Greetings from Hanoi
Hi team,
Thanks for keeping the blog lively while I am away. Hanoi is slowly starting to come to life after the Tet (New Year) holiday. The streets are much busier now, and more of the shops are starting to open. It's been a bit like a ghost town since we got here, so it's nice to see things getting back to normal.
Have any of you ever been to Hanoi? The traffic here is crazy, and there don't appear to be any rules of the road at all. I think that people here drive on the right-hand side of the road, but the only reason I know that is because the cars are left-hand drive. There is no way to tell from watching the traffic because people just drive on any bit of the road that happens to be free!
For the first few days, most of the students were terrified about crossing the street, but they have all got used to it now. Today, I saw a blind man crossing the one of the busiest roads in the city. No one helped him, and none of the cars or bikes stopped for him even though it was obvious that he was using a stick. I was too far away to help him, but I was amazed to see how he managed to get across by himself.
The hotel we are staying at is okay, but it's very noisy. This morning, they were doing karaoke in the restaurant at 8 a.m.! The main singer appeared to be a policeman. Unfortunately, singing was not one of his better skills. Two days ago, someone was running around the corridors screaming at about 5 a.m., but that didn't happen today. The staff seem to do nothing apart from sit around and play computer games or chat in the lobby. The lady who comes to clean my room is very friendly, though.
Today was the first day that we have had any sunshine at all since we arrived, but the air is so polluted here that it's impossible to see the sky even when it's sunny. I'm looking forward to getting back and seeing the blue skies of Aichi and Gifu.
The students started taking their Vietnamese language classes yesterday, and I met the director of the school. His Japanese is fantastic, and when I asked him about it, he said, "I have studied Japanese a bit as a hobby." It turned out, however, that was not exactly the full story. He lived in Japan for 15 years, and he has a PhD in mathematics from Tokyo University! He also speaks English and French. He's a very interesting guy.
We don't have anything special planned for tomorrow, but the students are going out sight-seeing around the city. On Sunday, we are all going to a village where they make ceramics. I'll let you know how that was when I get back.
Hope you are all keeping well.
David

Hi David,
It's nice to hear from you!
I've never been to Vietnam, but my friend who had visited there highly recommended me,"You should go there!."
By the way, I happened to see a TV program reporting Vietnam this morning; it was from Ho Chi Minh not from Hanoi, though.
Your story and TV program make me feel more and more I should visit Vietnam some time soon.
As amo said, I can't believe the blind man could cross the busy street without any help!
The karaoke at 8a.m? Hmm... That sounds like the scene cutting off from some movie.
It seems that students and you are having very unique experiences and are having fun.
Meeting new people, meeting new culture...it's very nice, isn't it?
Hope the rest of your stay would be also nice.
Hi everyone,
Have a lovely weekend,
Anne

Hi David
I'm glad to hear from you.
To read your story, I feel that Vietnam is a energetic country.
A blind man crossing busy street, karaoke at 8 a.m and someone running with screaming, they are all amazing!
I've never been to Vietnam and other south-east Asian countries. I want to go to any of those. Currently, Vietnam is a first choice :-)
I'm looking forward to hear your story about sight-seeing and village where you are going to visit.
Please enjoy rest of your trip!
I couldn't write about quotations in last entry and write it here.
I searched for "future".

Hi trmr
About your question, I think you need to put "s" after "create" in the sentence, so your sentence is ok.
If you write your sentence like this, you do not need to put "s".
I want to be one of those people who create the future to make the world a better place.
Hope it will help.

Hi amo
Thank you, amo.

So, it needs "s". And in your example, subject is "those people", and it doesn't need "s", right?

Hi David,
Thank you for sharing your story in Hanoi.
Your students started taking their Vietnamese language classes?
They are hardworking students,aren't they?
Hi Anne,
I watched the figure skating live broadcast for a few minutes in my office.
Then I have so many things to do in a hurry that I didn't watch it all.
How unlucky!
I feit reary sorry that Nobunari Oda's shoelace broke too.
Hi everyone,
One of my coworker called me this afternoon and said "Mr.Tajiri passed away by traffic accident this morning ."
I was very surprised.
He is still in his late thirties and has two children.
Bye for now.

Hi David,
Glad to hear from you! It sounds everything is getting back to normal in Hanoi, so you can enjoy staying there more than before, right? I can't imagine how the blind man managed to cross the busy street by himself! I thought that there are lots of bicycles rather than cars on the road in Hanoi.
Karaoke at 8 a.m.? Screaming at 5 a.m.? It sounds that you are having fun(?) even inside the hotel!;-)
I haven't been to Vietnam yet. Actually I'd planned to go there once, but at that time I couldn't. Hope to visit there some time soon.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you again soon.

Hello, David and everyone.
Honoi sounds a little annoying till you get used to.
By the way, I am going to Guam on 25th to March 1st.
I heard how it is from one of my friends who went there two weeks ago, most tourists going there may be japanese.
It does not sound as if I am going to a foreign country, which discouraged me to be excited going there as graduation trip.
Anyway, I hope it will be fun for me to travel there.
Also it will change the topic to question to you guys such a thing, but I want to solve this.
What I would like to solve is English grammar question. Which is correct?
I have Students familiar with English.
or
I have Students get familiar with English.
I know second one must be correct, but why is that second one must be correct?
Because you would also say,
I will make Students happy.
This rule does not apply to this order "have+人+形容詞", does it?
PLEASE HELP MY ENGLISH QUESTION!!
See you.
Ken

Hi Ken,
Both of those sentences are a bit strange. I think what you are trying to say is "I help students (to) become more familiar with English." The second of your sentences has that meaning, but does not sound very natural to me. "Have someone do something" is used to talk about actions that you can order someone to do, like "I had the students practise for ten minutes." "Get familiar with English" is not really an action; it's more a change in the state of the students' knowledge, so it sounds a bit strange to say "have them get familiar."
Hope that helps.

Hi Green,
I'm sorry to hear that your co-worker passed away .
These sad things could happen to everyone, right?
Hi Ken,
Your question is interesting and very difficult to answer.
David, thank you for explaining about Ken's question. It is very helpful for me(us).
Actually, I was thinking how I could show my ideas ,and then I found David's comment.
When I read Ken's question, I thought both of them were unnatural, but I could not figure out the answer.
【"Get familiar with English" is not really an action】
→I have no idea about "an action or not"!
Ken, have fun at Guam!

Hi Ken and David,
I thought Ken's question was interesting, but I also thought both of the sentences were unnatural, when I read them. I was wondering how I could explain that, and I closed my PC once.;-)
David, thank you for your explanation! I'm very glad when I found your comment. It helps me a lot. As Anne said, I have no idea about "an action or not", too.
Talk to you later,
Maki
- Maki
Hi Maki and Anne,
"become more used to" would be the same as "become more familiar with." I only used "familiar" because it was in Ken's original sentence.
Sorry if my explanation about an "action" was confusing. I was talking about things that people can consciously do. Becoming more familiar with English is not something that you consciously do, it's something that happens naturally as you are exposed to the language. Think of it in the same way as becoming more experienced.

Hi David and everyone
How did you spend your weekend?
For me, I’ve watched 6 movies in these three days. I watched ‘Somewhere in time’ on TV last Friday night, and ‘Legends of fall’, ‘Sleepy hollow’, ‘Monster’ and ‘Perfume: The story of a Murderer’ on TV yesterday, and I went to the movies with my friends today. We watched ‘It’s complicated’ and it is a kind of love comedy. I am a bit tired these days so I need something makes me laugh. After watching movie, we went for a drink as usual. I had a good time.
Hi trmr
It's my pleasure!
take care,

Hi David, Anne and Maki
I got your point when I read your explanations to Ken's question, and I took their(Anne and Maki) words, like this: although I felt the sentences were unnatural(strange), I could not figure out it's because of the matter of "an action or not" until read your explanations.(不自然な英文とは思ったけど、それが"an action or not"のせいとは、Davidの説明を読むまで気づかなかった)
Anne and Maki> If I am wrong, please correct me?
Hi Appoh
Yes, I like movies.
It is nice to go for a drink with friends sometimes and it makes me feel easy.
I see what you mean, it is hard to be watched the Japanese athletes' interviews on TV in the U.S.

I'm looking forward to next figure skating.Skating makes me excited.
Hi Green
I'm sorry to hear that.I can see your feeling because my co-worker were also dead this month, and I also worried about his family.

Hi David,
Thanks again for your explanation about the usage .
Your first explanation wasn't confusing at all, but I got it more clearly.
I'm afraid I couldn't write precisely what I had wanted to say.
When I read Ken's sentence, I just focused on " get familiar with.." or "familiar with..." and didn't pay attention to the whole sentence.
I checked "make/have/let+an object+a bare infinitive(adj)構文",but I couldn't figure it out.
>"Have someone do something" is used to talk about actions that you can order someone to do
→I could not connect this idea and the situation"get(become)familiar with".
The sentence" I help.." is easy to write after getting the answer but was difficult to figure it out.
Hi amo,
Yes, you are right.
I have students memorize ten new words every day.
By the way, you seem to have been soaked in movies last weekend. That's great! I have the same taste with you, so I'm sure you recharged your batteries. I'm planning to watch"It's complicated",maybe next week.
Hi Appoh,

make you guys (to be) into a fountain

Your explanation about "action" wasn't confusing at all. Thanks for your help! When I read Ken's sentences, I also checked "make/have/let" part of grammer books, and I tried to figure out whether I can use those verb with "familiar with" and "get familiar with", but I couldn't. I thought that the second sentence might have been possible, because we use the one like; "生徒達を英語に親しませる" in Japanese. Though it was still unnatural in English.
Anyway, I understand the usage clearly after your second explanation! Thanks again.;-)

Hi team,
Hanoi is getting livelier by the day, and there are so many bikes now that the traffic just looks like a wave coming down the street. I met a woman from Denmark today. She lives in England, and she is travelling around the world by bicycle with her English boyfriend. She said that she fell off her bike in Laos and hit her head, and she had to be taken to Thailand for a CT scan. Anyway, everything was okay, so she is heading up to China next.
Meeting her made me think that I haven't done anything very adventurous for a while. Mind you, I don't think I am tough enough to cycle around the world!

Hello, David
It sounds great that you have had a lot of fun there. I am looking forward to hearing your report.
Also thank you for your comment about my question about the grammar problem. What I wanted to ask and solve is just what you answered.
The reason why I asked it to you is that I need this kind of form when I make teaching plan, like for example if I want to say what purpose each activity is organized I will say like "to have Ss find the grammatical role of be verb". This form is often used to explain each purpose organized in class.
Anyway I am grad that you are willing to answer.

He and we are still friend, and my mother became
a fan of Vietnam.
We have a mysterious story!!
One girl show us the furlomg bay,and we enjoy together. She was the guide who works for Hilton Hotel.
So we asked her adrress, and send letter to her.
After 1 year,my mother visited Hanoi again,and
she tried to see her.
But she was not her!! I mean she told us defferent name and adrress from her real ones...
So we don't who she was!?
It is true story, can you believe it?
David,I hope you have nice time there.

Hi Green,
Yes, I did! I'm going to watch the Women's Figure Skating tomorrow, but to be honest, I know I can't relax at all! Whenever I watch the Women's Figure Skating, I feel I have butterflies in my stomach.
Hi Chiyo,
Your story sounds very mysterious!

Hi Chiyo,
Nice to hear from you again, and thanks for sharing the mysterious story! The first girl was not a real guide, but she did a good job, right?

Hi David
Glad to hear from you.
I have never been to Vietnam. I have been working with some Vietnamese and they keep saying to me to visit Vietnam, so I am interested in Vietnam a bit now. The traffic in Hanoi reminds me of my trip to the Philippines last year. Is that true the blind man crossing the busiest roads? I can believe it!!
By the way, it seems you are having fun there. Hope you have a good time in the rest of your trip.
I am a bit tired today, so I should go to bed.
Good night and sleep tight.
