Nao's Challenge

Hi Team,

Maki - glad to hear you had fun in Taiwan. I used to have a Taiwanese girlfriend (a long time ago!), and I went there to visit her once. I loved it, and I hope to go back there someday.

As for your questions, "I never thought I would go there" is probably what you want to say, and with motorbikes, we don't use the word 'tandem'. (A tandem is a bicycle made for two people.) With motorbikes, we say 'ride pillion', or just 'ride on the back of a motorcycle'. I'm not sure about American English, but that's how we would say it in Britain.

Anyway, Nao is going to start her challenge this week, so let me explain what we are going to do...

As you have seen, many of the regulars on this blog have developed really high-level writing skills just from studying what other people wrote and reading my corrections. Actually, I learnt to write Japanese by asking a friend to correct things I had written and then comparing her version with mine.

I am interested to know how much progress one person can make if she tries three or four times a week to write things that have some real connection to her life and then has them corrected by a native speaker, so that is what I am going to do with Nao. I have also sent her a copy of the textbook version of 英語じょうずになる辞典, so when she makes a mistake that is explained in that book, I will write the keyword she needs to check in BLOCK CAPITALS.

The reason I asked Nao is that she is still quite new to the blog, so she has not had as much time as some of the older regulars to improve. I needed someone who is still not very confident, but who is prepared to write a lot. Nao agreed to help me, so I hope you will all encourage her. Of course, you will all be able to see both her writing and my corrections, so I hope it will be useful for other people as well. The most interesting thing for me is to find out how her English changes over the course of four weeks.

While we are doing Nao's experiment, I will still be doing regular entries, and I will also still do corrections of regular comments on Fridays, so feel free to write about whatever you want even if it has nothing to do with what Nao is writing. I have also told her that she should feel free to write about anything she wants, even if it is unconnected with that week's topic. Nao is going to do one piece of writing tomorrow or Wednesday that she will just send to me by email, and after we are sure that she can understand my feedback system, she will do her first entry on the blog later this week. I think it is going to be very interesting, so please follow her progress.

Hi David,
Thank you for your help! "Ride pillion"? The word "pillion" is new to me. Now I understand that using "tandem" for a bike is Japanese English. The other question isn't the one which you mentioned, but I'm sure that my sentence didn't express my idea. Maybe I should write, " I never think that I will drive a car in Taipei."

The new project with Nao is very interesting! I'm sure that it is also useful for us. I'm looking forwward to seeing how it's going on.

Nao - I think this is a big challenge, but also a big chance for you. You are taking one-on-one lessons from David for four weeks. Lucky you! I know it's not that easy to keep writing in English for a long time because it was really difficult for me to express myself in English when I joined the blog, but I'm sure you will learn a lot and improve your English with this challenge. Anyway, as Maki said, we are all behind you, so enjoy your challenge;-) Good luck!!

Maki - I just did. I didn't know that today is Confucius' birthday! By the way, I didn't know the word 'pillion', either. Thanks to you, I learned how to way ‘futarinori’ in English;-)

Hi everyone,
I'm back from Shkoku Henro trip. I visited 9 temples and one of them, Yata temple, is said to be the sacred place same as 'Osore zan' in Aomori.
I had to climb up, up, and up 600 stairs to get there. It was a long way. I walked a lot this time, but my legs don't hurt yet, hmmm...
By the way, on the way to Shikoku, I saw people running together on huge bikes and some of them were riding pillion. I've never seen such a scene! It was amazing.

Hi everyone,
The day before yesterday, I was asked to have a small concert at a kindergarten next month. Of course I took the request on. I must sing with talk for an hour at the concert, but I have only a month until it. Yesterday, I chose lots of songs as I consulted with an accompanist. I have to memorize these songs in just a month! The accompanist said "It is hard for you to do it in just a month...., and me too!" I have to practice a lot, so now is not the time to write English here!(笑) I go back to practicing.

As I couldn’t read what was said in Japanese while some of the members were discussing about this, I’d like to know what does the sentence ‘I never thought I would drive a car in Taiwan’ really mean.
When I first saw the sentence I thought that meant ‘I drove a car in Taiwan although I hadn’t thought I would have’ but that was wrong wasn’t that? (Because Maki didn’t drive.) So does the sentence mean ‘I don’t think I will drive in Taiwan’ or ‘I have never thought I would drive a car in Taiwan’?

This is first comment for a new project.
I wrote about "my introduction".


I'm Nao.I live in the southern Osaka and have been there since I was born.
There are many typical Osakajin in my hometown,so all my friends are very funny.
I think I'm also funny. By the way most Osakajin want to be said "You're funny" as well as "You're cool"
I think "funny" is a prising word for Osakajin.Of course It's for me.

I went to university in Kyoto.My major is philosophy.It's very interesting subject for me.
I like to think about what I am or what the truth is.It's very difficult to find the answer.
I think those questions are eternal questions.

Now I work at the specialized trading company.Many machines and tools are sold in my company.
My company is also a typical Osaka's company.When I work there,I can hear "Maido".
"Maido" is a normally greeting.It's not joking.

One of my hobbies is reading books.I always read a book in the train.
Authors I love are Dazai Osamu,Nkajima Atsushi,Isaka Kotaro and Hagio Moto and so on.
My heart is moved by their works.I can see other world by reading them.It's so nice.

Another hobby is eating and drinking with my friend.I feel the happiest when I eat good dishes with my friend.
It the perfect time,so I eat too much.I go on a diet all the time.

The other my hobby is listening to music and watching something artistic.
I like "johnnys" as you know.I especially like Kinki Kids,so often listen to their music and go to their concert.
It also makes me happy.

I'm interested in English very much!I want to improve my English.I'll study hard from now on.

Hi Nao,
Thanks for you introduction. I was surprised to know we actually have a lot in common. I’m from southern Osaka too. I know what you mean about being funny. I don’t think I’m particularly funny (unfortunately!) but I think having a sense of humor and/or individuality in one way or another is very important for Osaka people. Even the word “weird” could be a compliment. I worked at a local supermarket chain, so I often heard “maido” too. Yeah, I know what it’s like :-)

Hi Nao,
Yes, you don't hear "maido" in daily life. It's merchants' language. I guess the custom remains strong in some business fields like retailing and trading.

I was about to ask the some question to David, because I was the one who mistook Maki’s sentence and I explained why I mistook the sentence in Japanese on last entry.
Here are the sentences that David corrected.
1) “I never thought I would go there”
2) “I never thought I would drive a car in Taipei”
Both of them are the same type of sentence, right? But the fact was different.
As for the first one, the fact was Maki went there (Taiwan)
But second one, the fact was Maki did not drive a car in Taipei (right? Maki). That’s why I got confused, “I never thought …” can be used both ways? But I found out from David’s reply to Michelle that David also thought that Maki drove a car in Taipei, right?

I'm writing this in a train from my cellphone. I was wondering if it's better to use the present tense, like "I never think that I will drive a car in Taipei." after I posted my last comment, but I couldn't access to the blog.
I understand what you mean, but I wonder if I can use "I never thought that I would drive a car." when I thought I didn't want to drive at that time, but I'm not sure about that in the future.

As for the discussion about "I never thought.." thing, I actually understood what Maki wanted to say when I read her first comment. She was talking about the traffic in Taipei, and she said that she saw a lot of motorbikes and people riding pillion there, so I thought she had thought it was dangerous to drive a car there.(Right, Maki?)

As Amo and Gussan said, if you say "I never thought I would drive a car in Taiwan", I think people would think you did drive there. If I were Maki, I would say...

1. I didn't think I want to drive a car in Taiwan.

2. I thought I would never try to drive a car in Taiwan.(←My first idea was “I thought, "I will never try to drive a car in Taiwan"”, and I rephrased it using reported speech.)

I'm not sure if the second one sounds natural or not because there is a negative in the sub-clause, and I know English speakers usually bring it to the beginning. Hmm, it's sometimes really difficult to think about tenses and forms, isn't it?

Anyway, David, here is Maki's first version. Would you check it again and give us your answer?

『One thing I was very surprised is that there were a lot of moter bikes on the road, and people ride double on them. I never thought that I drive a car in Taipei!』

Can I join the discussion " I never thought.." thing?
When I first read Maki's comment, I understood what she meant to say because she had explained the situation, but if you read only"I never thought I would drive a car in Taiwan", as members said, it usually implies"actually I drove a car". I'm wondering if this sentence implies two meanings or not; "she drove a car" and " she didn't drive a car".
If I were Maki, I would say....

1. I never thought about driving a car in Taiwan.
2. I never thought about wanting to drive a car in Taiwan. （ I tried adding the meaning 'want to'.)
3. I had no idea that I tried to drive a car in Taiwan.
I'm not sure these three sentences are correct or not.

Anyway, it's very difficult and tricky to understand "I never thought..", right?

Hi everyone,

Now I installed a software on my PC and I can read Japanese!! (Still can’t type Japanese though.) Anyway, I just wanted to bring this up to your attention that the meaning of the Japanese sentence. I think ‘Taiwan de kuruma o unten shiyou to wa keshite omowanakatta’ could mean several different things.

1, Taiwan ni ikumae ni Taiwan de kuruma o unten shiyou to wa omowanakatt. (kedo untenshita)
2, Taiwan ni irutoki ni Taiwan de kuruma o unten shiyou to wa omowanakatta
3, Taiwan ni iku ka ikanai ka/ itta ka ikanakatta ka ni kakawarazu, kako ni watashi wa Taiwan de kuruma o unten shiyou to omotta koto ga nai. ( There’s a possibility that ‘ima wa unten shiyou to omou’.) It’s like ‘Soremade Taiwan de unten shiyou to omotta koto wa nakatta kedo ima wa unten shiyou to omou.

- Compare this:
4, Taiwan de kuruma o unten shiyou to wa keshite omowanai. This means you don’t think you will drive in Taiwan no matter if you go/went to Taiwan or not.

I need David’s help here but I’ll try!!

In English the idea of time or tense is different to the one in Japanese as you know. So I think you choose different tense depends on what you mean. So each sentence above could be:

1, I didn’t think/never thought I would drive in Taiwan. (But I drove.)
or I hadn’t thought I would drive in Taiwan before I went there but I drove.
2, I didn’t want to drive in Taiwan while I was there. (because …)
3, I didn’t think/never thought I would drive in Taiwan before/until (certain time e.g. now) but I think I will.
4, I don’t think I will drive in Taiwan. / I don’t want to drive in Taiwan.

Gee, it took me too long to type this all so I’d better go now.

I thought about Maki’s question too. This is a tough one! I tried to come up with as many ideas as I could.

1. I would never drive in Taipei. (It seems to me this still works.)
2. I thought I would never drive in Taipei. (But in this case, I think it could mean she ended up driving, so I would say as Tomo said …)
2”. I thought to myself, “I will never drive in Taipei.”
3. I didn’t feel like driving in Taipei.
4. There was no way I would drive in Taipei.

Dear all,

I think the closest to what Maki wanted to say is Lily's number 2. Michelle's sentences are all correct, but only 2 and 4 fit with what Maki wanted to say (I think!)

Actually, the translation of 「…と思った」 is something that I wanted to put in my book, but I wasn't sure exactly how to explain it. In many cases when Japanese uses this expression, the English translation would not include the verb 'think'. If you don't mind, Lily, I'm going to use your suggestion of "I thought to myself, ..." and put it in the next version of the book. Thanks for solving something that's been bothering me for years!

Last night, I hesitated to post the comment to Maki because Maki said that “I never thought …” expresses what she wanted to say, so I thought that my comment might offend her feeling. I went to Taipei on business in February.
I had good experience in three days. Chinese English, excellent foods, dangerous freeway, tons of bikes, and so on.
Taiwanese have good dynamic vision acuity.

Fried sticky tofu(臭豆腐) that I ate in Taiwanese night market was very nice. (except for nice smell)

By the way I read a book about joke,and I knew a lot of typical images of Japanese,American and Chinese and so on. It was very interesting,so I want to introduce a joke to members.
A rich man said,"If somebody let me see a blue giraffe,I'll give a lot of money."And people of each county acted as follows.The British discussed if there is a blue giraffe.The German investigated in the library if there is a blue giraffe.American searched it by their army.Japanese made a blue giraffe to study all the time.Chinese bought a blue paint.

I know what you mean. I don’t usually think about Japanese phrases when I speak/write in English because it’s just too confusing!! So this discussion we’ve had was a good experience for me to think about translation. I’m not sure about you but I found the idea of time/tense in English was very different to Japanese one. Also especially when you want to explain ‘If’ situation verbs take different tense! (I’m not very familiar with grammar word and can’t say exactly what it is but hope you know what I’m getting at!) So it took me for a while to understand how it works. I’ll just give some examples FYI.

I would have helped you if you had told me you needed one/my help.
I had bought a Christmas present before the sale started.
We hadn’t met for years until then.
You wouldn’t say that if you knew how I feel. (Is that right?)
The movie will have finished by the time you get there.
And so on.

Anyway, it would be a good fun if we could see some examples of Japanese ‘to omotta’ sentence that English doesn’t use ‘think’ sometime!!

Hi Michelle,
Exactly. Tense is one of the most difficult things in English grammar. In daily conversation, you can go without difficult stuff most of the time, but I guess you bump into tough questions, living in an English speaking country. When you tell a story, for example, it gets really complicated sometimes, doesn’t it? I’ve written a few short stories for fun, and that was when it really hit me. I can deal with most ordinary tense stuff given enough time, but there are some things that happen in story writing… Anyway, tense sometimes drives me crazy.

As for translation, I translate English into Japanese for TV shows and other visual media. It’s really challenging but also interesting. I guess the trick is, whether English into Japanese or the other way around, not to “translate” in a literal sense. You just digest what they want to say and express it in your own words. I think that’s the most difficult part because you can’t put out what you don’t have. You already have great English skills, which is essential to be a translator, so it might be fun to try it :-)

In my understanding, Japanese are said to be good at making or creating new things, so as a stereo type of Japanese, this expression is used.
Actually, Japan has a reputation as a country that is good at creating or making thing like robots or crafts or other things.

I definitely agree with you about ‘you can’t put out what you don’t have’. I quite often feel I can say what I can say, no more than that :s!! Besides, I’m rather quiet and reserved so talking to people it self is not my best thing. Hmm.
Writing is a little bit different to talking, isn’t it? I might need to write more and get my writing corrected or read a lot to improve my English. ‘You just digest what they want to say and express it in your own words.’ This would be a great tip. When I come across Japanese sentence or expression I want to explain in English, I’ll try to digest it and put English words/idea together!
