My Visit to the UK
Hi team,
Sorry this posting is a bit late, but I have been working all day on making changes to my thesis. The biggest problem is that the file is so big now that the computer takes ages to actually do anything. I think one of the worst feelings in the world is the one you get when you see the message "Word has experienced an unexpected error and been forced to shut down." That happened to me just once today, but the computer had backed up the file, so I was able to recover the document without having to go back and redo all the changes I had made since the last save. Anyway, I should be finished in the next couple of weeks, so I am looking forward to that day.
As you know, the reason I went back to the UK was to do my interview, but I was able to take a longer break because my visit coincided with the school festival at Nanzan, so there were no classes. After my interview was over, I spent the rest of the week relaxing at my parents' house, catching up with old friends, and shopping. I love going back to the UK now because the yen is so strong (and the pound so weak) that I feel like a millionaire! When I flew to the UK, my suitcase weighed about 13 or 14 kilos. When I came back, it weighed 21.9 kilos! My wallet felt a lot lighter, though...
Every time I go back home, I experience the same kind of culture shock. The thing that hits me hardest is the number of cars and how crowded the roads are. The police in Britain have a ridiculous system now whereby any major accident on a motorway (like a 高速道路)is treated as a crime scene, and no one is allowed to disturb it. This means that if there is a big crash, the police just stop all the traffic and completely close the road until it has been cleared up. Of course, there is no way for drivers to go back or get off the motorway, so people end up stuck in huge traffic jams for hours. My dad said he knows people that have had to wait in their car for eight hours because of accidents. I also read an article in a magazine that said drivers in London now have a system for going to the toilet during traffic jams on the M25 (the motorway that runs around London). It said that everyone now knows the system because traffic jams are such a common occurrence - men to the right, women to the left. Actually, that road is so bad that a singer called Chris Rea wrote a song about it - the title of the song is "The Road to Hell"!
While I was staying at my parents' house, I also went for a ride with my dad in one of the huge trucks he drives as a part-time job. These are the biggest trucks on the road. In Japan, you would need a 牽引 licence to drive one. I had never been in a truck that big before, and I was amazed at how high you sit in the driver's cab. This actually makes it easier to drive in some ways than a car because you can see absolutely everything that is happening ahead of you. I've decided that I want to learn how to drive a truck as well, so I might go back to the UK to get my licence next year.
I did lots of other things while I was back in the UK, but I think this entry will get very long if I tell you about all of them, so I will save the other stories for next time.
Bye for now,
David

Hi David,
Glad to hear that you were able to recover the document. “I think one of the worst feelings in the world is the one you get when you see the message "Word has experienced an unexpected error and been forced to shut down." ” I understand this even though I seldom use Word. That must be a terrible feeling if you lost a document or something that you have worked hard for a long time.
It sounds like you had a nice relaxing break in the UK and bought a lot of things! What did you get? If you can feel like a millionaire, I'd love to go there!
I want to write more, but I'm too sleepy to do it, sorry. I'll make another comment later.
Good night,
Tomo
PS Anne, I might be wrong, but I thought it was just a typo, so I read it as 'the'.

Hi Tomo,
Thank you ! I should be more flexible. Anyway, I enjoyed checking "tjhe" on the web, and surprisingly I found it! The system is troublesome, and I did a good guess, right? hahhaha...
David, please forget what I asked you.

Sorry, that was a typo. I have corrected it now. I wrote the entry late last night after a full day of working on my thesis, so my brain was a bit fried.
I also forgot to say 'hi' to Kiki - nice to have you back with us - and I forgot to tell Nao that if you want to do some more writing, I will have time to correct it later this week. We originally planned to do four weeks, and we have done three, so let's do two or three more writings.
Bye for now,

Hi David,
8 hours?? I can't imagine waiting in a traffic jam for such a long time! When I read this line "- men to the right, women to the left", I thought it was an expression that has a special meaning, but does it mean that men go to the right side of the road and women go to the left side of the road to do the business?? I guess there are no toilets there, so...
I think it would be a better idea to have a portable and disposable toilet in your car when you drive on a motorway in the UK. When my children were just out of diapers and we went for a long ride, I always kept some in my car just in case. They were for kids, but I think there are also for adults now.
By the way, are you going to get your truck licence in the UK? If you have it, can you drive a truck in Japan as well?
Anyway, I'm looking forward to your other stories!
See you soon,
Tomo
PS Anne, you are welcome:) I sometimes make the same kind of typo when I'm writing in English because ' j ' is just next to ' h ', but you are a good guesser!
PPS David, I didn't know the word 'fried' has a meaning of 'exhausted'. That's interesting!

Hi David,
I'm relieved to hear that you were able to recover the document without losing anything. Once I've lost everything which I wrote for my work and my mind went blank at that time. Anyway, "that day" for you is just around corner!;-)
Glad that you had a nice relaxing time in the UK and you enjoyed shopping as well. I'm curious what you bought, as your suitcase gained about 8 kilos!
It sounds really tiring to wait in a car for eight hours, even though it's because of accidents. Maybe waiting for such a long time in Japan is for really BIG ones, I guess. "The Road to Hell"?! Oh, well...
Hi Anne,
All stars are lined up at the Google logo today!
Because today is the 40th Anniversary, as you know.;-)

Hi David,
Grad to hear that you had a great time in the UK. You enjoyed shopping, didn't you? What did you get? When I went to Hawaii this spring, the yen was strong, so I really enjoyed shopping. When I flew there, I could pick up my suitcase in one hand, but when I came back, I had to pick up it in both hands!
By the way, your dad knows people that have had to wait in their car for eight hours because of accidents? Eight hours!? That's terrible! Your story reminded me of the day when my town was hit by heavy snow. Luckily, I was in my house at that day, but my friend was stuck in a traffic jam by heavy snow. At that day, it was starting to snow in the morning, and it was getting heavier. My friend had to drive home in heavy snow. She usually get to home in 30 minutes, but on that day, she got to home in 5 hours!
Hi everyone,
The other day, I bought "地デジTV" and "Blu-ray Disc recorder". My old TV was "テレビデオ", so it was very old, and the picture was not good, but now, the picture of the new TV is so clear and beautiful!

Here is my twelfth entry.
November 7th is my birthday,so my friends celebrated my birthday. One of my friends invited me to dinner. We talked and ate together. After eating, she gave me a present. It was a cute massaging tools.'Please relax'said she.I was happy to hear that. Now I use the massaging tools. It's so nice.I often massage my sholders with the tools.
I bought a new coat as my birthday present. It was so cute,so I wear the coat everyday. It's fun for me to go out because I wear the coat.My wallet felt a lot lighter, but I was happy.
I'm going to Disney resort this weekend. My trip is coming soon!Of course,I'm going to wear the new coat! I'm the happiest now.
By the way,do you know 'facebook'?I didn't know untill my friend told me.Facebook is a social utility that connects friends like mixi in Japan.Mixi is famous in Japan, but facebook is famous all over the world,so we also connect a lot of foreigners. It's interesting for me to communicate with members of facebook, and it's fun for me to see a lot of pictures. For example,I saw a lot of Halloween pictures.(My friends dressed for Halloween in Japan.Halloween has recently gotten popular in Japan, haven't it?)The costumes for Halloween were amazing!I want to try that someday. If I try that,I will dress as a witch for Halloween. If you try, what costumes do you want to dress? Please tell me.Anyway,I'm interested in facebook now.To tell the truth,I don't know how to use very much, but I was able to communicate on the facebook,so I talked with my friend's sister in England. That's fantastic.Facebook is the door to communicate with people around the world for me. I cheched about facebook before I wrote this entry, and I knew the new word.It is ' facebook generation'.It means the generation that need mobile phones at any time.I think a lot of people need mobile phones at any time in Japan. What do you think?I'm surprised that mobile phones have spread the most rapidly.I couldn't image that, and I can't image the future of mobile phones.
Is my Engkish natural?I'm worried about it...I should study English much harder.

Hi everyone,
Maki, I also checked the logo yesterday;-) It was nice!
Chiyo, nice to from you again! How have you been?
Green, it sounds like you bought a lot of things in LA!
Amica, you bought a Blu-ray Disc recorder? Wow! Is there a big difference between Blu-ray and DVD? I know we are in the digital world, but everything changes so quickly that I can't keep up! Anyway, enjoy watching TV with beautiful picture quality;-)
Nao, happy belated birthday!! It sounds like you got a nice present for your birthday. By the way, are you going to Disney resort this weekend? Have a wonderful time and enjoy the Christmas lights there;-)
I've got to cook dinner!
See you soon,

Hi David and Tomo,
Do iPod have an direct wireless access to the Net ? I didn't know about that. I thought iPod were just music players. I guess you may be able to make a phone call with iPod in the near future.
In the IT gadget area, we are losing the boarders among cell phones, computers, PDA, TV and music players.
However, I have a feeling that I should stay away from the state-of-the-arts. They have so many functions that I often get confused.

Hi Tomo,
I can only use the ipod if there is wireless network, like in my house, a hotel, or the airport.
Hi Appoh, the iPod touch with a phone facility is called the iPhone, and it's already here!
Hi Nao,
Here is my feedback.
November 7th is my birthday,so my friends celebrated my birthday.
(It's not good to repeat words, so how about "November 7th is my birthday, and I celebrated it with my friends.")
One of my friends invited me to dinner. We talked and ate together.
(One of my friends took me out to dinner.) (('We ate together' and 'we talked' are obvious if you went out to dinner.))
After eating, she gave me a present.
(After we finished eating, she gave me a present.)
It was a cute massaging tools.'Please relax'said she.
(It was a cute massager. She said that she hoped it would help me to relax.) (('...said he/she' is not used in modern English.))
I was happy to hear that. Now I use the massaging tools.
(That made me happy. I use the massager a lot now.)
It's so nice.I often massage my sholders with the tools.
(... with it.)
I bought a new coat as my birthday present.
(Okay, but we would normally say 'as a present to myself'.)
It was so cute,so I wear the coat everyday.
(I think you are using 'cute' too much. Please read CUTE/COOL in the red book. Also read EVERYDAY.)
It's fun for me to go out because I wear the coat.
(I like going out now because I can wear the coat.)
My wallet felt a lot lighter, but I was happy.
(Okay. Glad to see you are picking up phrases from my entries!)
I'm going to Disney resort this weekend. My trip is coming soon!Of course,I'm going to wear the new coat!
(Okay.)
I'm the happiest now.
(I'm not sure what this means. Maybe "I'm really happy now"?)
By the way,do you know 'facebook'?I didn't know untill my friend told me.
(I had never heard of it until my friend told me about it.)
Facebook is a social utility that connects friends like mixi in Japan.
(I think Facebook is called a 'social networking site', or something like that!)
Mixi is famous in Japan, but facebook is famous all over the world, so we also connect a lot of foreigners.
(The second half of the sentence is strange. Read YOU in the red book.)
It's interesting for me to communicate with members of facebook, and it's fun for me to see a lot of pictures.
(Okay.)
For example,I saw a lot of Halloween pictures.(My friends dressed for Halloween in Japan.Halloween has recently gotten popular in Japan, haven't it?)
(...hasn't it?)
The costumes for Halloween were amazing!I want to try that someday. If I try that,I will dress as a witch for Halloween.
(Okay.)
If you try, what costumes do you want to dress? Please tell me.
(If you dressed up for Halloween, what costume would you wear? Please tell me.) IF/WHEN
Anyway,I'm interested in facebook now.To tell the truth,I don't know how to use very much, but I was able to communicate on the facebook,so I talked with my friend's sister in England.
(I'm really into Facebook at the moment ((NOW)). To tell the truth, I don't really know how to use it, but I was able to communicated with my friend's sister in England.)
That's fantastic.
(That was fantastic.)
Facebook is the door to communicate with people around the world for me.
(Facebook is a door to the world for me.) ((I think you are slipping back into the habit of trying to translated Japanese sentences here. Remember to stick with the English you know.))
I cheched about facebook before I wrote this entry, and I knew the new word. It is ' facebook generation'.
(I did some checking about Facebook before I wrote this, and I learned a new phrase - The Facebook Generation.)
It means the generation that need mobile phones at any time.
(This refers to the generation that cannot live without their mobile phones.)
I think a lot of people need mobile phones at any time in Japan.
(I think there are a lot of people like this in Japan.)
What do you think? I'm surprised that mobile phones have spread the most rapidly.
(... have spread so rapidly.)
I couldn't image that,and I can't image the future of mobile phones.
(I couldn't have imagined that when I was younger, and I can't imagine what will happen in the future now.)
Is my Engkish natural?I'm worried about it...I should study English much harder.
(It's okay, but I definitely get the sense that you are trying to say things that are too difficult and too complicated. Remember that the trick with writing is KIS - Keep it simple!)
Bye for now,

Hi David
It seemed that you had a wonderful time with your family and old friends, and you enjoyed shopping in the UK. That’s really nice!!
Speaking of the traffic jams in the UK that sounds awful. I do not want to drive a car in the UK (actually I don’t like to drive a car anywhere, though). My oldest sister likes driving a car, so she ended up becoming a bus driver. Even now, there are a few women bus drivers, so if you see a woman driver in Tokyo, she might be my sister.
Hi everyone
I feel a bit tired even it is a still in the middle of the weekdays. Maybe that’s because I went out both days of weekend, so I did not feel like having days off. On Saturday, I went to a hair salon, and I was not supposed to go shopping. There was an imported shoes shop on the way to the hair salon. After having my hair cut, I dropped in the shop, and I saw a nice pair of boots so I bought them. On Sunday, I went to the movies with my friends.
Hi Amica
You bought a TV and a Blu-ray Disc recorder? That’s nice. Enjoy watching TV and movies.
Hi Nao
Happy belated birthday!!!
I am happy for you that you had a good time with your friends. Speaking of facebook, I know about it and I registered it. One of my co workers made me do it, but I still do not know how to use it properly, so sorry, I am not into it. Most of my co workers love it and enjoy updating photos. Sometimes they force me to update my photos. If I learn how to use it, I might change my mind and enjoy it.

<I can only use the ipod if there is wireless network, like in my house, a hotel, or the airport.
I see. I thought you can access the Internet anywhere at anytime with your iPot touch like a cell phone.
Hi Appoh,
Sorry, I didn't know what the iPot touch could do. There seem to be many different iPot models, like iPod shuffle, iPod nano, and iPod classic(I think there are more!), but I don't really know about them. Actually, my niece has an iPot, and it has a camera. The other day, she showed me how to make and watch videos with her iPot.

I do not know what was the inspiration for the contents of the handbag of a woman to write. Heck, I know not where he found the Z Handbags, because they never used. What I know is that she cataloged the tissues clean and new, brush and comb, purse, which hairgrip – and the closure of parts for the league ….. Remember, it was missing in the fifties when the modern Spencer was wearing garters, stockings – and panties. And no, I do not believe that the bag contained knicker elastic thread.

Maybe you have thought about adding a little bit a lot more than just your thoughts? I am talking about, what you say is critical and every thing. But its got no punch, no pop! Perhaps in the event you added a pic or two, a video? You could have such a a lot more potent weblog for those who let persons SEE what youre talking about instead of just reading it.

I was wondering if you ever considered changing the layout of your website? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say. But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having 1 or two pictures. Maybe you could space it out better?

Hi David,
You came back to Japan with a lot of memories and a heavier luggage, didn't you?
Your story about traffic in the UK sounds terrible. Just imagining waiting eight hours in the car made me feel crazy! I read an article in the newspaper concerning traffic jam the other day and according to it, the police in London is thinking of good traffic system preparing for the London 2012 Olympic. Is the situation in London so terrible that the drivers have the system for going to the toilet? It's really difficult to imagine, isn't it?
By the way, I couldn't not figure out the word " tjhe system." Does "tjhe" mean "Jimmi Hendrix Experience"? Does it mean " bad, and terrible system"? Or something else? I have no idea!
I get sleepy, so I'd like to post my comment tomorrow.
Bye for now,
Anne
