Matilda and Ollie

Hi team,

We had quite a lot of comments on the last entry, so I thought it was time to do another entry. (Anne, sorry to hear about your dictionary! I hope it gets better soon.)

My brother Peter went to the Isle of Man to visit a friend this weekend, so his wife Di brought their children Matilda and Ollie to my parents' house on Sunday. Here are some pictures:

Matilda is going to be four in September, and Ollie has just turned one. He can walk and run, but he can't really say very much yet. Matilda is really talkative, and she's lots of fun. Mind you, I was exhausted after playing with them for a couple of hours. How people deal with children 24 hours a day is completely beyond me!

I'm still at my parents' house in North Wales, but I'm going to drive up to the Lake District tomorrow, and then I'm going up to Scotland after that. I have to come back to Wales by Saturday because we are having a family barbeque, and then after that, I will be heading down to London. I'll write comments as often as I can.

By the way, the temperature here is still only around 20 degrees, so I'm in no rush to come back to Japan! Hope you are not suffering too much in the heat.

this introduction is quite intriguing.
I also checked Scotland site and think it's a lovely
city with a good old atmosphere.
The pictures of some places are like some scenes from English movies.

Because of lovely places and comfortable temparature, no wonder you are in no rush to come back to Japan.

You will be staying U.K. for a while, have a lovely holiday.
Your family must be very happy to meet you again.

The other day, NHK BS hi vision broadcast "Miss Potter". As you know, it is a biopic of children's author and illustrator Beatrix Potter, and combines stories from her own life with animated sequences featuring characters from her stories, such as "Peter Rabbit". It was so fantastic and picturesque to see the scenery of the Lake District.
I wish I were there.

But lucky for you it will be able to be fixed.
Is it you who introduced the book "美しいままで”　by　ネーダーコールソン靖子？　It is about euthanasia.
I am reading it now, considering my mother ,　husband　and my living wills. These days my mother got weaker and weaker, especially her back and feet. So whenever she goes to clinics, someone (my sister or me have to take care of her). My husband and I have already written our living will by hand, and my mother also hopes in case she becomes coma, to choose death with dignity. But she hasn't written her living will by hand yet. It's difficult to urge her to write it as soon as possible. All we can do is just to keen an eye on her.

It's still hot in Osaka,so I wish I went to Wales.
I can't go to Wales,but I went to Kyoto to escape.Do you know Amanohashidate?
I went to Kunda near Amanohashidate.There is the beautiful sea in Kunda,and it is cooler than Osaka.Yay!
I enjoyed swimming and windsurfing.I have never done windsurfing,so it was so hard.
Windsurfing only gave me muscle ache and bruise..
I slept without air-conditioner.It was so nice!
BTW,thank you for sharing your picuture.Matilda is so cute!Her smile made me happy.
I remember Ollie!He has just turned one?One year have passed since I saw his picture.

Thanks for sharing the lovely pictures. The one on the blog is really nice! Matilda looks a lot like her mother. I like the one Matilda is sitting on your laps and the one Oliver is holding your(?) hand as well. Your smile is very nice and Oliver's tiny little hand is so cute! It seems like Matilda likes Kitty chan.(She is wearing a T-shirt with a kitty chan and coloring kitty chans.) I can't believe that she will be 4 and Oliver can walk and run!

Thank you for encouraging me to post and not worrying about my English.
Tomo, I read an article of EJ 2010 January.
Actually I had known about David's blog there.
And it said that you have been reading and commenting from the beggining of this blog.
Your English at that time was junior high school level? I can't believe it!
So I believe if I keep on studying on this bolg , my English might progress a lot.
Recently I catch up with the older bolgs starting from the beggining.
And I was surprised that how David's writing Japanese is so perfect.
Explaining something in Japanese as other people understand is difficult even Japanese native.

By the way, I am happy that you are interested in the movie “Extraordinary Measures.” I bet you’ll like it ;-) Speaking of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, I haven’t watched “500 Days of Summer” yet, but “A River Runs Through It.” Have you watched it? You can see “Young Joseph” in it. Also, I just watched “Angels in the Outfield” tonight by chance. When I got home from work, my sister was watching it on cable TV so I had missed first part of it. My friend's father was the best surfer of all.He is about 70 years old!He was great.
I also love to sit near the sea.I really relaxed on the beach in the evening.

Thanks for reading the article. I've liked English since I was in junior high school, but my English was very poor when I joined the blog. It was really difficult for me to read and write English even a few sentences. If David had started the blog in English, I wouldn't have joined it, so I was lucky to find the blog 4 years ago. You can both study and practice on this blog, so I'm sure you'll improve your English if you keep doing them. Also, we have a nice teacher(David) and lovely teammates who can help one another. I hope they motivate you to keep going:)

I've hard of "pop-up card", so the expression "pop-up" is easy to understand, but "lift the flap" was new to me.

Hi everyone,

The thermometer in my house shows 30 Centigrade degrees.
It’s really hot.

By the way, as I mentioned, I’m reading the book ALICE’S Adventures in Wonderland.
Its vocabulary is not so difficult. However, I found a looong difficult sentence.

The sentence is as follows:
Never imagine yourself not to be otherwise than what it might appear to others that what you were or might have been was not otherwise than what you had been would have appeared to them to be otherwise.

The book has notes following the story. However, even after I read the notes, I cannot understand the sentence. If you don’t mind, please help me.

I may ask a question, David.
Do you British people understand the meaning of the sentence easily, especially children?
Though I suppose you might say yes, I’m afraid I can’t understand it.

I haven't read that part yet, but it's the line the Duchess said to Alice in the chapter 9, right? It's too difficult for me to understand, so I Googled the line and found this translation.

“Never imagine yourself not to be otherwise than what it might appear to others that what you were or might have been was not otherwise than what you had been would have appeared to them to be otherwise.”

「あなたがそうであったか　またはそうでありえたものは　あなたが以前にそうであったところのものが　人びとに別のものに見えたであろうところのもの以外のものではないことが　他の人に見えるかもしれないもの以外のものではないと自分のことを想像してはならないのよ。」

I hope that helps, but I can't understand it well even in Japanese! I didn't think the book was that difficult because I know the story, but it is! I'm trying not to use a dictionary, so I skip parts I don't understand and try to use my imagination. As you know, the characters often speak nonsense, so I'm also trying not to think too much. lol

I got interested in English when I was in junior high school.
I'm self-described English Otaku.
I don't have an opportunity to use English at my daily life, neither go abroad because of children.
So this blog is a very good source of studying English.
Checking this blog is one of my favorite thing, kind of a treat!

I recently joined this blog.
I understand you like reading.
I like reading a lot too both Japanese and English books.
When I choose English books, I often choose from the point that the theme is familiar to me to be able to imagine the storyline.
For Example, I 've read some English books about Japan.
For example, "Memoir of Geisya"
There is a movie of the story as "Sayuri"
If there is a movie, it easier to watch it first and then read the original book.
I've also read "IT series" by Dave Pelzer, the story is about child abuse so I can guess the story.
At first I was so into the books because the child abuse the author was going through is so cruel, couldn't believe but it's also a very touching , loving story.
Reading is a good way of learning vocaburaries and useful expressions.

I have to go now because my sons rush me to finish.
They use PC for games through morning to night so there are very few time of my turn.

The book’s note for this part is as follows:
「汝がありしもの、またはありしやもしれざりしものは、他人には、汝のありたるものが、彼らにはさにあらずと見えしものにほかならずと見えしやもしれざるものに他ならず、と汝自身において考えることなかれ」

What I can say at least, after reading two translations, is whether those translators really understood or not, because both translations looks difficult for me to understand.
I’d like to ask them, ‘Cloud you really understand this sentence?’ (lol)

Besides, a certain thing for us is, at least, the author Lewis Carroll did understand this very difficult sentence. Before this part, he wrote, ‘Be what you would seem to be’---or, if you’d like it put more simply---.
It means the he put the difficult sentence after ‘---or, if you’d like it put more simply---’ intentionally.

Anyway, I feel as if I were solving a puzzle while I’m struggling to this part. (lol)

I’m kind of on vacation right now. But it was unplanned, so I’m basically just lazing around. There is a movie theater in a shopping mall that’s only a two-minute walk from my place. I don’t go there often, but yesterday I took advantage of the location and went to a late show. It started around 9:30 and ended at 12:00, but it was no problem because it was only a few-minute trip to and from the theater. The movie was “Inception.” I thought it was brilliantly done. Very entertaining. I really enjoyed it.

Hi everyone,

Some of you are having Obon holiday? For me, I worked whole week, poor me!! One good thing was a commuter train was not so crowded this week. I’ve got a bad headache since yesterday, so I wanted to go home early today. Besides I didn’t think that it was going to be busy today. Apparently, I was wrong. So many customers came to the office, and they kept me busy :-( Even so, I was able to leave my office around 7 o’clock, so not that bad.

Anyway, hope you guys have had a nice week than I have!!

Our family usually go and eat somewhere after priest prayed at my altar. So as I wrote you before, we had reserved Kibune 床. But thank to the typhoon, the road from 貴船口 to　貴船 collapsed. So I had to cancel the seats we had reserved. Then I came up with the idea going to しょうざん　near 金閣寺. They also have the same service of 渓涼床. Lucky for my family, we could reserve the last seats. Compared with 貴船、しょうざん　isn't so cool, but among many trees and a river, it was not bad. We could enjoy the atmosphere and good meal. That was a break. To 16th, I am going to be busy. Take care, and enjoy your holidays. (Sorry for someone who has to work.)
