Shoya Tomizawa

Hi team,

I was planning to write about some of the things I did in the UK in this entry, but something happened yesterday that makes it all seem a bit pointless.

Yesterday evening, I was watching the Moto GP bike race from Misano in Italy. There are three races in Moto GP - 125cc, Moto 2, and Moto GP. Moto 2 is a new class that started this year using 600 cc bikes. It replaced the old 250 cc class. The first race of the new class was won by a young Japanese rider called Shoya Tomizawa.

Tomizawa raced in the 250 class last year, but this was the first time he had won. Recently, he has had some crashes, but he was still doing really well, and he was a contender for the World Championship.

In yesterday's race, Tomizawa was in about 4th place with two other riders (one Italian and one 17-year-old Britain) behind him. As he came round a very high-speed corner, his rear tyre slipped, and he crashed. Unfortunately, because the two riders behind were so close, both of them ran over him. Of course, they fell off as well. Crashes are not unusual in bike racing, but it was obvious that this was much, much worse than the usual ones. To make matters worse, the marshals picked up Tomizawa, put him on a stretcher quite roughly, and then dropped him on his head! I couldn't believe it! The Italian rider walked away, but the British rider (Scott Redding) was also carried away in an ambulance.

The first reports from the medical centre were that none of the injuries were life-threatening, so everyone was relieved. However, when I checked the web page later, I was shocked to see the headline "Shoya Tomizawa passes away." Scott Redding had a big cut in his back, but otherwise he was okay. Of course, he was in shock because of what happened to Tomizawa.

Everyone knows that bike racing is dangerous, but no one has actually died in an accident since Daijiro Kato was killed at Suzuka in 2003. (Ironically, a remembrance service was held for Kato last week because he lived in Misano.) It still seems unbelievable that such a young and promising rider could lose his life in an instant like that, and it feels surreal to watch someone get killed on TV. I guess that his parents were probably watching the race on TV as well, so I cannot imagine what they are feeling today.

Anyway, as I said, I don't really want to talk about anything else at the moment, so I'll do another entry later this week.

Hi David,

I've watched the news on TV this morning and wondered if the rider was one of your bike fellows. Is the photo of Syoya taken by you at Suzuka? He smiled very nicely, and he seems to have a lot of dreams. Mee Goreng also sounds sad now.

It sure is so sad that such a young, promising rider lost his precious life.
Looking at his picture, he has an amicable smile and makes me think he is a nice young man.
I can't believe that he was handled so roughly after he crashed!
We quite understand you don't feel like puting　another entry at the moment.

You are such a generous person.

Hi David,
I saw the news on TV this morning too, “Oh no, he’s only 19” I only thought that and didn’t take it too serious at that time. When I read your entry, I knew the tragedy meant a lot to you, if I am a moto bike racer, if I was watching the racing on TV, I might feel exactly the same as you! Though as a mother, I really understand how his parents feel at the moment, no words can describe! I only wish this kind of accident will not happen again.

For parents, losing their child is the hardest and most hurtful thing that can happen to them. It's an unbearable pain. It's so sad that Shoya Tomizawa lost his life at such a young age...

It's really sad and unbearable news. This could happen to everyone, but should not happen to anybody. I'm so sorry for his family,especially for his parents. Losing their son at such a young age is a heartbreaking pain.

I also watched the news this morning and I was shocked to see the crash. It was terrible. I wondered if you had been watching the race when it had happened. It's really sad that he lost his life at such a young age and I'm so sorry for his parents.

Hi David,

When I heard about his news this morning, you popped up in my mind. Actually, I had not known much about him, so I was surprised when I read your new entry. He was so young!! Of course, everyone knows that bike racing is dangerous, but I do not think that kinds of accidents could happen a lot. As you mentioned, no one was died in an accident since 2003, right? So it was a bit of shock. I am sorry for his family.

Yes, it's finished. They had the school festival on 4th and 5th. I also thought they didn't have enough time to prepare for it, but they were working on it during their summer vacation. I had lunch with my friends today, and one said her son's school held it on the same days, and the other said they are going to have it on 18th and 19th. The weather is still like summer, but it's September, so it's time for school festivals, isn't it? I hope your daughter have a great time!

A lot of dots make the logo, and once you try to touch the logo, they flow away here and there.あれ…flow away間違ってるかな？Anyway, please have a look at Google UK, not Google Japan and USA. I couldn't it at both of them.

Hi David and everybody,

It was nice and cool today, wasn't it? Ling, I felt the autumn on the corner:-) My neighbour and her friends went up to 六甲 mountains to pray at a shrine there today. According to her, Sep. 9 was a special day for the shrine. She asked me to pass her any item of mine so that she would pray for me too. She took my bracelet with her. She and I have been spending our free time translating the Beatles's songs into Osaka dialect recently. She's originally from Osaka, so she has rich vocabularies, I can't speak it at all, though. She was doing 漫才 and learning acting when she was young. She reads out her translation after finishing each song and occasionally crys. We did it for Queen too. I had never read lyrics carefully till now. I really like to hear her Osaka Beatles. We are half joking that we should write to Ono Yoko to let her read them out at the 30th ceremony of John Lennon this December:-)

I read this article and feel sorry for Shoya Tomizawa. Bike is dangerous and I lost my friend by the bike accident during practice for an auto race.

Shaq can not guard the pick and roll. So the Heat will murder them. Peirce won be able to score on Lebron. Allen will get shut down by Wade. Garrnet is just a jump shooter so it is pretty easy to guard him. Chalmers is a good defender and can contain Rondo. Shaq is the only big on the Celtics that can somewhat score.
