A Sad Day

Hi Team,

It seems strange doing this entry this after I wrote such a cheerful comment from the top of Sora Numa Dake, but I'm afraid that something terrible happened on the way down.

As I was coming down the mountain, I heard what I thought was a woman screaming, but I decided that it must be an animal because it was so loud. As I got closer, however, I realized that there was a woman kneeling on the floor trying to revive a man who had collapsed. I ran to help, and I quickly saw that the man was not breathing. The woman was his wife, and she said he had had heart trouble before. I tried mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, and we both did CPR, but we couldn't get any response out of him at all. Another woman from the same party had gone a bit further down the mountain to call for an ambulance, so we had to wait for her to come back. As you can imagine, the man's wife was in a terrible state.

I knew that we were not far from a mountain hut, and it was starting to get cold, so I tried to carry the man there. Because he was not conscious, however, it was impossible, and I only managed to move him about 100 metres. Just then, though, we heard the noise of a helicopter, so we jumped up and down and waved to attract their attention. There was nowhere for the helicopter to land, so three firemen came down on a rope to try to help the man. The wind from the helicopter's rotors was unbelievable. It was difficult to even stand up. Anyway, we carried on doing CPR, and the paramedics tried to give the man oxygen, but he was not breathing at all.

Luckily, there is a forest road that leads up to the mountain hut on Sora Numa Dake, so soon after that, a mountain rescue team arrived. Altogether, I think there were about 15 people. By this time, a young man and a young woman who were coming down the mountain behind me had also come to help, so there was a huge group of us on the mountain.

The man who had collapsed was winched up to the helicopter, and me, the man's wife, his friends, and the other young man and his friend went down the mountain in the fire brigade's jeep and Hiace. (It was almost completely dark by this point.) When we got to the bottom, we were met by police patrol cars to take us back to the Sora Numa car park on the other side of the mountain.

The wife and her friends got out of the patrol car on Ishiyama Dori and went straight to the hospital by taxi. I went to get my van, and then I followed them. When I got to the hospital, I found out that the man had passed away. I had been pretty sure he was already dead when I found him on the mountain, but it was still a big shock. It must have been terrible for his wife and family.

Anyway, that was my sad story from today. I'm sure it will be on TV and in the newspapers in Hokkaido tomorrow.

私が、現在の職場に異動になって１０年目ですが、この悪習慣は、それよりもずっとずっと前からのことのようです。
独身の頃、出産前までなどいくつかの会社で仕事をしてきました。独身の同僚にも、転職してこの職場に来た人もいます。
初めは、他の会社の仕事を知っている私たちにとっては、なんとも不思議な習慣に思えました。何度もこの状況から脱しなければと、新しい仕事を探しました。が、大学新卒の人でさえ就職出来ない時代に、こんなに年齢がいった人を雇う事業所は、そうそうありません。日々余りにも多くの仕事をこなさなければならず、とにかく目の前の仕事の締め切りに間に合わせなければならず、いつしかこの職場の環境に飲み込まれてしまっていました。残業、休日出勤も多く、当時まだ幼かった娘に、朝から夜まで一人で留守番ばかりさせていました。でも、当時はそうするしか無かったし、他に選択の余地は無かったのです。
今、ふと周りが見えてきて、自分の職場の状況を改めて客観的に見られたところなのかも知れません。
皆様の温かい励ましの言葉、感謝しております。
少しでも良い方向へ迎えるように、このブログメンバーの皆様からパワーをもらって心と体のメンテナンスをしていきたいと思います。

I read David’s feedback in the last entry and your discussions about it. Here are my thoughts about some points. 日本語で書きます。

＊ I’ll do my best.
本当に難しいことに関して「できるかどうか（どこまでできるか）分からないけど、とにかくベストを尽くします」という意味であって、日本人が「頑張る」を連発するのと同じ感覚で使ってはいけない、ということではないでしょうか。だから、Amicaが「多言語の歌詞を覚えなきゃいけないから頭がパニック！（こんな感じ、Amica？）」と言ったあとに使ったのは適切だと褒めているのでは？

＊ Started learning
わたしもDavidがどこをNiceと思ってくれたのか確信はないのですが、たぶん“learn”の意味を理解せよ、ということではないでしょうか？　“learn”は通り一遍に「習う」というだけではなく、学んで「身につける」というニュアンスがあると思います。だからわたしは、「習い始めたんだけど、全然身についてないから“learning”とは言えないかもなあ」と言ったつもりなのです。Is that what you meant, David?

Hi Lily,

Your explanation of "do my best" is exactly what I meant.

As for the other thing, I meant that it is useful to use "" in English to explain something in more detail. Quotation marks are often used for irony. For example:

"I went running in Makomanai Park yesterday. Well, maybe "running" is not the right word, because I was going so slowly!"

"I met Margaret Thatcher when I was in high school. Well, maybe "met" is not the right word, because I just said 'hello' to her as she was walking past me."

I was trying to find why the above sentence, which was mine, was not good. 'got unemplyed' では「首になった」みたいに聞こえるのでしょうか。Davidのように自ら望んで無職になったときは'became unemployed' の方が相応しいということでしょうか。In that case, probably, should I use 'quit the job', 'resigned' or 'became self employed'?

BTW,I went to the concert.
It was really nice.I'm very happy now.

He told us that he didn't sleep at all last night,so he was a little strange,but it was also great.
（「今日は寝てないからいつも言えないことも言えちゃう！イェイ！イェイ！」と言ったのが可愛すぎました♪）
He often said 'Yay!Yay!'.I felt he is so cute.
As for the stage,I enjoyed songs,dance and lights.
It was very beautiful stage!
I was happy to listen to IN&OUT and 愛の十字架.
I love them.

I was also wondering why ' get' was in correct.
と言うわけで、tsunekoが言うように、'quit the job' としたらすっきりするかもしれませんね。　become a doctor と同じように考えて、become unemployed になるのか、とも。ただし、ここでの状況は失業したわけではないので、やはり、quit the job とするのがいいように思いました。
ちなみに、get unemployed と　become unemployed googleしたら、becomeが格段に多かったです。
getは便利な言葉で、「～（の状態）になる」というときinformalな用法として使いますが、今回はだめなのかしら？と言う思いでした。

う～ん、自信はないのですが、Tsunekoの言う通り、got unemployed は「首になった・解雇された」、という響きがあるような気がします(got fired という表現もあるし)。　私もGoogleで調べてみたのですが、 got unemployed は「不況のせいで･･･」みたいな続きが書いてあったりしたので、やっぱり「失業」のニュアンスなのかな・・？　Tsunekoがあげた他の3つの表現なら、私は became self employed を選ぶかもしれませんね～、無職ではないので(笑)

I read this entry with my heart in my mouth because of the title, though I almost knew what happened in the end, but it's still a shocking incident. If I was there, I wouldn't be able to do as well as you did. I'm sure the man's wife and family appreciate your help, as members said.

Yes, I also think it's important to learn collocations. Actually, some of us have David's blue book called "Learning English Vocabulary"(David gave us copies of the book at the May seminar), and he says in the book, "If you want to be a good speaker of English, you need to know collocations for all the words you learn". I need to get more exposure to natural English, too. Let's learn together;-)

残念ながらトロッコで外周を回るということはありませんでした。。
（立ち見席だったのでスクリーンですら顔がはっきりわからない感じでした；）
ステージは前方と中心に少しだけ花道がのびていて、基本的に前方のステージに光ちゃんはいました＾＾

I see your point, and I know “attend” is a formal verb but you said “very” formal, I did not know it that formal. I was wondering, if I wanted to say “会議に出席する" I would say “attend a meeting.” Do you think this is too formal? For example,
“昨日、姉の代わりにマンションの年次総会に出席した”(I really did)
I attended an annual meeting of our condominium instead of my sister yesterday.
Should I use “went to” instead of “attended”?
Or you just meant “attend a wedding” was too formal?
Hope you understand what I mean.

Thank you for asking the question. I also want to know whether 'attend' always sounds very formal or not, because I often used it like 'attend a class'. Also, I had thought someone's wedding was one of formal ocasions.

I was back few days ago. I stayed in Okinawa only 3 days. Okinawa is lovely place! Beautiful sea and delicious foods, they are never found in Kyoto.
Unfortunately, I didn't met your parents(笑).
That was very short trip. I will surely visit there again!

meeting unless I was writing an official report.

I'm in Teshikaga at the moment. I'm heading for Kussharo, but the weather is terrible. I think I'll just look for a nice onsen and then do some work on my computer.

Hi David,

Thank you for answering my question, but it was a bit shocking to me. because I have thought that “attend a meeting” =”会議に出席する” for a long time.
If you want your co-workers to “会議に出席して欲しい” how do you ask them? Let’s say, “2時から会議をするから出席してね” if I can’t use “attend,” I have no idea :-(
Could anyone help me???

I am not feeling well this couple of days because of weather so that I can’t write any more.

About your question, I'm also wondering if you can use 'attend' when you mean to say,'会議に出席する.'

David, thanks for your advice. Native English speakers opt to use 'go to' when you mean '（結婚式に)出席する.' I got it.
It's just my understanding, but,amo, in this situation it's natural to use 'attend' when you mean to say'会議に出席する'; I don't think it's much too formal and stiff. You don't use 'go to ' in all the cases instead of 'attend.' Well...another option? Join the meeting or something? I'm not sure about it.
By the way,tsuneko, I think you would say' attend a class.'
I'll think about it again.

As for the question about "出席する", let me share my ideas with you.

If I want to say "会議に出席する(した)", I would say,

I have/had a meeting.


＞If you want your co-workers to “会議に出席して欲しい” how do you ask them?

*If I was going to be at the meeting, I would say,

Can you come to the meeting?

*If I wasn't, I would say,

Can you go to the meeting?


＞“2時から会議をするから出席してね”

We have a meeting from 2. Can you come?/ Can you show up?/ Please join us./ Make sure you'll be there.

最後のは言い方によっては上から目線のような気もするんだけど(笑)、とりあえず、今思いつくまま書いてみました。

We would just say, "Please come to the meeting." "Please attend the meeting" sounds like an order.

I climbed Raus Dake yesterday. It was a beautiful day, and the views were amazing. The wind was really strong, though. On the top, it was really difficult to stand up. On the way down I slipped and twisted my ankle. It wasn't too bad, but I then had to walk 5km back down. It got worse and worse, and I only just made it down before it got dark. When I took my boot off, the joint was swollen up to the size of a golf ball, so I'm just taking it easy today. Actually, I'm writing this from the shore of Kussharo Ko. It's a beautiful day again, and there is nobody here but me:-)

I'm sorry that you hurt your ankle, but I'm glad you are having a nice time there.(and nice weather! It's raining again where I am.) I hope your ankle gets better soon. Take care!

My middle son went on a school trip to a mountain on 28th, and he came back home yesterday.(He is in the fifth grade, so it was not 修学旅行 but 宿泊学習.) It was raining on the morning of Tuesday, so they had to climb the mountain in their raincoat with a heavy backpack. I hoped they wouldn't slip and fall on the way. They had to do the game "stamp rally" in the rain, but fortunately, the rain stopped in the afternoon, so they were able to make a big campfire in the evening. The weather was OK yesterday, and they did some outdoor activities like making curry and rice with their friends. My son was happy that his group cooked rice nicely. I'm glad he had a great time.

By the way, I bought an iPod the other day. Actually, it's not for me but our car. I have my portable MP3 player, and my son likes "Walkman"s. I was not going to get an iPod because I didn't want to learn how to use a new software, but the memory of the audio player in our car was full, and we couldn't put songs on it any more. We checked the instructions, and it says the audio player only goes(deal?) with iPods, so we decided to get one. It took me some time to figure out how to use iTunes, but it was easier than I had thought. Actually, I've become a fan of iPods! I put some CDs on our iPod, and my husband took it with him happily today. Now I'm thinking of getting one for me as well!

Thanks for bringing up the “attend” question , I never noticed that “attend” was a formal verb, actually I used it all the time, not only for meeting, but also for class, lessen, seminar,,, and any situation that I though of “出席する” or “出る”. I’ll try to use other words instead of “attend” from now, I think I’ll never have a chance to write an official report in English(＾_＾)

Hi everyone,

I got a phone call early this morning from a 86-year-old aunt. She sounded like emergency. I suggested her to call an ambulance immediately, but she was hesitating to do so. I rushed to her house. Aparently, she looked pale, so I called 119 at once. I also got on the ambulance with her. The car was so bouncing that I got seasick, yet the staff asked me so many questions about her. As soon as we got to a hospital, she got the emergency treatment and then looked better. She moved into a room on the 8th floor. Actually, her husband is staying on the 7th floor of the same ward. I took him on a wheelchair down to her room. The husband and the wife met at the place unexpected and looked at each other. They started to laugh because they noticed both of them had forgotten to put in their false teeth.

I still go for a run sometimes. If you know about following thing, please tell me. After I run certain distance and If I have some extra energy which can I burn more calories, further distance at slow pace or shorter distance but faster pace?
The day before yesterday I met my best friend and we had a lovely lunch and nice chat. I noticed she became slim and asked her the reason. She said I started running. I was kind of surprised because she wasn't an athelete type. Me neither. She started walking and running because her son isn't good at PE. Although her son gave up running, she continues running from June and she had lost 3kilograms.
It keeps my motivation up that my best friend is also running. You know, I thought running is like a language learning. There is a moment when I really feel hard and want to give up but once I get over that I feel much better. It's like learning English.
I hope sunday will be fine because it's a sport day of my children's school.

As for your question about "attend a class", I think the same as "attend a meeting" goes for it, but can I share my ideas with you?

*If I was leaning something at a school regularly, I would just say;

I went to A school yesterday.

*If I didn't go to A school regularly, or if the other person couldn't guess what I did from the name of the place, I would explain about it more;

"I took XX class at A." (For example: "I took an English class at the city hall yesterday.")

"Have a class" can be used by teachers and students as in "teach" and " take", but I think it's also okay. For example: "I had a drawing class at the public hall yesterday."

attend は日本語の「出席する」よりも、日常会話では使用頻度がかなり低いのかな～というのが、今回Davidの説明を読んで感じたことです。　なので、「出席」という言葉を違う表現(「行った･受けた」など)に置き換えるのいいのかな、と思いました。　あ、でも上に書いたことはただの私の意見なので、全部信用したらダメですよ(笑)

So you will keep running, won’t you? That’s great! I had a try last weekend, but I got exhausted only after 200 meters, and I got sore legs the next day (lol)
Which way burns more calories, long distance at a low pace or shorter distance at a fast pace?
I’m not sure, if I take a guess, maybe it’s the former- long distance at a low pace??(same as Tsuneko&Tomo)

The entire film is set during the funeral and what makes this filmdifferent from others of its genre is the comedy and the pace is prettysmooth.
