George Rekers
Hi team,
The weather is not very good today, but it was beautiful all weekend, so I'm not complaining.
Tonari san finished his race safely, but the result was not as good as he had been hoping for. He has not raced very much on this new bike yet, though, and he was getting faster all the time, so we're looking forward to the next time. Here are two pictures I took:
Tonari san's new bike is 1000cc, and it is very, very fast. I got scared just watching the bikes go past! The 1000cc bikes are so fast that as they go over the hill on the back straight at Suzuka, their front wheels lift a bit, which must be pretty scary at 270/280 km/h!
I have given my 600cc race bike to Masaki san. The deal is that he is going to take care of it, and both of us can ride it. I haven't even started the engine for about a year and a half, so it needed to be checked by a proper mechanic. He is also repairing all the crash damage (from the previous owner) and giving it a new paint job. I'll show you a picture of it when it is ready.
This is the last week before the seminar. Tomo said that there are 10 people coming to the seminar, and 12 to the party, so it should be fun. If you are coming to the seminar, please choose any past entry that you liked, print it out (with all the comments), and bring it with you. (You don't need to make copies for everyone.) Please also bring a pencil and a bilingual dictionary.
The plan for the seminar is that we will do two sessions. In the first, we are going to look at ways for you to get the most benefit from taking part in this blog. In the second, we will do a crash course in the basic principles of learning English vocabulary. This will be based on my book "Learning English Vocabulary," and I will bring copies of that for everyone. (For those of you who don't know, "copy" is used in English to count books. It does not mean 写し.)
If you are coming to the seminar, you might find it useful to read the foreword to my book. It was written by a very famous teacher and researcher called Paul Nation. You can see his foreword at http://www.btbpress.com/book/Foreword%20by%20Paul%20Nation.pdf
This week's topic is a really strange story that has been going around America this week. It's very interesting, but rather than explain it to you, I want you to use the Internet to find out for yourselves. Go to Google.com, and click on "news." From that page, search for news articles on "George Rekers." I'm sure you will learn a lot of new vocabulary from reading these articles, and I'm looking forward to hear what you think about the story.
Anyway, I have to get back to work. I will do the feedback entry on Thursday.
Bye for now.

Hi David and everyone,
When I read news articles on Prof. Rekers, what came up my mind was a proverb in Japanese. But I didn't know what it is called in English. So I looked up the expression and I found it out. It is "Many go out for wool and come home shorn."

Hi David and everyone,
I'm glad to hear Tonari san finished his race safely, and thanks for sharing the nice pictures. He looks good in that bike suit:) Did he race on that 1000cc bike? The mufflers are big and look like a rocket! It must be very fast, but the racers did at 270/280 km/h?? Nooo, I can't imagine that! When I went for a ride the other day and my husband rode around 90km/h, I was a bit scared.
By the way, I learned a new expression from one of David's comments on the last entry. It's "he was a bit rusty". I knew the word "rusty", but I didn't know that it could be used for humans as well. We have the same expression in Japanese, too. It's interesting!
Ling - Thanks for your comment! I had a nice time with my family. By the way, you said, "I hope all the mothers in the world (include me)..." Does it mean you have children? I hope you had a lovely Mother's Day, too!!
Anne - You are a happy mum, too!! Your sons don't live with you now, but they didn't forget about Mother's Day. You have very nice sons! I hope my children will call or visit me once in a while after they leave this house.
Sam - Thanks for your comment. I know exactly what you mean. When I posted my first comment, I was very, very, very nervous!
Appoh - Thanks! I hope we'll have a chance to meet again soon. I'm going to bring my camera, so if I take some pictures at the event, I'll send them to you or send them to David so that he can put them on the blog;-)
Green & Carrie - Glad to hear you had a great day yesterday:) We have good children, so we are all lucky!
Sorry, but I haven't check the articles yet. I'll try to read them later.(I hope they are not too long or difficult...)
See you soon,
Tomo
PS David, I didn't know that Mother's Day in the UK is in March. You call her on both? You are a good son!
PPS Anne, your younger sons knows what makes you happy - flowers;-)

Hi Tomo,
Those "rocket" mufflers on Tonari san's bike cost more than 400,000 yen! They are really cool, though.

Hi David,
Thanks for the pictures,Tonari san looks really cool on his racing bike (though I can't see his face)!
About George Rekers' story,I will leave it as a homework and write the comment later.
Hi Tomo,
Yes, I am a mum too^_^
Hi Sam,
That's true. In a boxing match, there must be a person(sometimes both) gets bloody and cannot stand on his feet, but he still has to fight until he's totally down,I can't stand watching that.Don't you think it's cruel?
Hi everyone,
There are only four days before the seminar,I'm looking forward to seeing you all.
Good night.

Hi David,
I'm glad to hear you had a nice time at Suzuka. I can't see Tonarisan's face, but I'm sure he is a good-looking man!(笑)
I haven't checked the articles yet. I'm going to try to read them, but as Tomo said, if they are too long or difficult, I might give up to read them^^;
Hi everyone,
Did you have a nice weekend? As you know, we had Mother's Day. I and my sister gave a bouquet to my mother. She said to us "Thanks! But…, can I have a request? Next year, I want a lot of orchids!" We have to remember it until next Mother's Day!
By the way, I went to Nagoya on business last month, and I had a spare time, so I went to "熱田神宮". On the car on the way home, I got a call from my teacher. She said "I'm going to have a concert at the end of this year. Can you join me?" Of course, I said yes. I'm sure I got a divine grace at "熱田神宮"!
Good night☆

Hi David and everyone,
It was another busy day today. I got home before 11 o'clock tonight and it was too late to have dinner, so I had a small cap cake and a cup of coffee instead. I know it is not good for my health if I keep this thing. I don't like this, I want to eat a meal proper time!!
Sorry, I do not have time to read the articles tonight. I will read it later this week.
Good night and sweet dreams,

Hi Carrie,
You seem to have had a great time watching the match. Was it the seat called "tamari-seki" ?
Hi Ling,
Yes, I think it is cruel, and therefore it is interesting in terms of sport. I think that it is the fact that there are a lot of cruel sports that people find entertaining.

Hi David and everyone,
David, thanks for sharing the photos. Tonari san looks cool as Amica said. 270km/h!? Its speed is almost the same as the speed of "bullet train(Shinkansen). That makes me feel scary!
As for the topic, actually I watched the interview on TV program "Anderson Cooper 360" yesterday morning. In the program, a male escort talked about a two-week trip to Europe with George Rekers. I don't know the detailed background and story about him, but I guess he has been telling a lie to everybody and even to himself.
I'll read other articles and write something about this topic later.
Hi Carrie,
I'll check"Alpha Dog of the Week" later. Thanks for the information.
Hi Tomo,
Yes, I think I am^^)
Hi Amica,
You visited Atsuta Shrine at the good timing.
Hi amo,
You got home around 11o'clock last night? ! I really hope such a tough situation doesn't last long.
Have a great day,

Hi David and everyone,
They cost more than 400,000 yen?? You are kidding! Now I'm wondering how much his race bike cost in all. Maybe I'd better not ask about it..(笑)
As for the topic, I read some articles today. It is the news that George Rekers, who is an anti-gay activist, went on a trip with a gay boy and said that he hired the boy to carry his luggage, isn't it?
It's a very strange story. All I can say is that George Rekers lost people's trust and it's really difficult for him to get it back.
Hi Carrie,
I'm not sure when and where our next event will be held, but I hope we can hold it sometime in the near future.
Hi Ling,
That's good to know. We've got something in common now:)
Hi Amica,
Congratulations! That must be 御利益 ;-)
Hi amo,
I hope you can have proper dinner tonight!
See you soon,

Hi everyone, how's your day?I hope you all had a nice day, unlike the weather.
For the topic David left to us, I read some news related to George Rekers today, those articles were difficult for me ,I just tried to grasped some main points of the story:
Rekers is an officer of the conservative National Association for Research & Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH) and a retired professor of behavior science, recently he had a scandal that he went a 10-day jaunt to England and Europe with a 20-year-old gay boy called Roman.Rekers says he learned of Roman's travel services through acquaintances and required him as an assistant to lift his luggage in his travels. But Roman says Rekers hired him throgh Rentboy.com, a gay-sex website, he offered nude ``sexual'' massages to Rekers during their trip.
If Rekers is just an ordinary person, this wouldn't be a big issue, but when he is in a position of influence in people's lives and is a hypocrite about it, that rises to a different level. That's why he became the limelight now.
From those news,it's hard to judge who is telling the truth and who is lying.I just hope he hasn't been trapped by some people with some purposes.
Hi amo,
You work too hard, have a nice dinner tonight.
Hi Sam,
That's okay, enjoy the cruel sports, basically men and women are different, that's why they are always attracted by the opposite gender.
Hi Tomo,
As a mum,I think I should learn a lot from you.
By for now, good night and good dreams!

Hi Carrie,
That's great. Your story makes me want to go to kokugikan to watch the match. I never have watched it except on TV, but I would really like to someday.
Hi Ling,
Actually, I was interested in your comment "(I think..) Most women don't like boxing." and Maki's "(I don't like..) Because I'm a woman." I'm not sure that's quite true. So I just wanted to know why you thought so. (Is that a correct sentence?)
Anyway, thanks, Ling. I am just happy to have talked to you about it.

Hi Nao,
Long time no see!
Yes,we met him.
And I have to tell you another news.
I met ジャニーさん on Apr 27th.
この日の18時の回の滝沢歌舞伎を見たのですが、同じ回に光ちゃんがMAと来ていたそうです。しかも、同じフロアーに。
私たちは、タッキーの舞台に集中しすぎてしまって、全く気付かず・・・That's too bad!
気付いていたら、きっとタッキーの舞台よりも、光ちゃんたちの方ばかり見ていたことと思います。

I'm sorry I thought you were a boy, maybe your name sounds like boy, so I'd never doubted of that from the beginning, how foolish I am!!!You can give me a knock if we meet in person someday.

Hi Ling,
To tell you the truth, I'm a man, a middle-aged man.
You can ask Tomo or Maki about me in the seminar if you are interested in me.

Anyway, I would faint if I saw a boxer bleeding a lot in the match.
Hope you have a good time this weekend.

Hi David and everyone,
>Sam, I also thought you were a 'man'! I don't know why, but we don't meet in person and just talk on the web,so these things could happen...
As for boxing, as I mentioned, I don't know much about it , but I know a lot of women are interested in 'ボクササイズ'instead.
As for this week's topic, whether what Professor George Rekers said is true or not, it is obvious that he lost his credibility or his career as a Christian right leader.
What made me think while I was reading the articles is not what happened to him but the fact that there are a lot of organizations related sexual orientation. Of course in the US a lot of people believe in Christianity and I know there are tons of ideas and opinions related to homosexuality and heterosexuality ,but the name "National Association for Research & Therapy or Homosexuality(NARTH) is new to me.
In his inaugural address, President Obama referred to a gay right and it was really a new and epoch-making remark, wasn't it?
In the Bush administration, his policy was very conservative and prof Rekers must have been involved deeply in decision making.
According to the Wiki, NARTH is a organization offering conversion therapy intended to change homosexuals into heterosexuals.
Actually, Prof Rekers has resigned this organization.
Carrie, I watched the video you mentioned, and it was a bit difficult to catch the meaning for me ,too! I guess this is not news but a part of comedy program or something.
Have a good day, everyone,
Anne

Ling, Anne, I'm a boy. I'm a middle-aged "boy". I was just interested in your thought, Ling.
Hi everyone,
Boy, it was cold. It was very cold last night. The temperature swings wildly from hot to cold these days. I don't have a clue what is going on with the climate.
After yesterday's work, I said to one of my boss, "Isn't it cold? Is it just me who feel cold?" and he said, "Yes, it is very cold. You are normal and you are not sick."
It seems like it is going to be cold tonight.
Take care,

Thank you for your words. My job keeps me busy and I feel like it last long. I hope that I will get out of this situation soon.
As for this week topic, I just read one of the articles that David mentioned, but I am not sure that I understand the things correctly. If Rekers was telling the truth, I cannot understand his behavior. I do not think anyone believe that he hired someone from a gay escort site for just carrying his luggage.....
I’ve got to get back to work.
Have a nice day!!

Hi David and everyone,
Nao, don't worry. We won't forget you:)
I thought Sam was a man. He wrote "(I don't like..) Because I'm a woman", but he just quoted Maki's comment.
Sam, generally speaking, I also think what Ling said is right. At least it's not wrong even though there are some women who like watching fighting sports like boxing, wrestling, or "K1"(I know there are also some women like doing these sports too.), but I don't have any friends who like boxing, either. My husband sometimes watches boxing matches on TV. He likes watching soccer and baseball games, and F1 races as well. He's a typical boy, isn't he?;-)
Have a nice day, everyone!

Hi team,
I almost forgot to leave a comment regarding this week's topic.
I had never heard of George Rekers in the US.
Is he a Baptist and a gay? I have to admit I can't catch the point even after I read some articles online.
Does this have something to do with Vatican scandal ?
Anyway, the mid-term election is approaching here.
A lot of uncommon things would happen or unveil, I guess.
I'm flying to Los Angels tomorrow.
Bye for now.

Hello David and everyone,
I read through some articles about George Rekers. I just wondered why he became an anti-gay activist while he was gay.

I look forward to reading reports about the seminar!

Hi Anne,

Hi Carrie,
I read your comments again, you were talking about a sumo tournament, not boxing, I’m sorry!

Hi David,
I'm happy to hear you enjoyed racing at Suzuka.
I watched "Alpha Dog of the Week" by George Rekers. Without English subtitles, it was difficult for me to understand.
I know now you are busy making a new book, but when will you have the third seminer?
And where? Do you have an idea about it?
Hi Tomo,
You are so lucky mother. I was also given flowers by my elder son's couple and a watch by my little son. But poor me, I cooked supper by myself.
Hi Sam,
You enjoyed watching boxing. I hate to say I don't like it. Nor I don't like sumo. But I had a chance to watch a live sumo tournament in Osaka in March. It was a good seat in front of 土俵、so I could enjoy the match so much. If I had a chance to watch a live boxing match, I could enjoy it or got faint from it.
Hi amo,
I love the emerald green sea and tropical flowers in Okinawa. Enjoy your stay!
