Happy New Year!
Hi Team,
Thanks for all the messages. I hope that this coming year will be a great one for all of you.
I don't know what the weather is like where you are, but we have had snow in Seto for two days now, and it's still snowing. I went up to a place I really like at the top of Sanage Yama last night. It's not usually difficult to get to because there is a road, but last night all the roads were covered in snow, so it was a bit tricky. Luckily, I had my winter tyres and my four-wheel-drive Hiace, so it was just like being back in Hokkaido.
I wanted to go there because there is a spectacular night-view that stretches as far as Mie. I went there a couple of years ago on New Year's Eve, and at midnight I saw fireworks going up from lots of places. I was hoping to see that again, but the weather was so bad that I couldn't even see any of the city lights of Nagoya. Actually, I couldn't see anything at all! It was still really nice, though - very peaceful and white. I knew it was going to be cold, so I put on all my Hokkaido gear. I was so warm that I think I could have just fallen asleep on the mountain and I would have been fine.
So now that 2010 has begun, what are your resolutions for the new year? I decided this year that my resolution was going to be not to set any goals or targets as I usually do. I think I have put a bit too much pressure on myself for the last couple of years, so my key word this year is going to be 'balance'. As you know, I will be leaving Nanzan in March to focus on writing and publishing, so I kind of have a goal of making enough money to live on, but the most important thing will be to find a balance between working and having fun. Another resolution I often make at New Year is to go on a diet. I lost a lot of weight in October and November, but then I put it all back on in December. It seems as if I am always either starving myself or stuffing myself, so I am going to try to find a healthy balance for that as well.
2010 will be an exciting year for me because I have no idea where I will be going or what I will be doing after April. Once I give up my full-time job, I will have lots of time to travel. I'm hoping to visit the UK, Canada, America, New Zealand, and Singapore this year, but that will depend on how much money I can make working for myself.
Actually, I have just got back into a "work" frame of mind again after being very lazy for most of December. I've started writing the English version of my red book, and I've been doing pretty much only that for the last three days. Working at home felt a bit strange at first because I have spent most of the last four years in my office at Nanzan, but I'm really enjoying it. There are also some new points that I am planning to add to the next edition of the Japanese version of the book, so I will be showing you those to get your feedback in the near future.
I'm sure that most people do not have plans as big as Blue's (having a baby is a fairly major event!), but please let me know what you think 2010 is going to hold for you. Did you make any resolutions? Do you have any special plans? Is there anything you want to achieve?
Anyway, I hope you are enjoying the holiday, and all the best for 2010.
Bye for now,
David

Hi David and everyone,
Happy New Year 2010!
May you have good happiness this year.
As for my this year's resolution.
I want to improve my English skill too,as Gussan said.
I'll try to find way to improve my English skill.
It has to be there is something way to improve.
I don't know what that is.
I'm going to find it as much as possible.
Needless to say I'm going to keep writing something here more than last year.
I'd like to add some effort that I should write it politely as much as possible.
I have been posting what I was able to write things.
So my comment was always couldn't be completed.
That's why, I want to take care of my posting.
Be careful, be politely, be considered.
This is my new year's resolution.
bye for now.

Hi David and everyone,
We had a family reunion at my father's house yesterday. We ate, drank, talked a lot and laughed for hours. Today, we(my family) are going to the hospital to see my husband's father. After that, we are going to meet my husband's big & little sisters and her families, so it's another family reunion.
My resolutions for this year... Hmm, one of them is to study English to be a better speaker, of course. To keep joining here, to comment on every entry, and to write as many comments as possible.
Another one is... being more active and positive!
Hi Gussan,
Good luck with the Marathon!
Hi Yumi,
Welcome to the blog! I'm also looking forward to reading your comments.
I've got to get going. See you soon,

★Happy New Year, David and everyone!★
I hope you are having a great holiday.
David, I'm glad to hear that you had a peaceful and nice time at Sanage yama even though you couldn't see the spectacular view.
I'm having a bit busy but relaxed time; two sons came back home and talking with them over "お節料理” and other dishes is really nice. It makes me feel happy.
My resolutions for the new year? Well.... first, to keep posting comment here, and second, to read as many books as possible.
I have a few more plans in mind this year and I'm hoping I'll say "I've done!" at the end of this year.
Hi Yumi,
Welcome to the blog! I'm looking forward to hearing from you too!
Hi Gussan,
You are running "10k"? Wow, that's sounds tough. Good luck !
Hi Green,

Hi David and everyone.
(Hi new member: “Nice to meet you! I look forward to communicating with.”)
What I want to do in 2010 is to lose weight, not only real weight but also the volume of the things around me. I feel time is limited particularly these days, so it’s time I selected what to do and what to have. I’ve been keeping old things related to my memories which should be reduced and have lots of dreams that have to be chosen, otherwise most of them will remain unnecessary or undone. Besides this main one, there are some other ones, such as, “once I get in the kitchen, cook each meal within 30 minutes”, “early to bed and early to rise”, “read nice books in English”, “try to away from dictionaries when writing comments here, “stock as many children’s songs and chants as I possibly can”.
Lastly, I really wish all of us good luck in 2010.

Hi David and everyone
Hope you all are having a wonderful holiday!
As for me, I just stayed and relaxed at home these three days, and I will visit my oldest sister’s place tomorrow.
Here are my resolutions for the New Year.
1.To keep posting the comments on this blog the same as last year.
2.To keep going to the gym for good shape.
And these are not resolutions but I am hoping to visit my youngest sister in USA as I said before, going back to Okinawa, and traveling to somewhere in Europe. That will depend on how often I can take vacations in this year.
Hi David
Glad to hear that you enjoyed the New Year’s Eve at the top of Sanage Yama, even it was bad weather.
Hi Yumi
Welcome to the blog, and looking forward to your next comment.
Hi Gussan
Good Luck!
Hi Blue
My youngest sister is expecting and her baby is due this March. When is yours?
Take good care of yourself.

Hi David and Everyone,
It sounds like you are having a great holiday.
David, it's so nice to know that you had a peaceful time at your favourite place and I'm glad you didn't freeze!;-)
Maybe I told you before #or maybe not), "Having no resolutions is my resolution.";-)
However, I'd like to read more books than last year and I will be more careful about writing in English. I will keep posting comments here, of course.
Hi Kazu,
Happy one-Year Anniversary!
Hi Gussan,
Wow! 10km?! Good luck!
Hi Anne,
I look forward to your good news at the end of this year.;-)
Hi tsuneko,
I understand what you mean about "lose weight". Recently I also think that I should reduce old things and select what I keep with me.
Hi Yumi,
Welcome to the blog! I'm also looking forward to hearing from you again soon.

Hi team,
Happy New Year !
My resolutions of this year are confidential because they are too personal. Sorry.
The 1300th anniversary event has begun in Nara. Are there anyone who have a plan to see it ? I missed the 1200th event in Kyoto in 1994 and I still regret that.
By the way, I saw an interesting news on CNN.
How do you say 2010 ?
According to the poll, 69% respond 'two thousand and ten' and the others say 'twenty ten'.
How about in Japan ?
Do you say '2010年' or '平成22年' ?
Hi Yumi,
It's great to have you with us.

Hi Kazu,
Happy Anniversary!
Hi Appoh,
I usually say '2010年'. 書類などに書く時は「平成○○年」ですが、いつも「何年だっけ?」となります(笑)
Hi David and everyone,
I'm going to visit a shrine this afternoon to make New Year's wishes for health and happiness. My son is taking entrance examinations in the middle of this month and February, so I'm going to pray for his success on the exams as well.
Hope you are all enjoying your holiday.

Happy New Year to David and everyone!
Hope you may have a wonderful and lovely year!
David, it's so nice to hear that you've been having a tough but peaceful time. I can't imagine what it is like on top of the Mountain on New Year day, but it sounds like sacred and special. Wasn't it?
I was shocked because I've slept to miss the very time the New Year had come! So my husband and I ate "年越しそば" on Jan. 1st. We laughed it was "年越しちゃったそば", but I felt happy I could laugh on the first day of the year. I wish not to forget smiles at any time!

Hi Tomo, Anne, amo, Maki & Green,
Thank you for sticking up for me.
Owing to your support, I finished running the distance without a stop. However, I wonder whether I broke my record ot not.
The race was tough for me because the running ourse has many slopes.
To tell the truth, I run 10km on Saturdays. But my ususal course is different from today's course.
As my age, it's a secret (^^;), it is difficult for me to break my record every year.
Anyway, I'm relieved to finish.

Hi Yuzu,
Welcome to the blog.
Hi Gussan,
I've been working all day again, and your comment has inspired me to go for a run. I haven't run for ages, though, so it might be quite tough! I've been back in "crazy work mode" for a few days now, and I have written more than 31,000 words (77 pages of A4) so far. It actually feels nice to be working again!
- David
- 2010年1月 3日 22:25
I'm back. I did about six km, and it wasn't too bad.
I don't know why, but as I was running I suddenly started getting ideas for the May seminar, and by the time I finished, I had the whole thing planned! I don't really remember any of the run at all. Anyway, I'll tell you all about my ideas tomorrow.

Hi Gussan,
Congratulations! You run 10km on Sundays? That's great! It's impossible for me and I don't want to run but I decided to walk regularly again, maybe twice or three times a week because I couldn't do it last year.
Hi Appoh,
I'm not planning to see it but I'm going to Nara this March.
>How do you say 2010 ?
→ I say "two thousand ten." Saying "twenty ten" is shorter but I'm not accustomed to it.
Hi Nao,
I hope you have a great time in Guam.
By the way, you waited for two hours to get" 福袋”and couldn't get it? That's too bad!
I watched some news concerning with "福袋” on TV, but I'm wondering how long people need to wait to get it.

I'm thinking that I'll see my family in Nara this March or early April.

I deemed that your 6km running brought good inspiration for you seminar in May. Breath-fresheres are often very important.
For me, long distance running makes my mind from official mode to private mode. That's why I ran every Sarurday morning. (If it rains, I'll postpone it to Sunday morning.)

Hi David & everyone,
Happy New Year 2010!
I wish this year will become blissful for you.
When I got up this morning, I saw a partial lunar eclipse. It was a small otoshidama for me.
As for my new year resolutions, I'd really like to improve my English skill. I wouldn't like to tell it specifucally to you, but I'll try it.
Actually I have three more holidays. I'm going to learn English as much as I can.
I'm going to join new year 10km Marathon held on the day after tomorrow. I'm a little nervous now.
Bye for now.
