Coming back to Japan

Hi Team,

I went to Bath at the weekend to stay with my friend, Kevin. We were at Liverpool University together. Bath is a beautiful city, and it was great to see Kevin again. We went out to a bar on Saturday night, and on the way home, we saw a very drunk man staggering all over the road. As we came up behind him, he collapsed on the floor. We ended up having to call "999" to get him an ambulance. I have never made a "999" call before, so that was an interesting experience. There was nothing really wrong with the man - he was just really, really drunk. Unfortunately, you see a lot of that in Britain these days. Actually, there was an article in the newspaper the other day about the strain that drunk people put on the ambulance service at weekends.

Today is one of the biggest holidays of the year in the UK - it's the August Bank Holiday. People usually think of this as the end of summer, but to be honest, I don't think summer ever really got started this year! There is a show (a bit like a festival in Japan) in our neighbouring village today, so I'm going up to have a look at what is going on. I'm hoping I will bump into some more old friends.

Actually, I went out with an old school friend on Friday night. We just went to his local pub for dinner, and then we had a game of darts. When we get together, we usually play pool, and he always beats me. This time, he challenged me to a game of darts in the pub. He thought he was going to win that as well, but he didn't realize that I have a dart board in my house and play all the time! I won our match, but then we went back to his house for a game of pool, and he beat me 4-1, so he was quite happy in the end.

By the way, I had a very embarrassing incident the other night. I went to visit a girl I went to school with called Emma. She lives in a really beautiful house with her husband, Paul. She has a fourteen-year-old son and an eight-year-old son. We were all sitting in her living room, and I was telling them about how beautiful Japan is. In particular, I was telling them about Youtei zan in Hokkaido. The older son was sitting on the sofa with a computer on his knee, so I told him to search for pictures of the mountain. His younger brother was sitting next to him, looking at the screen. I told him how to spell "Youtei zan," and he wrote it as one word with no spaces.

If you want to know what happened, go to google.co.uk, click on "images," and then search for "Youteizan." (Warning: do not do this when children are around!) Luckily, Emma and Paul thought it was very funny, and I think the boys enjoyed it too.

Anyway, tomorrow is my last day in the UK. I'm flying to Singapore on Wednesday, and then back to Japan on Thursday. I hope it has cooled down a bit by the time I get back!

Are you coming back to Japan? I am afraid but, according to the weathercast, it is going to be another hot weather this week :-(
By the way, it seems that you had a lot of fun this weekend. “Youteizan” story made me laugh (sorry)
Speaking of an ambulance, for myself, I have taken by an ambulance to a hospital twice (of course I was not drunk!!) but I have never call myself.
When I went to the UK, I wanted to visit Bath, but I had no time to go there. What a shame! I really would like to visit there sometime soon.

But how could it happen?? Was it the name of the...? Anyway, I hope the boys enjoyed some pictures of "Youtei (space!) zan" as well. lol

My middle son and my daughter have already finished their homework, but my oldest son still seems to be working on it. He says the deadline is the first class of each subject, but he had a test today, so I think it's too late. The teachers will know who did the homework properly and who didn't...

It sounds like you've been having a good time with your family and friends. That's really nice! I'm happy to hear that you intorduced how beautiful Youtei zan(with space, of course;-) is. At first I serched for "Youteizan without clicking on "images", so I didn't know what happened. Now I understand! 笑
By the way, how was the show? Was it fun?

As for the summer time, about 5 years ago, it was tried in Hokkaido and it wasn't for whole summer, but for about a month. Companies, associations and local authrities; the number was about 400, joined the pilot program. However, they learned setting the summer time had both advantages and disadvantages, and probably the biggest problem was that it would take a huge amount of money. After that, they haven't tried it again.
For me? It would be nice to set the summer time, though I'm not a early bird.

You seem to have been having great time with your old friends and I'm happy for you.
"Youtei zan" story made me laugh and I hope boys enjoyed seeing the 'real' Youtei zan as well.
By the way, are you flying back to Japan on Thursday? Sorry to say, you need to be patient with hot and humid weather for a while. According to the weather cast, it is supposed to continue this hot weather for more few weeks.

I enjoyed reading your new entry.
I finally understand what had happened when the boys googled youteizan. Ha ha ha
(I'm not techno savvy so I had struggled to see the nasty(sexy) youteizan images)

You had a wonderful time with your old friends.
I think your whole holidays in UK is a lovely and relaxing time.

So it was tried but it wasn't continued.
Summer time might not be successfully in Japan if we have it.

Thank God School Started again!
So I'm not the only one who feel relieved and kind of happy about childeren's going back to school.
In my area, elementary schools had started on August 26th.
Lucky us.
Although there are no 給食 at junior high and high schools so we prepare お弁当.
Now, children go back to school, things become normal and I can have relaxing me-time.
"Me-time" is gramatically wrong but I saw a native use this word.

It was so funny!Youteizan I saw looks like ladies.HAHA.
But I was very upset because I searched it in my office.

As you mentioned, there are a lot of meanings in 'strain' including 'ストレス.'

はっきり分かりませんが、ここでは「週末に酔っ払った人々が救急車を使うことによる（利用することによる/or 使いすぎるの意味も含む）過労（overwork)」と言う風にとらえました。

いかがでしょう皆さん？

By the way,I have ever seen the word"me-time" and yes,indeed you need to have"me-time" even though you love your family.

As for "the strain", there are a lot of meanings, as you both mentioned. I would take 負担 of them.
使い過ぎることによる負担（＝不要に使われて困るused in unnecessary trouble)かな～と思いました。
I'm not sure, though.;-)

I found "me-time" in Macmillan English Dictionary, and according to it, it means thata period when someone relaxes by doing something that they enjoy.
Yes, I understand what you both mean!:-)

I also love him so much that I visit to see him allways I go back to Hokkaido.

Thank you for explaining the meaning of "strain"
I first thoght is it "stain" if so 酔っぱらいが救急車で、吐いてシミをつけたのかな？と思ったけれど、Makiが言うように
負担だと、「週末にたくさんの酔っぱらいが救急車に乗るのが、救急車（救急隊）に負担になる」との意味かなぁとやっと納得しました。ありがとうございました。ひとつ勉強になりました。

This summer is really getting to me, so I’ve got no appetite and had a bad night. It seems like that I cannot concentrate on my work these days. Anyway, I took a day off today. I needed to go the banks and the post office. It was nice to have a relaxing day at weekdays. Also I am happy that tomorrow is Friday :-)
I am going to see a musical called “the Sounds of Music” performed by Gekidan Shiki on Sunday. I haven’t been to theatres for a while, so I am looking forward to it.

Hi team,

I'm at Changi Airport in Singapore. I spent the day sightseeing, and I went up to the place where I used to live to see how it has changed. Actually, it is so different now that I couldn't even find the apartment block I used to live in.

I'm leaving Singapore on a 1.00 flight, and I'll be back in Nagoya at about 7.30 tomorrow morning. I'm not looking forward to all that heat!

When I read your comment, one phrase came to my mind, it was “There’s no place like home(我が家にまさる所はない＝我が家が一番)” (This is the phrase that transports Dorothy back to Kansas in the film “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” FYI) so I would say:
No matter how much you enjoy your trip, there’s no place like home.

Yes. Yesterday's running was really terrible. However, I watched Sapporo Marathon last Sunday. It was a tough race under 32 Centigrade degrees. I was moved by the runners.

Thanks for your comments. It was very hot, and there were so many people that it felt hotter than the actual temperature, but it was a lot of fun! At the festival, there were lots of events, shows, and shops. My daughter, my son, and one of my nieces joined a game, and they had to find 4 Disney characters like Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, Alice, and Peter Pan who were strolling around in the school.(It was like a "stamp rally" game. You get a stamp card, and you collect stamps from the characters.) They found Alice first. She had blond hair and were wearing a light blue dress with a white apron, so she looked just like the one in the Disney movie. When my daughter found Alice, she called out the name "Alice!" and ran toward the character, and then she found out that it was not a girl but a boy! My daughter looked a bit surprised, but she was happy to get a stamp from the cute boy, anyway. Actually, we saw a lot boys wearing a girl's clothes(a skirt or a dress) at the festival. My son's class was doing a show called "TKB 41". As you can guess, they performed like "AKB 48" on the stage, and a half of them were boys! We passed a boy wearing a dress like a maid in the corridor, and we saw a boy wearing a pink dress with a tiara at my son's club's show as well. Before they played the song "Super Mario Brothers", some students performed a very short drama as an introduction of the song, so the boy in the pink dress was Princess Peach(one of the characters in Nintendo's "Mario" video game). I didn't see my son wearing a skirt this time, but I might be able to do it next time. lol

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod's. It works well, but isn't as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that's not an issue, but if you're planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod's larger screen and better browser may be important.

Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Im based in London have worked as a secretary for more than 10 years and have an HND in Business Studies but am tired of admin work and office politics and would like to do something more creative- change careers.. . If you're still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you'll know which is right for you.
