Going to Hokkaido (Feedback)

Hi team,

I had a very nice day today riding my motorcycle around Lake Toya. This was the first time my Suzuki had seen Hokkaido roads, so she was very excited. Unfortunately, when I got back to my van, I realized as I was wiping the insects off the front that oil was leaking from the front suspension. This sometimes happens if you leave bikes standing for a long time. Anyway, I called the shop I used to go to when I lived in Sapporo, and the guy said he will fix it for me next week. I wasn't planning on riding it this weekend anyway, so it doesn't really matter.

Tomorrow, I am driving up to Wassamu (north of Asahikawa) to watch a motocross race. It's the all-Japan event, so there will be some top-level professional riders there. I'm also looking forward to seeing all the guys I used to ride with when I lived up here. I haven't seen some of them for 8 or 9 years!

Anyway, here is some feedback on your comments this week.

If I want to say "おいしくない", can I say "It is not good"?
(Yes. Or "it's not very nice.")

Hope the weather in Hokkaido will be back to normal.
(I hope so too! It's not as hot as Aichi, obviously, but it is still really humid by Hokkaido standards.)

That’s a pity that England lost to Germany.
(It's a pity that...) IT/THAT

As I mentioned, I am going to Okinawa next month, which is at the hottest time of the year.
(Very nice sentence.)

You seem to have a great time; driving,beautiful scenery.
(You seem to be having...)

I sold tons of soft cream in the summer!
("Tons of" is a good expression to learn if you don't know it.)

I know the phrase “give the boot,” can I use this in the same way? For example,

I'm still awake watching the game between Netherland and Brazil with the family.

As for "moved", you adivised it was too strong for that situation. If I may, I think how strong you feel depends on each person, so I guess the reason might be diffrerent from the strength. I checked "move" into a dictionary. It says: [with object] arouse a strong feeling, especially of sorrow or sympathy, in (someone). The feeling I got was neither sorrow nor sympathy. Is that one of reasons the usage of mine was odd?

It must be so soothing to see beautiful　scenery, get fresh air.

I'm thinking about our travel destination for this summer.
By reading your travel journal (blogs), 北海道 might be nice but we can't afford it.
Going to 北海道 all of us, my family, together is too expensive.
Anyway I'm thinking about somewhere which is surrounded with nature.
Escaping the hustle and bustle of the city and being in a beautiful surroundings relief our daily stress, we need this once in a while.

Thanks for the feedback! It sounds like you had a good time in Toya. I'm happy about that, as Toya is one of my favourite places and also my hometown, as tsuneko mentioned.:-) Riding bikes on the narrow and widing road around the lake seems to be fun for riders! Just 'riding' your motorcycle is correct.

Also, 'the waterfall you mentioned is correct. You do not need the past perfect because the meaning is clear.

I was happy to see my sentences in the feedback. Thank you very much. In your comment, one sentence you wrote attracts me; “this time was the first time my Suzuki had seen Hokkaido roads, so she was very excited.” I found your motorcycle was a lady: Ms Suzuki! Or do westerners use pronoun “she” when they talk about vehicles like ship? It is sometimes interesting for me that you treat your bike as a human. I always treat my cat like a baby, but he may think I am a big CAT servant!

I received Common English Errors and I have been reading little by little since yesterday. I will learn a lot from the book in many ways.

I searched the pictures of "インクラの滝". They are very beautiful. I haven't seen any big waterfall, so I eager to see it.

Do you have a nice weekend? It is raining hard in Kyoto.
World Cup becomes more and more exciting. I never thought of Brazil's defeat. Another last night game, Uruguay v Ghana was also dramatic one. Ghana got PK at in the end of second half of extra time. But Gyan missed it. Then game went into penalty shoot-outs and Ghana lost by 4-2.
Both sides never stopped fighting to win the game. It was awesome. I'm sorry about all African teams left the competition.

I feel the same.
For me English grammar is quite confusing.
For example, although I studied about "Article, a,an,the" so many times, I can't master it.
When I speak to someone in English, If I worry too much about mistakes and hesitate to talk, the flow of conversation would stop, so I try to just go on.
On the other hand, when I write something in English, I can double check my writing.
Even though, there are always so many mistakes in my writing.
I just have to learn those mistakes one by one from David's feedback and some other resources.

Hi team,
It was raining again today, and my friend said that all the interesting races are tomorrow, so I didn't go to Wassamu. Instead, I spent the day driving around Kamifurano and Biei. After that, I drove up to Tokachi Dake onsen, went for a walk up the mountain, and then went to the onsen. I'm going to sleep in the car park up here tonight. Believe it or not, there is still some snow on the ground up here! I'm going to get up early and drive to Wassamu in the morning.

Taco, thanks for your message:) I had to help my niece with her study for her English test, and there were “jugyo sankan”s and three meetings on Thursday and Friday at my children's elementary school, so I was a bit busy. My oldest son is having his English test on Monday and Tuesday, so I helped him with his study today. He is in high school now, and their English classes are getting difficult. They have to learn lots and lots of new words and expressions, and I also learned some new ones from the textbook.
By the way, I think David often treats things around him as a pretty(?) lady. Did you know that he named his カーナビ "Ai chan"? 笑

David, my son learned the present perfect form when he was in junior high school, and now he has learned the present perfect progressive form. He asked me the difference between them the other day, and I explained it using your red book. I know he needs to meet a lot more example sentences, but I think he got something. Thank you!

As I said, their English classes are getting difficult more and more. Today, I had to make some example sentences using the forms "will be done", "be being done" and explain about "will", "would", "can", "may", "might", "should", "ought to", "have to", "must" and "had better". It was difficult for me too! By the way, do you use "ought to"? I remember learning it when I was in high school, but I've never used it. Anyway, I need to study English more before I teach my son.

Glad to find your feedback in your latest entry. Thank you very much. I am also happy that some of my sentences were nice. About usages of IT and THAT, I sometimes get confused about which should I use. I’ve just read about explanation of it in your book again. Hope that I got it this time :-)

When I watched the TV news this morning, the weathercast said that it would rain everywhere in Japan, except Okinawa. Was it raining in Hokkaido again? That’s too bad. It was not good weather here in Tokyo either. I was wondering that you went for a walk up the mountain in the rain or at that time was not raining. Anyway, hope it will be fine tomorrow so you could enjoy watching the race.

You or I will never get the kind of coverage those people have. You and I will get whatever they decide we can have. Wait 3 years to see a specialist. That means your overworked family practice dr. says you have cancer or a bad heart, you wait 3 years to see the cancer or heart doctor! Most people save the government a lot of money by dying while waiting! My son lives in North Idaho about 100 miles south of Canada. You can hardly get in to a hospital in CoeurDAlene Idaho or Spokane, WA due to the parking lot being full of Canadian vehicles. These are only the Canadians who can afford to pay cash. POOR Canadians have to sit at home waiting to die. Our government is already managing a healthcare system. VA Hospitals! Some are very good, but some are terrible! I have had 3 elderly uncles treated at the Boise Idaho VA. It is excellent for the most part. So is Albuquerque NM where another uncle and a cousin have been treated. But, when my uncle lived in southern NM, I took him to the El Paso VA and it was a filthy dump! He was on the same 20 medications for 20 years and felt lousy the entire time there. When he had to move in with his daughter north of Albuquerque, they were quick to take him off all 20 and replace them with 3. He felt 20 years younger! VA care is hit-or-miss, depending on where you happen to be. Is that what we want here? There are good and bad hospitals in my area. I have the choice to not go to the bad ones NOW! Will I under the government plan? I doubt it. We now have the choice of suing a bad doctor or hospital for malpractice or carelessness. Will we under the government plan? We will have no choice and we will have to just take our chances. Frankly, the chances do not sound promising under the government plan. A word to the wise- if you ever sue a doctor or a hospital, no other doctor will accept you as a patient. We were warned about that after our local hospital and (one nurse and one doctor) almost killed my husband twice in two days. We did not sue because he has a terminal illness and HAS to have doctors! Medical care is far from perfect here now. PLEASE DO NOT LET THE GOVERNMENT MAKE IT WORSE! Virginia, I think you need to go back to watching Soap Operas and American Idol and not bother your little head about any of this. Either that or READ THE BILL! There is a part about increasing the time between pregnancies (FORCED ABORTIONS??) and there is a part about not treating elderly and counseling them to just let nature take its course or make other end-of-life decisions. That means denying treatment, Virginia! That means either giving them enough pain meds so they die in peace or else letting them suffer as they die. EITHER WAY, THEY DIE! I am not ready to accept that.
