My Next New Toy (Corrections)

Hi team,

I would like to say that this entry is late because I have been working hard again, but I'm afraid that would not be true. In fact, this entry is late because I have spent the last two nights playing with my new computer. Have you heard of Adobe CS? 'CS' stands for 'Creative Suite', and Adobe CS is a package of Adobe software. The one I have includes Adobe Indesign (for doing page layout in magazines, books, and brochures), Adobe Illustrator (for illustrations, graphics, logos, etc.), Dreamweaver (for creating websites), and Photoshop, which I'm sure you have all heard of.

Actually, I bought Adobe CS3 last year because I needed to be able to edit my books even after the page layout had been done. Because I bought another computer recently, I had to buy another software package, so now I have CS 4 as well. The thing about these programs is that they are professional software, and therefore very complicated. I have only just started to scrape the surface of Illustrator and Indesign, and I had no idea at all how to use Photoshop until last night.

When I went to the conference in Shizuoka, I met a British guy who designs his own books, and he recommended that I sign up for the training videos on a site called lynda.com. I had a look at them, and they seemed really interesting, so I was planning to start in the new year. When I installed CS4 on my new computer, though, it said that I could choose a free gift for registering the software, and one of the choices was 30 days' free access to lynda.com. To cut a long story short, I have been glued to my monitor ever since! There are thousands of hours of training videos on all the Adobe software and lots of other software besides.

That reminds me; did I tell you about the interesting example of an English mistake that a teacher told me at the conference? The mistake is explained in my book, but his example was much funnier than mine. It was written in an email sent to him by one of his students. Here is the sentence: can you figure out why it is funny and what the correct version should be?

"Thank you for your wonderful class. I learned many things except English."

Apologies if I have told you that already, but as you know, I am getting old and forgetful.

Anyway, here is some feedback on your comments.

We also talked about the expression 'a photo/picture of someone'. If you say 'my picture/photo', it can mean 'a picture/photo you took', right? If you talk about 自分の（写っている）写真, which is more common, 'my picture/photo' or 'a picture/photo of me'?
('A picture of me' is more natural if you are saying, for example, 'this is a picture of me in Disneyland, but if you want to say 'she took my picture/a picture of me', both are okay.)

I haven't seen a person who has so many Apple goods like you！
(I've never met anyone who has so many Apple products as you.)

we finally managed to sort out the issue about Oliver's photo (This is very natural. '... finally managed to ...' is a good pattern to learn.)

You seemed to have the great “Bounenkai” (It sounds as if you had a great 'bounenkai'.)

I have no idea even if Ican use a Blu-ray Disk recorder. (I have no idea if I would even be able to use a Blu-ray Disk recorder.)

You watched 'J -album' commercial ,didn't you? (A lot of you use this structure when you want to talk about something that someone said, but actually, you do not need the question tag. I would just write the statement again and put a question mark after it.
You went to Disneyland again?
You bought another new toy?
You watched the 'J-album' commercial?)

enjoyed the party except one thing. (I enjoyed the party except for one thing.)

What did you do at the party? Sorry, it's just out of curiosity. (Just out of curiosity, what did you do at the party?)

I have another reason why I think so (there is another reason why I think so)

You said this topic sounded like Apple’s advertisement and they might give David a lovely present. (I hope so! You can never have too many iPods, that's my motto!)

It's a shame that you couldn't get the ticket. (A very natural and useful sentence.)

Good thing you did a new entry just when I decided to drop in for the first time in a while :-) So, you’ve been playing with your new toys…er, working on your new tools? I know, you can easily spend hours working on software like that. (Not that I’m good at using it.) Don’t forget to take a break every now and then.

That example of an English mistake was so funny. I really don't like to call any language mistakes funny, but it is good funny, right? It’s really a good one. It reminded me of your comment in English Journal about you not learning any Chinese in the Chinese class ;-)

Hi David,
Thanks for your feedback! It sounds you've been working harder than last week with your new lovely computer. I haven't heard "Adobe CS", though I know just "Adobe". I don't mean that I understand how to use it.;-) Incindentally, you can listen to an interview of Craig Tegel, managing director of Adobe Systems in Japan after David's one in the latest EJ. This time, your topic sounds like Adobe's advertisment!
Anyway, it seems that you will spend all your weekend at home, right?!

As for the mistake, it means that he learned not English, but many other things. The teacher might have been disappointed to read his email!
I would write;
"I learned many things as well as English."

I'm attending a business meeting in Yokohama on Monday, before that I'm visiting Tokyo. So I will see you only on Tuesday.

Thank you for your feedback with a detailed explanation that helps us more. About Adobe's items, I will read it again. It takes me more time to understand.

That gave me a big smile. If this student had meant it, his/her teacher would feel a lot disappointed as Maki said, but the teacher could notice he hadn't meant it. He/She did a good job! If I was this student, I would use "besides" instead of "except".

If you have an extra time during your photoshop training, please have a look at the last comment of mine on the last entry which seemed to be posted at almost the same time as your new entry. You can see several familiar names there.

Hi Tsuneko,

I just read your comment. I don't blame you for laughing - it was a very funny mistake! I think I would have laughed too. The reason I tell that story so much is that I often hear foreign teachers in Japan telling students not to worry about mistakes. I think this is an easy thing to say, but it is a very difficult thing to do. I use that story to show English learners that even people like me who are not shy or lacking in confidence still feel embarrassed when we make mistakes in a foreign language - it's all a part of the learning process.

Anyway, if you hadn't laughed at my mistake that day, I wouldn't have had such a wonderful story to use in all my books, so I should probably say 'thank you'!

I'm not accustomed to using the expression" apart from" and "other than."

The story reminds me of my mistakes ; a few years ago I sent an e-mail to a native English speaker to say "Thank you." Before sending, I checked the whole sentence, and I thought it was OK, but after sending, I noticed my grammatical mistake! If I wouldn't notice it, I would be happy , but I was shocked and embarrassed instead.
David, as you mentioned answering tsuneko's comment, it is very difficult not to worry about mistakes.
Actually, to be honest, I'm really appreciated to your corrections, but still, I'm shocked about my mistakes.

Thanks! I had a great time with my ex-coworkers, two women, last night. We worked at the same bank more than thirty years ago, but it was just three years and we have been kept in touch now and then. One of them have been working and she is a sectional chief at the moment. The other became an artist (a Japanese calligrapher).

I have heard of Adobe Reader(I have it on my computer.), but not Adobe CS. Professional software, it sounds difficult, but you need to learn how to use them, right? Good luck on your training!

I'm going to Disneyland with my family tomorrow. We'll leave home around 6:30 a.m., so I'm going to get to bed early tonight after I finish the laundry. It will be the first time I have been to Disneyland in ages, so I'm really looking forward to going there.

It sounds you are really happy with your new toy. I know “Adobe” but I have never heard of “Adobe CS”. I am not familiar with computer things or IT. I remember you saying that you were not good at computer, but now you are getting good at it!!!
Speaking of the example of an English mistake, that made me laugh, but I am agree with Lily, so I shouldn’t have laughed at it. You know, one of my sisters teaches Japanese for foreigners. Your story reminds me of her students’ mistakes. Sometimes she checks their sentences at home, and what we end up with is our English are also funny to English speakers. By the way, my answer is the same as others, I put “besides” instead of “except”.

I know I should have written this on last entry, but I did not have time to write.
Usage of “かわいい”, I had a reason that I put “lovely” before Oliver. Have you watched of American TV drama “Ugly Betty”? I have, so I thought it was ok to put an adjective before someone’s name. Maybe it was special case, right? David.
By the way, if you use “cute” for men like “He is cute” it does not mean “彼、可愛いね” but “He is sexy and attractive”. (It is American English and informal) FYI

You really want to know what I did at the party? There was a competition so we employees were divided into 5 groups. Our group was not into that competition, so we decided just sing a Filipino song and we did not practise until the last couple of days. Needless to say, we were at the bottom. Anyway, I enjoyed the rest of the party.

Adobe's software are very complicated. I think so too.
All functions of the software I use is no more than 10%!

How has your photo training been? Your words made me relieved. Thank you for them. To be honest, I thought you exaggerated a bit to make it more interesting and the part of strike was not always necessary. There were 5 of us and you alone in the lift, so you probably got a shock of 5 times. “David suddenly disappeared from my class without saying anything.” “He came back today.” At both of the time, there were lots of question marks in Fusae’s face. Just out of curiosity, who or what brought you back to Japanese studying, that was really great. Also, your guts and efforts! How did you manage to overcome the feeling of “Once bitten, twice shy.” Another story can surely encourage learners who are going to withdraw. During writing this comment, lots of names came across my mind, Colin, Annette, Marie, Eva(Spanish), Pamela & another David, Paul, Andrew, Michael, Alice(Chinese), Sheng Tao, Xiao Fong, Yan Fang, Daniel(French) and Hisae, Fusae, Akiko, another Akiko, Megumi, Mari, Chinami, Yumi, Kiyoshi, and lots of the other teachers(Sorry!), do you still keep in touch with some of them? What ? Sold out or...pointing the menue.

Last week, I had a chance to sing "Last Christmas"
by Wham, for the first time. I found this expression in its lyrics and liked it, so I had been waiting for a chance to use it. 覚えたてのホヤホヤなので、ちゃんと使えてるのか分かりませんが、使ってみました。もしかしたら適当ではないかもしれません。今は"once and for all"(I've met this phrase in Kazu's blog.)というのを使いたくてたまりませんが、むずかしくて使えないでいます。

It seems to have some meanings depends on situations. The following are just for your information. I collected quite lots of examples but I'm still blur, so I'll stop thinking of it now and just wait for a chance to make a good use some time.

b) きっぱり(と)、きっちりと、はっきりと、最終的に
