Tachiyomi

Hi team,

Thanks for your comments.

The discussion about "impressive" is interesting. English has a huge vocabulary, and many of the words have very specific nuances and usages that you cannot possibly understand simply by translating them into Japanese. Someone told me a very interesting quotation the other day, but he couldn't remember who said it:

Nothing should be written that hasn't been read;
Nothing should be spoken that hasn't been heard.

This is actually very true in relation to language learning.

Of course, it is important for language learners to experiment, but it is also important to remember that translating a Japanese adjective that you want to use will almost never result in an appropriate English sentence. The only way that you can really learn how to use words like "impressive" and "profound" is by being exposed to lots of examples of natural usage. If you are not confident about how a word is used (in other words, unless you have seen or heard numerous examples of its usage), it is much better to just use simple adjectives like "great" and "interesting."

This week's topic is "tachiyomi." I was very surprised when I came to Japan to see that conveniences stores allow people to stand for long periods of time and just read magazines. If you let people do that, surely they will never buy anything!

Yesterday, I went to the 7-11 near Nanzan Seto (where I used to work), and there were about 10 or 12 students standing reading mangas. There were so many of them that they were completely blocking the aisle, so everyone had to walk down another aisle to get to the drinks. They were quite obviously just waiting for the train from Yamaguchi station, and I would be very surprised if any of them actually bought anything. Of course, the shop staff didn't say anything at all. If it was my shop, I would have thrown them all out! (Actually, one of my dreams is to run a Seicomart in Hokkaido, so maybe that day will come.)

Over the last few years, I have noticed that more and more magazines are being wrapped in plastic to prevent tachiyomi. As a publisher, I think this is a really good idea. If you think about it, tachiyomi is really a kind of stealing. Publishers pay a lot of money to produce magazines and comics, so if you want to read them, you should buy the magazine.

Anyway, I was just wondering what you all think about this.

Anyway, talking about "tachiyomi."

I myself, I don't have the nerve to read book without buying, so I can't understand that.
I sometimes see that situation in convenience store as David mentioned.
It is uncomfortable to see it.
When I see it I feel like attacking them but needless to say I don't have the nerve to do that.
Finally I realized myself that I am a coward. ahah ;->

Hi David and everyone,

It was rainy and a bit chilly today. My daughter is going on a school picnic tomorrow, but the weather forecast for tomorrow is not good. According to it, it's going to rain again, so my daughter made some “teruteru bouzu”s. She made 10 and wrote a different face on each of them, and she was singing the song “て～るて～るぼ～ず♪” many times. She is really looking forward to the picnic, so I hope her wish comes true!

As for the topic, I don't use conveniences stores very often, so I'm not sure but I think a lot of people use conveniences stores as a meeting spot or to kill time. Most of people working at a convenience store are just part-timers, so I think it's difficult for them to throw those bad customers out. I also think it's a good idea to wrap magazines in plastic to prevent tachiyomi, but if all the books at a book store were wrapped in plastic, I wouldn't been happy because I want to check the content of a book before I get.

Talking about the topic, I sometimes go to convenience stores and see people just read magagines there, but it seems that there is a reason why they allow people to read them. I've heard about that before. Do you think why a magagine section is usually at a place which you can see from outside? I'm not sure it's true or not, but if you can see customers inside stores, that makes people feel free to go into them, they think.
I'm wondering if you can understand what I mean?!
Anyway, I don't read magagines often, but I do also "tachiyomi" when I want to read only one article in a magazine at book stores.:-)

About "tachiyomi",I have to admit I do it occasionally just for killing time when waiting for a friend,maybe 5 or 10 minutes,never longer. I do see people standing at a conveniences store reading magazines and comics all the time,and wonder why they don't feel ashamed,if I'm the shop owner, I would throw those people out,but most Japanese are too polite to do that.I hope you will be a brave owner.

David, thank you for your advice concerning the usage of the words "impressive"," profound" and language learning.
「見聞きしない言葉は話されることもないし書かれる事もない。」
I'll keep in mind this sentence and it's my homework to pay attention yo how these two words are actually used in the articles.

As for the topic, when I go to a convenience store nearby my house around 4 o'clock in the afternoon, there are a lot of high school students; some are standing reading mangas and some are just just talking with their friends.
I'm not sure ,but as Maki said, there is a good reason that the shop staff don't throw them out. The owner of the shop expect them to buy drinks ,snacks, and some other things.
I'm not happy if all the magazines are packed because I want to buy the magazine after checking I want to read it or not.

OK, I’ll do my homework too. I’ve seen “impressive” only in a book on conversation written in Japanese and never been exposed to any example in authentic English. As for “profound”, I’ve been exposed just once to an example, like “profound anemia （ひどい貧血）, in a novel which Anne introduced on her blog. Now, I’m looking forward to seeing or hearing numerous examples of its natural usage. Thanks a billion!

I like tachiyomi. If I have time, I could stay all day. There is a 7-11 nearby but it is very small and no space for tachiyomi. Also, a small book shop is in one-minute walk but an old not-at-all-friendly female shop keeper always is sitting so it’s difficult to tachiyomi. I occasionally go to a big book store with some space to rest and drink and then enjoy tachiyomi. I usually buy a number of books or magazines one time, so I am a good customer for them and publishers as well. :)

I also wish it will not rain and her picnic will not be cancelled.

I'm all for you, but, as for tachiyomi in conviniences stores, it is hard for the owners to wrap every magazines in plastic because it really costs them. I think they want everyone to come to the store, even if they come for just reading magazines. Some people come to the store and do tachiyomi for just doing tachiyomi, and others not.

I agree with you. Few days ago, I went to convenience store to buy a magazine. But because all of magazines which I want to buy were being read by "tachiyomi" people, I couldn't buy and had to go another store.I think we have to pay for it if we find a value in it.
In the case as a trial, "tachiyomi" is okay, I think. Some book stores wrap books and put a part of the book for a trial reading. It is good idea.

As trmr mentioned, there is an ideal book shop for both themselves and customers in 15 minutes by bus, where they offer each copy of magazines to let customers freely take a look. The each sample is “boro-boro”, but we don’t have to feel guilty and can buy totally clean magazines. Besides, shop staff regularly go round and tidy up magazines. That avoids people from losing their conscience. If shop staff treat their items very carefully, so do the customers.

In my neighbourhood, there is a banana shop and lots of strange sign boards, at least 30 pieces of cards, beside each bunch of bananas. You see on each card, “Don’t touch banana!” We call the shop “触るなバナナ”. At first, I felt it was too strict to approach there. Later on, after I had a chat with the shop keeper about the card, I constantly buy their bananas, because their banana taste very good and he knows about bananas very well.

Maki, Ling, Anne, Tsuneko, and Trmr, thanks for all your wishes for my daughter. Unfortunately, it's rainy today too. When my daughter got up and checked outside the window this morning, she sighed and said, "I should have made more “teruterubouzu”s..." But don't worry, she will have another chance to go there next month though the date is not confirmed yet. The school will held their field day in May, so their schedule is very tight, but I hope the first graders can have the picnic sometime next month. Maybe I should make 15 teruterubouzu dolls for that day!(笑)

It's interesting to read everyone's thought. I also think the owners of a convenience store expect people doing tachiyomi to buy drinks, snacks, or some other things.
Trmr mentioned 見本. I see some sample copies for people to read at bookstores. I also think it's a good idea. I sometimes go to big bookstores, and some of them have a place for children to read. There are small tables, chairs, and a lot of books that kids can feel free to read and play. I love this idea!

I've heard of some electronic books, but I didn't know the name "Kindle". Is it becoming more popular in the US? I looked on the Internet about "Kindle", and they say it also can read aloud the electronic books you have downloaded on your Kindle. I prefer paper books, but I think it's useful for elderly or blind people.

What weather is it in your town?

About today's topic 'tachiyomi'.
I do tachiyomi at least 6 times a month.
Some TV magazines are soled every wednesdays and some my fovorite magazines 7th and 23th every months.
Without check them,I can't be calm.
Of course I buy one of TV magazines and one of other magazined.
If I have a lot of money,I'd like to buy all of them.
I have to choose of ultimate!（究極の選択と書きたかったのですが・・・）

I've hear that there are bookstores that customers can choose books sitting and coffee in America.
(アメリカに、座ってコーヒーを飲みながら、本を選べる書店があると聞いたことがあります。と書きたかったのですが、自信がありません・・・）

I often do ‘tachiyomi’ and even ‘suwariyomi’ to see if a book is worth buying. Has anyone been to a book & café, where you can read books (without buying) sitting and sipping, say, cappuccino?
One of my favorites is TSUTAYA BOOK STORE - STARBUCKS COFFEE. You could hang around the forest of book shelves with a Honey orange laté or you could read books and magazines sitting in a sofa and sipping cappuccino. It’s really relaxing!
As for convenience stores, I’ve heard that those who are standing reading magazines are the best anti-crime measure, in particular, during the night.

I've never been to a book ＆cafe, but I've heard of it. If there is TSUTAYA BOOK STORE-STARBUCKS　COFFEE in Nagoya, I'd love to read books there!

A lot of bookstores put chairs for customers doing "chottomi" or "tachiyomi" and I sometimes(or often?) do tachiyomi at bookstores.

It's difficult to translate “究極の選択” into English. "Ultimate choice" came to my mind, but I wouldn't use this expression. I would say...

It's a tough choice! / It's really hard for me to chose just one!

I've never been to a bookstore like that. That sounds lovely! There is a Tsutaya bookstore and a Starbucks Coffee in my town, but they are in(on?) different places. That's a shame!

That makes lots of sense. They can be decoys to call other people as Maki mentioned, and also be security guards.

Anne, Tomo, he also wrote big "触る人には売らない店". 店中に「触るなバナナ」の文字だらけで、どんなに偏屈なオヤジさんかと避けて通りましたが、実は「バナナ命」の誠実な方で、いろいろな産地のバナナや、もう腐る寸前の茶色いバナナも安く売っています。爽やかで濃厚で美味しいです：）

I went for a drink with some people from work, and got home quite late last night. I think I drunk too much, so I had a hint of hangover today and was sleepy during the day.
Speaking of this week’s topic, my thought is the same as Jazmin. I am sure they (the people who standing reading magazines) are annoying during the day but they turn into the security guards or something like that at night. That is one of the reasons to let people do that, I suppose.

Kazu, thanks for a lovely poem. I like it because it is rhyming. It sounds as if I can see each face of them. From your song, I imagined lots of bananas were piled like a mountain often seen in South East Asia, but in fact, he never puts a bunch of bananas on top of another ones. He put each bunch in a basket and put them side by side on the counter. Even cheap almost-spoiled ones are also in a basket and put on the ground in front of the shop, so you can see all their faces.^^) By the way, have you already got a "Kindle" which Appoh mentioned?

amo, you quite often go for a drink.;) What do you usually like to drink?

Sam, Tomo, thunder and lightning around 3:30 this morning? I didn't notice that at all, either. I'm wondering where you live? I remember last night's weather report said it would have thunder and lightning in some area in Kansai, but I don't remember the name.

Many Johnny's members performe in it.
My daughter especially likes 屋良朝幸.
He is a member of MA that is one of Johnny's dance unit.I think he is the best dancer in Johnny's.
(He performes 'Endless SHOCK' that 堂本光一 plays the leading part.)
滝沢秀明 puts on　歌舞伎 女形 makeup on the stage.
He is beautiful without makeup but he become more beautiful with makeup and kimono.
Audience can watch the process,殺陣 scenes and 和太鼓　performance.
I think foreigners like it .
Every Johnny's members train themselves for dancing,acrobat,singing and acting very hard.
If you have a chace to watch Johnny's members play or concert, I reary want you watch them!

My daughter and my next plesures are 'テゴマス　concert' in June!
('テゴマス' means 手越祐也&増田貴久.They are members of NEWS.)

Hi, everyone!!

I went to Osaka to be interviewed for VISA.
It has been so long time since I went there.
We lost the way and had an appointment at 10:30, so we ware concerned about late, only to find a taxi and had it go there. It was 10:31 when we arrived. Soooooo stupid we were.
As a result, we could manage it that we were fortunate.

After that we went and look around Osaka, Tutenkaku, Dotonbori and Shinkyobashi.

Is there anyone living in Osaka?
I found those girls who criticized people's fashion going through in front of them like "she is cut, oh her fashin is strange because ..." with loud voice.
Also I found barbershop where you can have your hair cut by 700 yen, then I said "Too cheap and they must cut your hair Kakugari." After that they suddenly talked to me like "You should try to have yours cut there." in Osaka dialect.
I was sure that it was TUKKOMI!!

This is what I experienced yesterday. I mean that I just want to share my story.

Ken - Glad to know you were on time. You went to American embassy or consulate, right? By the way, 700 yen is very cheap! The cheapest barbar shop in our place which my husband goes charges 850 yen, but their service is much better than some famous 1,000 yen hair cut shops because they do shampoo as well and never use vacuum cleaner, he said.

I happened to know that Trader Joe's Echo- Bags are becoming popular in Japan.
Is it true ? Do you know why that is ?

I also read the article saying that some importers are selling the bags and make quite a profit because it's very difficult to get them in Japan.

Anyway, if so, I'll get some at my nearest Trader Joe's supermarket and bring them back to Japan and deliver for free. Then, I might be appreciated.
