May Seminar

Hi team,

Thanks for your comments. A friend in Tokyo showed me how Twitter works, and it basically just seems to be a real-time blog. People apparently use it to send short messages telling other people what they are doing. I don't know whether it would be interesting for me to do it or not, but I'll try it in April as an experiment, and then any of you who sign up can tell me whether you think I should carry on.

On Friday, I met Tomo in Tokyo, and we went to book the room for the May seminar. Tomo is going to post the details of booking and cost later, so I will just give you the outline of the content.

Tomo and I decided that it is better to do a half-day seminar starting in the afternoon because there are some people who will be coming a long way. If we started in the morning, those people would have to come the night before, which would make it more difficult for them to attend.

We have booked the seminar room for four hours, and I'm planning to do two sessions. (I'll decide the exact timing and the length of breaks on the day when I see how everyone is feeling.)

In the first session, we will discuss how to get the most benefit from taking part in the blog. I will ask everyone to choose one past entry that they liked, print it out 'with all the comments', and then bring it to the seminar. Those printouts will be our learning materials.

In the second session, we will focus on principles of vocabulary learning. I will give you a crash course based on the textbook that I wrote for university students, and everyone will get a copy of the book as a present. After I have shown you how to use it, it will be easy for you to continue studying on your own.

Tomo and I did not make a firm booking because we are not sure of the numbers, but I'm hoping for something between 10 and 20. The seminar is open to anyone who reads this blog (not only the regular commenters), so please feel free to come along (and bring friends) if you are interested.

Bye for now,

David

PS Some of you have commented previously that I seem to witness an unusually high number of dangerous driving incidents in Japan. On Friday, as Tomo and I left the hotel, a taxi pulled out into the traffic without looking and another car smashed into it. It made a very loud noise!

Hi David,
Are you starting Twitter as an experiment?
To be honest, I'm not sure it's interesting or not, but I'd like to join!
By the way, I'm really looking forward to the seminar and starting in the afternoon sounds nice.
>Tomo,
I'll email you later.

By the way, while I was writing comment, David uploaded new entry, so I left the comment on the previous entry. Can I share it again here?
( I wrote my comment directly on the blog without a rough copy thinking this and that...it took much time to finish, haha.)

Here is my comment I posted on the previous entry:
Hi tusneko,
Glad to see your comment here again!
I read the story you mentioned on the web, but I still don't feel the need to use it at the moment . As amo said, I can email with my friends... I'm not sure I would change my mind though...

Hi Maki,
As Tomo said, I think both 'try to..' and 'try ..ing' make sense.
*I've never tried using Twitter because I was not interested in it / I didn't care...
*I've never felt the need to try Twitter.
*I found a reason to try Twitter.

Hi Appoh,
I didn't have any idea about the differences you mentioned. What I can say is that you can replace each phrase almost all cases with 'about' and it is used casually.
When you get some more information, please let us know!
Tomo, thanks for detailed information.

Hi Gussan,
As you said, you(Japanese) are not accustomed to use "You too." Anyway, if you visualize the whole sentence, it is easy to understand, right?
Nice to meet you. It's nice to meet you too.
You too.

See you soon,

Anne

Hi David,
Yes, it was a very loud noise! I'm glad both drivers didn't get serious injury, but I was really surprised when I heard that bang!
By the way, we are going to use past entries and comments as our learning materials at the seminar? That sounds interesting, but it's difficult for me to choose just one! Anyway, I'll do it by the time of the seminar.

Hi Chiyo,
You are welcome:) It's exciting, isn't it? I really hope you can join us!

Hi Appoh,
It was good study for me, so thank you, too! As Anne said, please let us know when you figure it out.

Hi Tsuneko,
Nice to hear from you!! I'm looking forward to meeting you at the May seminar.(If you can make it;-))

Hi Anne,
And thanks for sharing your idea on the difference between "try to do" and "try doing". To be honest, I didn't think of the difference when I wrote " I've never tried using them" because I just copied David's sentence, ha ha..

Hi everyone,
As David said, the seminar is open to anyone who reads this blog, so I'm(we're all!) looking forward to meeting a lot of new people!

See you soon,

Tomo

Thanks, Tomo, for the update of the seminar. I’ve already marked the day on my calendar. I can’t wait for meeting you all in May!

Hi David and Tomo,

It sounds nice that the seminar will start in the afternoon. I'm really looking forward to it!;-)

Hi Tomo and Anne,

Thank you for your help! My grammar book has almost the same explanations as Tomo's and I wondered whether "try to~" expressed more about "試そうと思ったことがない". However, "try ~ing+because" makes sense, as Anne said. Thanks again!:-)

Hi Appoh,

I didn't take it seriously at all, sorry. I just thought that it was a good opportunity to study it.;-)

Hi tsuneko,

Glad to hear from you!! Everything is going well? Hope you also will attend the seminar in May.

Bye for now,

Maki

Hi Lily & Maki,
Lily, me, too! I've already marked the day on my calendar;-)
Maki, you are welcome:)
I'm also looking forward to the May seminar and party! I can't wait!!

Hi David and everyone,
Good morning. How are you? Hope you enjoyed the three-day weekend. There is an orientation for new year students and their parents at my son's high school today, so I have to go there. If you e-mail me to book the seminar, I will reply to you at night.

Talk to you later,

Tomo

PS Amo, I sent you an e-mail with the link of the homepage of the hotel. Did you get it?

Hi Anne,
I say 'You, too' every day.
It goes like:
'Have a good day !' 'You, too!'

Hi Tomo,
I'm sorry I can't go to the seminar.

Hi Maki,
I know. I'll let you know when I get 'in terms of ' things right.

Hi David and Tomo

Thank you for your help.I didn't think a party after the seminar,soI'm very surprised. You have a nice idea.Sounds great.
As I said,I don't know if I have to work on the same day.Maybe it's difficult for me to attend the seminar...I'm really sorry.

Nao

Hi Green

Koichi played 'Endless shock' 700 times??Amazing! He is great.

Hi team

I'm back.London was wonderful.I had a lovely time.I want to go back soon.

My trip was nice, but I had some trouble. For example, the subway to the airport was suddenly shut down.I almost missed a flight,so I was very upset.I repeated a word of Heathrow Airport many times!I think Heathrow Airport is a word I used the best in London. Thanks to kind station staff,I could go to the airport.
By the way,I thought most British people are very kind.I had a good time thanks to them.
This trip helped my studing English because I spoke English many times.
Anyway I enjoyed it!

Nao

Hi David, Tomo and everyone,

Thank you for your arrangement for the seminar.
Sounds perfect! I usually don't feel much Tokyo is far from Kobe, but it sure is. My mom in law has been hospitalized in an ICU recently, and I can't get to know how the situation would be in May.

I really want to make it. I've just read Nao's article that gave me a hint (Thanks, Nao!): Can I also ask you not to count me in at the moment, and if the situation allows me, can you let me join at the last minute? Or counting me in fisrt, and then canceling if need arises, would be easier for you? Anyway, I know both the cases would be troublesome for the organaizers. Really sorry for it. Tonight, I'm talking to Fusae, too on the phone.

Bye for now.

p.s. I'm happy I'm back. While I was away, I realized keeping on posting constantly was really tough, so all of regulars are fantastic.

Maki, thanks for your comment! I'm still concentrating on my job, so I'll try to post comments at least once a week.

Anne, also thanks for the comment. As for Twitter, you've changed your mind so fast that showed you're young enough to try new things. So good!

Nao, welcome back! You seem to have had a wonderful time in London as well. I'm happy for you.

Hi team,

I got the new books today. The red one looks really good, but I was very nervous when I looked at it for the first time!

Anyway, if you are one of the people who helped me with the proofreading, please email me your postal address so that I can send you a copy of the book.

Thanks again for all your help.

Hi David,
You got the new book today? I hope you feel happy now!
Anyway, I'll email you my postal address later.

Hi Nao,
Welcome back! You seems to have had a great time in London. Glad to hear that you didn't miss the flight.

Hi tsuneko,
Sorry to hear about your mother-in-law.
As for Twitter, it's not because I'm young but because I just want to read David's twitter,haha...

Hi Appoh,
You say 'You too' everyday? If I have a chance, I'll say that.

Hi Maki,
You are welcome. By the way, I made a mistake.
I found a reason→I didn't find a reason..
Thanks to you question, it was good for me to think about "try to.." and "try..ing."

Good night,

Anne

Hi David

Thank you for booking. A program of seminar sounds good. And a party after seminar sounds good also! And congratulations for completion of printing your new book!

You start twitter, don't you? It's nice! I'm on twitter and looking forward to see your tweet (comments posted on twitter are called that). I'm enjoying twitter because there are many famous people and they post their comments their own. I'm enjoying read their comments rather than posting my comments.

Hi Tomo

Thank you for information. I want to join the seminar. But I must work on some certain Saturday in year. Tomorrow, I check whether the seminar day is the day I must work. Do you mind if I send a mail late at night?

Hi tsuneko

I'm glad to hear you again. Please post comments on your own pace :-)
I hope your mother in law become well.

Hi Nao

Welcome back! You had a horrible experience! I think it will change to a good memory. I'm happy for you that you had a good time in London.

trmr

Hi David

You got the new books today!! That's exciting!
I can't wait to see it.

Hi Tomo

thank you for sending me an email.
I tried to reply to you, but I failed, so I will email you using another email address.
bye the way, I will coming the seminar.

Hi everyone,

sorry, but I am very busy at work. I do not have time to read all comment.

good night

P. S.

Hi Tsuneko,
welcome back, I am glad to see your name.

Hi Nao,
Glad to hear you had a wonderful time in London! You almost missed your flight? That must have been a terrible feeling, but I'm glad you didn't:) I enjoyed reading your trip report. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Tsuneko,
I'm sorry to hear about your mother-in-law. I understand your situation. I hope she gets better soon.

Nao & Tsuneko,

Hi trmr,
Of course, I don't mind at all:) I hope you can make it!

Hi amo,
I thought there was something wrong with your e-mail, so that's why I left you the message here. Anyway, I'm glad to hear you are coming!

I'm very tired today, so I'm going bed now. Good night, everyone zzz...

Tomo

Hi Nao,

Welcome back!
And I'm glad you had a great time in London and you were in time for the flight!
I think your English have been improve.

I watched 'Endless SHOCK' March 16th,17th and 22th.
Especially Koich was good in mood on 22th I think.
His smilling face makes us happy, isn't it!

Hi tsuneko,

Welcome back!

Hi Tomo,

I'm going to access your e-mail address later!

Green

Hi Tomo,

Thank you for explanation. I'll email you at the above address tomorrow, anyway. Please wait for a while.

Hi amo,

Thank you! I was missing hearing you saying you are very busy.:# Take a good care not to catch a cold.

Hi trmr,

Thank you! Yes, I will keep it on my own pace.;) I've changed my mind. I'm going to post as often as possible, but each comment will be shorter than before.

Hi Anne,

You#we) are young@heart forever.;) right?

Hi Green,

Thank you! You seem to have been enjoying yourself very much.:)

Bye for now.

Hi team,
I went to see NBA game after work today.
It was a really close game but finally DC's home team lost after an overtime. This is my first time to see a professional basketball game. I don't know this sport very much but I enjoyed it because there were a lot of interesting attractions in every time-out.
I'm thinking I will see baseball and ice hockey.
I'm happy because spring has come.
Bye for now.

Hi tsuneko

Long time no see!I'm glad to know your back, but I'm sorry about your mother-in-low.
I hope she get better soon.

Nao

Hi Nao,

Hi tsuneko,

I'm sorry to hear about your mother-in-law. I hope she will get better soon.

Bye for now,

Maki

Morning, David and everyone!

Hi Nao and Maki,

Thank you for your words! My mom in law has so great guts that I'm sure she gets better once again and gets rid of the ICU. If she can make it before May Seminar, I'd fly to Tokyo to see you all. Until I can see you,

Have a nice day.

Hi trmr and tsuneko,

I sent you the details of the hotel, so please check it later.

trmr, I'm looking forward to meeting you at the May seminar!

tsuneko, I hope your mother-in-low gets out of the ICU soon and we can get together in May!

Hi everyone!

I couldn't meke time to join your seminar..
Because I have to go work by 3pm,I don't think I can
stay there even for one hour.
You all who can meet together are so lucky!!
Have a great seminar, and I hope I can make time for next one.

Also,to Tsuneko san

I hope your mother in law get well soon, too!
When my father had got in ICU,the docter said
You can be relax because ICU is the special room to care
people,so we can save him as soon as he hats mad.

Hi Tomo

Thank you for your warm comment!I also hope I'll attend the next seminar.

Hi Maki

Thank you!I felt happy when I arrived at the airport.
I was worried about my English, weather and food when I was in Japan, but everything is no ploblem apart from the troble,so I want to go there again:)

Nao

Hi Tomo,

I got the mail and the venue is perfect with me.:)

Hi Chiyo,

Thank you for your powerful encouragement and you expressed it very well! Please call me just tsuneko next time that would make me happy.;)
p.s. My mom's name is same as yours.

Hi Chiyo,

Me again. I read your comment again and I noticed the phrase of "he hats mad" was new to me. I guess it meant "悪くなる", right?

Hi Tsuneko

I mistook the spell..
"He gets mad"I wanted to write!
I'm sorry.

My name is same as your mother's!?
Well I know my name is very old one:)
So I didn't like mine before,but now,I love it!

Hi Chiyo,

I got it. I like your name too because it sounds fresh and new again in the young generation.
