Final Editing

Hi team,

I spent all day today working on the books again. I had to go to the printing company this afternoon, and I was there until about 9 p.m. The final stages of putting a book together are the most stressful, and it's impossible to really take a break because you just end up thinking about the books whatever you are doing.

A few days ago, I finished laying out all the pages so that they looked good. It might sound easy, but getting everything to fit in the right place is a huge job. Anyway, when I had finished, I was about to go to bed happy, and I decided to have one last look through the file. As I scrolled through it, I saw a page that had only two lines on it! It was a horrible feeling. I couldn't work out whether I had deleted something by mistake, or whether I had just missed that page when I was doing the layout. I had to go back through the old files to find out. It turned out that I had just missed it, so everything after that point had to be redone. The mistake was in the "M" section, so I had to redo about half the book.

Today, I was checking all the key words, and I realized that the same key word had been put in twice. I started to panic, but then I realized that the second one was actually a different key word with the wrong title, so it only took me ten seconds to fix it.

Anyway, that is what my life is like at the moment - just living in fear that I have made a horrible mistake somewhere that is going to come to light later and wreck the schedule. I'll be glad when it's over!

Thanks to all of you who offered to help with the checking. I will send you pdf files of the book either tomorrow night or Thursday morning.

Wow, Making a book is really tough!!

I know it’s different but I have worked as a proof reader once. I remember that it took a long time to make a book. I always worried about that I had overlooked mistakes.

Hello David and everyone

I came back to Japan from Guam about a week ago.
It was a lot of fun more than I expected first.
However as I thought first most tourists going there seemed Japanese, so I heard Japanese everywhere I went. Also people living in Guam, especially shop workers or people in charge of Japanese tourists, can speak Japanese, but their Japanese have distinctive accent which made me difficult to understand what they were saying.

Also I understand what you mean, David.
Because I write a graduation paper at my University, and I sometimes faced this situation where I thought once I had completed to write one chapter, but actually when reading again after handing to my proffecer I found something I had to rewrite.
That made me tired a little, but which has been good experience for me.

I heard that "any" has negative meaning and nomally "any" is used for countable nouns, if so below sentence is not correct?

"Please let me know if you have any questions."

I often see above sentence in email at work.

Can I share my idea about the usage "any" with you?
As you mentioned, "any" is often used in negative clauses,but there are a lot of other usages.

>"Please let me know if you have any questions."
The meaning of this sentence is "もし何か質問があったら【どんなものでも】私に知らせてください。" and if you would dare to write" if you have some questions" instead, the meaning would be"もしなにか質問があったら." So, the sentence here is apparently correct.
You often see a sentence below:
*Address all questions,if any, to me.
(質問があったら私に聞いてください。）

It's just my understanding so I'm not sure if it is true or not.

What do you think members?

*any には否定文と共に使うだけでなく様々な用法があると思います。if と共に用いて、「何でもいいから。。」の意味を表すと理解しました。ですから、後半のif...someは可能なのかどうか確かではありません。

Speaking of this question "any", I have some idea. When I read this book called "ハートで感じる英文法" written by Onishi sensei, I found something interesting about it.
"Any" is used when you have kindness for someone. I am afraid that it is difficult to explain but let me try to do.
"Any" has this feeling to have you have choices you like. I mean those two types of sentences, I think, show the difference of meaning.

If you have any question, ask me.
If you have some question, ask me.

First one means it is kind of exected that anyone ask question, but second one means it is not expected that someone asks question.

Is that right?? I would rather ask those.

Hello, I noticed I misunderstood when I read the book again.

the book said if you are told by a teacher like "any help?"the meaning of which includes that you have choices which is something like what you want to solve specifecally.
On the other hands, the meaning of "some help" means just the way to ask someone whether he or she has a question or not.

Though it would be wrong in terms of explanation in English, Thank you for reading.

どこかの本でも読んだことがありますが、any, someを日本語で表せば、
ａｎｙ：　なんでもいい何か
some：　なんだか知らない何か　とするのが基本です。

ですから、
Any questions? は、（なんでもいいから）何か質問は？ですし、
Some questions?は、（なんだか分からないけれど）何か質問は？の意味になります。

代表的な例は、
Is there anything to eat?は、「何か食べるものある？」で、
お腹をすかした子供が、家に帰ってきて、なんでもいいから「何か食べるものある？」と聞く場合ですし、

Is there something to eat?は、「何か食べるものある　の？」（最後の「の」が重要）で、
子供が家に帰ってきて、いい料理の匂いがしている時、何か食べるものがあるのは分かっているが、何かは分からない場合に、「なんだか知らないけど、何か食べるものがあるの？」と聞く場合です。

この基本的なanyとsomeの違いから、後から定義づけた文法では、さまざまに解釈して、疑問文，否定文はany，平常文，肯定文はsome、条件文で疑いが強い場合はanyといったものになっているのだと思います。

この基本的な違いに気をつければ、anyとsomeを含んだ文の正しい解釈は可能だと信じます。

正確に覚えていませんでしたので、どこかの本として、出典を明記できませんでしたが、この解説（この「の」も含みます）は、別宮貞徳氏著の「実践翻訳の技術」からの受け売りで、この分野（翻訳の世界）ではかなり有名なものの一つです。お気づきの方も多数いらっしゃったとは思いますが、全く私の発案ではありませんので、誤解なさらぬようにお願いいたします。
