Making Books
Hi team,
Sorry I didn't do a new entry on Monday, but I have been really busy with the new book. I have also completely lost track of what day it is. For some reason, I am actually "ahead" by one day. On Monday, I kept thinking it was Tuesday, and on Tuesday I kept thinking it was Wednesday.
Anyway, today I thought I would explain what I have been up to these last couple of weeks. Before I became a publisher, I really did not know very much about the publishing process and the different jobs that it involves, so I guess that most of you don't know about it either.
The first stage in the process of producing a book may happen in one of two ways. In a small company like mine, I start by having the idea, and then I write the book. In big companies like ALC, however, the original idea often comes from an editor. She (most of ALC's editors are women) decides what kind of book she wants to produce, and then she finds someone to write it. When she has a sample, she has to pitch the idea to her bosses. If they like it, then the editor tells the writer to go ahead.
Most writers write their books in Word or a similar word-processing program. When we write, we don't worry too much about how things look on the page because we know that it will all change later. In other words, we just focus on the content.
During the writing process, the editor has two jobs: one is to advise on content, and the other is to make what is called a "style sheet" for the book. This is a list of rules that the book will follow. For example, the editor has to decide whether the book will use 一つ or 1つ, and then make sure that rule is followed all the way through. Actually, we had a problem last year with the kanji for "susumeru." Both my Japanese editors said that it was correct, but Tomo said that the one we were using was wrong. It turned out that Tomo was right!
In English, the style sheet can get really complicated because English has lots of rules about spelling and punctuation. For me, this used to be one of the most difficult aspects of editing because people in Japan use American spellings and pronunciation, and of course I learnt the British style. (Actually, that is one example: I have to write "learned" in my books, not "learnt.")
For most writing that is based on American rules, editors and writers follow the advice of a book called "The Chicago Manual of Style." As you can imagine, it is a very big book! In Britain, the best-known book is "Butcher's Copy-Editing." (Whether "best-known" should be hyphenated or not is one example of the kinds of problems that editors and writers have.) As with punctuation, the biggest problem is that American and British styles often have different rules. Another problem is spelling. If you follow American rules, then you use "color," and if you follow British rules, then it will be "colour," but what happens if you quote a British writer in an American text? Should you change the spelling to match the rest of the document, or should you leave it as it was originally written?
When the text is ready, the next person to join in the production process is the designer. Editors generally have their own favourite designers for different kinds of books, so they usually work with the same people again and again. The designer's job is to create a page layout that is attractive, and one that presents the material so that it is as easy as possible to read and navigate. The designer also has to design the cover for the book, of course. Designers normally use Adobe's programs - Illustrator and Indesign. This is very expensive professional software. I think the package costs about 300,000 yen.
When the design for each page type has been decided, someone has to actually take all the text from Word and place it into the new design. This is normally done with Adobe's "Indesign" program. This job is called DTP, or "Desk Top Publshing." In English, it is also known as "type-setting." In Japan, the person who does this is called the "operator."
DTP is really expensive. Sometimes it is done by the designer, but often it is done by someone else. Anyway, it normally costs a few thousand yen per page. As the typesetter works through the book, he or she will have to deal with many problems where the text does not fit the design. For example, one paragraph may be a bit too long, so one line jumps onto the next page. In this case, the typesetter contacts the editor, and then she (and maybe also the writer) have to decide what to do about it. It's a long job!
Actually, typesetting is what I have been doing these past two weeks. It takes me much longer than it would take a professional because I am still just a beginner with the software. However, I'm learning a huge amount every day (every hour, actually!) and this morning, I finished the whole book. I used to be really scared of Indesign because it is so complicated, but now that I am beginning to learn how it works, I'm finding it much easier to solve problems. My original plan was that I would just take the English text I had written and paste it into the Indesign file of the Japanese book, but that didn't work at all because of the different ways in which Japanese and English typesetting is done, so I ended up having to redo the whole thing. As usual, I completely underestimated how much work this would be, so I have been back in crazy-work mode for the last two weeks. As I said the other day, though, I'm actually really enjoying myself :-)
The way I look at it, there are three advantages to doing the typesetting myself instead of asking someone else to do it. The first is that I can save a lot of money. The second is that I do it much more carefully than a professional would because it is MY book, and I care about things that most people would not even worry about and readers will never even notice. The third is that because I am also the writer, I can make my own decisions about how to edit the text to make it look good. For example, if an example sentence is too long, and just one word jumps onto the next line, I can edit it myself to make it fit. This is a very efficient way of doing the job.
So, that is what I have been up to. Now that the typesetting is done, the next job is, of course, proof-reading. I have four professional native-speaking editors checking this manuscript, but I would still like to have some Japanese people checking it as well. Native speakers often miss English mistakes because our brain corrects the text as we read it. For example, if the word "a" is missing before a noun, many native speakers will not notice it because their brain will add the word as they read. That is why non-native speakers are often much better at checking for mistakes. Anyway, if you have time to help, please email me at info
Hope you are all enjoying the holidays.
Bye for now.

Hi David,
I know what you mean, and making a book takes a lot of time.
I am going to step out for a while, so I will write another comment tonight.
Hi Anne,
How is the weather in Nara? Hope you are having a wonderful time there.

Hi Carrie,
Can you tell us a bit more about your balloon ride? How long did it last? How much did it cost? How did you book it?
My father and my middle brother went in a hot air balloon in Kenya. They said it was amazing, so I'd like to try it someday.

Hi David,
The balloon ride was only for several minutes. They held the riding event around Arshiyama in Kyoto only on May 3rd and 4th. I was lucky to ride, because it was before 9 a.m. They say, after 10:30, the wind became stronger. The balloon was for just the sightseeing and playing. Two thick ropes were bound with two cars, so that the ballon wouldn't fly far away. So unfortunately, I went up only 25 meters high. But the driver of the ballon said ' he experienced 6000km high and the tempreture was -38 c degrees. The balloon owner lives in Niigata, and wherever the event is held, he rushes to the destination.
Sorry, that ride is different what you think.
Several years ago, at the same place, I rode on a heliclpter. That was more fantastic and scared, because differnt from airplane, around the fuselage is see-through. I could see the whole scenery of Arshiyama and Kyoto city.
By the way, which do you think of reading for my grandchild in American English or British English?

Hi David,
Thank you for sharing how to make books. It was new to me. It sounds very good you can take three advantages through publishing your own books. It will surely take lesser time to publish the next book.

Hi David,
Glad that you've done the typesetting.
I know that there are a lot of processes to produce a book, as you explained before, but I didn't know about the detailes, and they are very interesting. Thanks for sharing it!
As tsuneko said, it's really good that you have advantages to doing the typesetting yourself, though it must be tough.
Bye for now,

Hi Carrie,
I honestly don't think it makes any difference which books you choose. (Unless your granddaughter is planning to become editor when she grows up!)
- David
- 2010年5月 5日 22:05
Hi David,
I thought the designer just design the cover and draw some illustrations for the book. A few thousand yen PER PAGE?? DTP is really expensive! If a book has 300 pages, it costs 600,000 - 900,000 yen, right? That's a big money! I guess it costs a lot of money because the job is very difficult and takes much time, but you can take care of it all by yourself. That's amazing. If you learn more about the software, you could be a professional designer!
Hi Maki,
Thanks for your message! I hope you have recharged your batteries;-)
Hi Appoh,
Ha ha, your comment made me laugh again. I hope you had a nice and cool evening;-p
Hi Sam,
Did you have a good time with your friends?
Hi Carrie,
You are welcome:) And glad to hear you had a great time with your husband. By the way, as for books you are going to read for your granddaughter, how about choosing one that is easier for you to read? Children like to listen to stories, you know. I used to read stories for my children, too.(Mostly in Japanese, though) If I read stories with lots of expression and used different voices, they were excited and happy.
Hi everyone,
The 5 straight holiday is over now. Time flies when you are having fun, doesn't it?
Hope you are all having a nice evening.
See you soon,

Hi David,
Thank you for the detailed process of how to publish a book,it's a totally unknown area to me,I probably will never have an opportunity to be involved in it,but it's good to know something about it. I can imagine, what a big and complicated job you are doing these days. If I were you, I would be much annoyed at having to change all spells to American way.
Hi Carrie,
Riding on a hot-balloon sounds exciting,I'd like to try it if I'm lucky to have the chance.
Hi Sam,
I hope you had a good time with your friend.
Hi Tomo,
I'm happy(meanwhile a little jealous) to hear that your plan has eventually come true--riding on a bike with your husband in the beautiful nature, just like a scene in a film......
Hi everyone,
Tomorrow everything will be back to normal, have a good night!

Hi David and everyone,
The holiday is getting over... I am so sad and I do not like to get back to work.
Anyway, I enjoyed the holidays. Finally, I put away my winter clothes and took out my spring and summer clothes. I went for shopping, and went to have a massage for eyes. Also I went to the movies, of course, I studied English a bit.
Hi Carrie,
I have never ridden on a hot balloon or helicopter. It sounds nice, if I have a chance I will try to ride on. By the way, one of my sisters lives in the U.S. and her husband has got a licence to fly a Cessna. According to my sister, he enjoys flying a Cessna once in a while. Also she enjoys riding on it with her children. I am looking forward to riding on it when I visit them next time. It must be exciting, so I can’t wait!!
About the books, I do not know which is better but how about reading “Nursery Rhymes (Mother Goose).” They are rhythmic, so I think it is fun to hear for children.
Hi Tomo,
We were lucky that we had nice weather during the holidays, weren’t we? Glad to hear that you went for a ride with your husband and had a nice day.
Good night and sleep tight,
amo

Hi Tomo, Ling, and everyone,
How was your holiday?
Yesterday, I had lunch with my friends and enjoyed talking. Then, we went to Karaoke, but we had to wait for our turn for thirty minutes, so one of my friends played Pachinko during the time. he spent a thousand yen, and was able to get nothing. We enjoyed Karaoke very much. I was surprised to notice that there were many foriegn songs in the list, because it was the first time I've gone to Karaoke for ages, and I never knew that there were so many songs like that. I really enjoyed myself. I was so excited that I slightly have had a headache since then.

Hi David and Tomo,
Thank you for you advices for reading books for my glandchild. I'll try to read as much as I can, these days she likes listening to my reading books. As far as she enjoys, any book is OK, right?
Hi everyone,
The Golden week was over, and the ordinary life has come back. As Anne does, I have to water the garden and vegetables everyday, because of this heat.
David,
I forgot to say to you, the balloon ride cost only 800 yen whereas the helicopter ride 4000 yen several years ago.

Hi everyone,
Any of you who already got back to work, you might be feeling tough today but the weekend is coming soon.:-) Take it easy.
Carrie, you must have lots of nice picture books for your granddaughter, however, can I share my favourites too? Besides “Mother Goose” recommended by amo, how about Eric Carl’s? Do you have any of him? He’s made lots of beautiful good books for kids: “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?”, “From Head to Toe”, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”, “Pancakes, Pancakes!”, “The Mixed-Up chameleon”, “Draw Me a Star”, “Today Is Monday”, “The Secret Birthday Message”, and many other works. I like his books very much. Also, children get into sort of thrilling books, don’t they? “Bears in the Night” and “The Berenstain Bears and the Spooky Old Tree” by Stan and Jan Berenstain are recommended too. At the moment, I'm into "Bears in the Night" most of all. You will learn prepositions naturally in a story. Some books are available with CDs as well. If you are interested in the above, please have a look at this site: type “mpi-j.co.jp/store/list.php?start=0” after “http://www.” (← I’ll follow Anne’s idea of how to indicate addresses, because I learned comments with real addresses will be rejected.)
amo, did you put away your winter clothes and take out your spring and summer clothes? That’s neat. It’s high time I did too, but I haven’t yet. It was so hot like summer two days ago that I bought summer clothes, I was not going to do at all though. By the way, did you go to have a massage for eyes? How was that? When you have time, please share that.
Sam, were you too excited? Making a big voice in Karaoke is really fun, isn’t it? Hope you have no more headache.:)

Hi David,
Glad to hear that you have done typesetting. I know how tough to publish one book because you have told us before, but I didn't know the detailed process of publishing the book and it was completely new to me. Thank you for sharing the unfamiliar world with us. Whenever we hear the story concerning your new book, you are tackling something new! So,what's next?
Hi tsuneko,
You watch 'American Idol' every week?
I'm afraid it was a bit difficult to cut off one sentence and catch the exact meaning.
As for your question, actually I think you heard two cases#comments# of "I can hear you on the radio." One is by Kara to Siobhan and as you mentioned, her comment was not favorable. The other is by Simon to Crystal. He said," That's the song or performance I can hear you on the radio." He also said,"It is very interesting to hear you say in your film about just being true to yourself because this is why you are working..." His comment was obviously favorable and I guess "can hear on the radio" means that contestants did very well.
By the way, in the program,Simon sometimes says,"I'm (really) impressed with..,"right? Which contestant do you like? Crystal"MamaSoc" BowerSox is my favorite.
Hi Carrie,
You seem to have had a great time and I'm happy for you! As you said, if it didn't rain, you need to water the plants....
By the way, picture books for your grandchild, books amo and tusneko recommended sound interesting. I'm not sure what kinds of books are good for 17 months baby, but even in Japanese ones, I guess children(babies) around this months like picture books that pictures are clear, simple and vivid, and the sounds of words are physical and funny, right?
If you are interested in picture books ,just visit the Amazon and type' 洋書' and ' Babies picture books' in the blank, you will find a lot of books that are good for them.
Hi amo,
Did you recharge your batteries during Golden Week? I hope so. By the way, your brother-in-law flies the Cessna? That sounds cool!
Last February, when I went to Alaska, I had a chance to fly a light aircraft and that was sooo thrilling!
tsuneko,amo and everyone,
I went to Nara yesterday. As you know,it was very hot and I walked, walked and walked!
This year various events are going to held in Nara to celebrate the 1300th anniversary of Nara-Heijo Capital. I visited Heijo Palace Site yesterday.
Speak to you soon,

I feel like today is Monday…
It took a long time to finish reading this entry. I don’t mean it was too difficult to read, but not easy to imagine how the publishing process goes. I thought all writers wrote anything they wanted and published. “In big companies, the original idea often comes from an editor.” I didn’t know that. Editors must keep thinking of new ideas for new books. That would be a difficult job to do, but I think they have a lot of joy to create a new book after such a long process.
One more thing that interested me was this sentence; “there are three advantages to doing the typesetting myself…”in the second last paragraph. If I were in this case, I would carelessly put “to do” instead of using gerund. I have learned one thing this time again, but I don’t think I will say it correctly! (It’s pretty high level and confusing for me)
Hello Tsuneko,
In the last entry, thank you very mush for your comment to invite the seminar. Unfortunately, I will be working on that day. If I have a chance, maybe next time. I was really happy to see your comment.
See you,

Hi all,
How was your day? I hope you are not suffering from post-holiday blues. As Tsuneko said, the weekend is coming soon, just one more day to go!
Hi Ling,
"Like a scene in a film"?? You have a nice imagination!(笑) Well, reality is usually not as nice as movies, but I had a great time, and it was also nice to forget about my job as a mother once in a while;-)
Hi amo,
Yes, we were very lucky with the weather during the holidays. I hope we have nice weather on the 15th as well. By the way, I didn't know you could get an eye massage at a shop. I'd love to try it!
Hi Sam,
It sounds like you had a lot of(too much? 笑) fun with your friend. I hope you are feeling better today. Take care!

Amo,
What's the eye-massage like?I haven't heard it before,tell us something about it.
Sam,
It seems you had a great time yesterday, what kind of songs did you sing yesterday, what's your 18 ban?You must be too excited,I hope you get rid of the headache soon.
Taco,
When I read this sentence"there are three advantages to doing the typesetting myself...",I felt "違和感",but soon I told myself,it must be a high level English,so I didn't think it too much...

I just went for a ride on my scooter to measure my jogging course. I guessed that it is about 8km, and it turned out to be 7.7, so I wasn't far off.
I had a terrible shock this afternoon. I have put on a lot of weight recently, and I started my new diet last week because I weighed myself and found that I am heavier than I have ever been before by about 2 kilos. Today, I tried to put on my motocross pants, and I couldn't fasten them! I'm going to have to start running every day again.
Actually, I think I'll go now.

Sorry, but your story made me smile, and that blowed away my post-holiday blues!;-)
Anyway, since you started working very hard for the new book, you had to spend a lot of time sitting in a chair. Right? (何のフォローにもなってないか。。。^^;)
It's time to go to bed. Sleep well, everyone!
Talk to you later.

Hi David
Thank you for introducing a story about publishing. It is very interesting.
When I was a student, I published some magazines in university. The way of publishing that I know is similar to the one you introduced. But a large scale publishing has many processes that I don't know. It seems so hard!
By the way, in this morning, I also cannot fasten a top button of my shirt! I think I have to start diet, too...
Hi Tomo
Thank you for your comment in previous entry. I stayed in my mother's family home. I spent a time with だらだら. It was nonproductive but valuable for me. I'm glad to hear that you spent a great time with your husband :-)
Hi Carrie
I recommend a picture book that is titled "Where the wild things are." The creatures in the book are little bit scary, but as you see it, they become look more lovely. And the last of story is heartwarming. If you have a time, please try it.

Hi tsuneko, Tomo and Ling,
You guys are interested in a massage for eyes? I use a PC at work, so I am facing the display all the time, and that gives me a bit of an eye strain. That’s the reason I go to get a massage once in a while. It starts from feet, leg, hand, arm, shoulder and then eyes, to tell the truth, I do not know what exactly she is doing with my eyes because I always fall asleep when I get a massage. After that I feel refreshed and my eyes are clear. Also my eyes get bigger than usual.
Hi David,
You must be kidding!! You have put a lot of weight? I thought you lost a lot of weight because you seemed to go for a jog constantly. Anyway, good luck ;-)
take care,

Hi everyone,
I'd like to talk about a colleague of mine. When he went back home during this holiday, he ate fresh fish. He says, "I ate horse mackerel, and it was very good. The other day, I ate flounder, and it was very good." He said that he had eaten fresh flounder before, but it was the first time he had thought flounder was delicious. He doesn't know if it is a taste change. I asked him, "Did you have grilled meat dishes?" And he said, "I did. it was very good. But I don't know why flounder was delicious."
Anyway, I thought it was good for him. Finally, he said, "Well, what I can say for sure is I am quite well these days!" This guy is kind of a funny man.

Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Undeniably believe that that you said. Your favorite reason seemed to be on the net the easiest thing to take into accout of. I say to you, I certainly get annoyed even as folks think about issues that they just don't know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the highest and also defined out the whole thing with no need side effect , folks could take a signal. Will likely be again to get more. Thanks!

Hi David,
You must have been exhausted after the hard work.
I didn't know how to publish one book in detail before reading your blog.
Hi everyone,
I have a granddaughter who is 17months old, and her mother expect me to tell her or read her books in English. Which books are better written in American English or Blitish English?
Hi Tomo,
You must have enjoyed riding a bike with your husband and spent time among green fresh trees and leaves. I also not by bike, but by car, went to a botanical garden and enjoyed walking among various kinds of flowers and trees with my husband.
We took lunch among fresh leaves, which made us comfortable. And thank you again, telling me how to enter the blog. (without writing URL)
Hi Maki,
I hope you also enjoyed the Goldedn week, too.
