New Apps & Feedback
Hi Team,
It's 11 degrees in Sapporo at the moment - I'm in heaven! I went running in Makomanai Park again today, and I realized that the lap I've been doing is exactly 3km. (It's marked out with a start line, a finish line, and distance posts, but I didn't see them in the dark.) I haven't measured my running speed for a long time, so I timed myself today. After I got warmed up, I managed to run 3km in 14 minutes and 30 seconds, which is just under 5 minutes for one kilometre. Mind you, I don't think I would have been able to keep that speed up for another lap, so I'm still a long way from being as fit as I was a few years ago.
Today, I met up with a guy in Sapporo who is a computer programmer. I'm hoping that he is going to help me write an app for one of my books. In case you don't remember, "app" is short for "application," and it is the name for programs that can be installed on smart phones. Anyway, this chap is an expert on the Android operating system that my phone uses, and he explained a lot of things to me that I didn't understand. He also showed me an app that helps you to find new apps! I just installed a great one called "No lock." It means that when you switch the power on, the phone goes directly to the home screen with no need to unlock it. It saves me about a second every time I switch it on. It all adds up!
I also found an app that switches the phone automatically to airplane mode when there is no signal. This saves the battery, because phones use a lot of battery power searching for a signal when they cannot find one. This will be very useful when I go into rural areas that have bad reception.
Since there were so many comments on the last entry, I decided to give you some feedback. Here are my comments:
Unfotunately, I have never been there, but I always want to visit there.
(The standard way of saying this is "I have always wanted to go there.")
After you got unemployed, we are so lucky that we can see so many nice pictures taken at many places.
(Since you became unemployed, ...)
I think I don't have good strength than you, so if I climb there, I will die!
(I don't think I am as strong as you, so if I tried to climb it, I would die!) IF/WHEN
But as always, memorising the words of songs is hard! (Nice sentence.)
I like the picture you took, where David is gasping for breath on the road.
（さすがとも！ It is a very good idea to try to use new structures when you learn them. This sentence is perfect, but you don't need a comma because "where David is gasping for breath" is defining the picture.)
No wonder the seat of your bicycle is that high.
(Do you all know how to use "No wonder..."? If not, try to look out for it from now on. It's a very useful expression.)
I especially like the Shirakawago picture.
(This is a good example of how to use "especially." ESPECIALLY
I wish everything you are working on now goes well.
(I hope everything you are working on now goes well.) HOPE/WISH
I like the one where there are traditional and unique Japanese style houses and lovely flowers.
(Nice to see Anne using the new structure too! Seriously, though, this is exactly what all of you need to do: notice new structures, find out what they mean, and then try to use them.)
Come to think of it, I haven't visited there this time of year.
(This is another very useful expression. If you don't know "Come to think of it," you should be noticing it, wondering (or asking) what it means, and then trying to use it.)
I felt sleepy and I couldn’t my eyes open any more.
(This is probably just a typo, but I picked it up because some people may not know the expression "I couldn't keep my eyes open.")
I went to bed and slept like a log.
(Another expression worth learning if you don't already know it.)
I bet that it went well as usual.
(Same comment again about "I bet that....")
I started learning Spanish about a year ago. Well, “started learning” isn’t really right.
(This is nice. Can everyone understand it?)

(You can't use "seems" if you have never been to Canada. This would have to be "sounds really nice.")

You have a small concert and you are going to sing a duet with a male vocalist? How nice!
(This is difficult to explain, but a lot of you refer to other people's comments by just repeating what they said. Actually, I think I told you that was more natural than phrasing it as a question. Normally, though, we wouldn't say it like that. I would just say "Your concert sounds really nice.")
And salmon fishing? Wow, that sounds exciting!
(This is a good example of how to refer to someone else's comment naturally. I realise it is really difficult to do, though, so don't worry about it too much.)
I have to memorise words of songs which are various language, so I'm getting a little confused..... Anyway, I'll do my best.
(This is actually a correct usage of "do my best." It doesn't mean simply "I will make an effort," it means something like "It's going to be difficult, and I'm not sure if I will be able to do it or not, but I will do the best job I can.")
and then today I'm going to see an opera "La Boheme"(spelling??)
(This is a good technique to use when you are not sure about the spelling of a word. Native speakers use this a lot.)
I mean, I understand that you can use “where” instead of “in which.”so this time I just wanted to know both these sentences “Matildaがあなたの膝の上にいる写真が(一番)好き” and “この写真のどこが好きかって言うとMatildaがあなたの膝の上にいるところ” translate into “I like the one where (in which) Matilda is sitting on your lap.” Maybe, I should ask native speaker, so David, could you help me?
("The one where" and "the one in which" have the same meaning, but "the one in which" sounds more formal.)
You are going to having a concert next month? That’s great!
(This is another of those tricky sentences. It's not wrong, but it might sound more natural just to say "Good luck with your concert next month." It's really just a question of varying your sentence structures, though.)
I wish I could go and hear your songs at the concert.
(A good example of how "wish" is used.)
I was supposed to go with my sister, but she had had a stupid thing!!
("I was supposed to..., but..." is really nice. The second part should be "she did a stupid thing.")

Sorry I wasn’t following your exchanges about the question. I think the sentence “I like the one where Matilda is sitting on your lap.” only means “Matildaがあなたの膝の上にいる写真が好き.” If I wanted to say “この写真のどこが好きかって言うとMatildaがあなたの膝の上にいるところ,” I would say “What I like about this picture is that Matilda is sitting on you lap.” Am I understanding your question? What do you think?

今日も、出勤しますが、昨日までとは少し違った目線で仕事や上司を見ることが出来そうです。９月末までに、取れるはずの夏休み、（私は、まだ半日休んだだけ）使い切れそうにありませんが、あと半日だけでも近いうちに取って、少しでもリフレッシュしたいと思います。翌日、机の上が仕事の山になっているのはわかっているのですが・・・

I'm a full-time housewife,so I can't say this or that easily,but it is true that there are a lot of workers who are unable to take a paid holiday; my elder son, who works as a manager at a tennis club in Osaka, is one of those people. You often cast a spotlight on a long-term holiday such as golden week on TV or in the news in Japan,but I know a lot of people who can't take a paid time off. What's wrong with "started learning"?
I checked 英辞郎 and 辞書の例文検索 but there are several examples using started and learning.
Maybe I just misunderstand David's question.

嬉しく思うとか、驚いてる。が...のあとに続けばわかるのですが、英文はI'm still a long way from being as fit as ~となってるので、以前と同じくらいの体力とは程遠い（以前ほどの体力が全然ない）という意味になるのかなぁ～と疑問に思ってます。
質問の意味が通じたでしょうか？

David's story about Apps are a little Greek to me.
It's not that his sentences are complicated or difficult but I don't have any knowledge about those things.
But we can't avoid those useful stuff (hightech gadgets), so I should have learn about them.
So thank you David for those information about Apps.

I did this all the time.
So it's good to know that native speakers feel strange when they see those replys.
Although I might not able to get better about this point yet because I'm a slow learner.
Last evening, the sudden drop of the temperature made me feel like went running.
I went running along the river.
I haven't run for a certain distance since LONG time ago, so I thoght this would be so hard.
I decided to just run slowly but not to stop or walk on the way.
And, I did it.
Although I ran like a snail but I didn't stop or walk.
I ran from one point to another point and after a short break I ran back.
I think it's about 1.5km or hopefully 2km all together.
Part of the reason that made me feel like running is that; I saw a bunch of people, maye a running members, at the park the other day.
They look like in their thirties to sixties maybe seventies.
They wore tank tops and shorts.
My eyes were hooked on their legs and abdomens.
Their legs and abdomens are all muscular.
Can you belive that?
Some of them are in thier sixties.
I thoght if I run regularly I can have muscular body even when I get old.
If a young cute guy look at me running, I can enhance my motivation!

Greenの今いる状況、難しいですね･･･。 雇用者は労働基準を守るべきだし、今の状況が改善されるのが一番だと思いますが、自分から何か行動を起こすのはなかなか難しいですよね。 新しい仕事がすぐに見つかる時代ではないですし、守るべきものがあって、仕事を失うわけにはいかない、というのが1番先にきますよね。 でもこのままこんな状況が続いたら、身体をこわしてしまうと思うので、他のメンバーの提案にあるように、同僚の方と一緒に声をあげることができたら･･･と思います。 それもダメなら、自分の心と身体の健康を守るために、自分のための時間を出来るだけ見つけてください。 確か来月は楽しみにしているコンサートがあるんですよね？ その前に少しでもゆっくりできる日がありますように＆コンサートでは思いっきりストレス解消してきてください!! 頑張り過ぎないように頑張って下さいね＾＾

It’s nice to hear that you are in heaven now, though 11 degrees is a bit cold to me. Running 1km in 5 minutes is a good score; maybe keeping up the same speed is quite difficult. You seem to have been really fit a few years ago.
As other people said, I didn’t really understand the “app” things either. The "No lock" one sounds good, but is the one second so important to you? The app that switches the phone automatically to airplane mode, it surely will be very helpful for people like you who travel and camp a lot.

この場合は、started learning を" "で囲っておいた方がいいですよね。 抜かしてしまいました。。

Hi team,
I'm writing this on the top of Sora Numa Dake. It's a beautiful day, and I have a 360-degree view. I can see Sapporo, Chitose, Shikotsuko, Tomakomai, and Youtei zan. (Not the one I showed you on the web, unfortunately!) There's no one else up here, so I have this wonderful view all to myself!
It's about eight km back to the car park, though, so I'll have to get going soon. I'll just finish my lovely Seicomart sandwiches:-)

"大変ですが、頑張ります"と言いたい時は"I will make an effort"を使った方がいいということですよね。 では、"I'll do my best."はどんなときに使うのでしょう？

Now, I teach piano at a Music School. I have been working for this school for many years, but I decided to leave this school within this fiscal year. I learned lots of things in this school, and I appreciate that, but recently, I have not agreed to its business policy. Now, I have some students who come to my house to take piano lessons. Next year, I'm going to be completely independent of the Music School, so I'm going to increase students who come to my house. I'm not sure if my choice is right or not. I hope it goes well....

Even if there is a mountain of tasks on your desk after taking a day off, you shouldn't try to complete them fast. Keep your own pace! While doing your daily job, why not think of changing your job and plan to prepare for it little by little within office hour, particular in working overtime?
休みのあと、仕事の山ができていても、自分のペースを崩してまで張り切ってやってはだめです。会社も心の中ではGreenのように忠実に働いてくれる社員には辞められたくないはずですから、まずは自分の時間配分をしっかり決めた方がいいと思います。
それで、日々働きながら、少しずつ、転職の準備を計画されてはどうでしょう？そうですね、例えば、来年の今頃とか、半年後とか、目標を定めて。特に、残業とか休日出勤の日の半分はその計画のために何か着々とことを進めるというのはどうでしょう？！

I'm sorry to hear that your working situation isn't good.
I'm not currently working but I quit my former job for several reasons.
One of the reason is salary.
I couldn't have decent salary even though I worked so hard.
I know it's not easy to just quit the job even if you are not satisfied with it.
But putting up with unhappy time a lot make you exhausted both mentally and physically, so I hope your current job will be better or you can find a better job!

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
