David,　役に立ちそうなサイトを紹介してくれて有難うございます。ですが、宿題はちょっとできそうにありません。この機会を使って、私、しばらく姿を消します。英語に恋してる今は、英語を書いているとアドレナリンが出てるみたいでもう楽しくてたまりません。でも、仕事があまりはかどらないのでいよいよ本腰を入れるときがきました。先ずは1週間集中してみます。それができたら、もう1週間がんばります。そんなこと言ってもきっと来たくなってしまうかもしれませんが、そのときは宜しくお願いしますね。

I found this in an article about Toyota in a British newspaper (The Daily Telegraph). It's quite scary!

How badly is Toyota being damaged and can it recover?

The brand is being damaged, not because of the recall, but because of the way the company has handled it. It's the car world's biggest consumer debacle for a decade.
Brand Finance, a global brand consultancy, named Toyota the most valuable car brand until recently with a value of $27bn (£17.2bn) and a triple A rating.

I think you should be careful when you see the news delivered by major overseas media. How many of ordinary people do you think read these major papers in the U.S. ? Actually, it's much fewer than you might think. Ordinary people still keep riding Toyota and don't complain too much.

Hi mates,

It's very cold in Yokohama.

I felt chilly last night and I had a runny nose last night. I thought I might catch a old, but when I got up this morning, I felt better.

I ran about twelve kilometers while it was snowing this morning, but it was now heavily.

BTW, I read the web-site which David recommended.

I found three interesting quotations as below:

For the 1), I'd like to do so and I have to try to do so.

Especially, Shakespeare's, because his sayings includes old English words and expressions.

Hi team,

I'm in my hotel room in Hanoi, and the hotel has wifi, so I will be able to check the blog every day. All the students are very excited about being in Vietnam, but they are all quite tired, too, so I think everyone will be in bed soon.

We found out when we arrived that it is the middle of the Vietnamese New Year holiday, so everything is closed and the streets are deserted. Apparently it will stay like this until Thursday.

We are going to visit some Vietnamese university students' homes tomorrow, so I'll let you know how that goes.

Actually while I was reading your comment, I suddendly noticed that I had written really a stupid comment answering David's one.
I should have written this way: I didn't know that Chinese New Year was celebrated in Vietnam.
I found "旧正月" was also celebrated by Koreans,Tibetans,Bhutanese,Mongolians, Okinawans and Vietnamese.

トピックとは全く関係のない話なのですが、質問させてください。
ときどき甥に英語を教えているのですが、教科書の中で疑問に思う文があったので。

イースター島にあるモアイ像を紹介している文です。「These moais are standing on the beach.」となっているんです。なぜこれは現在進行形の文になるのでしょうか？？私の中の現在進行形のイメージは「一時的なこと」というイメージなので、おそらくこれからもずっとその場にあるであろうモアイ像がなぜbe standingになるのかわかりません。「These moais stand on the beach.」ではダメなのでしょうか？中二の英語の教科書なのに、わからなくなっている自分が情けないですが(--;)どなたか、教えてください。

これはモアイ像が今何かをしているように描写してるからじゃないかな？　次の文が 「空を見ている」と「何を考えているんだろう？」になってるし。　実際にはモアイ像は自分の意志で立ってるわけじゃないし、空も見てないし、何も考えてないんだけど、こうやって書くとそれっぽい感じが出るというか・・。　意味分かるかな？（笑）

全体の文章を見るとイメージがつかめますね。分からなくて、おもわずモアイを調べてしまいました＾＾；）
１．まず、ここでは、進行形を覚えるための章ですよね、だから、そのように使われていると思いました。→～standing,～looking,～thinkingとそろえてあるし。
２．These moais stand on the beach.でも間違いではないと思います。
あえて、2つも比較するとすれば。。。
＊These moais stand on the beach.→これらのモアイ像は海岸に立ってます、（今後もず～と）。
Ｔｈｅ　earth goes round the sun.のイメージかな？
＊　These moais are standing on the beach.
→これらのモアイ像は海岸に立っています。（今のところは、でもこの先は分からないよ。）
カッコのイメージの違いかしら？無理にこじつけてみました。
でもやっぱり、Tomoも言っているような事だと思います。
改めて考えてみると、難しいです！

私もＴｏｍｏと同意見です。きっと、現在進行形を使うことによって、モアイ像を擬人化しようとしたんじゃないでしょうか？それによって、その後に続く"they're looking at the sky...."の文章が活きてきますよね？
ってもうすでに、解決済みですね。
でも、Makiが言うように、中学英語でそこまでを望まないで欲しいですよね？もっと簡単なことからはじめてくれればいいのにね？

ありがとうございます！納得しました。ホント、中学生にはもっとわかりやすくしてもらいたいです。あらためて中学生の英語を見直すと、正直な話、『なんで？』と思うことが多々あります。とくに動詞。当然ながら新しい動詞が次々登場しますが、過去形から登場することが多いんです。私としては、まず原型を覚えて、そのあとで過去形を覚える方が頭に入りやすいんじゃないかと思うんですが…。

もしかしてＡｍｉｃａさんの甥っ子さんが使っているのは「Ｎｅｗ　Ｃｒｏｗｎ」という教材ですか？
私も何年か前に生徒にモアイの単元を教えたような記憶がよみがえってきました。そのとき現在形と現在進行形の違いを伝えるのに苦労したのを思い出します。
Ａｍｉｃａさんの言うとおりもう少し教材の内容を吟味してほしいなぁとその時はいろんな点で思いました。

普通、最初に状態動詞の進行形を教える場合、「動かせるもの、運んできたものには進行形を使って一時的な状態で動かないこと（tand still)を表す」と説明します。

ですから、辞書にもあります通り、
not move[intransitive] to stay in a particular place without moving
The car's been standing in the garage for weeks.
The train was already standing at the platform.　とか、

a floor lamp is standing in the room. とは、言いますが、

Buildings are standing on Manhattan Island. は、変なのだと思います。

モアイ像の場合は、その場で立てられたのではなく、運ばれてきたのは、中学生にも分かりますから、

These moais are standing on the beach.　と教えるのだと思います。老婆心ながら。

Hi team,

I'm still in Hanoi, and it's still cold! None of us had expected that Vietnam would be cold, so we were all a bit surprised. Of course, it's warmer than Nagoya is at the moment, but not much!
Things are still pretty quiet here because of the New Year holiday, but last night we went for a walk around the tourist area in the centre of the city, and that was a bit more lively.
The students Vietnamese language lessons start tomorrow, so we are all going to the college where they will be studying for a welcome lunch today. I'm not sure what's happening after that, but I guess we will probably all go out for dinner again. Apparently, life here will return to normal tomorrow.

甥の教科書は「NEW HORIZON」です。まだ中一なのだけど、授業ではすでに中二の教科書に入っていて、進むスピードが速くて大変です。冬休みの間にかなり先まで進んで教えてあったのに、あっという間に授業に抜かされてしまいました…。あまり賢くない甥なので（笑）、3歩すすんで2歩さがる、というふうにつねに復習しながら教えているので、しかたないのですが。いかに彼にわかりやすく教えるかが私の課題です。でも私がきちんと理解していないので、教えているというより、一緒に勉強している、という感じかな＾＾；これからも助けてくださいね。

今回の文章では、stand/ are standingのニュアンスの違いは次のようになるのでは、と言うのが現時点での私の理解しているところです。
*are standing---it is like a video
(ビデオをまわしているような感じ）
*stand----------is like a snapshot or photograph
(その場面を切り取って写したような感じ）

まさしく、最初に教えていただいた、状態動詞、、『動かせるもの、運んできたものには進行形を使って一時的な状態で動かないこと（tand still)を表す」と説明します』に戻っていくと思いました。

Hi David and everyone,
Man's figure skating has just finished now and Daisuke Takahashi won the Bronze medal!!
I was glued to TV today and my heart was pounding while I was watching their sking ,I mean,Japanese skaters. I'm relieved and am glad for the result.
When I heard his interview and saw him at the ceremony, I cried!
Nobunari Oda and Kozuka also did very well; it was unlucky that Oda's shoelaces were broken.
I also enjoyed watching Johnny Weir's elegant skating...

By the way,David, in Vietnam, how do the newspaper report Olympics? I understand news articles vary depending on each country. I'm curious to know about it.

Sorry, I',m so excited now, so my writing must be weird.
