Back from Hokkaido (again!)
Hi team,
Sorry I didn't have any time to comment over the weekend. I just got back from Hokkaido last night. The presentation went very well, but my lower back started really hurting on Friday night, and I had real difficulty moving around on Saturday. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to do the presentation, but I went to a chiropractor on Saturday evening and took lots of painkillers, and it wasn't too bad on Sunday. I'm feeling a bit better now, but it's still not right, so I'm going to go to see a doctor tomorrow morning.
I can't remember whether I told you or not, but I am flying back to the UK on Sunday, so I'm a bit worried about sitting in a small seat for such a long time. Anyway, I will ask the doctor to give me lots of painkillers!
A lot of my friends had told me that it was really cold in Hokkaido now, but it turned out to be really warm all weekend, so I ended up taking far more clothes than I needed. The autumn leaves were in full colour, so it was nice to be there for that. Unfortunately, however, I couldn' see as much as a I wanted to because of my back.
I noticed that you were talking about the translation of 部下 in the last entry. 'Subordinate' is the right word, but it sounds very formal. I would just say 'the people who work for him' or 'the people in his department'.
I don't have any special topics for this week, but I will do one more entry before I leave for the UK. Nao, I will give you my feedback on your tenth entry as a comment under this thread.
Bye for now,
David

Hi David,
Glad to hear that your presentation went very well, but I'm sorry to hear about your back.. Are you OK?
Thank you for your help with my question about the translation of 部下. 'The people who work for him' and 'the people in his department', they were much easier than I had thought, but I never thought of these translations even though I knew all the words..
Anyway, I hope your back gets better before you go back to the UK. Take care!
See you soon,
Tomo

I'm glad to know that your presentation went very well, but I'm really sorry to hear about your back.
Hope you feel better before your trip to the UK.
It sounds that you brought a big bag for your all clothes with you. Maybe you should ask me!;-)
It's so nice to hear that you had a chance to see autumn leaves in Sapporo.
Take good care of yourself!
Talk to you later,

Hi David and everyone
I hope everyone is doing fine. I have not written a comment for a while because I was out of Japan from Wednesday to Sunday. I went to Manila and Boracay in Philippine as a company trip. I work for a Philippine company, so if I did not work for this company, I would never visit to Philippine. As you may know, I am from Okinawa so I am not interested in a resort like a beautiful beach or something like that very much, but it was nicer than I had expected. It was raining when we arrived at Manila airport, so I was a bit disappointed because I thought the weather was going to be like that during our stay. Fortunately, we only had a rain on the first day and on our way to Boracay, so I enjoyed the sunshine on a beautiful beach. I rode on a glass bottom boat, so I was able to see a lot of fish. The funny thing was everyone looked for clownfish, it seemed really like everyone was FINDING NEMO. I am not good at swimming but I enjoyed snorkeling because I put on a life jacket. The best thing in there for me was a massage. I went for the massage three times even I was in there only four nights. If I take the same treatment in Japan, it would cost me a lot. By the way, I was not feeling well when I got back from Philippine on Sunday night, but I went to work yesterday. Actually, I ended up taking day off today due to a fever, so I spent all the time in bed today. My fever went down, so I am ok now.
Hi David
I am sorry to hear about your back, I hope it will get better before you off to the UK.

Tomo, David and everyone,
As David said ‘subordinate’ sounds rather formal and I think I’ve come across this word mostly in writing or in formal speech.
I’m just saying this below because I think the idea of ‘buka’ is not exactly the same here in Australia and that might be interesting for some of you.
The relationship between people above you and below you at work seems to be more casual in a way here. Of course there are certain unwritten rules about attitude or manner but I think many bosses are less bossy than ones in Japan! lol
Although the sentences 'the people who work for him' or 'the people in his department' fit the sentence which you (Tomo) wanted to say perfectly, I have a feeling that ‘buka’ in English can be different words depending on who you are addressing to and the place you work. So I don’t really hear people around me say 'the people who work for him' here. That’s probably because there’s one manager here and others have different positions but no one really works for him! We have support officers, officers, senior staff, team leader, project leader below the manager and above him is a director general (I think). So people at my work place tend to use just their names or position names to call people in his division or group or even just say guys, ladies or people. Just in case, don’t use ‘guys’ or ‘girls’ in ‘formal formal’ situations! It’ll make you look like a total shocker!!

Hi David and everyone,
It’s too bad you are suffering low back pain before your long flight. If any painkillers or injections don’t work well, please give it a try as a survival treatment; do you have some refreshing sports rub lotion(or cream) and a bottle of peppermint oil? If you have, just drop 20 drops(usually 2 or 3 drops are enough) of peppermint oil into some rub lotion and mix them well, then rub this mixture on your painful back. It is safe and really works. If you have a heat pack, it is also good. Finally, please fly first or business class!

Hi everyone,
I haven't written for a while but I have been reading.
I hope everyone is doing fine.
Hi David,
Are you O.K, your back?
Please take care.
So,
I had dream last night.
Funny thing is, all dream had mixed up in my dream.
In the real world,I used to join some Brass band team and theatical group.
In addition, I used to ski.
I guess, that was why I had dream last night.
I visited the Brass band team wearing ski shoes in my dream.
The Brass band team had been practicing their music when I visited them.
All most of member had changed since I used to do it.
I asked to them."Why are you practicing very hard?"
He said, "because we have to visit America as a music trip".
Wow, sound great!
They seems to have confident about their music.
I had proud them.
For some reason I performed with my theatical member in front of music group.
I did tap-dance with ski shose.
Get real! I can't believe that.
I don't dance in real world.
But in the dream, everyone gave me clap hands.
It was funny.
This is my recent funny story.

Hi amo,
You seemed to have a great time in Philippine, didn't you?
You went there as a company trip? I'm jealous of you! Actually, when I heard from you that you were going to join a company trip from Wednesday to Sunday, I was wondering where you were going, and I thought you must have gone abroad!
Three times massage sound relaxing and refreshing. Anyway, you'll have a weekend just in two days.
Hi Michelle,
Your story about '部下’is interesting, and it reminds me of another idea'先輩'and '後輩’ that is explained in David's book(P.216) and '同期’.
It is very difficult to explain the word for these concepts, right? I also remember one chapter from"Outliers". It is about "Power Distance", and according to the chapter, it is concerned with attitudes toward hierarchy. When some problem would occur, less powerful members of organizations or company tend to hesitate to say their ideas. I'm not sure about the recent situation at the company , but this is often the case in our relationship.
Hi kazu,
Your dream is very interesting. Was that what you had been wanting?(Just kidding!)
David,
How's your back?

Hi David,
How's your back? Did you see a doctor yesterday? I hope you are feeling better today.
Hi amo,
Glad to hear that you had a great time in Philippine! But you had a fever after the trip? That's too bad.. How are you feeling today?
By the way, you tried snorkeling in Philippine? That's nice! I'd love to try scuba diving in a beautiful location someday!
Hi Michelle,
Thanks for you comment! “but no one really works for him!” I laughed when I read this line.(lol) Actually, I was wondering if they had a relationship between ‘joushi’ and ’buka’ like the one in Japan in Western countries. As Anne mentioned, I also learned that they don't have the idea of ‘senpai’ and ‘kouhai’ and there is no exact translation for these words in English. I first thought that the same might be true for the idea of ‘joushi’ and ’buka’, but they have the word 'boss' that expresses ‘joushi’, so I was not sure about that. After reading David's version and your comments, I thought it would be better to forget about the word ‘buka’.
Anyway, your story was very interesting. I wanted to know what they do in everyday situations, so thanks for sharing:)
See you soon,
Tomo
PS Kazu - That's a funny dream!

Hi David and everyone
Here is my eleventh entry.
I work at a specialized trading company now as I mentioned in a previous comment. I belong to the finance department, so I'm always busy in October because of interim period. I worked hard this month, and I managed to get the job done!I'm relaxed within myself now.
It's about time for me to escape,so I decided to go to Disney Resort. The last five years in a row, I've gone to Disney resort. I'm a big Disney fan. It is like a dream world for me.Of course, I don't like to stand in lines, and I think the fees are high, but I want to go there many times.I think there are a lot of repeat visitors like me.
There are many amusing attractions in Disent resort. That's the reason that I love Diseny resort. Most attractions are very fantastic.I especially like Winnie-the-Pooh attraction because Winnie-the-Pooh is very cute.Did you try it?If you don't try it,you should try it.Another reason is that Disney has many cute characters.I like Mickey Mouse the best of all.Every time I go to Disney Land, I go to see him.If you go to the attraction called "Meet Mickey",you are able to see him. When I went to see him last year,he huged and kissed me!I was really happy. The other reason is that many good staff welcome me. They are very kind, and their show is wonderful.I think hospitality in Japan is good, but hospitality in Diseny resort is great.
I managed to get the ticket to go to Disney resort!I'm going there next month.Right now the global economy isn't so good, but it was difficult for me to get the ticket.Anyway, I'm looking forward to Disney resort.I want to ride the new attraction.
P.S.
I don't post my new entry until David comes back, but I keep learning English:)

What I really wanted to remember usage were "belong to something".
When I wrote last entry I couldn't come up with that usage.
But when I saw your entry it came up to me.
I should have said that I used to belong to some Brass band team.
Thank you Nao.

Hi everyone,
I'm glad to report that my back is a lot better now, but I still have a horrible cold. I'm taking lots of medicine, though, so I should be fine for the weekend.
Hi Nao,
Here is my feedback on your latest entry.
I work at a specialized trading company now as I mentioned in a previous comment. I belong to the finance department, so I'm always busy in October because of interim period.
(Okay, but I don't understand 'interim period'.)
I worked hard this month, and I managed to get the job done!I'm relaxed within myself now.

There are many amusing attractions in Disent resort. That's the reason that I love Diseny resort.
(That's why I love it.)
Most attractions are very fantastic.
(Most of the attractions are fantastic.) (('Fantastic' already includes the idea of 'very'.))
I especially like Winnie-the-Pooh attraction because Winnie-the-Pooh is very cute.
(Okay, but 'the' Winnie-the-Pooh attraction.)
Did you try it?If you don't try it,you should try it.
(Have you ever tried it? If you haven't, you should give it a go.)
Another reason is that Disney has many cute characters.

I like Mickey Mouse the best of all.Every time I go to Disney Land, I go to see him.

(Okay, but just 'you can see him'.)
When I went to see him last year,he huged and kissed me!I was really happy.

Hi David,
I am not a nitpicker but I am afraid that there is something wrong about your profile written in Japanese on this web page.
I believe you are an associate professor.
In Japan, we have been saying '准教授' since Apr. 2007. '助教授'(= assistant professor) is already obsolete. However, we can see it in the description.
So, it need to be corrected some day in the future.

Today's lunch time I microwaved a boiled egg.
Needless to say, it wasn't only one.
There were some foods in it.
After microwaved I was going to pick it up and then it exploded.

Some part of eggs were on my face.

Hi David and everyone
Here is my tenth entry.
The previous story was scary, but this story isn't scary,so please relax and read it.
(Okay)
I was interested in 'How to Win Friends and Influence People' by Dale Carnegie,so I stood and read in a bookstore.
(I read it standing up in a bookstore.)
(The bookstore is great because there are chairs to read books.Besides,we are allowed to read with something to drink.)
(Besides, they let you drink while you read.) YOU
To cut a long story short, like David I think it is a fantastic book.
(Okay.)
I recommended it for my friend soon.
(I recommended it to my friend immediately.) SOON
This book makes us happy.
(makes you happy) YOU
In other words, we know why Carnegie was successful.(Way to succeed is written in the book.)
(The book tells you why Carnegie himself was successful.)
After I read it,I think that to enhance communication skills is very important, and I think it helps if I have a good imagination.
(After I read it, I realized the importance of enhancing your communication skills, and I think it helps if you have a good imagination.)
For example,Carnegie said taht you should keep smiling.
(Okay.)
It means that smiles give people a great impression, and it is advantageous to give a good impression in everything.
(Okay.)
It is easy to get an understanding of the meaning, but it isn't easy to find the key factor to give a good impression.
(I don't really understand the second part of the sentence.)
I'm respect his insight.
(I respect his insight.)
I read the Japanese version.but I want to read the English version some day!
(Okay, but 'someday'.)
By the way,I go out for dinner and drinks with my bosses today.
(I'm going out for dinner and drinks with my bosses today.)
Because personnel are reshuffled,a new guy come.
(Because people have been reshuffled, a new guy has arrived.)
Today is a welcome party for him.I like to eat,and I also like to drink,so I'm looking forward to the party.
(Okay.)
I'm going to the Spanish restaurant.
('a' Spanish restaurant - we don't know which one you are talking about.)
I love Spanish food,and I particularly love a paellea.I'm eating a paellea today!
(no 'a' before 'paella' because you are making a general statement.)
Look forward to reading your next entry.
