My Next New Toy
Hi Team,
I got a copy of the English Journal from ALC on Saturday. I was surprised to see that even though the magazine had an interview with both of us, they chose to put Johnny Depp on the cover instead of me. I can't imagine why, but maybe it was because they didn't want to hurt his feelings.
Yesterday, I went to the Apple Store in Sakae, and I bought my next new toy. Whenever I buy a new toy, it always takes at least one very stressful day and a lot of telephone calls to support lines before I can actually use it, so that was how I spent today.
My new toy is a thing called 'Apple TV'. It is a small machine that you connect to your TV, and it allows you to display all the media content from your computer on the TV screen. (The connection is wireless: the computer is upstairs, and the TV is downstairs.) This means that I can now:
1) Browse my music library on my TV and play any of my CDs through my stereo in the living room. I can also use the 'Genius' feature of iTunes. This is a wonderful invention that allows you to choose just one song you want to listen to, and then ask the computer to pick 24 other songs of a similar type.
2) Watch any video content that is stored on my computer. Actually, this is the main reason I bought it - I decided to quit Sky Perfect TV and spend the money I save on buying TV shows that I like from the iTunes store.
3) Show any of my photos as a slide show on my TV and use my own music as BGM.
4) Rent and buy movies from the iTunes store whilst lying on my sofa!
5) Download and watch anything from YouTube on my TV.
It probably does other things as well, but that is as far as I have got with it. I'm sure you will be able to understand why I am so excited. I bought two series of a British comedy called 'Gavin and Stacey' from iTunes for about 2000 yen the other day, and now I can watch the show any time I want to. Gone are the days of just turning on the TV and hoping there was something I wanted to watch. (There usually wasn't.)
Anyway, I don't know if this is really a topic or not, but I wanted to tell you all about my new toy. Have you ever heard the saying 'Young boys never grow up; they just get more expensive toys'. Well, that's me! Please let me know if you have bought any interesting toys lately.
Bye for now,
David
PS This is the first entry I have done on last week's new toy - my lovely iMac. I now have an iMac, a Macbook, an Apple cinema display, three iPods, and two iPod shuffles, so my house is starting to look like an Apple store!

Hi David,
< I can't imagine why, but maybe it was because they didn't want to hurt his feelings.
I agree with you.(笑)
It seems like you are very busy with your new toy(←No offence, sorry!), but would you give us some of your time, please?
As you know, Tsuneko and I were talking about the sentence "I'd like to see Oliver's photo again" on the last entry. You said 'lovely' would be okay, but we were not sure where to put it. If you say “Oliverのかわいい写真(or かわいいOliverの写真) がまた見たい”, where do you put 'lovely'?
1) I'd like to see a lovely photo of Oliver again.
2) I'd like to see a photo of lovely Oliver again.
3) I'd like to see lovely Oliver in a photo again.
4) I'd like to see Oliver's photo again. He is lovely.
5) I'd like to see lovely Oliver's photo again.
Which one is the most natural? Or is there any other way of saying that?
We also talked about the expression 'a photo/picture of someone'. If you say 'my picture/photo', it can mean 'a picture/photo you took', right? If you talk about 自分の(写っている)写真, which is more common, 'my picture/photo' or 'a picture/photo of me'?
We need your help!
By the way, I've heard the saying 'Young boys never grow up; they just get more expensive toys' before. Actually, you told me this saying when my husband got a big new toy - his bike. I think it's so true!(笑)
Speak to you soon,

Hi Tsuneko,
<Teru is not rude at all!!!
I'm glad to hear that. I helped him to write that comment, but he wrote it himself, and I didn't corrected it much, so I was a bit worried about his words.
I showed him your message again. There were some words(or expressions) he didn't know, but he managed to read it. He said your second try was perfect. You know, boys have a naughty(or bad) mouth, so his example was a boys' version. Anyway, thanks for your comment again. It was good reading and writing practice for him:)

Hi David
How many Apple goods you have!
I haven't seen a person who has so many Apple goods like you!
I send 「I would like to watch Oliver's pretty photo again!」 on December 1st and many idea have been written.
However I don't understand why 「pretty」is not fit in this sentence yet

Hi David and everyone,
"Apple TV"? Without your explanation, I couldn't figure out what" Apple TV" was. Maybe I should go to "Apple Store" instead of strolling around Matsuzakaya. Steve Jobs must be glad to hear that you love Apple toys.
For me, I got "ipod" this year, and this is a colse friend with me at the moment.
Hi tsuneko and Tomo,
I know David gives us advice concerning with your questions, but can I share my ideas with you?
Actually, I've been thinking about the position and the difference of the meaning on each sentence as well.
> 1) I'd like to see a lovely photo of Oliver again.
→I think 'of Oliver' makes it clear that he is lovely in the photo.
>5) I'd like to see lovely Oliver's photo again.
→I think this doesn't necessarily mean the photo is lovely.'I' might be wanting to see lovely Oliver, and it CAN mean that picture of Oliver is lovely ,too.
Anyway, It all depends on the context, I think.
I'm also looking forward to David's advice.

Hi Green,

Hi Tomo,
Sorry, I thought you had sorted out the issue about Oliver's photo. Basically, it sounds a bit strange to put an adjective before somebody's name like that. If you said 'a photo of your lovely nephew', that would be okay, but 'lovely Oliver' sounds unnatural to me. Here are my responses to the sentences you asked about:
1) I'd like to see a lovely photo of Oliver again.
(Okay, but it would be better without 'lovely'. Does this mean that you don't want to see a photo unless it is a lovely one? The best way to say this would be 'another lovely photo of Oliver'.
2) I'd like to see a photo of lovely Oliver again.
(I wouldn't say this for the reason I have given above.)
3) I'd like to see lovely Oliver in a photo again.
(Same again.)
4) I'd like to see Oliver's photo again. He is lovely.
(That's a lot better.)
5) I'd like to see lovely Oliver's photo again.
(Again, see the above explanation.)
Hope that helps,
David

Hi David
Thank you. That’s I wanted to know.
As I said, when I read your correction of the sentence, you did not change “pretty” to “lovely”, just omitted it. It made me think usage of “可愛い” a lot.
Your explanation really helps me. Thanks again.

Thank you all! Thank to David's advice, we finally managed to sort out the issue about Oliver's photo, didn't we?! Yeay!
"I'd like to see another lovely photo of Oliver." is the most natural expression, isn't it?!
I didn't know it sounds a bit strange for natives if you put an adjective before someone's name. I will remember this.
Tomo, thank you for writing up the issue and asking David nicely for his help. Also, I'm very happy to get perfect score from Teru.

It sounds that you've been very busy with your lovely new computer and other devices, and also you've been having a lovely time with them, right?
"Apple TV" is new to me and I'm not sure how much I understand what it is, even though I read your explanation. I have a ipod nano which I bought a year ago, but actually I don't think I use it properly yet.;-)
At last, I got the EJ!! Yeah!!

Hi Team,
I did:)
Green、David
(人の名前じゃなくて、 'a photo of your lovely nephew'(かわいい甥ごさんの写真)のようにするならOK。) でも I'd like to see a lovely photo of Oliver again. I'd like to see another lovely photo of Oliver again.
I'd like to see Oliver's photo again. I'd like to see Oliver's photo again. He is lovely.
(Thanks for your help, Appoh!)、前にDavidが「かわいい」(cute、pretty, lovely)の使い分けの説明をしてくれたので参考までに。。
It's a lovely day, isn't it.
Would you like a cup of tea? That would be lovely.(イギリスでよく使われます)
Japan is really lovely in the autumn.
She / He is a lovely person.
Anyway, as Anne said, you gave us a good chance to think of the usage of ‘かわいい’, so thank you.(Amo, thank you too for asking the question!)
Tsuneko, Anne, you are welcome:) It was an interesting discussion, wasn't it?
Maki, glad to hear that you finally got a copy of the English Journal, and thanks for reading my comment as well. Let's study with the magazine and the CD;-)

Hi David,
Wow, You got AppleTV!
I remember the presentation that Steve Jobs was introducing the toy. I have seen the presentation via iTunes. I like his presentation because we can see something wonderful what he says.
At that time, we saw Apple tied up many movie studios in America.
In America, you can rent or buy HD movies via AppleTV. But actually, In Japan, the gadget can not tap its potential...
The day you could get the excellent function would come, I guess.

Hi everyone
I did not get back until late last night. There was a Christmas party of my company after work.
I enjoyed the party except one thing. We had to perform at the party, and I really did not like to perform.
I am not sure but most of the Japanese people do not like that. For the people from other countries, it seems ok or I should say they love that. At least, other employees (non-Japanese) really enjoyed performing at the party.
I have had another busy week this week, so I am really happy that today is the last day of the weekdays.

Hi David and everyone,
I’ve got the English Journal and immediately opened to the page of both David and Tomo and listened to the CD. Now I know your full name in Kanji. That’s nice! As for the CD, I recognized the difference of the way of speaking; Johnny Depp sometimes stopped and sounded like he was thinking or choosing what he would say with a bit hesitating voice. David, you really spoke fast and cheerfully in a humorous way without hesitation even though you sounded a bit gurgling(ちょっと痰がからんでるような). No comment for the last interviewee now. I haven’t confirmed each scripts yet but I felt(笑) you talked very nice things for us, language learners and among them you talked about your “yasai-deshita vs yasukatta-desu” mistake again that reminded me of the real truth(真相). If I remember correctly, your teacher, Fusae spoke to you “デヴィッドさん、新しいズボンを買いましたね”, actually she seemed to have chosen the phrase from the lesson. You did a 2-week strike since you said we had laughed (mentioned in the book).
Now, I’m quite sure we laughed not because of your mistake but because of your humorous tone and atmosphere. I have another reason why I think so; Japanese learners often make such small mistakes that never make us laugh in class. Anyway, we should have noticed you were a kind of sensitive. It’s very important not to hurt other’s feelings. I also like what you said; ALC didn’t want to hurt J. Depp’s feeling.
Hi May,
I agree with you. You said this topic sounded like Apple’s advertisement and they might give David a lovely present. I know another man on this blog who loves Mac very much. I’m looking forward to his comment.

Nao, can I comment on just one thing you said? About the expression ‘~のおかげで’, it's 'thanks TO'. Sorry, if it was just a typo!
Yoshi, nice to hear from you again. Actually, David showed us a speech made by Steve Jobs to a group of graduating university students before. In the speech, Steve Jobs were talking about "connecting the dots". It was quite difficult for me to read the article at that time, but I thought his experiences were amazing.
Amo, I'm also interested in what you did at the party. I don't like to speak or sing in front of a lot of people, but I like singing in karaoke with my friends;-)

Yes, David are saying very nice things for us in the interview, including his "yasui/yasai" mistake. I'm sure his experiences encourage and motivate language learners. Actually, I'm writing this as I'm listening to the CD;-)

Thanks to both of you, I also learned the right expression. I used to use "thank to" when I meant "~のおかげで", but it is "thankS to".
Tomo and everyone,
Thank you for additional information about me but I always get embarrased to hear him saying that. (I'm fat.) (I've just arrived.) Fusae, Hisae, Akiko, another Akiko, Megumi, Mari, and Kiyoshi, if you read this comment, please help me.(笑)

Hi David,
You got "Apple TV"? Lucky you! You are so excited? I know how you feel. Two month ago, I bought Blu-ray Disc decoder. As you know, the picture of it is so clear, and it can record for many hours, so I enjoy watching lots of movies which was recorded on it. (I can watch lots of movies on wowow.) It is my new toy.
Hi everyone,
Did you have a nice weekend? I had a "Bounenkai" with my friends last Saturday. We went to a Italian restaurant. We ate pasta, pizza, and "Bagna cauda". Have you eaten it? It is a vegetable dish. We ate various vegetables which dipped in a hot sauce which was made with olive oil, garlic, and anchovies. I love it! By the way, this month has Christmas Day! I put up Christmas decorations in my house last week. The other day, I had lunch with my sister. I asked her "What gifts for Christmas do you give to your sons?". (On Christmas Day, my nephews get only gifts from Santa Claus.) She said she is going to give it to only his second son. When I heard it, I was very surprised, so I asked "Why?". She said that her elder son is a junior high school student, and she and her husband know that he doesn't believe in Santa Claus now, so they said to thier sons "We made agreement with Santa Claus that you get gifts from him until you graduate from elementary school", and they said to their elder son "Now, you are a junior high school student, so you can't get gift from him since this year." He said readily "All right", but their second son said "Oh, no! I have only 4 years to get gift from Santa Claus!" It's very insipid to spend Christmas without gift, isn't it? So I will give gift to him on this Christmas!
Good night,
Amica
