot of celebrities in Japan still might use drugs, but this kind of thing has happened. I’m compelled to feel shady about Japanese show business. Using drugs is NOT cool, whatever excuse you have for using them. It’s SOOOOO WRONG to use them. It’s ridiculously wasting your time and money, that’s for sure. I’m 100% convinced drugs will ruin your life.
