Scotland Trip
Hi team,
Sorry about the late entry. I tried to upload the photos last night, but the internet connection at my parents' house is really slow, and at night when lots of other people are using it as well, it gets so slow that it almost stops altogether.
Anyway, here is one picture I took on the Peninsula of Kintyre. If you click on this one, you can see some of the others from my trip. (I couldn't upload very many because the Internet connection was so slow.)
On Tuesday, I drove up to the Lake District and stayed at a Bed and Breakfast near Windermere. I love the Lake District, but it is not a good idea to visit in August because the small towns and villages get really crowded with tourists and their cars.
On Tuesday night, I went for a walk along the shore of Windermere. I walked for about an hour, and I came to a sign that said "Ferry Landing 2.5." I thought, "Two and a half kilometres? Okay, that will be a nice walk." When I eventually got to the ferry, though, it felt as if I had walked a lot further. On the way back, I looked at the sign again, and I realized that it said "2.5 m," which means two and a half miles! A mile is a lot longer than a kilometer, so 2.5 miles is about 4 kilometres. That day, I ended up walking about 15km! I guess I have been in Japan too long. (When I buy things in Britain, I have to convert the price to yen in my mind to judge whether it is expensive or not!)
On Wednesday, I drove up to a place called Drymen near Loch Lomond in Scotland, and I stayed at a B & B there on Wednesday night. On Thursday, I drove up to Loch Ness (I didn't see the monster), and then I went through the Glencoe Valley to the Isle of Skye. That was a really beautiful route. I took some photos, but it looks very different when you see it for real.
I drove to the village of Portree in Skye, and then I drove around the north part of the island to a really small village called Uig. The B & B I stayed at there was run by an English man and his American wife. Coincidentally, they met and married when they were working in Japan. Both of them could speak Japanese, and they had lots of Japanese art and ornaments in their house.
Friday was my big driving day. In the morning, I drove around the south of Skye, and then back through Glencoe and down to Fort William. From Fort William, I drove down the coast to Oban, and then down the Argyll coastline to the Kintyre Peninsula. Everyone of my age or older in Britain knows about this part of Scotland because of Paul McCartney's song "The Mull of Kintyre." (The Mull is the southern part of the peninsula.) The weather was (unusually for Scotland!) fantastic, and the sun was shining as I drove down the west coast and then back up the east coast.
From Kintyre to North Wales is about a 7-hour drive, because you have to go all the way back up to Glasgow before coming down the motorways through England, so I didn't get home until about 3.30 a.m.
I have been to Scotland before, but I've never been to Skye or Kintyre, and I didn't realize how incredibly beautiful these places are. If you are interested, just check Google Images for "Isle of Skye" and "Kintyre." You can also have a look at Google maps if you want to see where I went.
As you all know, I love living in Japan, but there is one thing about Britain (apart from the temperature, of course!) that makes life much more enjoyable here in the summer. In summer, the clocks are turned forward by one hour, and it doesn't go dark until about 9.30 at night. This means that even at 6 or 7, it only feels like the middle of the afternoon. It's a wonderful feeling, and the days just seem much longer. I really wish Japan would switch to summertime. In August, the sun comes up at about 4 a.m., doesn't it? If the clocks were turned forward by one hour, this would change to 5 a.m., but we would get an extra hour of light in the evenings. I've heard that this idea has been discussed in Japan, but it never seems to get adopted for some reason. Do any of you know why?
Today, I'm going to be driving down to London to stay with my old friend Liz. I'm also going to be meeting up with my university friend Nick while I'm down there. The weather is beautiful today, and the temperature is up to about 25 degrees, but the forecast for the next few days is rain :-(
I won't have access to the Internet while I'm in London, so my next comment will be on Friday or Saturday.
Bye for now.

How lovely they are!
I'd like to write more but time is running out.

Hi Nao,

Hi David,
Thank you for the beautiful pictures and fascinating story.
You are having a lot of quality time, that's great!
The pictures are breathtaking.
The reflection on the surface of the lakes is so perfect.
I think you have a talent for photography as we said before.
As you said "~it looks very different when you see it for real"
I'd like to visit there and see them with my eyes.
You read the sign as kilometers instead of miles.
It's a reverse culture shock.(この表現であってたでしょうか?
You may more accustomed to Japanese customs than British customs even in U.K.
The owner of the B&B at Uig speak Japanese.
They seem like they like Japan.
The temperature is still 25 degrees.
How nice!
For a couple of days, Japan is having a blistering hot days and the news said several people were attacked by heat stroke.
You'd better stay in Britain for a while.
About summer time in Japan,
After World War 2 Japan once had summer time by the advice from the U.S.
But the summer time didn't go well in Japan.
People are worrying about the mistake of the past.
So about less than 60% of the people agree on having summer time in here.
For me I agree on having summer time because I'm a early riser.
You gonna meet your old friends in London.
Have a relaxing time and catch up on each other's news.
Take care.
Hi everyone,
Did you have a good お盆holiday?
Did you go somewhere?
My family is going to 上高地 on thursday and friday.
For us it's a first time to visit there so we are looking forward to it.
Japan is having scorchers so take care and take a lot of water and salt.

Hi David
Thank you for sharing photos. What beautiful scenery! And children are cute! Lake District is a place I want to visit someday. Now Skye and Kintyre are added.
It made me laugh that you had misunderstood 2.5 mile for 2.5 m. 「慣れ」 sometimes make such a funny story.
I don't know why Japan doesn't use summertime.
Please enjoy meeting with your old friends!
Hi Tomo
Have you already seen "借りぐらしのアリエッティ"? Did you convince your son?(笑) If you haven't yet, please let me hear your impression about the movie when you see it :-)
Hi amo
Have you entered it? It was very very nice festival! But, when Summer Sonic ended, my fuel was empty. My main objectives were to see "The Smashing Pumpkins" and "A-ha" (I think most of you might have heard of the name of A-ha or their song "Take On Me"). Because it was last A-ha's concert in Japan, so there are too many women in their 40s. They were very powerful :-)
Hi Chiyo&Fumie
You both are going to cool place? That's nice!
Hi everyone
Did you have a good お盆? This week is my summer vacation. But I have some work that I should have finished before the vacation started. It's like a 夏休みの宿題, hahaha...phew, it reminds me bitter memories of 夏休みの宿題 :-(

Hi,there!
Talking about Arretty?
I saw the movie last last week, and went to the Museum of Contemporary art,Tokyo which Arrietty's Exhibition is held now:)
They're so nice to see!
You can feel like you're Arretty herself!!
And their drawing were great either.
But my customer said that was not enough to explain the story..

He thought it was incompleteness.
Well, how do you all think of it?
I just like the boy's face in Arretty's anyway:)
He looks like the boy from "耳をすませば".

Hi trmr,
Unfortunately, I have never been there. If I were young enough like, I would go there at least once. I have watched “Smashing Pumpkins” once many years ago. Come to think of it, I haven’t been to concerts for ages!! The last time I saw one was David Bowie, several years ago. Anyway, hope you have finished your homework already and you are having fun your summer vacation ;-)
Hi Nao,
Glad to know that you had a good time with your family during your holiday.
Hi Chiyo,
Nice to hear from you again. You are going to Hokkaido next week? Hope the weather will be nice and have fun :-)
Hi Fumie,
You must be having a nice time with your family at Kamikochi. I have been there once and it was a nice place. Enjoy yourself!!
Hi everyone,
A friend from work treated me to dinner last night. She got extra money last month so she wanted to buy me dinner. We went to an organic restaurant and food was good. Lucky me ;-)
Hi David,

Hello David and everyone.
How are you? It has been really hot recently. I’m getting used to this heat wave and also feel a bit cool when it is 32 or 33 degree!
Hello Nao and Green.
I saw the TV program that you were talking about because your comments interested me. You got me curious about how much he (Koichi) was working for the show. That was very interesting. He said, “Tomorrow never knows. I don’t want to be worried about anything that might happen in the future. Instead I just concentrate on everything happening right now.” You can believe words from someone with great effort. Is it difficult to get a ticket of the show??
Have a nice day,

Endless SHOCK、

Hi Team,
This is my last day in London. I'm staying with friends in a place called Surbiton, and I take the train into the city every day. The weather has been quite good for the last few days even though the forecast was for rain. I've been walking around the shops and the parks, and I went to see a musical called 'We will rock you' the other day. It was amazing! I'm going into town to meet some friends by the London eye in an hour, and then I'm going to Harrods and the British Museum later. I'll post some pictures when I get back to Wales at the weekend.

Hi Green,
As I said, my friend paid so I do not know whether it was expensive or not. According to her, it was not so expensive.
Hi trmr,
I am happy that you also like David Bowie :-) it was fun, I really enjoyed myself at the time. Hope you have a good time at BBQ!!
Hi David,
I wasn’t expecting your comment from London so I am happy to find your comment tonight. You must be having fun with your friends now. Have fun the last day in London. Hi David and Everyone,
I had a week off, as a summer holiday. Things has been hectic since I was back to work on Monday. Now I'm a bit relieved that weekend has come, however I'll take part in a business meeting in Yokohama on Monday and Tuesday, so I'm leaving on Sunday. Honestly say, I don't want to go this time...The weather in Hokkaido is hot enough for me.:( Anyway, I hope you all are not suffering much in the heat and neither am I.--;
Hi David,
Thanks for sharing the photos! I love all of them and I hope to visit there some time. BTW, it sounds like you are having lots of fun in London. Did you ride the London eye? It must be fun when the weather is nice.
Anyway, have a good time!

Hi Nao and amo,
We are back from Kamikochi last night.
As amo said, Kamikochi is very nice place.
The walk along the 梓川 is so relaxing.
You can decide how far you will walk depending on your physical strength and condition.
I and my eldest son decided to go on to 明神池(we had been walking for about 3 hours), but other members of my family( my hubby and two younger sons and my mom) decidede to have more shorter trip from 大正池 to 河童橋.
I'm tired but it was a good walk.
I expected to seeing some alpine flowers at 車山高原
but the season is already over and we couldn't see them 、especially
We joined the packed tour of just 10,000yen per person including bus fee.
The bus start and stop from our station.
It's not a luxury travel but they took us a lot of places, and we had a very good time.
And the temperature is cooler than Osaka.
Hi David,
You seem to having a wonderful time with your
friends.
BTW you said "I'm going into town to meet some friends by the London eye"
I dunno what's London eye and checked the dictionary and understand it's a big Ferris wheel.
The view from the top must be spectacular.
Can't wait to see your next comment.
