Thank you for your feedback. It's a bit tricky to say 'dekita' or 'suru koto ga dekita' in English, isn't it? When you are talking about something you did(your action), you don't usually use "could + do", but you use "couldn't + do" as in ‘～できなかった’.

Before I joined this blog, I didn't think I could read such long stories in English, or rather, I had never read books in English. I read from the first book to the 6th one in Japanese at that time. When the original version of the final book was going to come out, some old regulars encouraged me to read it, and I really wanted to know the ending, so I decided to give it a try. Before I read the final book, I read some easy and short books, and then I read Vol. 1 to Vol. 3 in English as practice for the 7th book. It was not that difficult because I knew the stories. I was able to guess what it was saying even if there was a part I didn't understand. You know the stories of Harry Potter books, so I think you can enjoy them in English as well. If you are not confident to read those long stories, I think it's a good idea to start with an easy and short book, and then try Harry Potter ones;-)

By the way, you have a middle ear infection? My daughter had it this summer, too, so I know it hurts. I hope you feel better soon. Take care!

As for your question, here are some example sentences and points from the book.

* could + 動詞は「～する能力があった」という意味で、「～(行動）できた」の訳としては不自然になることが多い。　ただし「～できなかった」は couldn't do で OK。
「～(行動)できた」は動詞をただ過去形にするだけでいい。　「ついにできた・結局できた」なら was/were able to do、「何とかできた」なら managed to do。

Speaking of the use of 'google' as a verb, I talked about it with my son the other day. I knew that 'google' is used as a verb both in English and Japanese these days, but he told me that 'yahoo' and 'wiki(wikipedia)' were also used as a verb, like ヤフる or ウィキる. Have you heard of them? I hadn't. My son says that everyone uses them, but I doubt the 'eveyone' means young people around my son's age(He is 15.) or just his friends. What do you think?

After coming back home from my short trip to Tokyo, I found my dad in low coughed a lot and had fever of 39 degrees. I called his home doctor immediately and the doctor kindly saw him after every patients went back. Bingo! He's got a new flu. Luckily, mom in law just went to 3-day-short-stay in the morning. Since then, we have been trying everything to avoid spreading it. I feel it seems like a survival game.

David & Tomo, I'm also looking forward to listening and reading that magazine. That's great!

Green, I don't know whether you can get 牛スジ or not in other places in Kansai, but you can surely taste that with お好み焼き、うどん、焼きそば here and there in Kobe. It's not oily at all!

I'm not clear either what David's correction meant whether "pretty" was not suitable for boys or the position of "pretty" was not good. 男の子にprettyはおかしいということか、prettyの位置の問題なのか、よく分かりませんでした。If neigher was good, how about "I'd like to see lovely Oliver again in a picture."

I'd like to see a picture/some pictures of your lovely nephew again.（可愛い甥ごさんの写真）

Tsuneko, thanks for your comment! And here's my idea to your question.
In your sentence, "were able to" sounds a bit strange to me. If you use the present tense, the sentence will be "I think you can use "pretty" in your sentence". In this case, you are talking about possibility, not someone's action, so I think your first version is OK. I think you can also say "I think you could use "pretty" in your sentence."(←これはちょっと可能性が下がる感じですよね)
As you know, "pretty" can be a translation for ‘kawaii’, but I think it's closer to ‘kirei’.
It's just my idea, so I may be wrong!

Thank you for your comment. After posting the comment last night, I straight went to bed and then the word “lovely” came to mind. I thought “Couldn’t I use “lovely” instead of “pretty”?” Here is my sentence:” I would like to see lovely Oliver’s photo again.” I am not sure both of our sentences are acceptable or not. When I read Green’s sentence at the first place, I felt strange but I was not sure I just thought it was the matter of position. But when I read David’s correction, he omitted “pretty”, so I assumed that it was not the matter of position. As I mentioned the last comment, Japanese women tend to use “可愛い” a lot, so it is ok for us(Japanese) to hear “可愛いオリバーの写真（オリバーの可愛い写真）”, but it might be strange to hear for English speakers. That’s the reason I asked the question for David. But thanks again thinking for me!!

I bought the January issue of EJ yesterday at a bookstore and enjoyed listening to the interview. Of course, I didn't miss reading Tomo's words^^)

About the sentence related"pretty"(可愛い）, can I share my idea with you?
When I read the sentence which David corrected, I wondered if this implied the meaning "可愛い”. I understood David's comment( 'Pretty' sounds a bit strange here').
As for the word"可愛い"、David　explained us before and I think it is very helpful for us, so if you are interested in it, please have a look at the journal entry on May 30th,2006. Tomo made sentences using "lovely" this time, and explained about words, and they are nice. Actually I've never used "lovely" before reading his journal. I haven't joined this blog,though.
There are a lot of English words to express" 可愛い"；lovely, cute, pretty, adorable.... a lot!
By the way, I've been hooked with figure skating these three days. I enjoyed watching each skater's performance. Johnny Weir who won the third place is very beautiful.I know it's weird to use "beautiful" for men, and I should use "handsome" instead, but I don't want to say "handsome." In the interview, David mentioned," ... a lot of it( common mistake(s)) is from direct translation." I should use a different word, but it's really frustrating.

Thanks for your help. I got it. I was confused about even how to use "can". Yes, "can" can be used when you talk about ability and possibility too. I need to be careful when I use the past tense of "can", and think twice which one is suitable, "could" for ability , or "was/were able to" /"managed to" for someone's action. And "couldn't" can be used in all situations.

Let me try to make a few sentences using these words.

I thought I could use "can" easily, but I couldn't.
It took me a long time but I felt I was able to understand the difference "could" and "was able to".
I hope I could use these expressions naturally.

I didn't think of the nunber 3 and 4, but my ideas are the same as yours. I first thought that 'Oliver's photo' was also okay, but if you say 'my picture', it can mean 'a photo you took', so I used the expression 'a photo/picture of someone' to make it clear.（考え過ぎかもですが。。）

Thank you very much for checking my sentences. I got it. You, young guys don’t say these words when you mean doing a search(検索). Looking at your example dialogue, all of them are 五段活用, aren’t they?! Let me try another one. It’s quite difficult for me to say “～れ！”, so I will use softer one “～れば”. Actually, what does ググれ/ウィキれ/ヤフれ mean? Doesn’t it mean “why don’t you check it up by yourself?”

As for our previous discussion, I don’t think you think too much. I’ve just googled which would hit more, “photo of someone” or “someone’s photo”, and found the former was far more than the latter, so I feel “photo of Oliver” is clearer than “Oliver’s photo” to make the differenceオリバーが写ってる写真 and オリバーが撮った写真. I also want to know native’s usage.

My husband was off today, so I asked him to take care of his father. I needed to attend a meeting in Osaka in the morning. I was going to have どて焼きfor lunch. I asked two of young ladies in 大丸 where I could eat it. They recommended どて焼き with some drinks at 居酒屋. I will try it in the evening another day. I had 焼き魚（鯛の味噌漬け）焼き定食 w/おでん @ 新梅田食堂街.
